As always, there are tons of benefits to making seasoning blend recipes yourself as opposed to buying pre-packaged ones, and this ranch seasoning is no exception. For example, you know exactly what’s in it: just seven simple seasonings plus powdered buttermilk.

Tips for making this homemade ranch seasoning recipe:

  • Consider adding more (or less) of each seasoning to adapt to your tastebuds. For a dairy-free version of this ranch seasoning, ignore buttermilk powder and combine everything as normal!
  • To make this a salad dressing, combine 1 1/2 tablespoons of mix with 1/2 cup milk and 1/2 cup mayonnaise. Substitute mayo with plain Greek yogurt if desired!
  • To make a ranch dip try combining 1 1/2 tablespoons mix with 1/2 cup mayonnaise and 1/2 cup sour cream. This makes a thick tasty dip for veggies.
  • In an air-tight container, you can store this ranch seasoning for future use up to a year, depending on the age of the spices used. Make multiple batches at once for a larger amount if desired!

I honestly think this tastes even better than the ranch packets!

If it’s possible to get a “ranch-ier” taste, this is it. Be sure to let the homemade dressing hang out in the fridge for a bit first to develop even more flavor. Then, get ready for the freshest dressing of your life!

As we mentioned earlier, it’s not just salads that would pair well with this dressing. There are so many different foods to dip in ranch. 😋

Now you can use your homemade ranch seasoning in so many recipes!

I love to use ranch seasoning to flavor mashed potatoes, ranch taco soup, burgers on the grill, and roasted vegetables. The ranch BLT salad, pictured above, is also fantastic! No matter what you use it for, this homemade ranch seasoning is a game-changer that’s sure to win over the dinner table.

Let us know what you plan to cook with this seasoning so we can all gain some inspiration. 🙌

Anyone know if there is an alternative to buttermilk powder if a person is lactose intolerant? I’d love to make this but can’t have buttermilk

    • nin

powdered rice milk, but might not thicken the same degree. Could always blend in tofu when adding the wet ingredients

      • SAFF

Maybe a few chia seeds? They thicken and have no taste.

    • breanna-2

I have left it out entirely. Just add a quarter cup more Mayo, vegan side or sour cream when you make the dressing same amount of milk or milk substitute.

    • Laura

I’ve used all of the options listed below. I love the Greek yogurt one the best. I’ve also tried a recipe that used cooked and blended cauliflower to thicken it up. It adds a unique taste but it’s good if you like cauliflower! Most of the time, I just use ranch seasoning as seasoning and not as a dip so I skip the thickener altogether.

I just order this, I’ve made my own dairy free ranch dip for months now but o would low to be able to have powder on hand to use in recipes. Fingers crossed it works! I make this mix all the time. I just omit the buttermilk. I add a half cup more Mayo and milk of my choice. 😁

That’s so great! Thanks for sharing!

Instead of mayo, substitute plain yogurt or sour cream for a healthier version.

    • Gina

      Thanks sue, good suggestion

    • Sarah

I always use plain Greek yogurt! Love it! No fat and tons more protein!

    • Gerta

Plain yogurt would be healthier. Sour cream definitely would NOT!!

      • Lauren

I guess it depends how you define “healthy”. Sour cream has slightly more protein, about 6x less sodium, and 4x less fat.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Great idea- thanks!

  3. Lisalyn

I was surprised it includes dill. Does it have a distinctive dill taste?

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Ranch dressing recipes do commonly include dill as well as other herbs, so it’s not unusual. i wouldn’t say you can’t specifically taste it strongly.

      • Lisalyn

        Thanks, Lina!

    • Darla

Almost all ranch has dill – even the bottled and dry packets. If you haven’t noticed it before, you won’t in this either.

  4. Dott

Can’t wait to try this. So excited to to maybe have ranch again. I won’t buy the ranch packets anymore. So this will be great.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh I am so glad! Let us know! Thanks Dott!

  5. CSexton311

My Sam’s club stopped selling the bulk size ranch seasoning mix that I buy often so glad to stumble on this recipe. Definitely will try making it myself plus will end up being cheaper!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Yes! Let us know what you think!

  6. Lori

God bless you. I have a lot of food allergies. Ranch was the one dressing I did not react to but lately I have been having issues.I am not allergic to anything in your recipe.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh I am so glad this can be helpful for you Lori!

  7. Tammy G

When you are not using powdered buttermilk in the recipe, how much of the rest of the recipe do you use to make a batch of dressing?

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Hey there! 💞You’ll make the seasoning mix as noted above and then if making the dressing, be sure to check the tip noted to “Combine 1 1/2 tablespoons of mix with 1/2 cup milk and 1/2 cup mayonnaise. Substitute mayo with plain Greek yogurt if desired!” Hope you love it! 🥰 I can’t wait to try it myself! 😋💖

  8. Ursolina

Hi there, could dried nonfat milk be a substitute for the dried buttermilk? Maybe at squeeze of lemon juice to bring out the tartness?

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Hi! Ya I think you could definately experiment using that. Great idea and let us know!

  9. Sue

Yet another use for this recipe- Cut fresh potatoes into wedges & toss with a couple tablespoons of olive or canola oil. Toss again with dry ranch dressing powder and bake in a single layer on a cookie sheet at 400′ until potatoes are done – about 30 minutes. Those people who want to avoid the buttermilk/dairy can use just the seasonings, it will still work!

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Ooh! That does sound yummy! Thanks for the idea, Sue! I may give that a try! 😋💖🙌
