Does anyone have those newer chi flat irons? I heard the newer ones aren’t that great. Anyone know?

I had one, but I took it back. I think the quality has really gone downhill the past few years. I got a GHD instead.

I work at Ulta and do know a decent amount about these products and their quality. Chi used to be known for it’s quality and durability until recently. Within the last 5 years or so (maybe longer) the company sold and the quality has most definitely suffered. From my understanding, they were made in the US but now are made in China. Many people still purchase these after their better one goes out, not realizing it’s not the Chi they are used to. Previously you could expect Chi last 6+ years. Now you’re lucky to get 3. In my opinion, purchasing a Chi is equal to or below the Hot Tools brand. You definitely pay for the name in this situation. Hot Tools is actually a quality brand and you’d be better going with one of their products if you need one around the price listed here. Croc is OK, but I’ve noticed wiring issues. They recently repackaged and I’m noticing less problems. But my recommendation and very favorite is the Babyliss brand. The plate is titanium and cut down my time nearly in half. You can drop a Chi once and have it crack and break because it’s plastic. The Babyliss is sturdy and very durable and has adjustable heat (which is important). Babyliss is an investment ($139.95 retail) but it will last you probably 10 years! They do sometimes go on sale, or Ulta sends a 20% off PCA item or even their 20% Ulta coupon can be used on these when offered. Don’t forget to protect your hair from damage no matter what you go with! Sorry so winded, but I feel guilty whenever I see someone purchasing a Chi not realizing half the cost in the name! Sadly, teenage girls ask for it all the time and don’t realize how easy these are to break. Hope someone finds use in some of this info. God luck!

Thank you! Very helpful! I bought a new Chi this past month and it’s definitely an upgrade from what I had been using (some brand called GSI?) I won’t expect it to last as long as my last Chi did several years ago!

        Super helpful!

I had a CHI for several years and it quit working last December. I took a chance and went with Hot Tools and it’s by far the best flat iron I’ve ever used. I’ll never go back 🙂

          • Jennifer

Glad I was able to help. I love Hot Tools and use one of their blow dryers. I just have thick, long, curly hair and the Babyliss gets it done faster. If anyone goes with this, try to prevent using paypal. If dissatisfied or something goes wrong, the return in store is much easier if paying with a credit card. Ulta covers for at least 60 days (wouldn’t believe how many try to bring back year old plus flat irons) with packing slip and confirmation email. This Chi has a one year warranty. Be sure to hold onto your box AND receipts (print a copy of that confirmation email). If you must go with a Chi, the G2 is better. And there are made in USA Chi’s (not offered at Ulta) but they are more.

ALSO, my Ulta has an endcap FULL of $59.97 Chi’s. Only priced like this because they are the spring colors! This shows that $149.95 price is inflated. And the $10 Urban Decay glosses are a great deal, but I know this is just a way of getting stock out. We recently stopped carrying these in store.

Thank you for the great reviews! I have a Babyliss flat iron that’s going on 8 years and still works great! I also highly recommend it

I’ve had my chi for almost two years and have never had a problem with it. It’s the best flat iron of this price point I’ve owned! I’ve never had one last over a year prior.

This looks like a cool deal. However, I am scared of going to Ulta. When I tried to return some product that I wasn’t satisfied with (that were past 60 days and so would get store credit), two Ulta employees told me that there was no way to return anything that was past 60 days. When I read them the policy that is printed on the back of my receipt they said that corporate wouldn’t provide them with new receipt paper that had the new policy on it until they used up all their old receipt paper. I called corporate and they said that the store was wrong and that the policy remained in effect, but they couldn’t do anything about it on their end. So the store blames corporate and corporate blamed the store. Has anyone else had this happen?
