Positive Comments from Hip2Save Readers:

I researched over two dozen different sites and this one was the best. I even made an expensive script purchase, went home printed the discount coupon, took it back to Walgreens and they refunded me the difference. The script was about $145 I got back about $95. Awesome site.

Love GoodRx’s app. My husband and I have been without insurance for a few months while waiting for the insurance from his new job to kick in (they wait 90 days). One of my prescriptions alone would have been $150. It went down to about $20 with their Rx code. Couldn’t believe it. Highly, highly recommend. Also, shop around the next time you need an MRI, etc. because the hospital is generally one of the most expensive places to get one.

I highly recommend GoodRx. We are a family of 4 on one income, and my twins are too little to go to school so I stay home with them. With the rising cost of insurance, it would eat up too much of our income so I opt without. The downside is having to pay full cost for medicine. BUT with GoodRx I am able to still get my medications at a fraction of the cost. I love how it shows the local pharmacies and how much it will be. It does change from month to month and often times I combine it with those coupons where you get a gift card for a transferred prescription. Double bonus!

I just started the Advair Disques and with insurance it was going to be $270! I used GoodRx and got it free. Not sure what it will be after this month but its showing free still.

I have been using this app for a year now, it is seriously great. I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t download it and use it! Free, Super easy to use and has saved me lots on every prescription I have had filled…. 🙂

    • Melissa

So if you have the app, is that all you need or do you have to sign up for a card or something?

  2. N

This is for people w/out insurance?

    • Lori

Goodrx usually is cheaper than the discount on prescriptions my health insurance offers…mine doesnt have a drug copay. Anyone can use it.

    • Jenni

It’s for those without RX coverage

      • Katie

Or for those of us with high deductible coverage.

  3. Lisa Morris

Great information. I am going to check it out. Thank you!

  4. Ashley

I have never understood the discounted prescription cards. Does this act as a 2nd form of insurance for your prescriptions? Does the app reflect your cost after your insurance is applied?

    • Michelle

It’s generally NOT a second form of insurance; it’s an either/or option. For instance, I have a prescription that’s a $15 out of pocket copay, if I run it through my insurance. If I use Good Rx, I don’t file on insurance, but it’s only $10 out of pocket. However, you have to be careful which prescriptions you use it on. My other one has a $35 copay with insurance, but it’s $285 with Good Rx. But you can choose which prescriptions go on insurance and which don’t. I hope that helps explain it! 😊

  5. Lori

Goodrx is wonderful! I couldn’t afford my prescriptions without it. Just cant believe the prices some pharmacies charge.

  6. Melissa

Is only for people without insurance? I have insurance, but even with insurance prescriptions can be very expensive.

    • Vanessa,RN

The coupons sometimes can be used with insurance but mostly not. If u have insurance though the app/website lets you can shop around your area to see which pharmacy has the cheaper drugs and you move your prescription over to save money.

  7. riss

There was a post here about Goodrx a few months ago and lots of people, including a pharmacy tech, said you cannot use this with insurance. But the lady on this current post said she got the advair for free, but with insurance it’d be $$$$. Am I missing something, like you have option to use your insurance and pay a big co-pay, or not use your insurance and go to goodrx for much cheaper price?

    • Frecklelily

You should always have an option not to use your insurance. At the pharmacy just ask them to remove your insurance. Most people go through their insurance because things should be cheaper. It’s kind of like going in to a local store and having the choice of using your membership card.

    • Lori

Yes you can choose insurance or Goodrx discount. My pharmacy gives me whichever is cheapest.

    • Katie

Some of the programs eliminate copays. For example, my birth control used to be a $20 deductible and the savings card brought it to $0, now I would have to pay $120 out of pocket and the card brings it to $40. I have a high deductible insurance but when I used to have copays these programs still helped!

    • AFC

I am a pharmacy tech… The Lady that got the Advair for free most likely used a “coupon” card and not the “discount” card…. You can use coupon cards with your insurance. You can usually find coupon or co-pay cards on the manufacture’s website.

  8. Melissa

And how does GoodRx make their money?

