I would love some positive advice. I have a 6 year old that has a lot of anxiety, and he is struggling at school. I have started researching a little about essential oils, and I have read lavender is good for calming. I read that in order to use it topically, you have to mix it with, I believe it was called a carrying oil or something. Anyway, I know he won’t let me put this on him. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Should I try making a linen spray to put on his clothing? Would this help him at school? Please no negative comments or judging. Without going into details about his struggles, I am just looking for some positive advice about essential oils. If this is something that could help, I would like to try. Thanks in advance.

      Hi, V!
I use and distribute young living oils. I love peace and calming for my oldest, he has high functioning autism. It’s amazing! I started with lavender. I feel that peppermint, lavender, and lemon are great to start with. Make sure you find high quality oils, the cheap oils often contain more bad than good. A carrier oil simply dilutes the concentrated oil. I use coconut oil to dilute peppermint. I got into oils after I began to research candles in the home. I now use them for soooo many other things!!!

Carrier oils is just to keep kids safe and dilute the oils. We put the mixture into a roller ball jar which means it’s not super oily on the skin if that would help him. A spray on his clothing could also help or they make diffusing “jewelry” that if he might wear a piece and be able to breathe in the essence of the oil. Lots of options for benefitting from oils. Do your research on quality oils though – there are lots of reputable companies out there (besides he well known MLM brands) but there are also lots of cheap garbage out there.

Yes yes yes 🙂 Always dilute. Especially with littles. And if you are going to diffuse alternate between on and off. A lot of these cheap priced diffusers don’t have great settings. And you probably shouldn’t diffuse all night long with a child. Just a few hours at bedtime or in the morning while getting ready. Also be careful what you diffuse around pets. I’d be cautious about applying it to your child at school. People forget others are breathing the oils as well. And they could be very sensitive to certain scents. Remember being pregnant and hating ALL THE SMELLS?! You can purchase personal inhalers (similar the ones made by Vicks when you are sick) and they could keep it in their pocket or backpack. Please don’t solely rely on people who are selling oils. From anywhere. There is usually no training except from whoever sold their oils to them. Just because I read WebMD every single day (I don’t lol) doesn’t make me a doctor. I’m not bashing MLMs or any other company. I’m just trying to have your best interests at heart. Especially when it comes to children 🙂 A really good place to start is with information from Robert Tisserand. Or this might be useful. https://www.unusualhealth.com/learning-about-essential-oils/ Good luck!

Hi v! I use oils to help calm a few of my kids down at night
I have a diffuser in their room and mine and use lavender camomile it it just helps me to relax. I have some doterra and some off of amazon and have been happy with both I apply them topically for things like
I have used them for headaches – they help so fast and amazingly, coughs, congestion, cold sores
I think it’s definitely worth trying for anxiety
Doterra makes one called serenity that’s a blend of lavender camomiles and something others that Ilove . I have a friend that uses doterra balance to even one of her kids temperaments too! Try it!!

My daughter has autism and a lot of anxiety sometimes. I am as uptight as you can get, a totally raging b#tch. Together we are “so fun”!!
I got some oil to sample from Ellia.com called “Let Go” and it does really take the anxiety and worries away, and keeps me from wanting to kill people in general.
I put a drop or two on a cotton ball and put it in my bra. Sometimes my kid will do this but she’s usually so pissy that I sneak wipe a drop on the back neckline of her t-shirt. She gets angry but the scent quickly diffuses her anger, it works that well!
For a boy you could just put a drop on the back of his neck hem on a shirt or put a drop on a cotton round and safety pin it inside his shirt.
We also utilize the SLEEP and STRESS aromatherapy line at Bath and Bodyworks, the room sprays, pillow mist, lotion cremes and the rollerball of essential oils.

Hello V, I can’t offer any advice on essential oils for your 6 year old who is experiencing a lot of anxiety from school, but I do have some suggestions for you to consider. I have been tutoring kids for years, and one of the most in interesting observations I made is that about 3/4 of the students I have worked with have late birthdays. In other words, they were born in the summer or fall months and are the youngest or among the youngest in their classes. Maturity plays a large part in success. See Malcolm Gladwell’s book, “Outliers” for some fascinating examples of that. There are definite advantages to being older rather than younger in a class, and boys can sometimes just not be ready.

Also, talk to him and get a clear picture of what he is stressed out about. Maybe it is the teacher. Or maybe it is a classmate. Is it all subjects or just one? Some kids just need some one on one instruction that the classroom teacher simply does not have time to provide. Maybe he feels like a failure or that the pressure is too great. Ultimately, you as a parent are the most important person in your child’s education. You have options. Check them out. Sometimes the best option is to homeschool a struggling student at least for a grade level or more. Sometimes the best option is to hire a tutor for some one on one attention. Sometimes repeating a grade and allowing the student to take the material again is of great benefit. Talk to the teacher and find out what they are seeing in the classroom. Best wishes!
