We have Sling and really like it. We use it on a computer connected to our TV and on our iPhones. Just make sure you have a good wi fi signal in every room in which you want to use it.

  2. Nancy

I could not get it to work on my Samsung smart TV or DVR. Does work with Roku.

    • Rb

Nancy, it works great with Roku on our smart TV. Been using Sling for about a year now.

This is timely!! I’ve been back and forth with Xfinity and Uverse all week trying to get the best deal for tv/internet. We’ve pretty much decided to get rid of tv to save money 😩

  4. kristen

How many tv/ devices can you have on one account?

    • CJ

Only one on the basic. You can have it on all your tvs but only watch one at a time. Also, PS4 does not have an app for it so you’ll need a streamer if you normally just use your ps4 (sling evidently has a contract with Microsoft so they will most likely never go on the Sony (ps4) platform)

      • Garfield

It could be because Sony offers their streaming service and they don’t want to offer it. I think it’s called Vue.

    • Patricia

You can have it on as many devices as you chose but Sling Blue is the only service that will allow up to three simultaneous streams. So, if you need to allow for more than one use at a time make sure you go with Blue or Orange and Blue combination subscriptions.

Keep in mind if you are going to cancel they go by the hour. So if you started at 2 pm, they renew after the 2 months at 2 pm and charge your card. I had to fight them on this to get my money returned.

    • AP

Thanks, I did not know this. I had a free month trial and cancelled. Now I’m on my first paid month with a deal that gave a free roku stick with 1 paid month of service. I don’t know if I’ll keep it after that. Anyway, my tip in response to readers about your post, I always set cancellation reminders in my phone to cancel a day or 2 before, just to be safe. I rarely cancel anything on the final day.

Can someone who has this explain it a little better to me? Can I stream with my device and use Apple TV to watch it? How many tvs can be used? Our cable bill keeps going up every month and our salaries stay the same. Do the math and you will see why we need to drop cable. Looking for other options. Please help! 😩

I am doing the same. From my research there are few things to pay attention to: all these streaming TV services are limited to (usually) 2 streams. I am not sure if Sling is tied up to 2 particular devices, if you can switch them whenever you want, etc. what this means is that if you have 4 smart TVs or devices you can watch sling on only the first 2 you authorized.

Then you have to pay attention if they offer local channels and if they stream live. I personally don’t know.

These services like Sling are called streaming (IPTV). You can watch them only over the internet, therefore you have to have reliable internet.

I am in the process of setting up the following:
I bought an antenna (amazon sells them Inexpensive), I bought Tivo Romia OTA and I will buy in the future Tivo minis. This will ensure that I have live TV and I can record, pause, etc. If you buy a splitter/amplifier distributor you can watch live TV on however TVs you choose with one antenna but you can pause, record, etc on only the TVs that have the Tivos.

For the other channels I have DirecTV Now. What I like about this service is that you are limited to 2 streams (2 people watching at the same time) but it is not tied up to 2 particular devices, you can log in at any device you choose at that time.

Now the deals: currently Tivo Roamio OTA 1TB is $370 at Best Buy and you can save $25 when using Visa Checkout. I just bought mine this way.

DirecTV Now is once again offering free Apple TV if you prepay for 3 months. However, I think they raised the monthly prices. I signed up for $35/month and I am grandfathered. They say that this year they will be adding cloud DVR. Meaning that you can record without having to buy additional hardware. They do not offer local channels at this time. I hope they will add them eventually.

Hope this helps a little bit.

It’s not nearly so complicated or expensive to cut the cable. Live TV (and therefore TIVO) is becoming a thing of the past anyway, or for special occasions (like the Superbowl, if you like that). You just need a streaming device (IMO Roku 3, 2016 version is currently the best in terms of quality/value) for each TV. No need for TIVO because with streaming, you watch what *you* want when *you* want it, pause/forward/rewind at will, and you’re no longer bound to alter your life to match a network schedule. If you really need to just turn on the TV and have it choose your entertainment for you (like do now and then), you can switch to free network TV via antenna, or use the free Pluto channel (on Roku + other devices), where you choose a genre (Onion news and cheesy sci-fi are favorites) and let it do its thing. Most channels (which are ~ equivalent to stations) allow you to watch on unlimited devices, the only exceptions I have found are Netflix (depending on your plan, buy if you want more devices, you can pay an extra couple of $) and Sling (which costs a great deal more than the others and can’t replace their content – eg if you watch shows on Hulu or Netflix, you might need some luck to find them on Sling). Sling is DirectTV’s effort at controlling the streaming market by mimicking cable because consumers are losing interest in overpriced + restrictive cable services, but at my home, on all new devices with great internet speed, it constantly crashed and it was rare I could find something I wanted to watch at the time I wanted to watch it. Pluto TV (free channel) is a similar concept, but theirs actually works and is free. Phew! Long but I wanted to share. Trying SlingTV may be worth it after all, but do give the top streaming services a try as well to compare (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Seeso). Hope it helps someone!

I like watching the news for example that is why I want live channels and that is why I invested in antenna and DVR/Tivo. Otherwise I am with you on streaming the movies. I have tried all of the movie streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, etc. and Sling is Dish. DirecTV got on board recently with DirecTV now.

      • AP

I agree it’s not that hard or expensive. Just giving a different perspective to readers so as not to scare off potential cord cutters. I already had Rokus in almost every room, Netflix and Amazon prime. So when I cut the cord, I just had to buy HD antennas for each TV to get local channels, and I added Hulu to our lineup. Easy peasy! I’m trying sling now, but will probably cancel due to the price. I miss a few shows here and there (hello ID discovery!), but have learned to survive without them. I will NEVER go back to cable again!!! 🙂 📺

        • AP

Also, don’t forget a lot of networks offer full episodes online for free. Pull them up on your laptop, connect to the tv with an hdmi cable, and voila! That’s how I watch dateline, for example.

  7. Julie

Been looking for other options, currently paying over $100 for Dish… wasting so much money on tv bill!

    • Julie

Same here!!! We had a promo didn’t know expired. From @$100 to $171/month 😱

  8. Jean

I got rid of cable with no regards and use Netflix we have a 3 person account and use it at 2 different households. Netflix has so many original programs that very good and entertaining. I was thinking of trying Sling too. This seems like a good way to see if I like it.

  9. Jim

We tried Sling, but dropped it for PlayStation Vue once that went nationwide. My opinion is that Vue is much better with more value and an unlimited cloud DVR.

Downside of VUE though is that they dropped the Nick channels over money so I dropped them and went back to Spectrum who was offering a great deal at the time.

  10. Maddy Argo

Looks cool I want to try it but already have Netflix and Hulu and Amazon prime video. Need to cancel some of them. Never have enough time right now. This one seems like there are way more premium tv shows and channels. You can stream the on Apple TV or Amazon fire stick thing. No need for cable.

  11. Lindsey D

We love Sling! We had the sports package for college football and then dropped it when the season was over. Lots on demand too. Sling plus Netflix/Amazon Prime Video is still 1/2 the price of our old cable bill!

  12. Kylie

I have a roku tv with no cable.I have hulu on my phone.I can’t understand how to get the tv to stream.I went to best buy and bought the cord and attached 1 end to tv and other end to my pad.The tv still received no signal.

  13. Holly

Kylie…first, you have to have home wi-fi service. Once your Roku finds your wi-fi, you then go to Hulu to enter you sign-on/password. If you can’t figure it out, go to hulu.com, and it will give you instructions. It should take no more than 10 mins tops.

  14. Rhonda Rought

I am NOT….We got screwed….Got charged then couldn’t get logged on because they say we had no account. Couldn’t establish a new….
