Sent from reader, Emily:

I just wanted to share something I’ve found to be very valuable to me. Two years ago, I got a tablet for each of my 3 older kids. Within a month, the price went down by $20. I called my credit card company, sent proof and received a check for over $60!

One and a half years later my son’s tablet failed to work anymore. It only had a 1 year warranty, but my credit card company extends the manufacturer’s warranty by 1 year. I called them again and sent in the paperwork and received a check for the full purchase price (around $130-more than enough to buy him a better tablet)!

For Christmas, the other two kids wanted one just like his so I ordered 2 more. The price went down by $35, so I started a new claim and received a check for $70! My card is a Chase freedom Visa. It offers price protection and extended warranty protection.

These have been great benefits for us, so I thought I’d mention it! Thanks for your website and I just hope this story can help others.

I think Usaa does this too! There are so many benefits that cards offer that its just impossible to keep up with and remember to take advantage of. Think of all the lost dollars! Great post, Thank you!

  2. Maria

I work for Discover and they do this too! Also return guarantee if the merchant won’t take your return!

    • Cambria

I forgot about the return guarantee!! That is awesome!!

  5. Becky

Thank you so much for the info. We have Both Chase Freedom and Discover and I had no idea they did this!

My Citicard does what they call price rewind. If they find a lower price of an item I bought, they will credit my account. I have done it on many items and have saved a lot of money.

    • Nl

I’ve heard of this but how do we do it?

  7. Laura

Whaaaaaatttt??!!! I had no idea and I have chase freedom. Thanks!!!

  9. Nicole

Amex Blue does the same for ANY purchase from ANY retailer. After the manufacturers warranty is up, Amex covers an additional year for free. If it breaks they refund 100% of the original purchase price.

About three years ago our one-year plus one-month-old Garmin quit while we were on vacation. We purchased it with our Discover Card and I tried to take advantage of their extended warranty. They wanted proof of purchase (it was purchased with our Discover Card for heaven’s sake) plus they wanted us to send the item to them in the original packaging. (Who has room to keep the packaging from all their purchases?) In addition, they didn’t want to send anything to our hotel, just our home address. It was very frustrating and, since we were on vacation and needed the Garmin, we just ended up buying a new one ourselves. I hope Discover has changed their policies since then because they certainly weren’t helpful as far as we were concerned.

I had no idea and been using our freedom card for years! Thanks for the heads up!

Who do I contact from the credit card company

    • Emily

Just contact customer service and they can answer questions and guide you through the process.

  14. Elaine

I have both also. How would you go about starting a claim like this? What proof do you send in? Etc… TIA!

    • Anna

You just google the credit card and benefits and it will pop up- I just googled chase freedom benefits and a PDF popped up with all the info

  15. Yar

Great information! I was not aware of these benefits offered by a credit card! I guess I need to be more educated on was available when using a credit card! Thank you so much!

  16. Julie

I have this exact card and didn’t know that!! Thanks!!!

Does anyone know if this works with airline purchases???

    • Terry

If you mean does it cover the purchase of an airline ticket whose price goes down prior to the departure date, the answer is no. Every credit card price protection policy I’m aware of excludes the purchase of tickets of any kind. And they all exclude motorized vehicles and the equipment/accessories that go on them.

Many cards also have built in “insurance” like benefits for rental cars and travel! No additional cost when the credit card is used to purchase these services. It is nice to know that nonrefundable vacation costs would be reimbursed if something like inclement weather, sickness, or a death in the family would interrupt our travel plans.

Thanks so much for sharing! Had no idea about this….I am definitely going to keep receipts and packaging for pricier purchases and look for price drops!

  20. Sundi

Almost every credit card offers the 1year warranty extension

I am hoping someone could give me some advice. I’m looking to go on a cruise with my family.. I have never gone on one but I need airline tickets from mass to Florida and then passports as well as we will be going on the carnival cruise …I’m trying to be as frugal as I can. So I’m asking help if anyone know the best way to purchase this all. I do have an American Express card that will give me 100 back after I boom using that card but perhaps people know other saving tips I can use to plan my trip. Every dollar helps:) thanks for reading and I hope someone has some knowledge to share

    • Amy

Make sure to read the fine print on your cruise or contact the cruise line but since you are departing from US and returning to US you may not need passports. My husband and I found this out on our cruises, the only downside was we wanted to take ferry from US Virgin Islands to British Virgin Islands on a day we were in Port and could not do because we didn’t have our passports on us.

      • Niki

Thanks Amy!!! I’ll double check. It’s from Florida to Aruba and back.. I was told I needed a passport

  22. Cindy

We had a situation where we paid more than $600 using our BOA card for ac repair for our car that was totaled the following month. Had not even been billed for the charge. They did not offer any kind of reimbursement. And insurance did not include that cost in our proceeds.. So it was lost money.

  23. cindy

Thank you for sharing! This is great info to keep in mind. It pays to keep track of the details!

  24. Laura

    Very cool!

  25. Ma

THANKS!!! I forgot about this and the 1yr warranty has ran out on my fridge!!!!!! THANKS, again!
