Hi everyone, I have never done Build a Bear but my son will be 5 in June and I think he might enjoy it. Any guidance on how much it costs?

    • MommySpendsLess

Cost varies a LOT. The standard sized animals (that fit most of the clothes and accessories) start at $10 and go up to about $25. That’s for just the animal stuffed. After that you can add sounds ($4+ each) and scents ($3+ each). After that clothing, shoes and accessories all cost extra. And they have EVERYTHING a stuffed animal could “want” or “need” – clothing, pajamas, sunglasses, underwear, costumes, beds, cars, carriers, etc…and it’s all brightly colored and down at kid level. Name-brand or licensed stuff costs more. You can get a pretty good idea of the prices by going to their website but be warned that not every store has all the website stuff in stock.

I’ve taken my 5.5yo daughter every year for her birthday (and only her birthday) and now she has a row of special friends at the foot of her bed.

On her first birthday my mom and I took her and we helped her pick out a basic dog with a “woof” sound and a Build-a-Bear t-shirt and I think we spent about $20.

On her third birthday my husband and I took her and Hubby let her go nuts grabbing whatever she wanted. She ended up with a stuffed cat that plays a song with a shirt, a skirt and a pair of tiny Sketchers and I think the total was over $50.

On her fourth birthday I took her and her best friend (spending the day with her friend was her big present/celebration) and the total for both girls was just under $100 – however I’d bought gift cards at a discount and had coupons so my out of pocket was less.

      So a few tips:
      1. Sign up for their rewards club and mailing lists and make sure to enter your birthday – they send lots of coupons
      2. Check the gift card sites and eBay for discounted gift cards
      3. Decide how much you’re willing to spend and explain the idea of a budget to your son. Last year my daughter and I looked through the website together and I made up chart showing about 6 different combinations using some of the bears/clothes/accessories she had expressed interest in and then we talked about how if she selected a more expensive stuffed animal she couldn’t get the magic wand, etc. She still ended up making her final selections at the store but staying within budget was pretty easy and painless for both of us (and I’m hoping it was a good lesson 🙂 )

MommySpendsLess says, thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to write this. This provides me with a great idea of what to look forward to. My kids have a ton of stuffed animals that they keep on their beds (all cute ones I bought on sale or during after holiday sales). They have loved all of them and never expressed the need for any more. I thought this would be a cute experience since we’re not doing a birthday party. Thank you for the ideas on budgeting (we try to teach him all the time – important to start at a young age!). And a special thank you for the tips on the rewards club and discounted gift cards! I really appreciate it 🙂

If you have a Costco membership, they have build a bear giftcards for $80 for $100. They come in separate $50 giftcards I believe so you can use one, save one, and/or gift one. Like mentioned above, make sure to use coupons to get even more out of your purchase.

I just took my niece and nephew. My niece got a bear that was $20. It seemed like most were $20. She picked out a shirt and pair of shorts for it. Each of those were $7. They did not get sounds but that may be something that you can order online from somewhere else and have the store put in for you before they close it up. My nephew got Toothless the dragon from the movie for $25. His didn’t need any clothes. If you’re going ahead of time, look at the website for clearance clothes and maybe buy an outfit ahead of time so you’re not spending $15 on doll clothes. That’s where they get your bill to skyrocket! Shoes, sunglasses, wands, skateboards… they have it all as accessories!

Sign up for the rewards club online through the BuildABear website. They send coupons and special offers frequently. Bears can cost from 10.00 to 30.00 depending on which ones you get. And then the accessories and clothing cost extra.
