PLUS, check out this question from reader Jeanette –

I have a newer HP printer and it will ONLY use the brand name ink cartridges. As you know, those are so expensive. Are there other printers that will consistently take generic ink? Or are there printers that just print cheaper with ink that costs less? My one pack of colored ink is $45! I am so thankful for all of the ways that you help us save money!

do they sell regular paper to print your coupons on? I only see photo paper that’s not the same is it? sorry for my ignorance

Photo Paper is the 4×6 sheets of paper that you print pictures on. Its much thicker and too small to print coupons on. Its definitely not the same. The paper you use to print coupons on is 8.5 x11 printer/ or multipurpose paper. Hope this helps. 🙂

I have an HP Envy 4500. Got it last January, and just used the HP brand ink cartridges in it until a CompandSave deal came up last fall. I was going through a black and color cartridge every 4-6 weeks. I’m still on the same CompandSave ink cartridges I installed in December. At first, the HP printer (it’s an all in one wireless) didn’t want to accept the off-brand cartridges, but I told it to override the issues. However, it did take some working around and yelling at the printer and computer a lot (lol) before it finally accepted them. So maybe Reader Jeanette can just keep trying, or do some googling to see if she can override the printer not wanting to accept off-brand cartridges? Otherwise, I know that Office Depot will do cartridge refills, so maybe that’s an option she can do, if the printer just won’t accept off-brands.

Also, I learned this when I was installing my printer: HP has sort of a subscription service that is based on the number of pages you print each month, and the costs are much less than just going to a store and buying the new ink cartridge. Here is the url to the HP Instant Ink FAQ page:

Hope I was able to help!

I have a Canon and it is programmed to not accept refills. However, after a little internet detective work, I was able to “scramble” the printer and now refills will print. The only drawback is that it makes the ink level sensor not work, but obviously you can tell when ink is low. I get them both filled for $16 versus $50+ retail.

You got to pay for shipping boo

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Hi Judy! Shipping is $3.99 or free on $50 orders of $50 or more. 🙂

Judy, If you just want free items, then paying shipping isn’t for you, but if you really need INEXPENSIVE guaranteed ink, $3.99 is a steal on shipping and Tomato Ink’s ink prices are the best!

Hi Jeanette, I use a Canon pixma ip2702. This is my second pixma in 6 yrs so not a bad run. Plus, I called Canon and, because it was considered an old model, they gave it to me for about $30 shipped. Both of my pixmas have always taken the off-brand ink with no problem. 🙂 HTH

I have an HP J4580 that I have used refurbished cartridges in since I’ve had it… in most cases, I have found that the ones that you get from any of the “off brand” companies, use the recycled cartridges that are sent back through the mail, etc… Sometimes it gets cranky on one of the cartridges but I call customer service and they ship me out a new one with no questions. Hope that helps! Good luck!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks for the helpful feedback Brooke!

I too have an HP printer. I use off brand ink. Try again to see if it will work with off brand.

Just a thought: I have an HP printer and have had very good luck with Tomato Ink refills. They do have a guarantee on their ink and have great customer service. I just went to Walmart and purchased ONE black refill as I couldn’t wait for ink in the mail; it was $27.00. I just ordered from Tomato Ink and using Collin’s code and paying shipping I paid $46.10 for THREE black refills and SIX color refills! That is just a crazy good deal! Anyone on the fence, don’t hesitate to use Tomato Ink. They are great and prices are the BEST plus $10.00 off with Collin’s code is awesome!
