We finally cut the cable cord and bought a firestick. Best money saving decision ever. We went from a $180 a month cable and wifi bill to $74 a month for just wifi. We found our kids were watching a lot of netflick and we weren’t watching much tv. This has everything you will need. You won’t have live tv but how many of us don’t DVR so it works with our own schedules? And there are many news apps to get the news. It’s a much cheaper alternative I do believe. You need to have Amazon prime for this to work best but we have our prime account on three fireticks and everything is fine.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks so much for your helpful feedback Heather!

    • DeShelle Harris

      Hi Heather,
You can download an apk to your fire stick called Mobdro. It has live streams of TV. Get the downloaded and enter http://MOBDRO.TO
      Hope this is helpful

      • Stevie78

        Thank you!!!

  2. Julie

How do you access Disney with this? It’s our only apprehension to cutting the cord. Also how fast do shows like greys anatomy show up on Hulu from when they appear on tv for the first time?

    • Nicole

On Hulu greys is the next day after airing.

Get sling tv / or Hulu live they have nick jr , sprout , can’t remember Disney for sure.

    • Heather

We don’t actually watch Disney b/c my kids are older. We get some of the disney movies through Netflix. I did read that Disney was going to start their own server, probably at a price.

    • Sarah

That’s our problem too coz both of our kids watch only Disney Channel.

    • Ty

About a year ago we go the fire tv box and it did not have Disney jr on it. We actually returned it. Not sure they have added it yet.
We have an Apple TV and are able to watch Disney jr. But to watch the most current episodes you would need to have a cable provider log in.

    • JaxJay😎

Yes you can install the *downloader* app in the Amazon app store, then in device settings allow debugging and unknown sources then open downloader type Google in the downloader browser search for *Mobdro* download and install the APK and you’ll have Disney, nick, cartoon Network, and about 150 other live free channels. Nothing to sign up for or pay for. You can install Kodi or terrarium tv or other apps for every TV show and movie. Best to watch tutorials on YouTube. I still pay for cable at a rate I negotiated ( about $40 less a month than advertised) but the other things are fun to good around with. If you’re a prime member you’ll have plenty of content on the stick. Kodi *No limits* Firestick lite build is the best build I’ve installed so far haha down, better than guru. Good luck all have and fun get outside!!!

    • Sarah

I use the sling tv app it has a lot if great channels on it, Disney cartoon network and nick jr etc. They also have different levels you can get and additional packages you can order. Check out their website for a list of channels included.

    • barbara

Hi I just got sling an love it. I had it a few years ago and did not like it but things have changed and it is a much better service. you are able to ad disney to sling. I am getting so many more channels than I did before. We got an antena for the local news. $17 on amazon. our cable bill with sing and pay chanels is $85

  3. nancy

I have it too and love it. You can speak to alexa to ask for the weather and news. Its great. You can watch movies listen to music if you have amazon prime.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Awesome! Thanks for sharing Nancy!

  4. Mandy

Can anyone recommend a good antenna and what are you using for sports? We need football and basketball:)

    • Happymama

I’d like to know as well.

    • Lo

We use ESPN app for ABC games, PlayStation vue ( pay for it like Hulu/Netflix ). Fox sports app which is included with our ps vue subscription. If you know someone with cable, you can use their info for the apps that require cable like HBOgo.
You could also jailbreak your fire stick ( YouTube) or pay/ find someone to do it for you.
My fil likes being able to use the mic.

    • Mom2

@mandy for sports and most everything else I have direct tv now and love it. You’ll need to get an upgraded package to get Comcast sports network Found out about it here on Hip2Save. I do have Kodi installed on my fire stick and I have a flat leaf antenna I purchased from Amazon works well here in the Chicago area but the CBS station is at 48.2

      • JA

This is exactly what we have. And for $35 bucks a month we can watch absolutely anything we want. My only wish would be from them to carry the regional sports for my area but that is where the Kodi comes in. Its not always perfect but the price is right.😜

  5. Kathryn

Have this and love it. I’m ordering another. We are turning in our cable box today and saving $75 a month.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Awesome!

  6. Imsofrugal

I cut the cord as well. Going from $180 as someone posted earlier to now $74. I pay $30 for internet, $9 Netflix and $35 for direct tv now (which has nothing to do with direct tv) It is similar to sling tv. I have Kodi installed on my firestick, so whatever I can’t watch on Netflix or YouTube, I will watch on Kodi. It has lots of tv shows & movies for kids as well as adults. There’s also sports.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

How cool! Thanks for sharing your experience!

  7. Amy

TY! Been meaning to get one and this price was reasonable enough for me not to wait for Black Friday or similar.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re so welcome Amy!

    • Lo

Black Friday price was 29.99$ so not far off.

