Want to avoid five o’clock traffic, save money on gasoline or car repairs, be able to work just about anywhere, have the freedom to make your own schedule AND earn a little extra income? Here are 17 legit ways you can earn money working from home, all while lounging in your pajamas on the sofa… 🛋

1.) Share Your Knowledge

VIPKID.com is looking for teachers who are high-energy, great with children, and motivated to work with a promising company that is growing at a fast pace in China. Qualified teachers will be able to work 7.5+ hours per week teaching English to young students online and will make between $14-$22/hour. Note that a bachelor’s degree in any field AND 1 school year of traditional teaching experience or the equivalent in mentoring, tutoring, or alternative education is required.

Or, if you love your field and want to share your knowledge all while working from home and earning extra money, you’ll love being an online tutor with Tutor.com. You can help students of all ages—from K-12 to college to adult learners—gain a better understanding of your favorite subjects, while keeping your skills sharp. Plus, there are no fees or costs associated with applying to become a tutor!

2.) Become a Mystery Shopper

It’s important to know that you won’t make a lot of money being a mystery shopper, but you can earn some extra cash or just complete shops in exchange for free meals, merchandise or entertainment.

Mystery shopping is used by companies to measure quality of service or to gather specific information about products and services. Mystery shoppers perform specific tasks such as purchasing a product, asking questions, registering complaints or behaving in a certain way, and then provide detailed reports or feedback about their experiences. In exchange, you’ll get paid a fee and/or reimbursement.

There are a lot of mystery shopping scams out there, so it’s important to make sure any mystery shopping company you’re applying for is part of the Mystery Shopping Providers Association (MSPA). Legitimate mystery shopping firms never ask for money from a shopper; they are the ones paying you.

A few notable mystery shopping companies:

3.) Submit Those Grocery Receipts

Did you know that you can earn cash from various grocery apps just by purchasing products that you are planning to buy anyways, including products that you may be able to score completely FREE or cheap after coupons?! Below are a few of my favorite money-saving apps that will allow you to earn cash back just for buying products at the grocery store…

  • Ibotta – You can unlock offers by completing various tasks, such as learning a fact or watching a short video. Then, search for offers in-store by scanning the barcode of items that are in your shopping cart. After making a purchase, you can submit a rebate by tapping on “redeem” for eligible items purchased. Then scan the product bar code and submit a picture of your receipt.
  • Checkout 51 – Browse through the different offers available and buy items from the limited-time ‘Offer List’ at ANY store. Upload a photo of your entire receipt using the app or website and when your account reaches $20, you can cash out and they’ll mail you a check. Note that offers go live on Thursdays and they expire the following Wednesday.
  • MobiSave – Earn cash back whenever you purchase qualifying goods at ANY store that gives you an itemized receipt. There are no inactivity fees and no minimum payout required. Plus, you’ll get paid within 24 hours straight into your PayPal account.
  • SavingStar – Earn cash back when you shop at your local grocery store – with nothing to clip or print. You can redeem their grocery offers by linking them to your supermarket and drugstore loyalty cards or by submitting a picture of your receipt. In addition to cashing out your earnings to your bank account, PayPal, or Upromise account, you can also score a gift card for Starbucks, iTunes, or AMC Theatres.

4.) Work for the Disney Store

If you live in Texas, Georgia, Nevada, Florida or North Carolina and are looking for work you can do from home, check out the Work From Home Guest Service positions available for the Disney Store. These jobs involve answering inbound calls and emails assisting guests, contacting guests via outbound call, escalating issues to appropriate supervisors/management and more.

In order to apply, you must have excellent communication skills and have a reliable, high-speed internet connection. Shifts are varied and may include evenings, holidays and weekends.

5.) Take Online Surveys

Enjoy sharing your opinions? Although online surveys are not a huge source of revenue, they add up over time and are easy to do while watching TV, sitting at the hair salon, waiting in the carpool line, or even at the airport. Most companies will pay via check, PayPal, or you can submit for a reward by mail after you’ve accumulated enough points to cash out. My top 5 survey companies are –

6.) Be an Amazon Mechanical Turk

Did you know that you can become a Mechanical Turk for Amazon and earn money from home just for reading articles, completing tasks, and more? After signing up, just search or browse through the Human Intelligence Tasks (HITs) and click on the one that interests you.

