I just wanted to help any struggling moms out there who are breastfeeding gassy babies! I was so stressed out about my gassy baby who was screaming in pain all the time! I tried modifying my diet, probiotic drops, and even the windi- butt catheter (we were desperate!) nothing worked and he would cry all night and couldn’t sleep long from gas pains. I thought he was colicky, finally I read about overactive let downs and hindmilk/ formilk imbalance, and once I figured how to remedy those problems, he was so much better!!! It was like a miracle! Might not pertain to everyone but if more breastfeeding moms knew about this, I swear less babies would be misdiagnosed as colic or just plain gassy (as my dr said)
Can u explain more about this to me
Google both “overactive letdown” and “hindmilk foremilk imbalance” the first is when milk comes out so fast the baby gags, later is about how the beginning milk causes a lot of gas vs. the later milk that has more fat and helps digest lactose.
What remedies worked? My baby screams when there is a let down, burps a couple times and still crying but keeps wanting to go back to nursing while crying!
Sounds like overactive letdown- Google that, there are several things you can do to help, but mainly you will just have to wait for the baby to get bigger and be able to handle the fast milk- but seriously Google that, there are a lot of people who’ve gone through the same thing and they show you ways to slow down the milk
Hmm definitely sounds like my baby!! I kept saying “pull off if it gets too fast b/c I can’t control how fast it flows”. I tried the lean back/having baby lay so head up higher and so baby’s belly is against me for gentle pressure (hoping to relieve some gas). I never doubted I have plenty supply other than when I was discouraged at the hospital b/c they had me supplement feeding due to low blood sugar for baby! Shortly after we got home, I told my husband that I need to feed 3-4 newborns b/c my supply is so high! I guess I can try pulling my baby off when I feel let down coming before putting baby back. I only nurse on 1 side each feeding, even when my baby was nursing up to 1 hour at 1-2 weeks.
It’s hard, but you have to just let yourself get engorged and leak everywhere rather than pumping to relieve the pressure, that way your body will see there’s an oversupply and eventually start producing less milk, takes like a week or more to see results, good luck!!!! Who knew too much milk would ever be a problem.
Yeah really! I will try tweaking some things and hopefully baby won’t be so cranky soon!
Thanks, Collin. There wasn’t a confirmation. Hopefully I get it.
