Are you a DIRECTV customer? If you have been considering cutting the satellite and ditching the service, this is a must-read!

(Written by Bryn, Collin’s sister who had to share this awesome tip!)

Rumor has it that DIRECTV is running an insane promotion right now for existing customers who are debating whether to get rid of the satellite service. My husband and I constantly ask ourselves whether our monthly DIRECTV bill is worth the expense and ponder the decision to just go to a streaming service like Netflix or Hulu.

BUT, since we still have DIRECTV, I decided to give them a call! And that call just saved me $600!

If you have been considering canceling your service too, this may be an alternative! Simply dial DIRECTV customer service at 1-800-531-5000 and state “cancel service” when you get to the menu options. When asked, be sure to state that you are not moving (unless of course you are in the middle of a move!) and your call will then be routed directly to the customer retention/loyalty department.

You will then need to share with the customer service representative that you are wanting to reduce your monthly bill and are looking for any special offers that may be available for your account. Within a few minutes, the representative will let you know if your account qualifies for additional savings.

Guess what? I was offered a savings of $50 per month for the next 12 months! You guys! That’s a total savings of $600! Merry Christmas to me! 😱💃

I work in the customer retention department for DTV. We are giving away up to $80 again as of 3 pm today. However, if you are past due you would be able to take advantage of the offer until itโ€™s paid. If you have been with the company under a year you will not qualify. Most accounts will qualify from $35- $80 off depending on your plan. And if you call in, just say I would like to know my contract end date. They would then transfer you to the customer loyalty group.

    • Patricia Webb

I was only given $35.00 on my Select Pkg.for 12 months, is there anyway to increase that?

    • Jim

I tried that this past spring. since mine was bundled with Verizon I was only able to get 20 off. so i cancelled. guess they rather get no money in than give discount. had service for about 9 years. good luck to anyone who tries

    • Danielle

I called and was told that there are not any promotions available for mea black Friday deal crashed the system, and to try back on Tuesday.

  2. Steph

Just tried this and it worked. I got $50 for the next 12 months. Yay!

  3. Daniel

I got direct tv for 3 yrs. The last yr just month by month for i fulfilled my contract. Im a expierenced customer for sure. Yea,they lowered my bill last yr for they dnt wanna lose me. Its a long story what they put us through. Ill just make it short!! They suck!!! In all they do!!! Speak up or they take ur money

  4. Mary Bruenderman

Make the call. They looked at my package & we made no changes because mine is grandfathered in. However; I received $50 credit per month fo r 1 year for loyalty.

  5. Angela

I would like to thank you for this tip. I was thinking this wonโ€™t really work, but I did it and we are getting a savings of almost $80 a month!!! Yay!!!

    • Kathleen Bolyard

GOOD LUCK ALL OF U WHO HAVE BEEN OFFERED A REDUCTION ON YOUR BILL BUT BE WEAR THAT THEIR REPRESENTATIVES ARENT RESPONSIBLE FOR OFFERING U A PACKAGE THAT EITHER U DID NOT WANT AND THEY ARE CHARGING U FOR OR A PACKAGE IS FREE WHEN IT REALLY ISNT. I HAD MOVERS PACKAGE WITH FREE NFL PACKAGE FREE WHEN I LOOKED AT MY BILL I WAS CHARGED FOR IT. THE BIG WIGS IN THE COMPANY REFUSE 2 GIVE U WHAT THERE REPRESENTATIVES OFFERED AND SAID THAT THEY MISS REPRESENTED THEM. AT@T SUCKS TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE AND IF THERE REPRESENTATIVES ARE ALLOWED TO MISREPRESENT ACCORDING TO MANAGERS BUT YOU ARE NOT. ITS A BRECH OF THE CONTRACT AND I STILL RECIEVE A BILL FROM THEM…

Reading your review was nothing, if not painful. Based on your lack of mastery of spelling, grammar or syntax – it seems entirely plausible that perhaps you simply misunderstood in the first place.