Accept the HIT and follow the instructions. When you’re done, submit your work and after the requester approves your work, money is deposited into your Amazon Payments account.

7.) Get Paid for Your Books, CD’s, Movies & More

Do you have books, electronics, CDs, DVDs, games or even LEGOs laying around? If so, you can get paid for these items by selling them on Decluttr. Just enter the barcode on your items into their valuation engine (also available via their mobile app) and they’ll give you an instant offer!

If you’re selling books and textbooks, you can use BookScouter to help you sell your textbooks and used books for the most money by comparing offers from over 35 book buyback vendors with a single search. Plus, you can ship your books back for free and find out what vendor will pay you the most.

8.) Sell Your Gently Used Clothing

If you or a family member has a closet filled with clothing they don’t wear, consider packing up a box and selling it online via thredUP.com. Start by ordering a free Clean Out Kit, pack it full of styles you’ve loved, and return it to them for free. They will inspect the clothing and determine an amount to pay you. The amount you’re paid depends on the original price, brand and category of each item. You can use their Earnings Estimator to see how much others have earned for similar items.

Another site that allows you to sell your gently-used clothing is Tradesy. Just list any item from your closet that’s in good condition, snap a few photos, propose a price, and use the free shipping kit you’ll receive when your items ships. Then just print a label and ship it without ever leaving your house.

9.) Earn Money for Watching TV

Watch TV? Viggle is a mobile app (iOS or Android) that offers rewards simply for checking into your favorite shows/movies on your TV or by streaming. After you’ve checked into your TV program, watch for the 4X, 6X, or 10X Bonus Perk Point Badges in the app to earn extra “Perk Points” that can be redeemed for over 800+ Gift Card options, prizes, or even a prepaid debit card. You can also earn even more Perk Points by playing along with Viggle LIVE or participating in Quests and Streaks.

10.) Sell Your Smartphone Photos

Have a knack for photography? If you have a smartphone and often take photos, there’s an app called Foap that allows you to sell your smartphone photos for CASH. To get started, download the free Foap app (available on Google Play or iTunes App Store), upload your photos, and make them available for purchase on the Foap Market. Often companies prefer to purchase images on Foap as they can be much cheaper than buying from professionals.

For each photo you sell, you make $5 and you can sell the same photo an unlimited number of times. Now, this isn’t a huge source of income BUT think about it…if your photo sells 10 times, you make $5 each time and will end up with $50 in your pocket. Sweet!

11.) Flaunt Your Skills on Fiverr

If you have a certain skill (such as artist, video editor, designer or musician), you can sell your skills on Fiverr and get paid. You just sign up for free, set up your Gig, and offer your work to their global audience. There is absolutely no subscription required and no fees to pay to list your services!

You’ll get notified when you get an order and will use their system to discuss details with customers. Payment is transferred to you upon order completion and you keep 80% of each transaction.

12.) Sign Up to Be a Slogan Writer

If you thrive off of being creative and enjoy writing, consider coming up with catchy slogans and getting paid! Sometimes companies need new corporate taglines, advertising slogans and jingles, so they may collect submissions from freelance writers or run contests that anyone can enter. A few sites where you can apply to be a slogan writer are Slogan Slinger, Get A Slogan, or even Freelancer.

13.) Become a Customer Service Agent

A growing work-from-home opportunity is to answer inbound customer calls for large companies like 1-800 Flowers, J Crew, or Walgreens. How is this possible? These companies (and many others) outsource their customer-service calls to companies that hire U.S. based virtual agents, such as Alpine Access, ACD Direct, LiveOps, Sutherland Global Services, Arise, Asurion, TeleTech, and many others.

Before considering this type of opportunity, keep in mind that you must have high-speed Internet access, a computer, a landline, and a quiet place to work. You can expect to make an average of $8 and $15 an hour depending on your experience and will work a minimum of 15 to 20 hours per week.

You can find even more at-home customer service jobs (along with remote work options in 50 other job categories) on FlexJobs. Go here to check it out.

