Save on Gently Used Clothing & Gear!

Did you know that REI.com now sells gently-used men’s & women’s clothing, footwear & gear? REI Co-op Used Gear Beta is a new online program that offers REI Co-op customers a more sustainable and affordable way to purchase pre-loved outdoor gear & apparel that customers have returned.

Products listed for sale through the REI Co-op Used Gear Beta program have come from co-op members’ and customers’ returns, which helps avoid filling landfills and reduces the production of new gear.

All products in the REI Co-op Used Gear Beta program are processed and inspected for quality and have four condition levels – like new, lightly worn, moderately worn, and well worn.

Note that shipping charges are $7.50 for the first item and $3.50 for each additional item in an order. Note that free ship to store/REI Store Pickup option isn’t available for the Used Gear Beta program.

Prefer Patagonia products?

Patagonia also recently launched their Worn Wear program! Worn Wear products are Patagonia items that come from their closets and garages – some pieces are used by people and others were collecting dust in their distribution center. They are functionally perfect, but may have a cosmetic flaw.

Worn Wear accepts Patagonia clothing that functions perfectly and is in good condition – including Men’s, Women’s, Kid’s & Baby’s in both sportswear and technical styles as well as Patagonia luggage.

Plus, whenever you bring in your gently-used Patagonia gear to a Patagonia retail location, they’ll give you a Worn Wear Merchandise Credit valued at up to 50% of the price that they will sell it for. Most items are cleaned using CO2 which saves water and energy compared to conventional methods.

Still a lil pricey. That’s for me may not be for others.

Love this! I try to buy used from my local community when I can and I love that large companies are offering his option now instead of wasting things.

These sites are definitely way pricey. While I appreciate what they are doing, EBay is still the best place to get deals on things like these. That said, it is hit or miss, so you do have to check back often!

Programs like this give me hope! The amount of textile waste and human rights abuse that go into each piece of conventional clothing is appalling. I’ve been transition towards only buying ethical textiles, and since I don’t have a large budget, second hand (the best form of ethical clothing) is the way to go!

Maybe pricey but REI and Patagonia make some great products, and this is a great idea. If you think used Patagonia is expensive here in some places in Asia used Patagonia products sell for a small fortune.

If you have a local REI store, check for periodic “Garage Sale” events where they clear out this type of merch. It takes some treasure hunting abilities to find the near-perfect gloves that someone returned because they felt a bit snug/loose on them, vs the pants that have a huge gash.

I love their garage sales and bought gear for many of my scouts and family members. I know they have stopped them at the flagship store, I hope this isn’t an indication that they are stopping them at the rest of the stores.
