Well, it’s official 😟 …

ToysRUs officially announced yesterday, September 18th, that they have voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. They are making plans to restructure their debt and have received a commitment for over $3 billion in debtor-in-possession financing from various lenders, which is expected to immediately improve their financial health and support its ongoing operations during the process.

Keep in mind that there are approximately 1,600 ToysRUs and BabiesRUs stores around the world that are continuing to operate as usual. Also, customers can continue to shop for toy and baby products on ToysRUs.com and BabiesRUs.com and the loyalty programs will also continue as normal.

However, if you have any ToysRUs gift cards laying around, you may want to plan to use them soon!

I used a gift card I had on a car seat order and they cancelled it :/ now my gc doesn’t work and I didnt get refunded. UGH going to have to call and hopefully something will work.
Good reminder for everyone to try to use up those gc’s πŸ™‚

    • Lauren

Yeah my Diono booster seat order was cancelled as well

      • Tina

Mine got cancelled too:( super bummed, but everything happens for a reason

        • Lauren

Several other places have it on sale for that same sale price BtW- without the 25% off

      • Laura

My diono order got cancelled too 😒

  2. Amy

I read in several different articles that they have no plans to close stores right now so I don’t think you necessarily have to scramble to use gift cards right away.

    • s

      wouldn’t believe everything you read

      • Amy

        Never said I did

Toys “R” Us should start having birthday parties in their store exclusively for kids and watch their sales soar!! Seriously, where are we going to shop for toys if they close? Also would be nice if they had a section of an expensive toys consistently in the same place.

    • Sophia

      They really should!

A lot of families struggle to afford housing and food right now. My housing costs increased $250 a month over the last three years and my food costs have nearly tripled. I have no student loans, no auto loans (no car household), no mortgage, a small amount of credit card debt paid off in a few weeks and taxes. When people struggle to afford necessities, the consequences affect specialty stores like Toys R Us. I think the other issue nagging TRU is people are starting to shop year around out of necessity. Why pay full price when it can be had at 70% off?

      • krystal

I agree completely, we budget hard with 3 kids so I buy all year for Christmas and birthdays taking full advantage of end of season clearance. I found H2S when I had my second daughter and a 3 year old and I became a stay at home mom, thanks to the sales on here last year my girls got a Barbie dream house I paid $40 for instead of $170 and this year my oldest is getting the monster high school my middle is getting the Barbie dream cove and my toddler will be getting a Fisher price zoo set. A $250+ value all for less then $60! I can’t imagine now ever paying full price for any toys. Thanks to H2S I give my kids and family a great Christmas without credit card debt or guilt.

This is actually one of the things they are planning–to put an “event center” into stores so they become a destination for events, not just a store to buy things. This bankruptcy doesn’t mean they’re going to close–businesses declare bankruptcy to clear up their debts all the time.

This is off subject, but I have a Lands End coupon ($50 off $100) that expires tonight. I won’t be using it and would love to give it to someone that will use it. Leave your email if you’d like it. Remember, you can also use your shop your way points in addition to this coupon if your a SYW member!

Hi Sam! How nice!!! If you haven’t already given it away, I sure could use it. That’s where I buy my husband’s work pants, and he is looking shabby. πŸ˜‰ Thanks for paying it forward! Kellymainor at gmail.com

    • Ashley

My little girls school uniform has to be lands end. Could really use the coupon. I am sure I could find something to trade. Ashleygustafson01 at gmail dot com

      • sann

Darn, I just threw mine away, garbage man came yesterday πŸ™ but I can tell you if you request a catalog there is a 50 off 100 in there and some other coupons.

      • sann

I found a lands end coupon, I knew I had one πŸ™‚ It’s $15 off $75. Do you want it?

    • Sam

I also have 15% off Old Navy (can use in addition to other codes and promotions) expires 9/21. If anyone wants the code, lmk.

  5. Amy

They already had some toys on clearance…

  6. Karla

They need to do something about people stealing from them. I’ve witnessed 2 robberies each at different stores and I live in a nice area.

  7. Micki

I heard a caller on the Clark Howard radio show say that there was a sign at the register of her Toys R Us stating that they are not currently accepting gift cards. CH said the courts will decide whether to honor gift cards as the bankruptcy proceeds. Just don’t take your kids to pick something out planning to use a gift card , only to find out at the register that they won’t take it!

  8. Hilary

TRU is overpriced and their customer service is terrible. They have nothing you can’t find cheaper on Amazon at W-M or Target. I don’t know of anyone who even shops there anymore.

    • Shannon

Me neither. My tru is near ross, tj maxx and target. I doubt anyone ever buys anything there with that competition. I never do.

    • Emilytwinmom

Exactly. We only go there for skylanders toys, everything else can be found closer to home for half the price πŸ™

    • Iluvh2s

My thoughts exactly! So overpriced and you can do better on Amazon.