14.) Sell Your Junk Mail

Do you receive a lot of junk mail in your inbox or mailbox that just goes into the trash? If so, you may want to check out the Small Business Knowledge Center (also known as SBKC and rated A+ with the BBB!) as they will PAY YOU for your junk mail! Plus, if you are a business owner or are self-employed, you will earn bonus points for the materials you send which means you’ll get rewarded sooner!

As a SBKC Consumer Panelist, you’ll be asked to regularly send them your emails and junk mail related to insurance, investments, banking, mortgage, credit cards, leisure, and more. Just forward all of your qualifying emails and/or place your direct junk mail in the postage-paid envelopes they provide and return to them about once a week. How quickly will you earn money? According to SBKC,

Frequent participants can earn as much as $20 in points every 6 to 10 weeks! Business owners & those who are self-employed can earn rewards even faster.

Head on over here to sign up and for more details.

15.) Start Your Own Business

Interested in starting your own business? Become a company rep for brands such as Amway, Avon, Barefoot Books, CutcoLipSense, Mary Kay, Pampered Chef, Scentsy, Thirty-One Gifts, or Young Living Essential Oils just to name a few. Each company offers different pay schedules, referral systems, and has different training requirements, so be sure to check out the ones you’re interested in.

16.) Evaluate Search Engine Content

Whenever you browse the internet using a search engine (such as Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.) OR whenever you interact on social media, you may not always get effective and relevant results. That’s why real humans are needed to look at the results and judge them for quality, relevance, usefulness and also for ways to make internet search more exciting for all end users in the U.S.

And, the best part is you can get paid anywhere between $12-$15 per hour just for becoming a ‘Search Engine Evaluator’ or ‘Social Media Content Evaluator’ for companies such as Lionbridge, Appen, or Leapforce (keep in mind that you will work as an independent contractor, not an employee).

17.) Browse the Web & Play Games

If you spend a lot of time behind your computer anyway, you may consider using Swagbucks to earn a little extra income. Swagbucks is a site where you can earn points called “SB” for performing basic tasks like browsing the web AND even for playing games, taking surveys, or watching videos.

Your SB’s can be redeemed for rewards like Amazon, Starbucks, PayPal or Target gift cards (in $5 increments). In addition to earning money by doing tasks, you can earn by registering Swagbucks as your primary search engine. Every time you search using the Swagbucks search bar, you’ll earn more! Some users report that they can earn between $50-100 a month, so it can definitely add up!

If you would like more info on how to start your own Macaroni Kid email newsletter in your town you can reach me at sarahs@macaronkid.com

    • Becky

I went to their website and I sort of get it, but how do you make money?

      • Sarah Macaroni

You make money by selling advertising on your site to local business. For example, preschools, gymnastics, bakery, pizza place, etc. You keep 100% of what you sell! sarahs@macaronikid.com

  4. Megan

I’ve tried a least half of these, and the biggest return was from starting my own business via direct sales. If you’re willing to work hard, there’s definitely something out there for you. πŸ™‚

  5. Lo

Thanks for this informative article! Just an FYI — you don’t earn Swagbucks every single time you use the search bar. They are awarded randomly.

    • Mary

How do you use swagbucks as your search engine??
Please explain the easiest way you do this. Thanks πŸ™‚

With best mark, if you own a. Chevrolet,GM, or dodge you can get free oil changes AND get paid to have them done. I just got back from my oil change today, it also paid me $20 for the shop.

Thanks Clifton! I just used your link to sign up! Pefect timing since I need an oil change.

      • Autumn

        Sounds fishy.

        • JenB

It’s not fishy – it’s a secret shopper program. They are paying people the cost of the service that they want a review for. Clifton could have easily gone to Jiffy Lube instead. And then they pay extra money for Clifton’s time in doing the review.

          • Mamma O

I’m also a Bestmark secret shopper – nothing fishy! I’ve done many shops with them, for quite a few years now!

  7. Geo

Interested to hear anyone’s experience with SBKC. We get so much junk mail…

  8. Diana M

I definitely agree that owning your own business via direct sales is an amazing way to go. I sell the ONLY direct sales haircare line which currently has $300 Million in sales and is are estimated to be 25% of premium haircare in 2018. The best part is there are ONLY have 35,000 active Market Partners. Anything under 100,000 is an amazing opportunity! Just think of all the original Avon ladies!!!

    • hilly

I’m interested in doing this what’s the name Diana

      • Lindsay

        Maybe Monat?

