Love Unicorns & Starbucks? 🦄

Starting tomorrow, April 19th and running through April 23rd, Starbucks will be offering up a special Unicorn Frappuccino – yes, I am totally serious! The base of this drink will be a crème Frappuccino with mango syrup mixed with sweet pink powder and then layered with a sour blue powder topping and topped of with vanilla whipped cream and a sprinkle of sweet pink and sour blue topping.

Although I am not finding the details posted on the Starbucks site or social media yet, one of my sidekicks just ran into our local Starbucks to confirm that this drink will indeed be available starting tomorrow, 4/19. She begged one of the baristas to whip one up for her right now, but no such luck! Darn!

Will this be ok for kids? I know my kids love their strawberries and cream frapuccinos . 💕

    • megan

We order different flavors for me (I don’t drink coffee) and the kids all the time. I specify no coffee when ordering.

    • Cassandane

It’s a non-coffee cream base. The sugar bomb, however, might not be ok for kids!!! 🙂

    • cathy

Of course not, its junk. But most takeout food is. What is “pink powder anyway”

      • Gaura Priya

I agree.. If it has dyes in it, then it’s very bad for kids!

        • Brie

Check out the ingredient list. No artificial dyes!!

  2. Daniela

This is available at big city Starbucks on their special secret menu. I think this is a good Instagram purchase but it doesn’t sound like it would taste good. I am sure they will have lines though!

    • Kelly

A friend that works at Starbucks said it tastes like licking a sour patch kid. 😋

  3. Allison

It almost looks too pretty to drink! Lol! Might have to try one. Thanks for posting Collin!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re welcome!

  4. Your conscience

Disgusting amount of food coloring. Gross. Enjoy your unicorn chemicals.

    • Kristy

      Yay for yummy disgusting chemicals!!!

    • Misako

Thought the same thing….Looks cute but I will pass.

    • Karen

      Thanks, I will!

      • L.G.

I will too. Maybe if all the whiney people pass on it we won’t have to wait in line. Lol yummy.

        • Charmel

I have not seen a single comment where there was a whine? How does someone saying I pass become a whine?

          • cathy

Really. That’s what people say when they know its wrong but they get defensive because they want it.

    • Emily

I will enjoy my food safe dyes. 🙂 This beverage is too cute to not get.

      • Slms

        Lol Agreed!

    • Peach Pie

Mmmmm, disgusting amount of food coloring and unicorn chemicals! (in my Homer Simpson voice)

    • Me

I agree….I love free, but that looks absolutely disgusting. I’m going to pass as well.

      • Jen

        It’s free???

        • Daniela

Not free. Prob $6 or more.

      • Me

Wow, I thought it was free….and I still wouldn’t drink it for free. So I guess if you have to pay for it, well, then….still nope! Looks gross. I would rather go to Jamba Juice for something that color. I would be curious if any of you get it…..does it taste good?

    • Alex

We are dye free in my household for many reasons, and I try to buy organic. And yet, as an adult that lives unicorns, I’m seriously tempted to go get one. So, I understand your position, and yet… I will probably still splurge and get one for the kids and I to drink.

      • wiseguys95

Really,”Really?” your comment is terribly rude and quite a stretch. Attacking her parenting just because YOU don’t understand someone’s eating choices makes no sense.

      • Melissa P.

You must be super fun at parties 😂😂😂

    • Mel

All food is made up of chemicals. Let me introduce you to the periodic table…

      • Charmel

What? My periodic table does not have grapes or apples on it? What are you talking about?

        • Emily

Fun Info!! 🙂 Apples are made up of several chemicals! Take for example, Alpha-Linolenic-Acid (an essential fatty acid found in fruits, veggies, and nuts), the chemical formula is C18H30O2 – It’s made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen! All things found on your periodic table!
You can turn food into science!

      • Amy

Real food doesn’t contain artificial flavors and colors, which are petroleum based. Dyes have been shown to cause behavior problems in children. Then there’s the sugar.

        • Rachel Carroll

I agree. My son has ADHD and even though conventional doctors won’t agreen its bad for them, a nutritionist will. I find I lt really sad because several companies produce items like fruit snacks that are totally organic and just as colorful as the artifical color filled snacks. Studies do show that artifical colors actually effect brain chemistry, and children are especially at risk since they are still developing and much smaller than adults. I would love to see a mainstream company wise up and start using the actual fruits and veggies to dye their products, especially places like Starbucks where you are already paying that premium price to begin with.