        • Ricky

Yes, I love it. I’m a college student and the laziness of people these days; as far as proper English goes, drives me crazy!! From text messages to e-mails and even academic essays, majority of people have no communication skills left. Also, if you notice any grammatical errors in this, please e-mail me corrections? I am open to constructive criticism and prefer to write in proper English, when I can.

        • Admin

Thank you!! Some of you need grammar lessons and a dictionary.

      • Sony

I agree while heartily at&the customer service socks! The same charge you received from DTV for NFL, I received them as well. Also them made a mistake with my account number. Disconnected my service and told me I couldn’t us a check again. I’m out next month. Thank DTV for nothing!

  6. Daniel

Im going to make the call. And see what bull they gonna shoot at me,not to give a discount. Come on now. Dont make em seem they that good. Im only with them looking at other options. Sadly it been a yr..

  7. lisa

its a holiday deal they are offering right now. $50 off. i just called an thats what i was told! and it does not change your plan or term agreement.

  8. Pat McM

    Worked for me, THANKS!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. Dena B

I just called, took less time than 10 minutes, they gave me 50 off for 12 months, no change in programming or extension of contract!!! Then they gave me 4 months of showtime free! My mom then called and they gave her the same deal. Thank you so much for posting this!!!

  10. Quart

I did this about a week and a half ago. I noticed my bill had gone from $110 to $160 called an up and said that I was fouling to cancel and they dropped my bill to $80. Ill take that $960 a year raise.

  11. Sue m

It was great 10 minutes my bill went from $185 a month to $91 a month thank you DirecTV

  12. Bonnie

I strongly suggest that you search online for current complaints about Directv! Since AT&T bought them out, their customer service has went drastically downhill… One of the consumer complaints firms that I contacted had current complaints way over 10,000! A LOT of them were from customers being promised one price to find their bill increasing before the time frame was up! I was a loyal Directv customer for over 25 years but I will never use them again since AT&T took over… nothing but issues! I found their service to be great until it wasn’t… then you will encounter the same nightmare everyone else talks about! Sad…

  13. Mike

Thanks so much for posting this. I called & got 70$ off for 12 months

  14. Sandra Comstock

I’ll try it but ever since ATT took over the service has increased in price. I had them for 9 years then left them for 2 and came back to them and have been a customer going on another 7 years. I have seen all these deals they have for new customers but never any for existing ones. I’ll update as soon as I call but not holding my breath.

  15. Andra

Just wanted to thank you for the helpful tip on DirecTV I called them a complaint and they gave me $50 off for a year thank you very much๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿ’ฐ

  16. dani740

And this is why I love Hip2Save. Thank you so much! It took more than thirty minutes, but they finally offered me the $50 discount for twelve months. They also advised the package prices will be going down in January or February 2018. I have a hard time believing that, but I never thought I would get a $50 discount per month either.

  17. Ronnie Bass

Well i hope i can get some off if not im cancelled frolorsure it to dang high direct tv it out ragious i cant afford ot for what i have. So when i call hope they lower mine also if not they can take it and u know what

  18. Martha

Just called. Took over 20 minutes to connect with someone, but got $50 discount for 12 months, free HBO for 6 months and was eligible for a free upgrade to the ‘Gen 2’ wireless receiver!
    Thanks Direct Tv! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

    • Heather

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT UPGRADE TO THE GENIE 2!!!! I just got off the phone with them to get RID of the Genie 2. It’s HORRIBLE!! Freezes and loses connection all the time. It’s been nothing but a headache since the day we got it almost 3 months ago! Had a technician out today and it’s STILL NOT FIXED! I told them I want my old equipment back so we’re “downgrading”.

  19. Dwight

Att aka direct tv sucks no matter what discount get love the prouduct hate price and customer service. You say

  20. Santiago

They just gave me 50 dollars a month discount for 12 months. Thanks

  21. Aunt Jenny

I did exactly what you suggested and was offered the $50.00 off per month for a year not to cancel. I like Direct Tv and wouldn’t have cancelled, so thank you.