    • Luna

Good Rx charges the pharmacy a fee to run the rx through their website. So it’s actually a bad deal for the pharmacy.. Unlike regular prescription insurance, Good RX pays nothing to the pharmacy, the pharmacy just agrees to charge whatever Good RX says, as well as pay their processing fee.

  9. marlena johnson goss

My family recently lost our medical coverage my husband take a prescription that cost $386.00 at Kroger used the app and it cost $25.82.This app is well worth it.

  10. jennifer

I love GoodRx too! I saved a woman in line at Sam’s $75 on her prescription by using the Good RX app. Basically, I have found some prescriptions it saves a little and some a whole lot. Definately worth having. I always save more with GoodRx than I do with my insurance discount card. We shop around to find the best prices on everything else, why not meds?

    • spi_cy13

My local Sam’s Club in Nashville does not accept GoodRx. 🙁

      • jennifer

Really? I am in Mississippi and have never been told that. I haven’t got any prescriptions in a while though so it’s possible they changed the rules since about 3 months ago.

  11. m

My husband is diabetic and I go to the actual drug website and they have savings card. They can be used with your insurance. Saved alot of money so far.

  12. Melissa

With all the Obama care regulations, there are escalating fines for people who don’t have insurance. I know there are still a lot of people without insurance who can’t afford the premiums, and if they manage to pay the premiums, they can’t afford the co-pays. The mom of twins appears to be one of them.

    • metronoma

As are we, a family of 5… it’s either feed our family or get medical insurance…

      • Sarah

For anyone looking for an excellent health care option, please check out liberty health share! I have had it for a year, it is an excellent, reasonable cost option. It is a ministry and fits the obamacare loophole so no penalty! And yes, totally legit!

  13. Lj

We are part of a healthcare cost sharing program instead of insurance. We have been members since long before obamacare and it is recognized n allowed by obamacare. Our premiums are $280 a month for a family of 6. The downside is the level we are on does not cover office visits or prescriptions. I use good rx whenever we need a prescription n its saved us a lot of money! My baby needs a prescription cream and it costs $48 without good rx. After, I pay 8.77! Love this app!

    • Anna

One of the things insurance is required to cover under the Affordable Care Act is prescriptions. Does your plan have a copay and/or deductible and thats why you’re saying its’ “not covered”? They are allowed to have copays/deductibles. Otherwise you may be subject to the fine for not having insurance.

      • Paige

We have the minimum health care plan offered thru my husbands employer, which keeps us from being fined. There is no prescription coverage. It basically just covers preventative care. No office visits or emergency. Our doctor gave us a rx discount card, and it does help. I’ll be checking into goodrx.

      • Lj

They have an option for medical office visits and prescription but we chose the level that covers er visits and hospital stays and outpatient stuff at the hospital. We have been with CHM for almost 11 years now and our accountant says its included in the healthcare cost sharing option. Also my husband is self-employed and he said this is an acceptable healthcare coverage for his business. I have personally had 2 inpatient stays n surgeries as well as 2 pregnancies n hospital deliveries. Every dime was paid by CHM. Their maternity coverage is excellent n includes prenatal care m prescriptions. It is even set up that your deductible can be covered if you receive enough discounts. Ours has been covered every time. We are very pleased with how affordable n easy it is!

    • M.

We are also part of a healthcare sharing program. We can’t afford $1,000 a month for so called affordable healthcare. So far it has worked well. When we had insurance, my husband had to pay $90 to go to the Dr. without insurance, he only had to pay $40. If we don’t have a medical need, the money is in our pocket and not the insurance company’s pocket.

  14. Carrie

Many medications prescribed for pets are actually human medications too. Earlier this year, I needed to get an injectable pain med for my dog, which she would take orally. The vet office said to get it at the pharmacy because it would be cheaper. The prices I found calling around (even at Costco) were all around $300(!). But GoodRx said Target had the same thing for about $100. I called and the tech confirmed the price and double-checked it. I have used it to save on drugs for my dogs and cats over the past few years.

