Does anyone know if they still sell American Girl gift cards at Costco?

    • Jaclyn

From what I have heard they will not be carrying them this year.

  2. Erin

The store near me is not participating :-p

    • Bobbi

My store isn’t participating either. 🙁

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Bummer 🙁

The 29th is also bricktober with legos. It’s a make and take.

Def. Check store listing for the AG. I checked NY and only 4 locations are listed as participating and none are even close to me 🙁

So are AG stores closing? I’m surprised to see their stuff in toys r us

    • Emily

I think that they are facing stiff competition from Target’s Our Generation dolls and have to adapt. They are also selling the dolls at Kohls. Our mall just opened a temporary American Girl store for the holidays but it is clearly temporary.

I dont think they are closing. I read in an article that they want girls to be able to experience the joy of shopping for their doll even without an AG store nearby. None of the toys r us or kohl’s near me are selling the dolls because we have the AG store less than 45 minutes away.

I am upset about the direction AG has taken in the past year. They have even change the quality of their dolls. Buying online even lost it’s appeal to me as we are now charged tax since some items can be purchased in our state now.

I am so sad, I live in Chicago and the only one in Illinois is in Joliet, about an hour away..

I don’t think making the dolls available in Toys R Us and Kohls is smart for American Girl. I know they’re owned by Mattel now so their marketing folks are probably tempted to start putting them on the shelves right next to Barbie. But American Girl can charge $100+ for a doll whose competitors are going for ~$25 because of quality, attention to detail and exclusivity. We’re lucky that they built an American Girl store near us a couple years ago so we’ve been a couple times and even had lunch there for my daughter’s sixth birthday. There’s something magical about the whole store being dedicated to the dolls with displays, custom hooks in the restrooms, etc. that you’re not going to get from walking into Toys R Us.

I’m also disappointed with the way they’re re-doing the classic historic dolls so the children will be more likely to want the matching outfits – again, in my opinion, historical accuracy was one of the things that made AG unique.

Maybe I’m biased though, I used to drool over the catalogue and subscribe to the magazine back in the 90’s when there were only historical dolls and they were made by Pleasant Company.

But marketing aside, it should be a fun (and FREE) event at Toys R Us – which was the point of Hip’s post 🙂

My son loves Pokemon and collects/trades the cards. He will love this event. Thanks for letting us know about it Collin. You are the BEST!!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Happy to hear he will enjoy it! YW!

Thanks for posting Collin and team! My TRU will host the AG giveaway and only 10 minutes away so my kids and I are definitely going! I also have a 20% off online coupon code for American girl for the first to post their email. Won’t be using it so hope someone needs it!

If you are looking to buy Lea girl of the year, head over to Kohls. You can’t use coupons on her but you can earn Kohls cash and rewards points. I bought the doll, and two animals for about $160, got triple points with the rewards card and $30 kohls cash!

Went to toys r us for the pokemon event. Waited an hour and a half to be one of the first 50 people to get the pokemon figure. They didn’t tell us until the start time that they didn’t have the figures. Even though people were waiting for almost 2 hours. And they did nothing about it. Un-freaking-believable! Not shopping at toys r us anymore. I’d suggest everyone do the same.
