As most of you know by now, a huge earthquake and tsunami hit Japan on Friday, March 11th, killing thousands of people. If you are interested in making a donation to help the people of Japan, please check out some of the tips below. Just think of the impact we can all make by coming together and donating!
How can you give back?
Well, first make sure you’re donating to a legit organization. Howard Friedman has written a great article found here with information about legitimate organizations you can donate to. He also encourages you to check out the Charity Navigator prior to donating any money…this navigator allows you to compare and rate charities. The Red Cross currently offers an option to donate a minimum of $10 by heading over here.
If you want a quick and easy way to help the Japan Relief Efforts, head over to the Voskos Greek Yogurt Facebook page and “like” them. Through March 22nd, Voskos Yogurt will donate $1 to a Japan earthquake relief fund for every Facebook “like” to this status. (Thanks, Family Friendly Frugality!)
* Through March 31st, AT&T wireless postpaid customers (i.e. those who receive a monthly bill from the company) will not be charged for international long distance usage from the United States and Puerto Rico to Japan and will not be charged for text messages to Japan originated from a U.S. wireless number. Through April 10th, most Verizon wireless and residential customers can make calls to Japan for free; Verizon postpaid customers in the U.S. will receive free text and multimedia messaging to Japan for the same time period. (Thanks, Ohio Coupon Connection, Linse, and Coupon Pro!)
Let us know what ways you’re helping to make a difference in the comment section. Let’s all try to inspire one another!

Hip2Give: Make a Difference Day (10/23) + Receive a FREE Newman's Own Product for Participating!
This Hip2Save.com Deal was hand-posted on Thursday, September 30th, 2010 at 12:53 pm.
Did you know that October 23rd will mark the largest national day of community service called Make a Difference Day?! Held annually on the fourth Saturday in October, Make A Difference Day is a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. In 2009, 3 million people cared enough about their communities to volunteer on that day, accomplishing thousands of projects in hundreds of towns.
Who takes part in Make A Difference Day?
Anyone– Young and old, individuals and groups… can carry out a volunteer project that helps others. It might be as ambitious as collecting truckloads of clothing for the homeless, or as personal as spending an afternoon helping an elderly neighbor or relative.
How do I get started?
Look around your community. Are people hungry, homeless or ill? Are parks or schools dirty or neglected? No matter where you live, there’s a need nearby. And on Make A Difference Day, millions of Americans are expected to roll up their sleeves to help others. You can act alone or enlist your friends, family and co-workers. Thousands of people across the community can band together. Click here to view project ideas and click here for tips on planning your project. (Consider simply donating personal care and/or food items from your stockpile to a local shelter.)
What do I do after I’ve selected a project?
Tell others what you’re doing and enlist help. Several weeks before the day (which would mean now
), register your plans in the Make A Difference DaytaBank, a national listing of local projects that will be viewed by interested volunteers, other people looking for good project ideas and news media looking for good stories to tell. It will only take a few minutes to register your plans in the DaytaBank. And here’s one of the perks of registering an event/volunteer project: after successfully registering your event, you will be able to register for a coupon good for one FREE Newman’s Own product that will be sent to you in the mail in about 2 weeks!
Who do I contact for more information?
For more information about Make a Difference Day, you can send an email to diffday@usaweekend(dot)com and/or call the Make A Difference Day Hot Line at 1-800-416-3824.
Did you participate in Make a Difference Day last year? If so, share your experience with us.
(Thanks to Savvy Spending for making me aware of this awesome event!)
Hip2Give: Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
This Hip2Save.com Deal was hand-posted on Wednesday, July 28th, 2010 at 3:55 pm.
I posted this Hip2Give topic yesterday on Hip2Save and was saddened and disappointed when I read all of the negative comments that ensued. The point of these Hip2Give posts is to provide inspiration, hope, kindness, empathy etc. I am re-posting this today (with all the comments removed from yesterday) with the hopes that you will only leave a comment if you have something positive or uplifting to share with other readers. Let’s all follow the saying “If you have nothing nice to say, then don’t say anything at all.” Thanks for your cooperation.
Over the last few months, I have received many emails from readers nominating wonderful charities and organizations to be highlighted on an upcoming Hip2Give post. Although it’s always difficult to decide what organization to highlight next; I was so moved by an email and video sent by reader, Sarah, that I knew I had to highlight Sarah’s story today…(you may want to grab a box of Kleenex before watching the video)
Our baby girl was born after 2 miscarriages and is the absolute joy of our lives. When she was 3 weeks old, we got the call that she had Cystic Fibrosis. This is a devastating, life shortening disease. Below is a video that I have made of her story.
**If you can’t see the video, then go here to watch it.
What Is Cystic Fibrosis?
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; and obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food. Today, advances in research and medical treatments have enabled many people with the disease to live into their 30s, 40s and beyond.
Cystic Fibrosis Facts
* About 1,000 new cases of cystic fibrosis are diagnosed each year.
* More than 70% of patients are diagnosed by age two.
* More than 45% of the CF patient population is age 18 or older.
* The predicted median age of survival for a person with CF is more than 37 years.
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
Since 1955, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has been the driving force behind the pursuit of a cure. The mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a nonprofit donor-supported organization, is to assure the development of the means to cure and control cystic fibrosis and to improve the quality of life for those with the disease. It has received a four-star rating for sound fiscal management from Charity Navigator, the largest independent charity evaluator in the United States and is an accredited charity of the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance.
How Can You Help?
* Volunteer with the Foundation and help add more tomorrows to the lives of those living with cystic fibrosis.
* Donate to the Foundation and support efforts to enhance and extend the lives of cystic fibrosis patients and ultimately to find a cure.
* Participate in one or more of the 1,200 fundraising events across the country throughout the year
* Raise awareness about cystic fibrosis and encourage others to join the fight.
* Learn more about these and other opportunities at www.cff.org, or call (800) FIGHT CF.
(Thanks so much to Sarah, Virgina Blue, and the rest of the family for sharing their story of courage, determination and love with us…let’s all raise lots of awareness and money for CF!)
Hip2Give: World Blood Donor Day!
This Hip2Save.com Deal was hand-posted on Monday, June 14th, 2010 at 2:21 pm.
Did you know that today, June 14th, is World Blood Donor Day?!
Did you know that every 2 seconds someone needs a blood donation?!
Did you know that 1 person’s donation can save up to 3 lives?!
Did you know that less than 10% of Americans donate blood each year, but if just 1% more donated, the national blood shortages would disappear for the foreseeable future?!
In honor of this day, America’s Blood Centers (ABC) and Nexcare Bandages are partnering to encourage members of every community to donate blood through GIVE in order to spread awareness about the need for blood donation. Blood donation centers across the country will be joining in this celebration and distributing limited edition Nexcare GIVE bandages (pictured above) to those who donate blood from June 14th-June 20th. You can even snag a sample of 2 FREE limited edition 2010 Nexcare Give bandages by clicking here.
*To find a blood center near you, click here or call 1-888-USBLOOD
So what do you think…are you planning to donate blood today or in the near future?