  15. Anna

I’m glad this site was posted. It can be very helpful for finding the lowest cost!

I work with the elderly on insurance issues and drug costs come up a lot. Unfortunately a lot of the discount programs exclude people on Medicare (usually those 65+ but also some people on disability). I use NeedMeds (https://www.needymeds.org/) as resource that you can search by drugs OR there is a list of conditions [you cannot search by condition]. I would look using both options for Patient Assistance programs. Although many are income based some have high income limits. Some work for people without insurance and others work in conjunction with insurance and help you with your copays. Many medical facilities have Social Workers or other staff designated to help people find a way to afford their drugs and other treatments.

If you (or a loved one) are over the age of 60 you can look for free SHIP counselors [Wisconsin has a great program statewide] https://www.shiptacenter.org/ will help you find the ship counselor in your area. There may be a state pharmaceutical program for Seniors (only about 20 states have these). https://www.medicare.gov/pharmaceutical-assistance-program/state-programs.aspx

    • jamie

Thank you so much for your comment. I try to help my dad with his medications that are so expensive – he is on Medicare and like you said most of the discount programs do not apply to him. We have gone through so many different avenues and it is so stressful & time consuming. HIs medications take up most of his monthly income.

  16. Tracy

I have used a printable rx coupon to buy pet medication from the pharmacy. It reduced the cost by half.

  17. Trac Judy

My price even after discount is too high

  18. Melanie

Has anyone used this app to purchase Epipens? I currently have a high deductible and had to pay $150 the last time. I need to get 2 sets of Epipens every year for my son. I only got 1 set this past year since I couldn’t afford both. Thanks!

    • MrsFelix1004

Have you looked on EpiPens website? Sometimes they have a discount card or you can email and ask them about a discount card. I have done this before and they were really nice to me.

    • D Y

Go to epipen.com for free co pay for epipen 2 pack. My daughter has a peanut allergy and needs these. Have not paid for an epipen a for a few years now with this program. Walgreens accepted this.

      • Sal

        To DY
Can u pls share what are the steps to get epipen for free

        • riss

Check the epipen website. They usually have a free 2 pack epipen when you sign up, print it then take it to your pharmacy. The only thing is you need to have a private insurance, not government or state-funded insurance.

    • Gina

Yes epi pen Jr. Was $600+ in my area according to app!!!

We also use the above link you gave for a discount.

    • Melanie

Yeah, it does nothing for me in my area….cost around $630. I do have the epipen discount card but it only takes off $100. $150 was my cost after discount. It’s still too much money for something I have to buy every year just to throw it out. Most of the time you get a little less than a year expiration date. It’s a ripoff. Epipen is making a ton of money…they need to figure out a way to extend the expiration date or make it more affordable.

      • Hunterwoody

There is a generic epi pen. SAMs argued with me that their was not till I finally hug up. Cvs has ordered me about 6 of them.

        • AFC

There used to be a generic epipen but it’s no longer available… at least where I work… (in an independent pharmacy but used to work for a chain and it wasn’t available there either)

          • Katy

Generic epipen is available. It is not what they call “AB” related to brand name Epipen. Basically they’re not able to provide proof that it’s 100% therapeutically equivalent .however, it can be hard to test/measure since a patient would only use it for emergencies. The doctor has to write generic epinephrine pen for the pharmacy to dispense a generic. Some insurance may cover it , some might not. I got lucky because my insurance covered generic for $3, while brand would have been $50($25 if I used insurance+ drug manufacturer coupon card. I’m also a pharmacist at a retail chain

  19. I Love Shopping

Does anyone know if there is there anything like this for vision (eyeglass and contacts)? Many thanks!

  20. Melissa

Not helpful for the two prescriptions that I use…$188 and $280 : (

    • Emily

Look on the website for the drug. They often have cards you can print that take your insurance copay way, way down. My coworker did this after I told her and it saved her almost $200 on a 90 day supply. You just give the drug maker’so card from their website to the pharmacyear with you. It was so easy!

  21. Gina

I just downloaded the app bc I wanted to see what all the bzz was about.

