Toms-of-Maine-products

Did you purchase select Tom’s of Maine All Natural Products (toothpaste, deodorant/antiperspirant, soap, sunscreen, diaper cream, body wash, shampoo, hand/body lotion, lip gloss/shimmer, lip balm, mouthwash or any other personal or oral care products) between March 25th, 2009 and September 23rd, 2015? If so, and you do not have receipts, you may qualify for up to a $28 check via the Tom’s of Maine Products Settlement ($4 per qualifying item).

To submit your claim, head here and complete the form no later than May 7th, 2016. You can also print the claim form here and mail it to Tom’s of Maine Settlement, c/o Dahl Administration, P.O. Box 3614 Minneapolis, MN 55403-0614 OR fax the form to 1-952-955-4589.

Are you wondering what this lawsuit is about? This settlement resolves a false advertisement class action lawsuit, the plaintiff claimed that the company mislabeled certain beauty and personal care products as natural when they allegedly contained chemical products. Tom’s of Maine does not admit to any wrongdoing but has agreed to this class action settlement to avoid the cost and risk of going to trial.

And, just a reminder that you have until November 20th to submit your claim for the StarKist Tuna Class Action Settlement or until January 19th to submit for the Kashi Class Action Settlement.

Has anyone heard back about the red Bull and star tuna claims?

    • Kasi

I was wondering about that too. Never have gotten my check yet.

    • Jamie

I’m kinda thinking Redbull didn’t happen because I have since seen a surge in their advertisements using the whole “redbull gives you wings” slogan again. As for the Starkist Tuna, I thought that wasn’t going to be settled until next year sometime?

      • mich

Maybe because of the lawsuit they are trying to win back people so they’re doing even more marketing.

      • P

        From the settlement website:

IMPORTANT UPDATE: The Court held a Final Approval Hearing on May 1, 2015 and approved the Settlement however two appeals were filed shortly thereafter. On September 30, 2015, the final appeal was dismissed and the Settlement became Effective. Pursuant to the terms of the Settlement, distribution of settlement benefits shall begin within 150 days after the Effective Date. Please check this website periodically for further updates.

        • Kay

          Thanks!:)

    • Kay

I don’t think the starkist one has happened yet, but also wondering about the red bull lawsuit…. Last I checked online it was settled so checks/products should’ve gone out (or so I thought?…)

    • Colleen

Class actions can take months, if not years to get through. They may take a little time from when you submitted your claim form!

  2. Nicole

Had a deodorant! I had gotten it about a year and a half ago and it’s still sitting in my closet. I hated it

    • SoxGirl1029

Me too! The lavender one left my armpits all greasy lol

    • Amy

Me too! I had a deodorant that was the unscented kind. It smelled so bad. I literally smelled worse than if I were not wearing deodorant at all.

      • cg

I agree. I was really disappointed. I thought i smelled like rust or dirty money when wearing it. Terrible smell.

  3. Jayna

I use the toddler toothpaste for my son. I have a couple boxes that qualify.

    • My ♥️s N Texas

Same here purchased the toddler tooth paste for my baby girl

    • Abby

Yes, we use this on a regular basis for our son and ourselves. This is completely irritating! Back to the drawing board in search of an actual chemical free toothpaste.

      • Jayna

        I agree Abby! So frustrating!

        • Jenna

I had the same struggles! Things claiming to be chemical free just weren’t, and trying to keep myself and my family safe was a journey. I discovered Ava Anderson Non-Toxic products and they are TRULY safe and WORK. I am in love with the whole line. If you want to order the toothpaste (or anything else) please feel free to go through me – the link is http://www.avaandersonnontoxic.com/jennarickley and enter party code 110982. (Plus, any order placed this month the company will donate food to malnourished children around the world…it’s a win win! Love this company.)

      • Pharmchick

I use it got my toddler too and it’s annoying for sure but for me it’s most important to b gluoride free since he’s still not mastered the fully spitting out part and I don’t want him consuming it. I’ll go back to the honest company after we’re done I guess.

        • Lisa

Try Jack & Jill Toothpaste. We usually buy it on amazon and our children love it!

        • k

Pharmchick… Honest Company actually just got a lawsuit also for claiming the same thing.. i think it was a 7 million dollar lawsuit i quickly remember seeing… check it out before going back…

      • sara

If you shop at whole foods try HIMALAYA brand.it’s way better than toms

      • Tracy

We just found Ava Care products and have been happy with them.

  4. jhnicole

I have purchased the toothpaste a year ago.Its still have it.The soaps i used them all.The mouthwash all Gone. Thanks Collin this is dissapointing to see so many so called natural products always have chemicals.I did the Alexia one a while ago too sigh.

  5. Joan

We’ve been buying their deodorant for years. We go through 1 deodorant per month for my husband. I’ll be happy to get this check!

  6. Vivian B.

I have been using soap, deodorant, toothpaste, mouthwash both adult and children for about 10 + years and noticed unnatural ingredients about 6 mo. ago and stopped buying there products. Sad thing is, is that I have bought a lot over the years.

    • Katie

The deoderant is the only *product* I have ever used that made me break out and feel like my pits were on fire! Even products loaded with chemicals didn’t do that :(. I use Ava Anderson now along with Shea Moisture.

      • Jayna

I just started using Ava Anderson makeup and really like it so far.