  8. Hilary

If you watch some YouTube videos, and know what this thing is capable of, you’ll be able to access every channel, show, and movie. Not to mention live TV and sports. Look up “Michanga” on YouTube and follow her tutorials. It’s amazing! I also use PrivateVPN. Have fun!

      • Imsofrugal

I agree with you. She is the best!! I’m always changing my builds. In fact, I changed builds about 9 this morning and I just checked about 11:15 pm and she’s uploaded a new one. So, once again I will be changing in the morning.

        • Hilary

I saw that! Haha! I’m going to upgrade Kodi today and the new build. Bet she has a new one right after I do it.

  9. Ladonna

OK so we have a Roku’s in our house we recently had one that stopped working and we need to replace it does this do the exact same thing that Roku does? Or is this only if you have like an Amazon prime account?

    • Jennifer (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Hi Ladonna! You will set it up through an Amazon account, but you do NOT need Prime to use it. It’s very much like the Roku and would be a nice replacement.

    • Flmomof2

I have both and for overall use I prefer my roku, but the firesticks are able to have kodi added on. That’s the only true difference that I’ve noticed.

  10. Susan Crawford

We have the Fire tv stick with Prime and an $10.00 antenna. This covers out tv watching fine. With Prime we will get all the NFL games on Thursdays, no cable needed. I can’t afford to add on anything with Prime so we have enough to watch now that we are heading into fall, winter. Definitely love the Fire tv stick.

  11. rachael

    How much is this originally?

    • pokz

      $39..haha

  12. Debbie Skipper

    Hi Collin,
Love your flamingo slippers. Where did you get them? Thanks for all you help and insight. I have been a fan for a long, long time. Keep up the good work.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks for the sweet feedback! You’re SO welcome! These are not my slippers as this is not me in the photo! But, they are SUPER cute! 😉

  13. ResseCup

Haven’t had cable in about 8 years. Cut the cord and use to subscribe to Blockbuster by mail. Got two Roku I boxes and two chromecasts. Fast forward to today, I have a jail broken firestick and I LOVE IT. Can watch everything I want that’s on cable. I have subs to Netflix, Hulu and use my friend’s prime account.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Awesome! Thanks for sharing!

  14. Amy

I’d rather have your flamingo slippers!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Lol! They are SO cute! However, these are not my slippers 😉

    • Amanda

Just Google flamingos slippers, lots of options come up, the same one appear to be on Amazon for $26.

  15. Caitlin

Collin! Catastrophe is by far my favorite Amazon show!! Hahah so hilarious!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Glad to hear how much you have enjoyed that one! Thanks for sharing Caitlin!

  16. Sue

I’m really thinking about getting this but would miss my local TV stations How do you go about getting the local stations?

    • Amanda

We get local stations included with our internet package via Comcast.

    • Me

I use an antenna ( the flat kind) and am able to pick up cbs, nbc, abc, PBS and a bunch of randoms ( ion, me tv).

  17. Kerry

Hi. I have one for a while now. My issue is that it’s now overheating. Anyone else has this problem and how did they remedy this? Thanks for the help.

    • barbara

try using it with the extender

  18. Debbie

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Sweet! You’re so welcome Debbie!

  19. Shannon

My husband and I want to cut the cord and are thinking about trying this, but there are two things we want, I want the Bravo channel and husband wants DVR. Are these possible with the Fire Stick?

  20. Katelynne8504

If you buy the Amazon Fire Stick do you really need to buy the protection plan for it? I was wanting to know if it’s wroth it or not. If anyone could tell me. Thanks.

  21. Kim

Question. What is a jail broken fire stick compared to one that isn’t?

    • Lo

Modified / put a build on it so you have kodi which allows you to watch anything for free. Look at the YouTube posted above.
Regular right out the box fire stick has Amazon on it but you have to add apps

  22. Denise

    Is Kodi legal?

    • AnnieL.

      Wondering the same thing?

  23. Joy

Can you cast from your laptop/smartphone/pc/tablet with this device like you can with chromecast?

  24. AnnieL.

This sounds like a good deal but I’d never be able to part with my TV provider Lol. I’m not a techie person, about the only downloading I do is coupons. Dont judge me lol…im not even a big texter!! So having someone set everything up for me (DirecTV man or cable guy) is worth the $90 a month cost. Just turn it on and go. Even when a family member moved they did everything free installed. Maybe that’s just me but I don’t wanna mess with alot of stuff. And a tip I have is TV provider’s will negotiate price if you tell them you are getting rid of it.

  25. Cindy

Has anyone tried to order more than one!? It won’t let me, and I was hoping to get one for my college daughter’s birthday!??

  26. jtravereus

    I’m loving my firestick tv