But I do love that this is shared here for those who are interested. I also like that people can share their knowledge about what is and isn’t good, because I definitely would have like to have been told sooner.

          • Kathryn

Agree with you, but fortunately many mainstream companies are switching to natural food dyes! Starbucks actually carries great organic candies and snacks so this one confuses me…

    • dawn

      i TOTALLY AGREE!!!! NO THANKS

    • Brie

Not true! I was just looking at the ingredient list and there are no artificial food dyes.

  5. Lindsay

Clearly I’m a sucker for marketing! Thinking of taking my daughter in for one tomorrow. She would think this is the greatest. 🙈😂

    • Laura

Super cute for kids – I hope she enjoys it.

    • Holly

Wish I had a daughter, I would’ve loved this when I was little.

    • MommySpendsLess

Me too! I’ve only gone to Starbucks a handful of times, usually when I’m in serious need of iced tea and there’s nowhere else to get a semi-decent glass (Magic Kingdom being the worst) but I’m thinking of making a special trip because my 7.5yo would love this. Anyone know if they’ll be available in the Target Starbucks too?

  6. Julie

yay! it’ll be here on my birthday 🙂

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Happy Birthday Julie! 😀

  7. momof7

Hope they can make it with almond or coconut milk!

    • Stephanie

I’m sure they can for an up-charge.

    • Michelle Micci

its not vegan though as it contains white mocha in the blue syrup

      • momof7

Thank you! My kids and I just thought we might try it. I was thinking they used dye from real foods and not chemicals, too. Not sure.

  8. Laura

just looking at it – gives me a stomach ache.

  9. Stevmon

    Yay! looks good!
    Thanks for posting Collin!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re so welcome!

  10. jennifer 3

Looks like liquid cotton candy. Getting a cavity just thinking about it. Lol

    • elizabeth

I wish it was cotton candy flavored.

      • Alyssa

They have a cotton candy frape. It’s on their secret menu!

        • Jamie

It doesn’t really taste like cotton candy. I was excited to try the one on their secret menu & was disappointed.

  11. Lexy

    I want to try 🙂

  12. Anne Kellogg

Funny how we pinch and save when it comes to ourselves but will fork over 5.00 for our kids to have a beverage at Starbucks. Look closely at the marketing strategies of the car companies, fragrance companies, clothing companies, phone companies (apple) our kids are being brainwashed into these higher end products. Our children have become walking billboardsandbgive free advertising to North-face, Lululemon , Nike, hunter boots, the list goes on and on. And until they can start paying for themselves I’m not buying it. Sorry I know I’m a killjoy.

    • Maria

I totally agree!! Even when I was in middle school, when Abercrombie and Aeropostale were big, I wouldn’t buy or wear them because it’s just having to pay to advertise for them

    • Daniela

Well that is why some people pinch and save. To be able to give unicorns to their kids. Or sweet and tart unicorn drinks.

    • Happymama

I agree with you about Starbucks. I refuse to buy into Starbucks because I can make my coffee for pennies a day. Also, those artificial dyes are so bad for people (red 40 is a seizure trigger for my son). I guess I’ll never get it.
I’ll totally buy a $5 stuffed unicorn though, lol:)

      • sfashn

Starbucks is all natural now days they use, real everything so i doubt there are artificial flavors or dyes. HTH.

        • Tomoko

Don’t worry. There’s no such thing as Artificial Unicorn. I’m waiting for them to come up with Mermaid Frapp next :p

        • April

All natural? Really? Well when they came out with their coconut milk option thy were using ones with carrageenan. AKA cancer causing ingredients…maybe they’ve changed??

          • Yikes

            Well said!

  13. lisa

At first I thought it would have been good if it was strawberries or cotton candy flavor. 🦄🍓🍦🍨🍧

    • Carla

You can get the pokemon go frap. It actually is cotton candy with berries blended in.

      • Sarah

What!? Genius! Thanks for sharing, we will get that one next time!

      • momof7

        Had no idea!
The cotton candy is vanilla with raspberry 😘

  14. Ls

I’m not a coffee drinker, this looks pretty, by reading the description of this drink on the post i understand it will taste as coffee(frapuccino) and mango? Am I correct?

    • Carla

Cream based frappuccinos don’t have coffee in them.

      • LS

Oooh! Thank u! I did not know that

        • Sarah

LS-you can always ask for whatever you get to be creme based or if you’re unsure, just ask them if that particular drink can be made creme based. The baristas are typically very helpful and are happy to educate!

  15. Andrea

Not something I would drink but I’m sure my kids will love it!!