Hip2Give: Support Animals in Need!
This Hip2Save.com Deal was hand-posted on Tuesday, June 1st, 2010 at 3:04 pm.

We’ve received many emails from Hip2Save readers nominating various animal protection organizations to be featured on Hip2Give. For this reason, we have chosen to highlight the following organizations for this Hip2Give segment…
* The Humane Society of the United States:
The nation’s largest animal protection organization backed by 11 million Americans and seeks a humane and sustainable world for all animals
* The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA):
The ASPCA works to rescue animals from abuse, pass humane laws and share resources with shelters nationwide.
* American Humane:
Focuses on preventing cruelty, neglect and exploitation of animals and assuring that their interests and well-being are fully, effectively and humanely guaranteed by an aware and caring society.
(If you would like to highlight other animal organizations, please mention them in the comment section below.)
In addition to donating money, many of these organizations will gladly accept unopened pet food and other pet-related products (call your local organizations to find out what sort of donations they are accepting at this time). How many of you have stacks of pet coupons that go unused…well, how about taking those coupons to your local food/drug stores where you should be able to find some great deals on pet-related items. Also, be sure to watch the Follow You Monday video found here (filmed in October 2009) which shows how I was able to put my pet coupons to use and check out this email below from Hip2Save reader, Amber…
My name is Amber S. and I live in Maine…I am writing to you because I wanted to share a project I have been working on for a few weeks now. In one of your entries you posted a sweet deal on Tidy Cats non-clumping litter. I do not use this kind of litter but it was such a good deal I thought “why not donate it?” So I went to my local humane society’s website to check if they took donations. Little did I know that they have a whole page just called their “wish list” with everything from dog foods and blankets to office supplies and toys. So I decided to start my own donation box and kept religiously reading your site for any deals. A lot of your deals were for dogs (which I do not have) but the B1G1 coupons were such a steal I got quite a bit of dog food and treats and tons of cat litter. I have attached a picture of what I will be donating today and here is a detailed list of what I purchased:
Tidy Cats Non-Clumping Litter 3 at $1.77 Each = $5.31
-3 $1/1 Tidy Cats Litter from the 5/2 SS
Pedigree Plus Dog Food 4 at $0.87 Each = $3.48
-2 B1G1 Free Pedigree Plus
Purina Whiska Lickens Soft Cat Treats 2 at $0.89 each = $1.78
-1 $1/1 Purina Cat treat from the 5/2 SS (took off $0.89)
Chef Michael Dog Food 2 at .80 each = $1.60
(I just found my B1G1 coupon from the 5/16 RP that they forgot to take off…but I’m not going to worry about it too much)
Pedigree Breath Buster at $3.25 and Pedigree Denta Stix at $3.19 = $6.44
- $2/1 Denta Stix from the 4/25 RP
- $3.25 (Buy one Denta Stix Get Pedigree Breath Buster Free from the 5/23 RP)
Whiskas Wet Cat food 2 at .52 each = $1.04
-1 B1G1 Whiskas Cat Food from the 4/25 RP
Total Before Coupons = $19.65
Total After Coupons = $8.25
Total Savings = $11.40 or 59% savings

