Good morning!! I was wondering what your thoughts are about this. I’ve been thinking about it for a while now. I’m wondering how well it works and is this a great price? I know it’s half off almost. We pay a lot for cable and thinking about the fire stick and this together? I’m not techy and I don’t keep up with it either. Any comments would be appreciated! Thanks!!

    • Jennifer

You only need one streaming device per TV. If you have decent internet speeds, streaming via a roku works great. You should look into what alternative streaming sources (eg. Hulu, YouTube live) you want to use before deciding between roku, Amazon stick, apple TV, or chrome sticks. Not all streaming devices support all streaming sources.

    • Swirlypop

Roku is great! When my sons got an apartment for college I wld not pay for their cable. Instead I bought them a roku. At first it was an adjustment but now they love it! Always plenty to watch. The biggest complaint I hear regarding streaming only is not having live sports games. Not an issue for us. I don’t know about price for this. I paid $25 each on a Black Friday special a few years back. You must have good internet.

  2. Sarah

I’m interested to know what others think as well that have used this. I’m over paying cable prices.

  3. Jackie

Same question here. Ok so we have Apple TV, would this be similar to it? And how much would you have to pay a month for this subscription? Thank you in advance.

    • Mama

There isn’t any subscription cost. Just purchase the Roku and add channels. Some channels may charge, this is clearly marked. There are a lot of free channels.

      • Jackie

Great! Thanks. Is it like Apple TV then?

        • Mama

Sorry, I’m not really familiar with Apple TV…maybe someone else might be able to answer this…

        • Swirlypop

          Yes, like Apple TV.

  4. Ashley

I have this model and I like it a lot. We previously had the older Roku streaming stick and it stopped getting consistent wifi. I haven’t had any issues with this one and am very happy with it. We haven’t cut the cord yet but plan to soon.

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Thanks for the great review Ashley! We sure do appreciate it!

  5. D Lynn

We have an old Roku and love it. Saving over $100 a month with not using cable is sooo worth it. But we don’t get sports. It helps if you can share some of the extras like Hulu and Netflix with other family members.

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Thanks for sharing your experience! Good to know how much the Roku has helped you save!

  6. Mama

I only have experience with the Roku. We really like it. You can pick the channels that you like to watch… You need to know that some channels do not do live streaming. I noticed that this Roku comes with 14 days trial of Sling. This will give you a bunch more channels that stream live. I think this is a great alternative to cable. We are happy with ours.

  7. Nancy

Thank you for posting! I was in the market to buy one. Heads up that there’s a free trial to Sling TV attached to your order. You can remove it from your shopping cart so you don’t get signed up for a monthly service!

  8. Niki

It is similar to Apple TV. I like the roku better than the Apple TV although my favvvvvvv is amazon fire stick!!!! Just my opinion!

  9. Mary

Our family enjoys this. Our teenagers enjoy it. They enjoy Netflix and Hulu. Simply to set up but you do need Wifi to stream. My parents who are retired also enjoy this. For the price you can’t go wrong. When we tried Hulu they gave us a free trial period too. Just didn’t want to pay the huge cable bill as I would rather spend our money spreading it over several things.

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Thanks for the feedback Mary! Good to know how well liked it has been!

  10. Kathy

I have not figured out the pros and cons of getting a streaming device versus the streaming stick. The TV we have is older and it is not a smart TV. Do I need the stick for that? Is the streaming device helpful if your TV is already a smart TV? Help! 🙂

    • Mama

You don’t need a smart TV. Roku uses wifi.

    • AS18

Just make sure your older tv has HDMI slots. I have an older roku that supports composite (red, white, and yellow cables.) I use it on my 25 year old tv. Some new streaming devices don’t have this option.

    • Paul

If you have an older tv, without hdmi, make sure you get the Roku Express+ model. That model, additionally, has the red, white and yellow connections, for older tv’s. If you are considering buying one, that’s the model that will be $22, at Walmart, for Black Friday. I love the Roku. Although, we have cable, most of my time is spent watching the Roku. Unlike cable, there is always something great to watch – for free.

  11. M

FireStick>>Roku. There is no comparison. Especially with Kodi and the live tv apps avail now. Look this up guys….

    • Amy

I can’t stand Kodi. Every show we try to watch is blurry or stops every minute to load. I shouldn’t complain because it’s a streaming service and it’s free, but man it is irritating. We don’t even touch the firestick anymore.

  12. Janet

We have this and have been very pleased. We had started with Chromecast to stream before we cut the cord and I felt like that had limitations. We got this and a Sling subscription and have been very happy. We had Directv before with no DVR, so my kids find far more to watch this way. We aren’t huge tv people with set shows we watch each week, so really the only limitations we are noticing is live sports. We ended up getting a 100 mile range antenna to get our local channels which has been good for NFL but find Sling limiting for NHL which is my husband’s biggest complaint. Otherwise we are very happy and saving a lot of $$ each month!

  13. Melodiemomma

We absolutely LOVE our roku! One of my best and most used purchases! Been waiting for this sale to start so we could get a Roku for the downstairs tv! Thanks so much HIP2SAVE!

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

You are most welcome! Thanks a bunch for your review! Super glad you could score another for your downstairs tv!

I think Roku is great. The difference between a device and a streaming stick is that the stick is easier to move around and offers less clutter, and is a few dollars cheaper. The main disadvantage is that a stick is wifi only. If you have strong wifi it shouldn’t make a difference, but for me the streaming is better if you can plug it in directly to the internet connection rather than wifi. These all work with an HDMI connection to the TV.

