I just want to say don’t use nix! Use fairy tale products! Nix doesn’t work and the chemicals are awful.

    • Susan

Agreed. Fairytale products are excellent. Trader Joe’s Tea Tree Tingle also repels them nicely. I was using it on my youngest due to his sensitive scalp and he’s the only one in the household who didn’t end up with lice (3 years ago) (and we cuddled all the time). Also, lice are becoming immune to the chemicals.

Use tea tree or peppermint oil in your shampoo to try to repel them.

    • Kathleen

I agree, tea tree shampoo will take of lice without the nasty chemicals!

    • Jo28p

      Yes this works well too!

Does anyone know where you can buy lice treatment in bulk? The counselors at our local schools are always asking for lice treatment donations for underprivileged families. But, the stuff is so expensive to buy individually. 🙁

We had a large family growing up, so it was an expensive ordeal when us kids wound up with lice, my mom bought a big jug of dog flea and lice shampoo, it was cheaper and there was enough to use on all of us kids

I am sorry but that seems dangerous, I got them once when I was pregnant and I was recommended by the doctor to basically smother them with olive oil I wore it in my hair for about 24 hours and washed/sanitized everything and it worked.

Tea tree oil is a great, cheap, and natural alternative. It prevents lice and helps get rid of them. Saturate hair with a mixture of 2 T. of coconut oil and a few drops of tea tree oil. Double mixture if you’ve more hair. If you have lice, this will slow them down. Comb it all out. Use a coconut conditioning spray mixed with tea tree oil daily and you’ll be lice free for good!

The lice in this area at least (Rhode island) are completely resistant to all of the treatments available even prescription strength. They’re called super lice. I agree with above posters tea tree oil and coconut oil are the best remedies, you have to suffocate them by wearing a shower cap and your head covered in oil every night for at least a week and then every other night for another week. You do not, I repeat do NOT need to treat any of your belongings in your home, not pillows, not blankets, nothing, you just need to treat everyone’s head!

You can use mayonnaise as well real mayo not miracle whip it will suffocate them. Plus it’s not going to hurt you like harsh chemicals in Nix.

Well 2nd week of school and my kids come home with lice😨 so my question is when u put the mayo or oil in the hair what do u wash it with so it don’t look greasy

    • Mari

Dawn dishsoap, just a bit will cut the oiliness

Cetaphil is another non toxic option that smothers them…in p.m. apply liberally all over head, blow dry hair w/it still on there (takes 4ever), then wash out w/reg shampoo in a.m. Repeat 1 week later.