  22. Ebeneezer Feeblegeezer

I was a DirecTV customer for years. Customer service from them, even prior to the acquisition by AT&T, was nonexistent.
I was fortunate to be able to obtain service from another source (not DISH !) and dump them.
They have since made several calls wondering what they could do to get me back…wish they had been as concerned about keeping me as a customers as they are about me returning.
In a college business class I learned that it is easier to keep a customer than to get a new one, or get one to return, and while satisfied customers will tell several other people about their experience, dissatisfied customers will inform seven (or more) about their negative transaction(s).

THE BITTERNESS OF POOR QUALITY REMAINS LONG AFTER THE SWEET TASTE OF LOW PRICE IS GONE !!

    • Ricky

Absolutely, I remember my Mom telling me that when I started serving at her restaurant and just went over that in my business class as well. It is sad that you’ve had such a negative experience with them. I’ve been with them for almost 10 years now and anytime we’ve had an issue, either customer service takes great care of us or a technician comes out in good time and fixed any issue we had.

  23. Lisa

Wish they would do this with Charter. My bill just keeps going up and up. I tried to get a discount every year now and they won’t offer me anything. Going to cancel when I figure out the new way of tv with these stick things lol.

  24. Danielle

I just called Direct TV, lowered my bill from $127 monthly to less than $50! So happy I called. It really works, try it!

  25. Pat

I’ve been doing this for years lolol…always gave me my discounts!

  26. Esdeyna Marquez

Iโ€™v been doing this too for years , #1 Donโ€™t be scare tray !!!! I have Direct TV

  27. Cheryl Pinkney

I been with DTV for 27 years I called last week they only offered me $5 off if I switched to auto pay. I sick of this crazy high bill.

  28. Louise

    Iโ€™m going To call to

  29. Louise

My bill is high I might Leave them

  30. Denise

It works.. it really works. Never knock it til you try it. Key work…’cancel’. DTV doesn’t want to lose business. Thanks so much for sharing this info. Even though we are in political turmoil, I believe there are still kind and considerate people in this world. Have a wonderful holiday !

    • Ricky

Thank you, enjoy your holiday as well. Merry Christmas to you!!

  31. Jill

It worked. I just got a 50 every month for a year thank you to all of you

  32. Jan

Been doing this for years, long time customer. Also do it with my internet

  33. Stephen

Thank you so much for this article. My wife and I were just debating if it would be worth paying an ETF to cancel because $120/mo is just too much. We got the $50/mo off for 12 months offer plus showtime for four months.

Throw in a channel package change and we went down to $53/ month for a year and $101 after that (assuming no discounts next year!)

  34. Victoria

I just seen this and called and yes itโ€™s true. DTV took $40 off my bill for 12 months which brought my bill to $26.99 including HBO and Starz. Also I was able to get Showtime for free for 2 months. Very happy

  35. Willie

I had no luck with this nasty customer service representative and the nerve to tell me it’s because of my pay history been with them close to five years ! I really think it is a racist issue like I told him it’s pathetic

  36. David

Awesome! Just called and used the same comments and got the $50 a month for 12 months! They even updgraded all my equipment foronly a one month extension on my contract. Thanks to everyone and Merry Christmas!

  37. David Schneider

I just called my bill was reduced from 91.00 to 41.00. Took less than 5 minutes.

  38. Julio Zorrilla

Direct TV is owned by AT&T instead of calling Direct TV go in to your local Corporate AT&T store they will be glad to help you save you money on your bill. I have 4Dvr boxes and 186 channels including free HBO for life for $57 a month

  39. Bev

How long is the promotion for?

  40. Rusty Howard

My bill is $56 a month… For the package I have that won’t go any lower…. I don’t get the 3 premium channels , but I get the rest of what I want…. I just wish direct had INTERNET w/o paying over 60 a month on hughs net and at-t is a joke where I live

  41. Tom

Yep it worked! Got $50 off my bill and also gave me 2 months free showtime without having to call to cancel it when the promotion ends. They could have given me 1 more receiver too for $7 month if I needed it! Thatโ€™s probably a good way to get a new one if your not eligible for an upgrade yet!

