I’m trying this, thank you! I like that the problems are illustrated so the kids know why they are doing division, etc. My son loves comic books, too, so I hope this helps and I hope it is not too basic. I don’t know if it is just me, but I have to fill in a lot of blanks that my kids don’t seem to be learning in (elementary) school. They spend a lot of time on things that seem superfluous to me!
You are not alone! We’ve been filling in the gaps for the past two years too spending about 2 hrs a day on what they aren’t getting at school for whatever reason. For our school there is a lot of random down time blocked off during the day which is independent…surely not what we had when we were little. Oh and iPad time on Fridays…I’m like really?!
Yes, we have independent time, too, and this year, my elementary-age kids do most of their in-school work online, which creates a slew of problems including wasted time (freezing, waiting while the device thinks and loads, etc.) and frustration.
That’s crazy! Little kids aren’t going to know how to write properly if it’s mostly online. Besides that there is that connection between writing leading to reading better etc. that I’m afraid they are losing. Thank goodness for good parents that help fill in the gaps! Hang in there!!
Oh my goodness, I am so thankful to hear that I am not alone. My kids have had to sit and do nothing an entire day because their computer wouldn’t be working properly. Then they come home and don’t know any of what they are about to be tested on. They aren’t allowed to bring home textbooks so I have to google and find the book pages that I can and teach my kids entire lessons. Might as well homeschool them, because school has become a joke. I bend over backwards to make sure my kids do well, but most kids in the school don’t get that extra help. Then the district blames the the low test scores on being in a low income area, when it is really poor teaching. So infuriating!
I am currently subbing in a local school distric; I really enjoy it. But I have to say that our education system is so broken!! The kids are missing out on so much learning due to common core curriculum as well as multiple test required throughout the year! And I won’t even start on the math…it is just ridiculous!! π£
I love a good book deal, thanks!
Not a fan of common core math…we had the hardest time explaining it to a first grader who had to do so many extra steps to just do what should be simple math. I couldn’t believe how ridiculous it was until we were in it.
If you think the math is bad, just wait until the problems with balanced literacy / sight words comes to light. Phonics FIRST!!! And no guessing on the spelling! Sounding words out is not best practice!
If anyone’s child is having trouble reading, I highly recommend starting with “Doodling Dragons” for a younger child, and an adult can read the book “Uncovering the Logic of English” by Denise Eide. It’s important to learn the different sounds the letters make as well as phonograms, not just focus on sight words.
