bye bye Verizon and my $350.00 payment a month, for 5 lines, I am diffidently interested in this

I actually switched from Verizon to Google Fi in May and I love it! Service is almost as good as Verizon, but I went from ~$60 a month for just my line to ~$35! How it works is that you can add data to your service for $10 per GB. (You can also choose to purchase one of their phones with the plan and pay for it over two years, otherwise there is no contract). BUT HERE IS THE KICKER: Whatever you don’t use in data, you receive in credit for the next month! So I typically use only half a GB a month, so I get $5 credited toward the next month’s bill! So my $35 a month covers unlimited talk and text, 1GB a month, and the cost of the phone! I got the Nexus 5X and it is a great phone!

How high are taxes and fees?

The reason I quit Verizon were the high unpredictable fees. I did a money-back guarantee trial pre-iPhone days, decided it wasn’t for me, was receiving charges for them for months after I returned their phone.

Also, I quit AT&T, after they wouldn’t budge on charging me less for services I don’t need on my aging phone. Just got fed up with paying for what I don’t use. Now I have Freedompop – they also have their issues and you have to stay vigilant to avoid surprise charges, turn off auto reload etc, service can be iffy and they are becoming like the rest but with refurbished devices – at least the cost of data is still low. Best option for cheap semi-reliable service.

I would be willing to try others, would pay a bit more for reliability.

Cricket is good service (AT&T lines) and inexpensive per month. I pay $45 unlimited talk text data (includes all taxes & fees). They have another plan which is cheaper. You might check them out.

My husband beta tested this plan last year. We ended up switching him to cricket. He constantly had issues getting service even though it showed service. He wouldn’t receive calls even when the phone rang on the other persons end. We had high hopes for it, but this is one thing that we didn’t find that Google has successfully achieved just yet

Darn! Sorry to hear it did not work well for him Paige. Thanks for sharing your experience!

My husband and I have been using Project Fi since January. Service has been great and customer service even better. I was bummed that I bought the Nexus 5X for $400 and it went down $100 and now $200. Great phone though. I just switched us to the group plan today, will save us $5 more. We both use less than gb, we both have wifi at work so it’s been no problem.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Sweet! Thanks for sharing Ashley! Good to know how well it has worked for you!

I’ve had this service for almost a year, I have a Nexus 6. (I bought it thanks to your deal alert, got a 64GB on Amazon for $200!) There are pros and cons — the pro is that if you don’t use a lot of data, you can get super cheap phone bills, since the data is $10/GB and they only charge you for what you use. If you pay for it and don’t use it, they give you a refund, so that’s nice. But we’ve traveled quite a bit in the last year, and I almost always didn’t get service where we were, while everyone else did — so there are some disadvantages. Overall, I pay about $30-$35 per month, so it’s been great – but it’s come at a bit of a cost when I can’t get service. It’s always worth a shot, if you don’t like it – there’s no obligation! πŸ™‚

That’s what I remember about the Google Offers program that they tried a while back, comparable to Groupon. They refunded me a few months after I did not use my offer/voucher, it expired and they just send me the money back to my cc. With Groupon, of course if you don’t use the voucher, they will never refund you which is one of several reasons why I had slowed down big time on getting Groupons.

We’ve has ProjectFi since June and we love it! I’m a SAHM so my line is cheap (because I don’t use a lot of data) last month’s bill was $33 including taxes! I don’t have any issues with service! Back when I was working the only phones that got signal in our building were ATT but my ProjectFi phone got great service (including calls) over WiFi.

Is 10gb Alot of data or will I run out? Do they just automatically add more data when you run out?