With Roku, you buy the device once and never pay them again. You add channels (some of which are paid, like Netflix, Amazon, and many obscure ones). Some channels you can add are partly free (Comedy Central, you can watch most shows free with commercials the day after they air, for a week; older stuff you need to login with a cable subscription). And there are tons of obscure commercial-supported free channels to add (we should have a post here with suggestions for free channels). My favorite is Pluto, which has about 100 free channels on it, including lots of obscure news channels, CBS news online, weather channel, some odd movie channels, and even a new cat video channel.

This is a pretty good deal, but it should be around all week long at various stores, so you can think about it.

  15. Julie

I love our Roku and our Firestick. And I agree with Jon, anyone have any suggestions of free channels they like to watch? We like cw seed because it has all the old Who’s line is it anyway? shows.

  16. Viv

Does anyone know if this will be the best deal during Black Friday? Thank you.

    • Paul

Walmart will have the Roku Express+ for $22. Thus is the only model with a connection for older televisions. But, it also has the hdmi connection. So, it’s good for every type of television.

Some of my fav channels are cnet, crackle, youtube, dailymotion and The Roku channel. I like Plex and Roku Media Player, for playing my own media, from my laptop. I use the Firefox browser, to cast videos, from my phone, to the Roku. I like the Hasbro Studios channel, because they have all the classic 1980’s episodes of Transformers and GI Joe. TubiTv is one of my new favorites. I added it, a while ago. But, the icon just caught my eye, a few nights ago. It has some really great movies and tv series. I just watched the entire run of “The IT Crowd” and the movie “All Of Me”, which was well worth watching the limited commercials.

  17. Kathy

My HDMI slot is on the back of the TV, does this pose a problem with the stick on a wall mounted TV?

    • A

This isn’t a stick… click the link or look at the photo. Smh

      • Kathy

I am aware of that. I am trying to determine what is the best option for our home. Most people have been VERY helpful with their experiences of these devices.

        • Lel

I have the original stick. We have been off cable for about 2-3 yrs. such a savings. My tv fits very snug in the cabinet and the ports are on the side so the roku sometimes gets jiggled or bent when I dust. I might upgrade to this one before the stick stops working.

  18. Cassie C Reid

We have three versions of the ROKU in three different rooms. We love it for Netflix and Hulu as well as Amazon Prime, etc. It works great for all of those. But we recently got a Sling subscription and it crashes every one of our three ROKUs. So we cancelled Sling. Just something to think about. I wonder if this newest version is better at handling heavy apps like Sling than the older versions. Any thoughts? I have heard that AppleTV can handle Sling but I don’t want to buy another device, especially one that pricey.

  19. CM

Can anyone please answer this — my question my husband like live sports & I like certain channels- can I add specific channels HGTV, Bravo other family members like Hallmark channel? I’m not sure what to get since we are cutting cable cord…is this the right system for my family

    • A

This is simply the device… you need to check the streaming source you want to use. Go to Sling or whoever you will use and check the channel packages. They have HGTV and sports packages. ESPN is also an app and can be paid for separately. We paid for it during college football season then cancelled. What I️ do is rotate. Like this month we have Netflix since new releases came out like longmire. Next month I’ll suspend it and maybe use Sling so I can watch live Christmas events. Then I’ll suspend it and then on January I’ll switch to HULU. I️ use everything everyone else is mentioning but instead of paying for all three every single month I️ pick one and skip the others.

    • Happymama

I heard Sing and PSvue are the only ways to get sports streamed but not sure? I haven’t actually tried the free trials yet but will! We HAVE to have the Big Ten network as well as any other sport channel. Check out Sling…it may be what your looking for. You can choose ad-ons.

  20. Jennifer

We use a PS4 to stream Netflix, Hulu and Amazon because we got rid of cable (best decision ever).

Is there any advantage to getting a stick to use instead?

  21. CW

We got rid of cable over a year ago (increased our internet data pkg for streaming). We have Roku boxes on all our tv’s now and have used Sling and PlayStation Vue cable streaming services. We prefer PlayStation Vue and it includes some sports channels. Just wish it included live NBC channel (it has some NBC on demand content). The Roku’s with the earbub jack in the remote are great for when one person falls asleep, and the other person is still watching tv.

Is this Roku Premier + that Best Buy sells the same thing as the Roku Ultra that sells on Roku’s website for $99.99?

  23. Sarah

Did this deal sell out? I had 4 in my cart and hit to pay and it’s showing $99 each now.

    • Sarah

Never mind, it kicked me out of my account

  24. Erin R.

I highly recommend going to untangle.tv if you are trying to figure out what streaming service is best for you. It will lead you through a series of questions to figure out what channels, shows, and types of programs you like to watch. Then, it will recommend what streaming service is best based on your choices. It will even tell you prices and which devices support these services. It helped me cut the cord for sure!

  25. Chelle Belle

The other benefit to this over the stick is that you can put in a micro SD card in it. Once you get so many channels downloaded to the sticks…or even this device… then it’ll have to reload the channels since it only has space for so many. Put the microSD card in, and it says that’ll eliminate that loading. I have a lot of channels on mine, and the microsd worked like a charm. As others have said, my roku stick doesn’t get as good of a wifi signal when its farther away from the router compared to my roku box. Lots of services are popping up so you can buy access to tv channels. If you have amazon prime, you also get access to amazon prime tv. I love game of thrones, so I just buy the monthly subscription to HBOnow while it’s on, then cancel. So much cheaper than cable! 🙂

  26. Debbie

I can’t find this deal…. is it over?

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Bummer! Yes. Gone now 🙁

  27. Mary

I was just able to buy one.