The major downside I see is that a person may have prescriptions at many different pharmacies in order to save money (which is good), but then the pharmacist doesn’t know of other meds and can’t say if you would have any negative drug interactions. Just my two sense. I do think it’s a good app though.

  22. Sandy

I spend about $1000 each year for my kids epipens. Does anyone know if they are cheaper through goodrx?

  23. Sal

I have a question . I am an epipen user. I need to refill this yearly . It costs 100$ out of pocket . Don’t know the actual cost . When I enter epipen in the goodrx webpage it show cvs ( my pharmacy of choice) charges 645.89$ for it?? So how much is this coupon for ? How much will I pay out of pocket if I use the goodrx coupon @ cvs? Anyone please help . Ty .

    • Rose

The price shown is the amount you will pay.

  24. lvillotta1

I work in a Allergy office. For the people that need those expensive inhalers, eye drops etc go to the actual site. For instance Breo is a newer inhaler and through their program with a copy card it is free to u for a year. If you Ventolin/Proair as your rescue inhaler you can directly go to their website and get a free one every year. I do like Goodrx too. But the most amazing savings are right through the drug company. Most if not all have a patient financial assistance program that is also very helpful. The cheapest pharmacies are SAMs,Cosco and Walmart. Everyone loves Walfreens and CVS but they are the highest around. For people who do not have insurance you really need to do your research. Sports physicals can be done at quick cares that are cheap. Most quick care clinics like CVS also give vaccinations that your child might need. Do not go to an urgent care as they are expensive. If you need to go to the ER or hospital fill out the patient financial information sheet. I make around $40,000/yr and have gotten much assistance and most of my deductible paid for.

    • riss

Thanks for the tip re: Ventolin 😊. My son uses this as needed, and our co-pay is about $40. Got our free epipen yearly thru the epipen website.

    • Ruthie

Thank you! I just got a coupon for Advair from the website- pay only $10 and you can use it 12 times!

    • Ruthie

I can’t find the Ventolin coupon on the website, do you have a link? Thanks!!

  25. Sal

I actually stopped purchasing my epipen because of the high cost . I seriously need to know how to get it for free through epipen.com

    • Emily

Usually you just print the coupon from the website and take it to the pharmacy with the script from your doctor.

  26. Kris

This app has saved me quite a bit of money on my pets prescriptions too 🙂

  27. Mrs. Y

I just picked up a two pack epi pen for free at Walgreens. We have a v high OOP expenses until family deductible is met on our insurance so I signed up for the epi pen free double pen EpiPen Savings Card. I printed out the savings card information, handed it in at Walgreens, and had to wait a little bit (15 mins) to get it filled for free., as it is takes a little more time to process with the saving plan. I was given my saving information back, and told it is reusable up to 3 times in one year! You can renew the savings plan each year if available. This plan saved me $$$s in OOP expenses.

Sometimes drug companies have assistance programs for piple with medical insurance who are struggling to pay for much needed expensive medications. You just need to ask.

  28. Rose

I aslo Have used it and it does lower the cost. Obe thing though doesnt work at Walmart Pharmacy they stop letting you use it. But Walgreens still lets you use it.

  29. kerryiu

It’s heartbreaking hearing all these stories about the high cost of prescription medication. As a Native American, not once in my entire life (currently 28 years old) have I ever paid for a prescription. Through the IHS (Indian Health System), I get all my medication for free because of treaties between the US government and tribes. I’m currently getting Humira shots (for arthritis) every 2 weeks and I just searched on how much it would cost if I didn’t get them through IHS and my oh my :0 I do hope everyone is able to afford the best quality and lowest cost of their medication.

    • Jenni

Sadly, the rest of us are paying for the subsidies you and your tribes receive. Nothing from the government is free. Thru no fault of ours, my husband and kids were without health insurance for 3 months last year and lost over $1000 back on our tax return. That isn’t fair. We didn’t go on government insurance due to my husbands pride. If him or the kids got sick, we would have made payment arrangements to self pay… The government is enabling free rides at the expense of the rest of us and it really isn’t fair.
I don’t mean to be harsh and I certainly understand having health problems, my sincere thoughts to you… I just don’t like the “free healthcare” connotation at it isn’t really free…the worker pays for it all thru taxes. 😔

      • Jenny

I don’t understand. You pay for it through taxes, then are “too proud” to use it when you need it? That doesn’t make sense.

