Give yourself at least an hour to go pick up your card. We just did this last week and it was a disaster. The lady at customer service accused us of creating the document with the offer since she hasn’t seen one that included pie. Then she had to re-enter all of our information because “the computer messed up”. Then the card printing machine wasn’t working. When it was all said and done the free pie still wasn’t loaded on to our card so they gave us a hand written IOU. Now we have to wait in line at customer service again to get the pie when we choose to pick it up.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Oh bummer! So sorry to hear about that Andrea! That does sound frustrating! But glad you could still snag the offer! Thanks for sharing your experience!

      • Gina

I signed up trough you website and NEVER receive $20 gift card and no food was on card eather : customer service said they NEVER heard of this offer and if its no done in club they want give it to me, but fortunately manager honor my Free food but what cost my day was smashed 🙁

        • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Sorry to hear about your experience Gina. Had you received the email with the code to bring in store, after signing up?

    • Cristine

I have honestly never been impressed with their customer service. Last time I did a deal with a gift card it took forever to get my membership card too and they also treated me like I was trying to run a scam.

    • $$$$$

It’s completely insulting to be treated like you’re a scammer. I would certainly complain to someone higher up about your horrible experience.

    • Even

Same thing happened to me. It’s October and never received my promotional items. Sent an e-mail…no response. Called Customer Service…first agent disconnected me; 2nd agent had heard about the problems and transferred me to a call center that would take of it. It took a lot of explaining as the agent hadn’t heard of the problem. It took 32 minutes with this call center to get the problem resolved. And the solution: they would send me a coupon via e-mail for the $20 gift card but I am to use my card to receive the grocery items. In the past we always received coupons. Considering other people have had a problem with this during checkout, I am guessing I will be spending more time getting the promotion. So much time spent. How is it that Sam’s think they are saving me money??

  2. Marie

I did this deal. It’s so worth it for us. Getting cheap gas at Sams is easier than Costco, which has awful lines sometimes. Plus, now we can shop. In the end it only cost us $5. We’ve already gotten our chicken, rolls, and pie. (The pie did not load, but they gave us one anyway!) Plus, I joined before they special May 13 deals and got a small beverage refrigerator $40 off!!!!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Awesome! Thanks for the feedback Marie!

  3. Pat

It just shows you how desperate they are for new customers. I know a lot of people that let theirs expire cause they said it was a waste of money. They never used it enough to get their moneys worth out of it.

    • MommySpendsLess

I did this deal last year. Problem 1 – I didn’t realize the offers expired 30 days from when you purchase the membership. I thought it all activated the first time you went in like Disney passes so all of my food offers were expired and they wouldn’t honor them. The prices are good if you stick to the produce, meat and monthly specials. And if you have a large enough family to use things before they go bad and before you get tired of eating them. I used to stock up on ground beef when it was $2/lb and freeze it but either I’m making different recipes, my tastes have changed or I’m not doing as good of a job defrosting ahead of time but it just doesn’t taste the same to me anymore so my buy cheaply in bulk and freeze idea hasn’t worked out. Long story short, we won’t be renewing.

  4. Amy

I did this deal last week. When I went to get my membership card all they had were plus cards so the guy used a permanent marker to cross out the word plus. The free items never loaded to my card either but I honestly can’t be bothered to deal with the messes that work there to complain about it.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Darn! Maybe check for the offers again. They should load within 24 hours after joining. Hope this helps!

  5. Mona

The only reason I joined was to get a big reduction in car insurance renewal with Triple A.
You receive a discount of ($150.00) in my case if you were a member of Costco or Sams or any credit union. So when this Sam’s deal came up it was a no brainer. I had something of a hassle with the freebies and after a week they were still not on the card but the gift card was there right away with no fuss. I live by myself and am somewhat reluctant to try those huge boxes of frozen food in case I do not like it after tasting. I am not keen on the level of customer service at Sams and think better deals can be had by watching for sales and couponing. But this time I was lucky just in time for renewing my car insurance — so thanks again to Colin.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

You’re welcome Mona! Glad you could snag the savings on your car insurance renewal!

    • Lisa

Mona, please do tell on the AAA discount!? We’re AAA members and also Sam’s Club and were not aware of a discount. TIA

  6. MelissaB

I went yesterday to get my card from the last deal. We got the card okay and got the gift card via email, but no free items. The guy told us we had to get the number for the free stuff from the email, but the only email I got was the one with our membership number and our free gift card. Nothing has loaded onto our card either. So don’t count on the free items when redeeming this deal.

    • Jarmel

Same thing happen to me! However, they were nice enough to give me the items anyway.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Darn! The offers should be loaded within 24 hours. If you still do not have them, be sure to contact customer service for help grabbing them! 888-746-7726 Hoping you receive them soon!

