No, its a stand alone system. Only difference between the Echo and dot is the speaker. Echo has a better speaker. QVC just had these as the today special value yesterday(bed, bath& beyond is a better deal though) and if you go to the QVC website and search for the Dot, you can watch the video of the on air presentation and I think that will be helpful for you as to what this does!