  42. KAYE

1st of all 2 the ones upset about spelling/grammar errors, get used to it & shut down up already. At&t & directv don’t have to play by the rules that consumers do, plain & simple. Don’t like them, then don’t have a contract with them. Both cell phone & satalitte service could be offered to consumers for pennies on the dollar but never will be. Every 2 seconds a commercial/pop-up add/radio add/snail mail/email from at&t is being ran. If at&t can afford to pay for that much advertising, then you’d think they would stop charging consumers way too much for services

  43. Rachel

U said it Kay & for the college professor making comments regarding spelling and grammar, you and your co-workers are another major drain on our society with your over priced and overrated excuse for higher education. I have watched people spend their adult lives paying for their debt incurred due to college & never ever receive the income that they thought college would provide for them

    • Liz

Good Lord..another uneducated hillbilly …. do some research…college educated people have more chances of doing better in life…a high school education is absolutely useless in today’s market.

  44. Christi Shea Coffee Burkett

Direct tv is full of crap.. ive had nothing but bad experiences with them and im a loyal customer it all started last november when i noticed on my bill i was being charged for hbo wich was supposed to be free for 3 months and also direct tv said they eld give me a 20$discoint and ofcourse that wasnt on there so i called in to get that issue fixed and i got a guy named steven i believe anyway he offered me all the channels and movie channels for life for free and i kept telling him no that i had a bad feeling about his offer hell i even took down his id number because they say all call are recorded anyway ofcourse he didnt write everything he had promised in his notes imagine that i ended up having to pay direct tv alot of money and they wld not honor what the direct tv rep had promised me plus they said they ckd not pull up any of the recorded conversation that so finally i got my old package back well sorta according to direct tv they no longer had my original package i was on the phone for over 5 hours trying to straighten this mess out and ofcourse just my lick my receiver quit working thank god i have there ins. Anyways when the repairman came out he talked me into switching to the jeanie whatever the hell it is and he sworethat me and my daughter wld be able to record seperate shows and her recorded shows wldnt show up on my tv.and he said if we didnt like it i cld switch back to my regular dvr receivers not true.. well finally i got transferred to amanager which he was a royal jerk and very rude to me anyway i never got the offer that was given to me and i also cldnt change back to my normal receivers i wad treated horribly if i wasn’tstuck in there 18 month contract i wld tell DIRECT tv where to shove the manager and satellite and switch to dish .. and if your calls are recorded then why in the hell cant they pull that certain call up or track the emoloyee who literally screwed me over up .. believe me as soon as my contract is up i will be switching to another company ive been a loyal customer for 8 or 9 yrs and this is how they treat there loyal customers .. ever since att bot out direct tv they only care about screwing the customers over its really sadcus i live on ssi and have to use a wheelchair so my happy times are being able to watch tv i pd direct tv over 700 last yr. In a 3 month period which is bullshit so thank u direct /att for taken advantage of a dissabled person and as soon as im oit of contract ya can shove your prices and channels and equipment up yas ass along with the rude ass hispanic manager that made me feel stupid for trusting in direct tv. So thanks alot cant wait to seitch to another company hell i can get sling tv for way under half of what im paying direct tv… i do not recommend direct tv to anyone. And direct used to be my favorite satelite carrier untill all this bs happened last year. And whats the point of getting an employee’s id number and whats the pount of recording the conversations if they supposedly cant pull up the persons id #or conversation. Like i sadi i wldnt recommend direct /att to my dog..

  45. Cecily

We have direct tv now streaming service. It’s only $10 a month if you have the unlimited at&t data plan.

  49. Txteacher

Totally true! Just called and reduced my bill by $40 per month for the next 12 months – no contracts, no commitments. My monthly bill for Direct tv is $18.98 plus taxes and fees. I have been a customer for 7 years – have always had excellent customer service. No complaints here!

  50. Amy

Thank you so much for this tip! I just called and got $75 off my bill. Everyone is right about the customer service going down hill since AT&T bought Direct TV. As soon as my contract is up, I am dropping them!