    • Gina

      Yeah a VERY disappointed 🙁

  7. Kirsten Gorski

Where do we go to check if the food is loaded to our card? Is there a place online our through a phone number we can check to make sure it’s there?

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Maybe head to customer service in store Or give them a call to check 888-746-7726. Hope this helps!

  8. Jamie

I did this last wk and I’m really excited about my membership. Only the pie loaded but customer service worked it out for me. Also got a$25 gift card emailed. Not $20. Total win. Thanks!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re welcome Jamie!

  9. Alli

My free items didn’t load so I showed the hip2save deal on my phone and they just gave it all to me for free. A couple days later the pie was loaded on there but nothing else. Our customer service has always been great in Indiana.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks for sharing Alli! Glad you could still snag the offer!

  10. smarinersfan3@yahoo.com

They wouldn’t allow my husband to use this. He has never had a membership but because I have they consider him to have had one. Ridiculous! Bad customer service or false advertising.

    • Pam

Does this mean we can’t get this deal for renewing a membership?

    • Carol

I don’t necessarily think this is “bad service.” It’s a household membership because he can have a card of his own with you as the primary member. So obviously the offer wouldn’t work for your household again.

  11. Elizabeth

The best thing about Sam’s Club is their tire department will fix any flat tire (bought there or not) for free, with membership. We’ve done it twice and they were awesome about it and fast.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      How cool! Thanks for sharing!

  12. lady and the wine

I didn’t know this wasn’t for renewals 🙁 I’ve been waiting on this deal for months so I hadn’t renewed mine yet lol.

    • Kelsey Leaper

Use a different email address and you will be able to get it. We had one under my husband’s email address and I was listed as the second card holder using my personal email account. This time I used my work email address and it worked without a problem!

      • lady and the wine

Since it’s been 6 months I’ll see if I can be considered a new member. If not I’ll try this! Thanks!

    • $$$$$

If it’s been 6 months or more since expiration of membership then you would be considered a new member. Hth

      • lady and the wine

Really?! It has been 6 months! Ill have to try it out.

  13. Cristy

I got a 10 dollar rebate from both ibotta and checkout 51 from buying a membership. After the sams club 20 gift card and free food. It was a great deal.

    • Meredith

Thanks for the great tip! Can you please explain how you managed this? I have a code from SAMs to receive the special coupons, a different code to use for ibotta and a third one to use for checkout 51. Were you able to use all three?

      • Cristy

I only used the code for the sams club membership. The offer I was emailed. For Ibotta and checkout 51 I submitted a copy of the receipt showing I bought the membership.

        • Courtney

Did you do this in store? Did they allow you to use more than one code while signing up for the membership?

    • Nicole

Cristy, I don’t see the ibotta rebate. Could you tell me where did you find it? Thanks

      • Cristy

I submitted my rebate last week for Ibotta. I am not findiing it now so I think it was removed. The checkout 51 is still up.

      • Happymama

I didn’t see it either, but I just typed it in at the top and found it that way. Mine expires 5/17/17 HTH! Also… it looks like if you submit at checkout 51 this week, you unlock a $10 offer when you spend $10 or more next week! I’m tempted lol

        • Katie

My Ibotta says you have to purchase the membership in store and not online to get the rebate 😕 DARNIT im an hour from the nearest club me won’t be able to get there before the rebate is over

    • Liz

Crissy, thanks for the tip…After reading your comment, i took and chance and got a membership at 11am…got my $20 GC from Sams…then submitted for both Ibotta and CO51 and i got the $10 from both places…this is a better than free deal if you take the food vouchers under consideration!!

      • Courtney

Did you do it online or does the receipt you submit have to be from the store?

        • Liz

In store receipt of the membership fees.

          • courtney

Thank you for the info. Did you have to give them the codes from Ibotta & checkout51 at sam’s club when you signed up for the membership?

    • Meredith

Thank you so much! I did it just as you said and it totally worked! So basically $5 for the membership, plus all those coupons for free items (or a money maker if you were going to buy those items anyway).

  14. Kathy

Can someone please tell me if I can allow my current membership to expire and then do this deal? My membership is set to automatically renew on May 23rd. Could I cancel my automatic renewal and then sign up for this deal?

    • Kirsten Gorski

My membership just expired. I had a card and my husband was the secondary. I signed up through this and used a different email address and used my husband’s name and put me as the secondary. It worked just fine and I was able to get my card fine. I have yet to try to get my free food yet though. Hope that helps.

    • Sam

Kathy, you can’t sign up for a new membership right after your current one expires. They consider that renewing. You have to wait 6 months before applying as a “new” member. It’s in the fine print as I’ve had to apply this process myself over the years. I usually wait for these gc/free-food sign-up deals before reapplying since I’m already a Costco member & shop more there.

