How does this compare to other sticks ie. Cromecast, amazon firestick? Does anyone have any reviews?

i have a roku box, we like it. it has some free channels, we primarly use it for netflicks, vudu, fandango now. chromecast my parents have because they can mirror whats on there phones/tablets on their tv ( they dont have good internet so they download when there out and then are home they are able to mirror it on their tv instead of relying on their internet) so it really depends on what you want to do hope that helps

Good questio, was wondering the same thing.

I am on my second roku stick. I sent the first one back because it stopped working. The second one does not work either. I would stay away from it. For $60 you can get the roku box and 3 months of Sling service thru Sling. I think Best Buy offers a similar deal.

I also have the Chromecast and have no problems with it but in my opinion it is good to have a second device if you want to be cable free. Each device has different functions/options available.

Oh cool! Thanks for the helpful feedback!

I have the Amazon Fire stick and they stopped supporting UV digital movies so now I can only watch movies I bought directly through Amazon on demand digital (none) and Amazon prime video. I think Roku is the only stick that lets you watch Amazon prime video, Hulu, Netflix, Flixster, Vudu (which I used to redeem all my digital copies) and more. You can’t watch movies in your iTunes library through this though. Correct me if I’m wrong.

I watch Vudu and Netflix through Chromecast.

I use this for Netflix and Amazon Prime, and I love it! It enabled me to buy a secondhand large flatscreen TV at a yard sale for only $70 instead of a true smart TV and to cut cable. It works really well; I’ve never had a problem. I would highly recommend it. There are more expensive models of the Roku but as far as I know I think they just have more free channels attached to them. I guess whether you want them would depend on how much TV you watch. For me, Netflix and Amazon have plenty to offer.

    Thanks so much for feedback☺

Hi everyone! I am completely clueless when it comes to these devices 🙁 So, please forgive me if my questions seem a little on the dumb side! I just wanted to know if you can watch the local/normally free channels with this device-i.e. CBS, NBC, etc.? Our cable bill is atrocious and we don’t even have the ‘premium’ movie channels! Hence, I guess my main question is if I were to get this & cut cable, what will I be able to watch, besides movies? Thanks so much for any info! 🙂

I’m clueless too! Wish I was tech savvy 😕

Count me in to the clueless club😨.

You just need a tv antenna to get normal channels as long as you have a newer tv. If you still have a tube tv you will need a converter box and antenna.

I have roku on my tv(not this one, but the roku tv) and I love it. I subscribe to amazon prime ($99/yr) , hulu ($7.99/month), and netflicks ($9.99/month). I get all the regular shows that I watch the next day after they air on hulu. I watch all other series on netflick. The roku is merely a way to stream all these subscriptions. There are also some free subscription channels. I love having no cable bill. On average with everything that I subscribe to it equals out to like 26/month. You do have to have a good Internet connection. When you don’t have Internet you can’t stream. Also I can watch cnn on my phone and weather so that’s how I keep up with the world lol.

I believe NBC permits you to stream your local news channel for free; however, they only offer channels in popular metropolitan areas. For example, I live in ft Myers fl (south west fl area)….it only picks up Tampa, which is 2 hours away from me.

If you want a refurb, they’re only $21.99 on Groupon right now (+ shipping).

I have recommended the Roku to a lot of friends!
We decided to cut our cable last year and compared the roku, chrome, and fire. After a ton of research we decided on the Roku and we’ve been really happy with it.
It’s so easy that our 4 year old taught my very tech-unsavy parents how to use it. We have Hulu, Amazon Prime, Netflix and WiFi through XFINITY- our total monthly cost is half of what it was with cable TV (just regular cable, no premium channels).
The Roku has saved us about $50-60 a month and we have A LOT more to watch now than we did with just cable.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

That’s awesome! So cool you have been able to save so much by switching! Thanks for sharing!

Have a this exact Roku and love…had company over and they loved the ease of it as well, and purchased one themselves. Im a bit surprised with the reviewer who had several that didn’t work…lost about that. I always set mine to home, and turn off the tv because it is a simple electronic device and don’t want to burn it out either.

  13. SallyDixon

Actually not the best price, the Roku Streaming Stick is $34.99 at Best Buy right now.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Such a great find! Thanks for the heads up! Just updated! 🙂

  14. Jen

Thank you everyone for the very helpful info!! I am seriously considering it 👍😊

I am considering going cable free next year when I move. Lots of people don’t know most of the major networks – ABC, NBC, CBS, even PBS – offer their Full Episodes of current, in season shows, for free online, starting the day after the episode airs live. So today, you can watch (for free with no subscription) episodes of last night’s shows and before, on CBS.com. I watch it on my laptop, which has wifi of course. Sometimes it’s online for free for 30 or 60 days, for example. I’d like to know which service (Roku, Amazon Firestick, etc) will allow me to “mirror” what’s on my laptop and watch it up on the bigger TV screen.