  16. Mari

    Sounds like sugar overload. >_<

  17. Lauren

I’m not a fan of mango, but thinking the other flavors may change it enough? If I have a chance to get by Starbucks, I’m trying it!

  18. Mommy2

I was in target today and was getting my Starbucks and the girls made these for themselves to try and they hated them. They are pretty though!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Oh bummer! Sorry to hear they did not care for them! Thanks for the feedback!

  19. Lisa

Thanks for sharing this my daughter told me about this a few days ago she’s super excited about this drink

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re welcome Lisa!

  20. mikeb

now my eyes have seen everything…..starbucks must be really trying to get kids into the stores. Just what they need another super sugar drink

  21. Amy

To each their own I guess, but I would not want to put this junk into my body, or my kids.

  22. lisa

I’m not a regular Starbucks customer, but this does look fun. I avoid regular whipped cream as it has gelatin in it, and wonder if there’s anything I could use as a substitute. Any ideas?

    • Candy72

You can whip canned coconut milk. ☺

    • Swiss

So Delicious has Dairy free coconut cool whip…. it goooood!

      • lisa

I’ll have to check that out! I’ll have to ask if Starbucks can whip coconut milk. Maybe they’ve already had similar requests.

  23. Tiffany

Tastes like a sour sweet tart. I hate sweet tarts. I immediately handed it back to the barista and got a caramel frap.

    • peepslob

I don’t really like Sweet Tarts either.

    • Em

Did you have to pay for it?

      • Tiffany

Yes and the barista was nice enough to exchange it because she could clearly see that I was not even willing to drink it.

  24. JA

My daughter showed me that this morning! We will be there after school, with bells on. Looks like fun!🌈

  25. Sav

Oh goodness. What a silly debate this has started. Buy it or don’t–it’s everyone’s individual choice whether to drink the pretty colors, indulge their kids, or spend their money on a non-steal. Thanks, Collin, for sharing this fun announcement!

    • beth pitt

Lol. I came on to see what all the comments were about, thought something free was going on haha

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re welcome! 😉

  26. Lor

I think it’s bad enough we eat artificial, modified and coloring on regular basis in foods we cannot avoid but to pay money for a cup of color to kill your health? Ya I’ll pass. This artificial stuff already caught up with me and Im not even 30 😬

    • sfashn

      Starbucks is ALL NATURAL

      • Lor

The other drinks are natural, but NOTHING is ever natural when it comes to colorful drinks unless it’s made out of fruits and veggies and this unicorn drink is 100% not-natural. Just a cup of paint.

      • April

        No it’s not

        • Lor

A lot of people eat all that paint and think it’s normal but those who read and explore before putting all the junk into their bodies would never even try it! I’ll pass on the drink like many others but hopefully the rest who can’t wait to try it will enjoy it😬😬

          • mel

I think April was commenting to sfashn (not your reply about a cup of paint, sometimes the comments don’t line up underneath the person you really replied to). But Starbucks posted that the colors come from fruits & vegetable powders, blended to make the pink & blue hues, (also has citric acid and something else to get that sour flavor)

  27. Steph

It’s very pretty! However, I’m a straight black coffee drinker. This would prob kill me!

  28. Alexandra

Why do half of these posts become so negative?….

    • Megan

I never comment on here but I am so glad to see someone point this out. I never remember seeing all of this on Hip before. What happened?

    • Sav

Agreed. Very unnecessary, unhelpful, and rude to Collin and her team. It’s one thing if you’ve personally tried the product and are leaving an honest review, but a lot of what’s posted is holier-than-thou soapbox preaching. Maybe it makes people feel important.

      • Brooke

I have read all the comments and I didn’t see anyone being holier than thou. Saying you don’t drink artificial colors and/or sugar is a statement. It isn’t condescending or rude.
The only problem I see is that lots of people took personal offense to the fact some people don’t eat junk.
I feel pretty confident Colin who has posted paleo recipes will not be offended if someone says they think this drink is most likely full of things kids should not be drinking.

        • Melloddie

Point on Brooke!!! I see personal choices being expressed on whether to get it or not, then I ONLY see those attacking the ones that are saying they are not getting these. I will be trying this but I also don’t see any thing wrong with those who rather not try it. I don’t think it’s reasonable to call them whiners or being negative.

        • Miriam

We must be reading different comments! Lol

      • Lola

I agree Sav. I’m looking for useful comments about whether or not to try this and the meaningful ones are buried beneath everyone’s two cents about “healthy” food! This isn’t a post about your personal food choices; it’s about a new product at Starbucks. Sheesh.

