Amazon has the wide mouth (1 pint) jars for a few dollars more. I ordered them a few weeks ago and it looks to be at the same price ($8.47)

We had a garden last year and wasted so much produce like tomatoes. How easy is it to can stuff? Do you have to have wide mouth jars.? We have strawberries and raspberries for fruit and last years had oodles of tomatoes…. Help…thanks

    • Sarah

You can can tomatoes with regular mouth bottles. But you need a water bath canner. Your elevation determines your cook time. You can google it or contact your local extension service.

    • Kathy

If you are just getting into canning I would suggest trying Mrs. Wages mixes. I love their salsa, chili base and pizza sauce. You just add tomatoes to it. Very convenient to use!

      • Gina G.

Hi! Where do you find these mixes? Thanks!

    • A

We had a million tomatoes last year and I canned a LOT of them. Tomatoes are acidic so you don’t need a pressure canner and you don’t need a hot water canner. I use a large pot filled about 1/4. Put a dishtowel (white, as colored ones will discolor) in the bottom of the pot. This creates a barrier between the heat and jars so they don’t break. There are a ton of recipes online for canning. Make sure to follow the directions for how long to process (boil) the jars. Read up on canning procedures. It’s not as hard as a lot of people seem to think.

Also, what is a good price for jars?

    • A

Anything less than $1 per jar is what I look for. Checkout craigslist and rummage sales too for cheap jars. Just double check for cracks/chips.

    • Gina G.

Make sure to use new lids.