      • Katelynn

It’s got to be Monat! And it’s an amazing product!

  9. Fin Moore

I’ve had great luck selling clothes on poshmark and Mercari! It’s super easy !

    • Mary (Stellar Sidekick)

Oh awesome – glad to hear that Fin!

    • Autumn

      This is true!

    • Wendy Milam

…nice to hear, I am currently selling through ebay and by the time I pay for shipping, fees from PayPal and Ebay, it’s barely worth it…

    • Bobby

is mint vine good like pinecone ?

      • Diana

Mintvine is 2nd on my list to Pinecone. The thing I like about it is that you don’t have to waste your time just to find out you don’t qualify. It is usually 1 or 2 questions and you still get rewarded even if you don’t qualify. Payout isn’t as high as Pinecone, but the experience is a lot better than others I have tried.

  10. Sierra

    Thank you Mary!!

    • Mary (Stellar Sidekick)

You are so welcome Sierra! πŸ™‚

  11. Jessica Guzman

Great Post! I’ve tried a lot of these and some really work well. I know that direct sales with Avon has worked for the best for me being a stay at home mom. It is great that I get to make my own schedule and work harder sales when I need the cash! You just gotta find the right company that works for you with stuff you truly like. Here’s my link if anyone is interested in trying it out.

  12. Mary

My suggestion… Poshmark or mercari! I have had the best luck selling vintage clothing from my grandma’s closet! There is no upfront cost, you are decluttering and having fun! Oh and making moneyπŸ’°πŸ€‘!
If you want to try poshmark, get $5 using code NZJES! Or Mercari you get $10, FJHSAT! 😍❀️

Anyone have experience direct selling tupperware? Thoughts ? Thanks

    • Jennifer Manwaring

A girl on my Rodan+Fields team sold Tupperware, she said she couldn’t handle all the deliveries and parties. If you ever think about selling skincare I’d love to chat! jenmanwaring@myrandf.com

      • hilly

Thanks Jennifer for the info I appreciate it. Wonder why the delivery was too much was it a lot of sales perhaps? Thanks so much for your reply very nice of you:) πŸ™‚

        • Jennifer Manwaring

Hilly, Yes she had a lot of sales. I guess all the orders come directly to your home, so you would be in charge of personally delivering the items?

    • Frankie

I used to do Tupperware, and the shipping charges were very expensive if you didn’t meet a minimum order of I think $100. So then I was paying around $14 in shipping for smaller items. It also often took longer than two weeks for me to get items so my customers will be crabby with me. Also it was something that everybody wanted to see the product or for you to have inventory on hand and it does take up a lot of space. Later I sold 31 and it was a much better experience!

  14. Ksantos128

I sell thirty-one, I started in June and I love it. It’s super easy to start and they have a great support team and amazing people in the home office. They walk you through everything and always do online videos to help you succeed. I am a stay at home mother of 2 and watch my 4 nieces and nephews. Try and check it out, if you like it, please sign up with me my email is ksantos128@gmail.com if you have any questions. Or check my link out at mythirtyone.com/1934029

  15. Elizabeth

Does someone have a suggestion on selling baby clothes? I have tons and would like to get some money back for them .

    • marie

Poshmark is a great app to sell baby/kids, men’s, and women’s clothing and accessories. It’s really easy to take photos on your phone and list items. For sales under $15, poshmark keeps $2.95, for items over $15, they keep 20%. I’ve been using the app in my spare time for about a year and have made over $5,000. Use code PZXUT to sign up and get $5 to spend ☺

    • Carin03

I have the best luck with FB local yard sale pages… I will sell gently used or new items alone and then pair like items of the same size into small lots. I make more than I do selling to resale stores.

  16. Kb

I started working on Mechanical Turk thanks to this website! It took awhile but if you do a little research and utilize resources, you can make good money. I pulled in $175 last week and $200 the week before that.

      What do you do exactly?

    • Sarah

Really thinking about doing this. Did you transcribe?

There all sorts of hits, including academic surveys, photo rating and moderation, confirming video types, transcriptions, approving Ibotta receipts, data entry, etc. The only problem is that they accept members in waves, and often reject the first time.

