Fifty miles is not much so as someone who has never had cable and always had an antenna I would recommend looking at spending more money and installing an outside antenna.
It depends on where you live in relation to the source of the broadcasts. I wouldn’t pick up any more with a 200 mile antenna than a 20 mile antenna, but if you live in a rural area you may not pick up anything at all with this.

You need one antenna per tv.
You can get one antenna and buy a splitter. That way you can use it for more than one TV!
It depends on how your house is wired and the strength of the signal. As Jenny said, a splitter could allow you to split it off to multiple televisions provided you have the wiring to do so, but you would not have an HD signal and would need a strong signal as splitters, additional wiring, etc. weaken the signal.
We have one antenna and use it for two TVs. And we get HD channels…..
If you split the coax out of the antenna and thus connect the coax to your television, you are not getting an HD picture regardless of whether you can see the HD channel. There’s a digital tuner in the antenna box that decompresses the OTA HD broadcast and allows the box to then output an HD picture – but only over wiring that can handle a decompressed HD signal – RG6 coaxial cable is not capable of handling a decompressed HD signal so it is then downgraded to an SD signals using a coax to the tv. If you are connecting your antenna, cable box, or pretty much anything else to a television via a coaxial cable, you are not viewing an HD quality picture regardless of whether the antenna, cable box, etc. are HD capable.
This is the antenna we use in our cabin basically in the woods. I believe it is CBS we don’t get very well at all but we get the other available channels fairly well.

My mom lives in the country where she couldn’t get cable. She uses an antenna and is able to pick up signals from pretty far. I think she has about 50 channels, some of them repeats of the same network from different stations, but pretty amazing considering it’s free!

Does anyone know if you get HGTV with this usually? This is one of the main reasons we keep the cable so would be nice if I could use this for it.
HGTV is a cable station – I doubt it is available over the air.
