ANy advice in general on getting low price deals on cruises or on-board perks and spending?

    • Lisa

Kattro, we’ve done Carnival several times and always pleased. Just took a trip on the Carnival Dream out of the port New Orleans with extended family, many who had never cruised before. My 2 cents…we’ve had a “port hole” room before and a balcony and would never go back to anything but a balcony room. It’s worth the additional expense. As far as all of the cruise lines drink packages (different for alcohol and soda), you really need to analyze your own situation. There is a “break even” point with regards to them. For example, on Carnival, if you have 5 or more drinks a day, you would be okay in getting your money’s worth for the drink packages. Also something I feel is really valuable, the drink package would be totally worth it if you really just wanted to experiment with various drinks and not be concerned about wasting something if you didn’t like it. Also, if you can at all help it, always carry on/carry off your own luggage, you get off much faster. Just a few tidbits we’ve learned over the years. Bon Voyage!

    • Steph

You might consider an interior room. They are a bit cheaper. We always go with an interior room, because we are never in our room much except for to sleep. Just a suggestion:)

We like Norwegian cruise lines. I did my own research and purchased through a no frills online travel agent. It was great!

  3. Krissy

Cruise with Carnival. They are way more affordable! I’ve cruised on carnival, royal Caribbean and Disney. Carnival is the most affordable but Disney being the most expensive was by far my favorite!

    • Lisa

We love Carnival as well, Krissy. Can’t beat the price. Their staff always work their tutu’s off. Gonna give Princess a try though this fall simply due to scheduling.

      • K

I would NOT recommend Carnival. Had a horrific experience, went for the cheap ticket but didn’t end up being that cheap after all the nickle and diming they do. No matter what cruise line you choose, read all the fine print. We were stuck on a super old boat with little to do, and they totally skipped our first port (we only had two total planned, so we only got to stop once). We were given a whopping $50 gift card after we fought with them about it. Lesson learned… I’ll never do Carnival again.

I find the best deals on vacationstogo.com. It’s fun to see where we could go and how much it will cost. And they offer last minute deals which is great if you have that kind of flexibility. Also, joining the cruise lines member club will sometimes get you in on member only deals. And once you’ve cruised, you can often get ‘past guest’ deals.

  5. Tricia

I’m a cruise novice. How much $ are we talking about?

    • Britney

It varies widely, based on time of the year, ship and number of days. We have cruised in early October Freedom of the Seas with two people in an interior cabin for $649 a person. (Side note- we are a family of four but we prefer to get two cabin vs trying to share with our teen kids!) We have also cruised early April Jewel of the Seas for $mid 700 for balcony cabin. Now Summer prices go up considerably but I still feel like it’s a good value for the quality you get. Cruisecritic.com forums are a huge resource of information.

    • Tina

It varies widely! We took an Alaskan cruise off season. We have been a lot of places but it was our best vacation ever! Keep in mind you are far better off to book your own port excursions or just explore. You can wrap up a ton of money if you’re not careful.

      • Lisa

Tina, I agree that booking your own excursions are cheaper. However, from an experience just 2 months ago…. caution! We did book through Carnival one of our excursions. We were in Cozumel and took a ferry over to an island with a few other tour groups from our ship. One of the tours’ van broke down, so our ferry had to wait for that group to go back to Cozumel. The Carnival ship had to wait for all of us. We were OVER an hour late in leaving port. Had we booked our own excursion and a van broke down, Carnival had zero obligation in holding up their departure. Booking through Carnival does give us that piece of mind knowing they can’t leave us!

First of all carnival is not the least Expensive. It depends on ever you depart from and your ports. I cruise 6-7 times a year. I’ve been on Norwegian for 30 a night including all drinks. I’ve done msc. I’ve been on celebrity. Personally I do like carnival. They have great deals.
So remember port fees will be an additional 100 to 150 per Person
Tipping is 12-15 per day per person
Alcohol is not included ( a few Norwegian ships will include it).
    Pop is not included
Some speciality restaurants are not included
    Good coffee is not included
Excursions are usually 75 or more per person.
There are a lot additional fees
But, I love Cruising. You need to do your research and bargain shop.
Typical I would say I spend 3 times the actually cruise cost per person.