  30. Jen

Used it often, but price seems to go up. Once it’s on file w pharmacy it stays on file.
-often won’t quote price til already filled.
-go to drug distributors site sometimes they have is discounts also.
-For. Those that don’t have insurance check ur Latino community they often have free clinics (open to all) that provide dr. Visits and free Meds, usually on a Saturday and here takes about two hours but for 9 free scripts, dr. Visit and blood work not a bad thing. I help care for someone who does this once a month,

  31. beth

I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion for this. My daughter gets severe migraines more than 15 times a month. She just got qualified to do botox. I paid a little over $1,000. I have a high deductible ($3,000) She is getting ready to do a second treatment, you do it every 3 months. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

      • beth

I tried this route when she first got approved. They want so much personal info such as SS#, income tax records etc. I am nervous doing this to get maybe up to $200 off, as they quoted me on the phone. Thanks for replying, appreciate it.

  32. Susie

For those who have serious illnesses and see multiple Drs it’s ultra important to get ALL your scripts filled at the same pharmacy. Sometimes Dr A doesn’t know about scripts written for you from Dr B and some medications should not be taken with others. When you use a single pharmacy, the computer flags possible drug interactions.

  33. Chantel

I agree with other posters that if GoodRx doesn’t lessen the expense of your specific medication to go to the manufacture. There was a major change in my Rx plan this year and my Farxiga went from a contract rate of $15/mo to more than $250/mo. I went to the manufacture website and was able to print out a discount card bringing my out of pocket to $0 for 24 months for that specific medicine. I am hoping by the time the 24 months is up that the cost has come down or this new Rx plan will have changed.

  34. Katie

I recently had a prescription that was too high out of pocket cost for me so with the doctor’s blessing, I called my insurance company and got a list of lower cost alternatives. I gave the list to my doctor and he picked a similar, lower cost script for me.

  35. AngieO

I have got info from many sources, saying that a plant based diet can stop and in many cases reverse diseases. They always recommend meat and milk and cheeses intake to a very minimum. And of course eat as much organic foods as possible.

    • justme

Yes AngieO we need to eat our veggies but people do get things in life. We’re living longer these days and unfortunately many of us have things happen to us. Diet does not cure everything. It helps but it does not reverse every possible affliction out there. Thank God there are meds for people like us who need them for which diet alone doesn’t cure and reverse our ailments.

  36. Kristen

Hey Moms – Since we’re on the topic of prescriptions, does anyone have a recommendation for an as needed migraine medication (already take a preventative daily) that’s safe to use during pregnancy? Currently use Relpax and Zomig but the DR said they are a no go for pregnancy.

    • beth

My daughter has been on Topomax, Maxalt and Imitrex. Not sure if these are safe during pregnancy though. I would do a google search and of course, whatever your dr agrees to.

  37. Stefanie

I’m looking for a discount on the medication Pristiq ER 50mg. It’s over $300 out of pocket, which is insane. I lost my teaching job and my insurance ended June 30 (which I didn’t realize until the pharmacy called). I’ve tried this website and all sorts of “discount cards” looked up online, and the lowest I’ve gotten it to was $258 with the help of the CVS at Target pharmacy. ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated. Times are tough for me and for my family right now.

    • Jenny

Have you tried asking your doctor if he/she has samples to augment your prescription? Esp with psychiatric medications, where sometimes many have to be tried until you find one that works, doctors have samples so you don’t have to commit to buying something before knowing if the medication is a right fit for you or not. Anyhow, worth a shot.

  38. Melloddie

I have pretty decent insurance through my hubby, but i just noticed recently if you have mobisave app, on the last tab there is a thing for prescription savings. I don’t know if anyone here tried it and if it’s any good