  29. Judy

I’ll pass on this bomb. It doesn’t appeal to me and it looks totally unhealthy. Just give me my coffee frap.

  30. Heidi N.

Pretty drink but the sour throws me off. I always pictured unicorns tasting like birthday cake. My daughter who is a huge Starbucks fan took one look at the picture and declared “that looks like it would give you diarrhea for 4 days!” Ahhhh, teenagers!

  31. Nicole

Brilliant marketing by Starbucks! Unicorn anything reminds me of the squatty potty commercial. 🙂

  32. Melissa

I’m a just plain coffee with cream person. I rarely order any of the fancy speciality drinks. I can’t handle the price or the calories of those drinks and simply prefer my coffee to taste like coffee, not some other flavor. But I would like at least a taste of this concoction. …

  33. Elizabeth M.

They have a Starburst frapp too. Kids love it.

  34. Joanna

This drink looks soooo pretty and cute, I’d rather just look at it though 🙂

  35. Rose

Starbucks barista gave my child a taste of the blue and pink drizzles on top of a cup of whipped cream. He loved it! He is 4.

  36. cindy

Fun discussion! I think it is cute but dont know if i would make a special trip in for it. Although, I might make the trip for the Pokemon Go version!

  37. Swiss

Lol! People logged in just to comment that it’s gross and bad for kids? 😆😝✌🏻 Don’t see any of them posting on clearance candy deals. YOLO!

I’m gonna buy it just to post an Instagram pic 🦄 💰 👋🏻But, I’m basic like that 🎯 ☕️ 👖

    • Brittany C

LOL! you’re comment wins them all!

    • Emily

You do you! 🙂 Your comment is my fave, emojis and all.

    • Daniela

Hahahahaha! Love it. Def an Instagram drink.

  38. Joanna

    Haha 👌

  39. Steph

Lol! I was just thinking…”there are going to be so many Instagram pics of this tomorrow!”😂😂😂

  40. Heather C

    Cotton candy in a cup!!

  41. riss

It looks very sweet and very artificial. I like sweets but I’ll pass. Give me caramel macchiato or caramel frap anytime:) To those who are excited to try this, may it live up to your expectations!

  42. Thor

    It’s just a drink, it’s not plutonium. 🌈🌈🌈

  43. Misty

    Sounds gross tasting.

  44. Art

I’m more concerned that this is just an ad for Starbucks. Not even am affiliate link for a discounted gift card from Raise to use or anything… What a “bummer.”

  45. Daniela

Every single college aged girl on my line today, 8 of them, ordered the unicorn. $4.95 grande. It looks absolutely beautiful. I wouldn’t drink it though. The mango plus sour flavors is weird to me but I might tweak the flavors and try it out.

  46. jos419

If people want to try it why not!?! If they want to pass then fine. I don’t understand all the backlash against the people wanting to try it because it’s artificially flavors and colors. What about all of you who get flavored coffee every morning? Those are artificial be you are all surviving and most likely healthy. I’m sure this is like drinking a slice of birthday cake with all the sugar so I’ll splurge and get one for myself to share with my kids while we drive to the airport this evening as my birthday treat and u can tell you we will all survive and be healthy afterwards. If you’re so against artifical color than stop wearing make up because I can tell you NONE of it has natural dyes and pigments in it, nor does your nail polish on your toxic acrylic nails. Everyone needs to stop with the holier than thou, take a break, & relax. If you want to try it fine. If you don’t fine, but all you ladies don’t need to make snide comments. Good grief people. Let’s just be nice and respectful

  47. Emily

By the way…….That Gatorade Bottle deal a few weeks back isn’t happening. They sent an email about how all orders are being cancelled unless you attended the actual event it was for. They stated this info was leaked and it wasn’t meant for general public. Just FYI

  48. Love couponing

This is what Starbucks had to say:

Fruit and vegetable juice powders are specially blended to create the pink topping. he sour blue drizzle is made from spirulina & citric acid, mixed with white chocolate mocha sauce & classic syrup. There are no artificial dyes in this beverage. All color is coming from naturally derived pigments from fruit and vegetable juices and spirulina.

    • Rebecca

Wow! You get the award for most helpful comment. I wasn’t going to log in to comment until I read yours. Thanks for the info. My daughter wants this in the worst way and now I’m much more inclined to allow her this special treat. Have a blessed day!

  49. Bambi

Can’t wait to pick my son up and go get one. He’s going to be so excited!