    • Beth

So do you know how it works as far as claiming it as income for tax purposes? Do you get a w2 at the end of the year?

To add to the receipt apps, you should try RECEIPTPAL and RECEIPT HOG. Pal gives you points for every single receipt you scan. Hog has a tier of points and spins. I just do all my receipts in both and if one gets rejected, so be it. OH! And you need to try FETCH REWARDS (referral code: NV4KG) if you buy brand name products!

    • moria

receiptpal currently isn’t accepting new members. I just tried.

      • Allison πŸ’™

My husband had that issue when he signed up. He got an email not long after that he was in. Just give it a little while πŸ™‚

I am a representative for Wildtree. An innovative direct sales company that offers meal planning at its best with gluten free, non-gmo, all organic products and recipes. Finished product is cheaper than Blue Apron and other at home “workshop” type meals.

  20. Tara

I use two apps that are super helpful in earning money back. Fetch Rewards is a grocery app that I feel earns money back actually quicker then Ibotta. You earn points toward gift cards. 3000 points gets you $3 giftcard to a large number of different kinds. Use code NG1FK to get 1500 points off the bat.
The other app I love is VeryDice. I roll dice daily to earn tickets for items such as gifts or whatever and gift cards. I’ve redeemed 3x for gifts for my daughter. Use code 575708 for 70 free rolls.
Good luck and thanks Hip2Save for all the amazing ways you have taught me to save.

    • Tara

I forgot to add I’ve only been playing VeryDice for a month.

      • Ana

I used your referral code for fetch Tara! Here’s mine if anyone wants to try it out. DN5TQ

Kb, I have signed up for Mechanical Turk and was denied, do you have any suggestions on how to get on with them?

    • ashley

I’m not kb, but I thought I would share. I was denied the first time I signed up. I didn’t think anything of it, and weeks later I got an email that I was suddenly accepted. I didn’t do a thing.

  23. Haley

While MLM companies may be a good option for some, please approach with caution. Many, MANY people lose money or end up having to buy enough product “for themselves” just to meet quotas. Also, when you have to rely on recruiting and encouraging those in your downline to sell in order for you to make money, it makes your income quite variable and out of your control.

    • Sheila

Not only lose money but friends who get frustrated when they’re mistaken as a sale or future team member when all they wanted to be was your friend. Just sayin MLM is not everyone’s cup of tea.

      • Shannon

Yes I avoid all the mlm moms like the plague because I know they don’t want to be friends they just want to sell me stuff. Literally strangers have approached me in public and pretend to be friendly in order to try and push junk on me. No thanks.

    • Sarianna

Seriously, MLMs are businesses who use their ’employees’ and their friends as pyramid scheme fodder. I mean, if you want to burn your social capital on getting your friends to give you money and only see a small return on it at best, while letting your friends know you want their money over their friendship, go right ahead. But don’t be misled that you’re “owning your own business.” That’s the marketing. Your relationships are the product they’re trying to get you to sell off, not the kitschy tools or beauty products.
Don’t believe me? Look at the comment threads. How many people here are trying to get other people to buy into the scheme?

  24. Jennifer Manwaring

With Rodan+Fields you can earn a real paycheck without having consultants under you. in R+F, all payments are based on product sales. I work from home, my websites are online. I carry zero inventory, and I don’t have to throw “parties”. I have been with R+F for over 2 years and it has been a HUGE blessing for my family. If you want to know more feel free to email me at jenmanwaring@myrandf.com

Whoops! That was meant to go to the general response, not yours personally, sorry! But I can say Once Upon A Child is a great option or if you are willing to take pictures of them and list and ship them, Kidizen is a great resale app for childrens clothing! I have sold a lot of my kids clothes on there! It’s like ebay or mercari or poshmark, but specifically for children’s or maternity clothing, children’s room decor and books. https://get.kidizen.com#ggq6h

    Anyone ever worked with Disney?

    • Another Sarah

My sis in law works for Disney and LOVES it!!! She loves helping others plan their perfect vacation at no additional cost to the family traveling!! I have a couple of friends who do it to and they love it as well! On the flip side, we went through a family friend who works for Disney when we booked our disney cruise and had an amazing experience. She was so knowledgeable and had amazing tips for us. She answered all of our questions and got our large family all rooms close together. She worked hard to get us our ideal vacation and it really was an incredible experience. We are going through her again on our next one!