    • Dee

Agree with this. It’s usually 3-4 times the rate by the time all taxes, gratuities, excursions, etc are added on, (I’m also including drinks and photos in that, we always have a few cocktails and buy a few photos.). I’ve never found the drink packages worth it, we simply don’t drink that much and usually we get the special of the day which comes in a souvenir cup. Those are not included in the packages, you just get a small discount on those with the package. We have tried the soda package and that also turned out to be not worth the cost. Unless you drink an unhealthy amount of soda, just bring your own or buy a few you want one. We cruise on carnival and they allow you to bring up to 12 cans of soda and one bottle of wine per person when you board. We usually just bring one bottle of wine for the two of us. They also have good deals on bottled water, we pre-purchase and have a case waiting in our cabin when we board.

Why is there a fee to port?

    • Emily

You pay airport fees when you land, you pay port fees when you dock. They’re usually wrapped up in the cost.

  8. Steph

We have cruised carnival and Norwegian. Norwegian was much much better all around. The food on carnival was not as good as Norwegian. We never buy the drink packages. Water won’t hurt you for a week!

    • Tea

I never understand the people paying hundreds of dollars for the “Soda package” lol

  9. lisa

We cruised with Royal Carribean last year in May to Alaska, It was wonderful! Highly recommend.

    • Vinnie

I’m cruising to Alaska with Royal Caribbean and looking forward to what “Cruises Only” has set up.

  10. Tea

If you watch, Norwegian offers “kids sail free” once or twice a year. We have four kids and would not be able to afford to go without this deal. We keep “extras” to a bare minimum. I would like be able to vacation more often than spend thousands of dollars on a once in a lifetime style trip.

    • Niki

I hate Norwegian… I posted this last year but to remind anyone who hasn’t heard this. I paid up front for my family to go in June out of Boston and then four months before we were suppose to sale I got an email saying that they cancelledl our cruise because of ” maintenance ” this didn’t make since because three years ago they have done a million dollar Maintenance. Not only did they want me to switch boats and switch ports and switch dates. But they expected me to pay the increase in costs.. not a fan and will never go with them. I chose carnival instead and had a blast!

  11. MekaRTR

Fyi, there’s a $100 back on $500+ American Express deal for various cruise lines. Check your online account.

  12. Alissa

Right now Norwegian also has a really great offer. Their ‘free at sea’ promotion makes for a really great deal if traveling with a 3rd and/or 4th passenger or for adults who enjoy the free unlimited bar/drinks option and free signature dining! Just for reference, my family of 4 is sailing out of NYC on one of Norwegian’s newer ships (Breakaway) in October for 7 days in a balcony cabin for less than $2700. That includes the 3rd and 4th passenger free and unlimited beverages for hubby and I 🙂 Cruises are a great way to see lots of destinations while on one vacation! They are also a fantastic vacation option for families as they offer tons of activities/amenities to enjoy together as well as excellent kids clubs for the littles and spas/casinos/specialty restaurants for the adults so EVERYONE has an awesome vacation!

I happen to be a travel agent and I’d love to answer any questions you may have 🙂 Check out my website: http://www.thetripdesigner.com 🙂

Could someone that frequently cruises explain why the price is so much more to cruise with 5 people? We have 3 children and it seems to jump considerably from 4 to 5. We would love to go on a cruise with all of the kids. Just seems silly to pay so much more for having a 3rd child with us.

    • Katie

I was just looking for advice on cruising with three kids. It does become crazy expensive to take three!

      • Britney

Compare prices getting connecting rooms or side by side, if they are older. Often there is very little difference in price and so nice to have the extra bathroom/beds. And unless they have changed it, they do not show family room prices online but you must call to get a quote for these rooms. There are limited number of them, so supply vs. demand.

    • Ashley57

There are very few five person rooms. Try two different rooms.

  15. Kathleen

I was able to call tonight to get the lower rate on the cruise I already have booked with RC!

  16. CW

Has anyone tried booking Harmony of the Seas with this rate?

  17. dee

Use ebates through expedia and you will get back 10% on your cruise! I emailed ebates and there is no maximum cash back! That means if your trip is $1000 you will get $100 from ebates!

  18. MichelleL

Katie, I cruised on Carnival last year at the end of August on a 5 day Caribbean cruise out of New Orleans with our family of five in one room and paid 1500 total including all taxes/port fees plus a $100 on board credit. You can call Carnival and ask them the names of the ships that accomodate 5 to a room, then you can see if one of those ships is leaving from where your want to go. That is what i did. The room is tight with 5 people, but it worked out fine for us.