  9. Schuwoman

They do have a great variety of items that other stores lack but definitely overpriced compared to their competitors. If they could price more competitively and offer coupons more often it would bring in more financially savvy people like this H2S group. I only go to Toysrus once or twice a year. Last time we shopped there we walked out with nothing and placed an order on Target.com for what I needed and saved a good amount of money.

    • Erin

Their coupons used to be so much better because there were fewer exclusions. I used to get the really expensive Legos that never go on sale otherwise but now Legos are excluded. I primarily price match there now.

  10. amanda

Just FYI to anyone interested, all Disney Infinity Characters are Buy 1 Get 4 Free at Toysrus.com ! The items don’t say anything about the sale until you add them to your cart. Don’t use gift cards or your order will be cancelled though with all this bankruptcy hubub

    • Donna

Thanks for the tip on Disney Infinity. Rounding out our collection and got 10 items for $40.

  11. Amer0317

I went today and there was a sign saying “due to a nationwide issue, we are unable to process gift cards”.

  12. Sandy

“All Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us stores and e-commerce sites are open for business,” Nichole Hayes, a media representative for Toys “R” Us, told International Business Times Tuesday. “There are no changes to customer programs including loyalty programs, baby registry [and] gift cards, etc.”

  13. Ashley

TRU has been having problems with their online site and it has affected their registers. I believe this is why they cannot use gift cards. They also price match. I never shopped at TRU because they’re always 25% higher than other stores, until I discovered price matching. I do wish for more coupons but you cannot price match AND use a coupon or the 10% off on Thursdays. I have a few around me and some are better than others customer service wise. They are much more willing to check their shelves than Target and I don’t ever bother to call Wal-Mart. If they close we will no longer have a B and M toy store.

  14. tr ham

I absolutely love Toys R us and always have. there is something magical about being a kid and going to the toy store to pick out THE toy that you want or that you earned. There is no comparable magic to surfing online.

    • C

THANK YOU! Totally agree. I will be so sad without them

  15. Alison C.

I have a merchandise credit from a return…would that process like a gift card? I don’t want to waste my time to try using it

    • Jd

I just used two merchandise credits in-store today with no issues, hope you’ll be able to do the same πŸ™‚

  16. Amyr

Wow. They’re building a brand new TRU right down the street from me. Weird.

  17. nicole

I have a PayPal claim open with them, I never received my item and was charged for it. Which was great deal I found on here. Wondering if they are going to have awesome deals this Christmas season because I will price match elsewhere. I am so done with toys r us.

  18. Jenny

I bought a $20 TRU gift card for $10 on Groupon a few weeks ago. I hope it works!

  19. Dee

This bankruptcy declaration doesn’t mean they are closing. In fact, the company has put out statements about that which are mostly being ignored by social media where people read the headline and assume it means they’re closing without bothering to read the information in the story. They’re filing bankruptcy to get their debts under control and basically try to get a fresh start–something that businesses do all the time and remain open. One of the things they are supposedly planning to do is to put “event centers” into their stores so they can host birthday parties, baby showers, all kinds of group events right at the stores. I think it’s a great idea and might work out for them. Remember all those birthday party centers that were open several years ago? They didn’t last. But, I think combining that with the toy store would be enough for each to help the other survive.

    • VickiB

Exactly, payless has been doing it for years…

  20. Laura

Toys R Us is super expensive, I’m not surprised at all.

  21. Marie

I was just there today for my twins 3rd birthday. They got some gift cards, and they were accepted with no issues. They also gave my boys balloons and crowns. I had no idea they were filing, and there was no signage anywhere in plain site. (They did have great stuff on clearance) πŸ™‚

  22. Sara

I was just in there last weekend. They had a ton of stuff on clearance to make way for Christmas stuff they said. But they had stuff still on clearance from two months ago. Example the Lion Guard light up plush was on “clearance” for $21, it’s on sale for $11.99 on their website. But I bought it at Target 3 months ago on clearance for $6. And their Fur Real Dragon is on clearance for $59; again got mine at Target 3 months ago for $30. But I do like their rewards program, I get a reward almost monthly. They do have some great sales and clearances. I remember back in the day when I was little, Toys R US was THE place, it was giant, tons of toys, bright, clean. Now it’s dark, dirty, not as many toys, it’s sad. I guess most people shop on Amazon or something and I don’t, I go to real stores still.

  23. Jenny

I used ToysRUs giftcard today in store today, it’s work fine. so if you have issue online just go to store use it. store also do price match online, target, walmart. ect.. check their policy price match.

  24. Steph

TRU and BRU had a technical issue with their servers that wouldn’t accept gift cards. I confirmed today the issue was fixed and they are absolutely still accepting gift cards.

  25. nin

I just sold 2 $25 TRU gift cards (one was a merchandise return) for $20 on one of those gift card sell sights. I never make it there often for the kids’ toys and this way my two kids can just get the cash and save it towards something else or get a toy somewhere where the prices do seem cheaper than TRU

Just another idea for someone wanting to use up gift card or merchandise credit but not wanting to pick something out right now.