      • Chels

Omg! I tried two different deodorants from Tom’s and they are the only ones that have EVER made me break out. My armpits got raw and red and itchy. I couldn’t use deodorant for a week while they healed. I have tried a lot of deodorants and I had never experienced a reaction like that. When I gave the second one a try (it was Tom’s but still a totally different product) the moment I saw my armpit turn red on day 2 I threw it away. I’m glad I’m not the only one who had an issue with that product.

        • Leah

Really? I have about two days left of my “bad for you” deodorant and then I was planning on trying the Tom’s of Maine stick deodorant. I have it sitting and waiting in my bathroom. Now I’m scared 🙁

          • Ashley

You should totally try Crystal. It’s literally just mineral salt and water. I used to have to use deodorant twice a day. This stuff is seriously amazing. It’s scent free but you literally don’t have any odor because it works so amazingly well. You can buy it at Walmart, I’ve even seen it at Kroger. Forget the nasty chemically stuff, try crystal! Or any other brand that is just mineral salt☺️

            • Leah

I just looked at Crystal on drugstore.com and the reviews seem to be glowing, but it says that it also has aluminum in it? Do you smell for a couple weeks when transitioning from traditional deodorant?

            • Leah

I just read more reviews. I’m very intrigued by this product. What form do you buy it in? I see it comes in a stick, roll-on, spray, and stone.

            • Ashley

The crystal deodorant does still have the harmful form of aluminum in it according to the label. Obviously they don’t call it the harmful form but there are two different kinds of aluminum used in deodorant (can’t remember the exact names right now) and Tom’s of maine uses the non-toxic kind in their antiperspirant but crystal and nearly all of the big name brands use the harmful type.

          • Junip

I’ve been using it for years and never had a problem.

    • Vee

Me too. It’s sad when companies say their product is natural when it really isn’t. Back to the drawing board.

  7. Wendy

Wondering if I should throw out the non-fluoride toothpastes I have for my boys and switch to The Honest Co. Strawberry one.

    • Jayna

Have you heard of a brand called Ava? It suppose to be really good and completely natural.

    • Lisa

My kiddos use The Honest Company strawberry toothpaste and love it.

    • jenn

Both my pediatric dentist and pediatrician say to just use flouride toothpaste now, no matter the age.

      • Kelly

I agree, especially if you don’t have fluoride in your drinking water. I put the tiniest little amount on my son’s toothbrush and it’s ok if he swallows it because we don’t have fluoride in our drinking water so it’s an easy way for him to get a little fluoride in his system.

      • katiethelady (@katiethelady)

If you are concerned about toxicity, fluoride is a neurotoxin. The long term effects and bio accumulation is unknown.

  8. Rosemary

I still have many of their soaps, a few tubes of toothpaste and I’m using the toddler toothpaste for my son right now. They’ve been one of my favorite brands for personal care items. 🙁

  9. Jayna

This totally not related but if anyone has Shutterfly free shipping code I could totally put it to good use for this Christmas. My email is momof105@gmail.com

  10. Jayna

This is totally off subject but if anyone has a free shipping code for Shutterfly I could totally put it to good use this Christmas.

  11. Just Me

I got an email about a groupon class action

  12. Briana

We used their deodorant and adult and toddler toothpaste for probably about 14 months before realizing what we were trying to avoid was still in there!!

  13. Janelle

101 free shutterfly prints or a set of address labels from kelloggs:

    KE98-2BDC-3U8B-8S5779

Enjoy and please post if you use it so others aren’t spending time on it.

    • Ain

      Thank you Janelle!

  14. Cheryl

Not shocked since Toms is owned by Colgate-Palmolive.

    • Hello

      Good point.

  15. Leah

What if you do have receipts? I only use their toothpaste, so I may have some receipts kicking around.

  16. Kim

I am so disappointed in Toms of Maine. I’ve now been using Young Living deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste, lotion, household cleaners etc… Got all the chemicals out of our home. If you don’t know anyone that is in Young Living, you can get in touch with me if your interested.

  17. ohiogirl

This is disappointing to hear! It is the only toothpaste my toddler has ever used and I only used this deodorant when pregnant and nursing. Guess I need to better educate myself and move onto another brand.

  18. Kimka

So sad to hear. I’ve been using Tom’s toothpaste for the past few years thinking it was all natural.

  19. Leah

I’m confused as to why everyone is ditching this product. Tom’s denies any wrongdoing and is settling to avoid going to trial. For a small company, going to trial can destroy them. Maybe I’m just stupid about legal stuff, but does a settlement mean that they’ve actually done wrong?

    • Cheryl

Not a small company at all. Toms is owned by Colgate-Palmolive….a Fortune 500 worth a few billion dollars.

    • Suz A.

They were bought out a few years ago and switched to plastic packaging. I stopped using when that happened because they reformulated and dumped in a bunch of crap.

    • Norwood

Nope, it means the lawyers did their usual shakedown and pocketed a fat check as a percent of the proceeds. If Toyota couldn’t fight them, what chance did Tom’s have?

America could *really* use tort reform.

  20. Judy

check out the Environmental Working Group for their ratings on products – a little scary to see how bad for you some of the “natural” companies are …

  21. Natasha

I stopped using Tom’s of Maine when I discovered Colgate bought the company in 2006. So it’s no surprise to me that there is now chemicals in the iingredients.Too many companies are bought out by others it’s hard to tell if you are really getting a “natural” product anymore. In example; Kashi is actually Kelloggs now.