    • $$$$$

Cancel and sign up with new email to ensure no problems. Good luck.

  15. VIcky

Awesome! We just recently got Costco membership and I hate it! Really! 99% of their prepared food has peanut warning (not so great when you have a peanut allergy) and second of all, I hate that every week I go to Costco? their stuff changes location. Wasting so much time to find the products over and over again. Sam’s meat is cheaper and they carry more stuff we purchase.

  16. Val

We’ve done deals like this for the last several years. It is always a hassle when we go in to get the membership as the customer service people are never sure how to handle these. Even though there are instructions for them on the paperwork. It takes an hour every time. We know that and so now we plan that trip accordingly. We don’t plan to go when we are in a hurry. In the end it’s still worth it. The last two times we did it, it was with Plus memberships. We’ve earned $50 back with those which help. We’ll be doing this one as well since our membership expires this month. My husband is primary currently, so when we go in, I will then be primary to make it work.

  17. Dawn

I have done this when I signed up and to renew and has always been a pleasant experience. Customer service did need to wait for an override last time and someone was not there instantly but that was all.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Oh good! Thanks for the feedback Dawn!

  18. Erin

For those of you that haven’t received the free food offers: I signed up with this offer on Saturday and only the apple pie has loaded to my card so far. I called customer service and they told me it could take up to 3-5 days for all the free offers to load.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks for sharing your experience Erin! Good to know!

  19. Tammy Bandemier

My sister and I did this about 3 weeks ago and we got our cards but the $20 card and food we never got.

  20. Shannon

Do you know when this promotion started? I just renewed on May 1st!

  21. Ashley

I did this when the deal was a couple weeks ago. Except, I got a $25e-gift card and only the Apple pie. Lady at customer service had no idea about the advertised deal. Kinda bummed because I prob wouldn’t have gotten membership for the deal I got, I don’t go to Sam’s but maybe a couple times a year and the $5 membership would have been worth it. Oh well

  22. Debra Lynn Fain

Signed up for this offer yesterday online. I got a $25 (not $20) gift card via my email address that I used for the membership. The chicken, rolls and pie loaded on my card this morning. Went into Sam’s and sat down and had lunch with my family until the customer service line went down. Went over and got my physical card but you really don’t even need to because you can use the one on the Sam’s Club app with your virtual card . You can now scan your groceries on the Scan and Go Sam’s app (Who knew about this? This is the best thing ever invented) You just scan your groceries as you go or go sit in the snack area and rest while you scan them all. Load your credit card and pay, the receipt loads on the app. You just show them the bar code on your phone at the door. They will scan it with a hand held and your receipt comes up on their screen and then they look over your cart to just like normal. ZERO waiting in lines to check out. This was flawless for me!!

  23. Lee

If I press the renew now button, would I get the gift card and food also? It has been more then 6 months since my membership expired. Thanks for any help on this.

    • Rebecca

Lee, did you try this? Mine has been more than 6 months since it expired as well. Thanks for any feedback you can give!

      • Lee

Rebecca, I ended up doing the deal in the store and it worked out great. No problems!

        • Rebecca

Thanks! I am headed to sam’s now to give it a try.

  24. Heidi

How did you guys do the Checkout 51 offer as well? If I sign up online like I am planning on, I don’t see anywhere to enter the code that Checkout 51 wants me to enter. Thanks!

  25. Michelle

I bought my membership online yesterday and went into the store today to get my cards. I brought the print out with my membership number, so I got the card. But I did not get $20 at the store or in an email. Also the coupons for the free chicken etc did not load and customer service was not helpful claiming not to know about the deal.

    • Michelle

I joined May 27. I called customer service yesterday morning and was told he would send me a $25 e-gift card within the hour. It is 4pm today and I still do not have the email gift card or the other food items loaded onto my account. I called customer service again and she said that the guy yesterday must have been new because he didn’t do anything to fix this. She said I will get $20 not $25 later today and the foods will be loaded by a different department in a day. This is turning into a hassle.

  26. Lee

Thanks for this Sam’s deal. I got it several days ago. I got everything as you stated plus free 12ct. crossants and $0.08 for 3 lbs. of bananas.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

That’s awesome to hear Lee! You’re most welcome!

  27. Brandi

Hi! I see where it says it’s been updated to June 11th… I’m here now at Sams and they won’t honor it.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Oh darn! Are you able to click through the link and scroll down to the fine print where it lists the offer details, good through the 11th? Maybe show them the details. Hope this helps!

  28. Tina

I’m at Sam’s Club now and they are telling me they’ve never heard of this deal and that it has to be expired!!!!!! I’m standing my ground as the last time I did one of these I never received any extras!!! Theses are not regluated by Sam’s!!!! Avoid!!!
