Don’t waste your money on a Maytag front loader! All we had was trouble. It was so bad that Maytag refunded our money and picked up the machine.

I’ve had a maytag front loader for 15 years now. It’s needed a couple of repairs along the way but nothing unreasonable, especially considering how long it has lasted.

I have a Maytag top loader Bravos washer & I haven’t been happy with it either. It was only a couple of years old and had to have a major part replaced but for some reason the part was unavailable for over a month. Fortunately, I had purchased an extended warranty from Lowe’s and they ended up buying out the warranty so I got a refund in the form of a Lowe’s gift card for the cost of the washer. I would definitely recommend buying an extended warranty for all appliances these days. They don’t make them like they used to as the saying goes. I think Maytag was bought out by Whirlpool so that could explain why the quality has gone down.

Oh bummer! Sorry to hear you have had trouble with the Maytag brand 🙁 Thanks for the honest feedback Lana!

Looking for a new set also but top loader. Anyone buy one recently that they could recommend?

    • dealzgurl

I’m looking for a recommendation too. I need a top loader as well. I’ve been searching for months now but it’s been hard to find something priced well with good reviews. I know no machine is perfect and some people get lemons but some people report real issues with their machines.Guess they truly don’t make stuff like they used too.

Our repairman said the same thing. Stick with the low tech knobs.

I have an LG and love mine. I have a big family and we live on a farm…we push our washer/dryer to the limit and love our LGs.

As someone else noted, when our two year old Whirlpool Cabrio died, we were told to get one with knobs, instead of an electronic panel, because there are less issues and they are easier/cheaper to repair. The cost to repair our Cabrio was going to be more than the cost of buying a new machine. So, we bought a Maytag top-loader, model MVWC565FW. We also bought the five-year extended warranty (and got it for the price of a 2-year warranty — don’t forget to negotiate, as we also got $40 off the price and free delivery, even though we live outside the free delivery zone). Five days after we started using it …… it stopped working. The store is delivering a new machine tomorrow, because it’s been less than 30 days. I’m hoping it was just a lemon, but at least we have the warranty.

Speed Queen. 5 year warranty and expected to last 25. Our clothes have never been as clean either.

    • Paige

I have had a speed queen set for a few months now and love them. As others said I also went with the knobs vs the electronic controls. This set has a super long warranty and the expected life is 25 years!

    • Wren

I was just reading about Speed Queen the other day, I think I’ll try those when I buy next year!

    • M

My husband is an appliance tech. He says SpeedQueens are the most reliable and go the distance. Our 20 yr old SpeedQueen keeps ticking along. 💙

I just purchased from Home Depot a Maytag Centennial MCT top load washer and dryer and we love it. The reason we went with model because my husband and son work out in construction and the washer had the middle agitator all the way up the new ones with none all the new ones don’t have them now do not clean your clothes at all.Watch for a sale we got a good deal plus free delivery….

Anyone in the market for a washer should think about paying a few bucks to subscribe to Consumer Reports Digital Edition to get access to their extensive reviews. You get online access to back issues and can easily pull up the washer and dryer ratings. Reading store reviews just isn’t the same thing as the kind of testing CR does. We don’t make any major purchases without consulting the CR review — buying their top rated values (‘Best Buys”) is a very easy strategy to maximize your purchasing power.

I never buy a big ticket item without doing the research first. Most items are easy to research. There is consistency in the reviews. But sometimes they are so frustrating. Sometimes people rave about the same exact item that others warn you against. It is hard to know what to get. You end up making a decision, crossing your fingers and hoping that you got a good one instead of a lemon.

I bought a top of the line LG washer and dryer with all the bells and whistles. (3 yrs. ago)
    haven’t had any issues.
I find that people will have issues by overloading their machines with clothes and not reading their manuals.
mine, I have to drain the water from a tube once a month, and clean a filter at the bottom. ( not a big deal,) I also clean the dryer filter after each and every use. I been in homes that the clothes filter had 2 inches of lint on them. then they wonder why it takes longer for their clothes 2 dry. also people never check their clothes pockets and all that stuff ends up in their washers, causing problems too.
I know people that put anywhere from 10 to 15 pairs of jeans in their washers. and then into their dryers. this will cause issues.
once a month I put my washer on self clean. my last front loaders were whirlpool duet, 11 yrs old and never had to call a repair guy.
as of matter of fact. I never have called a repair guy on any of my appliances ever.
my fridge, once a month I clean the condenser coils. my dishwasher has a filter than I remove and run it under water to clean it.
it’s all how you maintain them. you take care of them, they take care of you.

Just bought from sears Kenmore elite 6.2 top loader and 9.2 matching dryer. Huge, think of a jacuzzi that washes. Amazing, I have a teenager it cleans everthing spotless. Expensive. The best part was I received over 250 shop your way points. Applied them to a new stainless steel convection range it only cost 350, then with those points from the oven got a stainless steel microwave for 20 dollars.

This will likely qualify you for a rebate through your electric company too as it’s energy star rated. This makes and models is highly recommended by consumer reports as well.

We also bought a Speed Queen after much research and the long warranty. We are going on at least year 3 or 4 with our machine and it’s still ticking. One interesting thing about Speed Queen is this apparently is the brand used by many laundromats…that in itself speaks of it’s durability and long lasting life. If it can handle a laundromat, then it certainly can handle home usage.