I know this isn’t a very big order but this is just an example of how much money you can save just by using coupons and I know that the Human Society will appreciate the donation. I would encourage others to donate items that they either get for free or very cheap. A lot of these items I cannot use myself but because the coupons brought the items down so much, why not spend a little to give a lot?
Hip2Give: Help Tennessee Flood Victims!
This Hip2Save.com Deal was hand-posted on Wednesday, May 5th, 2010 at 12:25 pm.
*Did you know that at least 29 people have been killed in Tennessee, Mississippi and Kentucky by either floodwaters or tornadoes in the last few days?
*Did you know that water submerged parts of the Grand Ole Opry House, considered by many to be the heart of country music, and the nearby Opryland Hotel could be closed for up to six months?
*Did you know Governor Bredesen declared 52 of Tennessee’s 95 counties disaster areas after finishing an aerial tour from Nashville to western Tennessee during which he saw flooding so extensive that treetops looked like islands?

(Thanks to MSNBC and the Associated Press for the information and picture above)
Wow! I knew about the recent flooding in Tennessee; however, I had NO idea of the extent of the devastation. Please read an email from a Hip2Save reader who shares her thoughts on this disaster…
This isn’t a deal, but a request, no a plea. I don’t know if you know about the devastation in Nashville and Middle Tennessee, but we are in dire straits right now and there has been very little national media coverage about it. Haiti was worldwide news. Katrina was worldwide news, but no one is noticing that Nashville is going down. Obama has just declared Nashville a disaster area. Our downtown is partially underwater and out of power until Friday at the soonest. Our biggest Hotel/Convention center (that employs 3000+ people) is underwater and possibly down until CHRISTMAS! Shelters are at capacity and there are people unaccounted for.
If couponers ever come together to support their fellow man, Nashville would appreciate the help now. Cash donations can be made to the Red Cross, by calling or texting REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 to disaster relief.
If you’re local, CoC disaster relief could use help preparing boxes of food for flood victims. For more info call 833-0395. Donations of cleaning supplies, toiletries and clothing are being asked for and I KNOW we have those things in droves!
Facebook is a great place to find info to help out.
If you would like to help out, here are some things that you can do…
*Visit www.nashvilleredcross.org and click DONATE to make an online gift.
*Mail a check to the Nashville Area Red Cross: 2201 Charlotte Avenue, Nashville, TN 37203.
*Call (615) 250-4300 to make a donation by phone.
*Text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation on your mobile phone.
*Visit Hands on Nashville to donate and/or view current volunteer needs.
*Donate food/money to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee (The most needed list includes canned vegetables, canned fruits, canned meats, canned/dried beans, rice, macaroni & cheese/pasta, and peanut butter).
*Make a donation via The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.
*Make a donation to Brown Dog Foundation, Inc (this program offers up to $300 to stabilize and/or treat pets for injuries sustained as a result of the crisis).
*If you have been personally affected by the flood, check out Flood Help in Nashville for sources of free help and links to other resources.
(Thanks, IPreferPublix for sharing some donation tips and information about the disaster!)
Just think, I have OVER 20,000 email subscribers. If every one of those subscribers donates just $1, that’s over $20,000! We CAN make a difference!
