Melissa & Doug

Check out what Hip2Save reader, Ashlee, scored on a highly rated Melissa & Doug doll and baby bundle set…

I wanted to get my daughter a baby doll and accessories for Christmas, so I have been shopping around for the best deal of course. I noticed Kohl’s.com is offering $10 off a $50 purchase on Melissa & Doug products. SO, I just ordered the Melissa & Doug Baby Doll on sale for $21.24 and Melissa & Doug Doll Accessories Bundle for $29.69, which brought my total to $50.93. THEN, I entered the codes PLAYTIME10, TURKEY30 and SHIPMVC, which dropped my total down to $28.65 shipped! This is an awesome deal because I got something I wanted to get for my little girl for an amazing price. 🙂

Hi Elizabeth! The link is working fine for me… maybe try in a different browser?

Bummer. Are you able to try it in a different browser? I still see the link working for me as I click through.

Of the topic. I wonder how many gifts do you purchase for your children for Christmas? Also, do your children get toys without any occasion and how often? I going to give my 18months old 6 gifts including a set of books for Christmas. She also gets a toy every 4-6 weeks. Is this too much in your opinion? Thanks for sharing:)

    • Brittany

Why does she get a toy every 4-6 weeks? Ironically, I started realizing these deal sites I follow were making my kids spoiled. I kept thinking “It only cost 5 bucks so it’s not a big deal.” But kids have no concept of that. They just know they’re getting something and if it’s frequent then getting something is no longer special to them. I quickly remedied my ways and now they get something for birthdays and Christmas and Easter. If they want something any other time then they have to earn it.

I agree with you Brittany, I’m a sucker for a good deal which causes me to over buy. I have 3 kids and they will each get 3 gifts from us. The other toy deals I scored will be put up for birthdays, Easter ect throughout the year. My kids don’t really get new toys other than holidays and birthdays. I wanted to buy so much during the good Kohl’s sale the other day but I limited myself!

Brittany, I feel you on this. When we got prego with my second I started following this site and couponing. Through those means I found we could afford more, finding toys on clearance awakened me to how cheap I could get my kids cool toys. But then suddenly birthday gifts seemed either silly or needed to be big to impress, so I took a long look at it and cut back that frivolous shopping. If I find a deal I can’t pass that I know my girls would like I buy it and put it away for Christmas or birthdays, then if I think they would still love it at that time they get it, if not it goes in my gift stash for birthday parties or cousins. I went crazy for 2 Christmases getting all the deals, buying everything! I even stayed in budget but so what, my girls were less and less impressed or excited to keep opening and half the gifts didn’t make it out of the box for the first month (and we’re eventually donated). Now I sit down and search toy departments (or take my kids to TRU and let them dream shop with me) and then make a wish list. Then I watch for deals on those items (or similar) and only purchase those deals. You may get a barbie doll at 70% off but if they want a baby doll and you find it at 40% off but your child wants it and plays with it that makes it a better deal. I even started doing that with clothes. I can buy a million clothes on clearance but save them for back to school or birthdays. I think my girls appreciate things better that way, if it doesn’t seem like all things are just a dime a dozen (literally if you know how to shop lol) Just my opinion.

    • Just Me

I am a sucker for cheap prices but am finally cutting back. My kids get random toys throughout the year for no real and I’m stopping that too. For Christmas my 6 yr old couldn’t come up with anything to make a list. She finally said I don’t know. I wrote surprise me lol. I got some stuff from the thrift store that I know she’ll like and I’m not hung up on new stuff so I’m pretty happy. My son asked for 3 things. 2 are reasonable ( music book and stand) the last is a violin.
I’m planning on giving them what they asked for and whatever I have in the gift closet they might like but I’d really like to become one of those 3 gift ppl since Jesus only got 3 gifts.

      • Just Me

Since Jesus only got 3 gifts. Actually I’d rather make memories ( vacations, museums) than buy physical objects

        • Jennine

Correct me if wrong, but from what she said it sounds like she falls into the I buy more than I need category (like lots of us) if she did cut down to three gifts she would have then saved money for short trips and museums 🙂

        • Naomi

I shop for toy deals for my nieces and nephews. My kids don’t get gifts anymore; we go on a trip and the kids don’t know until Christmas Day. They open their clue and put them together to get the answer. They love it!

    • cali

my daughter is turning 2 this month and im also guilty of buying her toys or clothes every month. its hard to pass up a good deal, so i just put them in the closet and save them for special occasions cuz i hate paying regular price.

In order to try and do what I did, you must stack promo codes you may have in your inbox and you need to have a Discover credit card. If you log into your Discover account and go to the deals, you should find a 20 off Shutterfly plus free shipping. You can get like two mugs since they’re on clearance right now, plus the 50 percent off. Try it if you have Discover.

    • Julie L

Yay Vicky! I saw someone mention that they received a Shutterfly in the mail with their bill and I was so jealous! I’ll be checking for mine online later today–thank you!!

  5. Laura

Just a heads up, my Meijer Mperks had a $10 off $50 kohls gift card too!

    • Happymama

Did the mPerks yesterday and it worked, no problem. The hard part will be not spending it on my little girl instead of my teen boy lol!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re welcome Mandy!

  8. Anna

Thank you for all response:) My daughter is 18 months old and she is our first. We give her a toy or a book on average every 4-5 weeks for a few reasons. She is our first child. We buy toys because we need to have some toys at home. Than when we will have more children they will play with the toys that are already at home . Second, Collin deals are sooooo appealing sometimes I can’t stop. I think I need therapy:). This Christmas I bought some nice gifts for my daughter but I spent only around $100. Third reason, we have a small family and my daughter usually gets present only from her nana. So there is no other people who buy gifts for her. But I completely love the idea of making memories instead of buying a bunch of toys. I will try that when she will be older. I found some responses on the topic on another websites including Collin question she asked about the same maybe a year ago. I read that some people spend $600-$1000 even on one child. The children get 20-30! presents including stocking stuffer but still this is insane. Well this is just my opinion not a judgment. If you can afford and you think this is what do you need go for it. I read also one response that someone’s children after opening a bunch of presents turned around and said ” thats all?” This is a reminder that too much it is really too much. Isn’t this what happens to adults. We don’t really care for presents the same way as we used to when we were children. Why? Because we can buy stuff for ourselves anytime. In general of course. I wonder what Collin is going to give her children this year but of course not spoiler here:)

    • Jennine

      Beautiful.

  9. Sarah Agar

Thanks Ashlee for this idea and Colin for sharing! I just got the same deal but also applied my previously earned $10 Kohl’s cash and only paid about $20 for the Melissa & Doug Doll and Bundle Accessories set together, shipped!
My two year old daughter will be happy on Christmas! 🙂

  10. mike

sick of the stores giving extra discounts to credit card holders. I use cash for everything. since i don’t get any special discounts. you don’t get my cash!

  11. Christy

I just tried to get the deal and two of the discounts are expired! Poo! Snooze you loose:(