Do you know if the people who work for Disney get any benefits…insurance?

I’m a stay at home Mom and military spouse. Our family has taken advantage of hip2save savings and advice for a few years now! Love it! An article like this is what sparked my search for a work at home business that worked for me. I had never tried direct sales. I was intimidated by selling quotas etc.
I found Pink Zebra home fragrance and all my assumptions about direct sales were gone. What a great company to work with! Great commission, no monthly selling quotas, eco friendly high quality products, and an amazing charitable family oriented corp office.
Thanks to Pink Zebra I help supplement our families income every month.
If you’d like more info about pink zebra I’m happy to help. Or you can check it out here http://www.pinkzebrahome.com/hscostie

Anyone sold to thredup? Can you give me some feedback on your experience?

    • E

Don’t waste your time. They didn’t take an on trend, in season, worn once by me perfect condition Kate Spade dress. F them.

    • Shannon

Don’t do it! They give you nothing for your clothes and charge to send sent it back if you say no. That’s how they make money. I’ve had good experiences with buying clothes there though.

    • Josie

The items that I sent in were all very clean and nice. Each item was a designer piece and in great condition. In the instructions I was notified that I wouldn’t be receiving any items back, even if they didn’t accept them. I could, however, receive the items back if I asked and paid for them to be returned. Only 4 of my items were accepted. Hard to believe, but I received a credit to their online store that totalled under $12 after all was said and done. Seriously, I could’ve sold my stuff at a yard sale for the same amount. Plus, I would’ve received cash instead of credit!!!!

    • Colleen

I’ve done it twice and it is completely NOT WORTH IT. I think between two huge bags of stuff, I only made about $25. Plus the second time I sent stuff in, I had to PAY for the bag to send stuff back in. Never again.

    • Laura

I would skip this. I sent clothes that were in good condition some of them are new with tags and I still didn’t get anything for it and I didn’t want to have to pay money to have clothes shipped back.

I’m not going to push for direct sales because it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I am a new consultant for Usborne Books and I absolutely love it! They are a book publisher and have a created a product that is educational, fun and focused on the details. For example they make rounded corners on board books, finger trails which are awesome for early reading/writing, transitional board-paper back books, and a number of non-fiction books where specialists in the field actually collaborate with the authors and illustrators. They have books on Shakespeare for Elementary children and the Orchestra for preschoolers! Send me an email at readingwithashleybrown@gmail.com if you’d like more information.

I’ve been following this site for yearrss and usually try out everything posted. The best and easiest way I’ve earned money so for is through a company called Ohm connect. I haven’t seen it posted here bit it is seriously awesome! For California residents only at this time. They text you about twice a week telling you to save energy for an hour. If you do they pay you! How cool is that! I’ve been saving ky earnings since April and currently have $1940 saved! Saving for a family vacation. Possibly Disney Cruise! May take awhile. But completely free! Can’t beat that! No credit card needed. Completely free and legit! You will not regret doing it. πŸ’°πŸ’°πŸ’°

I’ve been a follower of Hip2Save for yours now. I always love the posts! I even worked a part-time holiday job through Amazon last year when it was posted on here. I am now with an awesome Direct Sales company that I have been really successful with (which can be hard these days)! It was/is completely free to join, no fees, nothing.. so I figured I didn’t have anything to lose. I definitely don’t regret it! Thank you Hip2Save team for all that you do!

Mechanical Turk pays very little but I did it for awhile and was able to save up enough to buy Christmas gifts one year from Amazon including a Kindle paper white.

  44. Marie

Hmmm, All of these seem like great ways to make a little extra cash. But do they actually generate enough income to pay some serious bills? I have done a few but It’s just extra pocket money, I do know a friend who worked as a cust service rep for Amazon and QVC. Those generated enough money for her to be able to stay at home for awhile.

I am a stay at home mom and have been doing Swagbucks for a year and a half. It’s super easy and you can earn points by printing coupons, doing surveys, completing offers, etc. I make around $100 per month and I was able to pay for Christmas last year for my three children entirely with earnings from Swagbucks! You should check it out! Here is my link if you are interested: https://www.swagbucks.com/refer/Tricia1785
