Welcome to Week #4 (the final week) of the Hip2Save Holiday Challenge! Hopefully, you have a freezer full of delicious meals from Week #1 and Week #2. In addition, I hope you have been able to check several Christmas gifts off your list thanks to your home-made creations from Week #3. The final challenge for this week focuses on something a little different. This week’s challenge is all about paying it forward and the powerful impact that random acts of kindness can have on your own life and the lives of those around you.

* Hold a garage sale and give the proceeds to an organization who helps others

Albertsons Coupon Policy
It is always important to familiarize yourself with a store’s coupon policy. Here is a quick breakdown of Albertson’s Coupon policy. Albertsons will accept the following coupons…

(1) Manufacturer Coupons

(2) Store Coupons: These are discounts offered by Albertson’s directly for purchases within their store. Keep in mind that some store coupons will only be valid with your Preferred Card.

(3) Internet Coupons: Keep in mind that Albertsons will NOT accept internet coupons for any item offered free, any coupon redeemable for excess of $5, or any coupon where the UPC bar code is either absent or unreadable.

(4) Catalina Checkout Coupons/Rebates printed from an Albertsons store: Keep in mind that Albertsons does NOT accept Catalina coupons from competitors.

(5) “Twice the Value” Coupons (aka Doublers): Doublers can be used to “double” the value of any manufacturer coupon up to $1 in value. For instance, if you have a 99¢ manufacturer coupon, you can use the doubler coupon to save $1.98 (double the value of the 99¢ coupon). “Twice the Value” coupons are typically only available to be used during certain days and are not available every week (and sadly, they were not available during this filmed shopping trip ). They are usually found in the Sunday paper and/or in the store ad.

Consider adding a restaurant coupon (I chose a B1G1 entree coupon that I recently received in the mail from Ruby Tuesdays) and/or a Restaurant.com certificate.

Need some tips on freezing bread, muffins and pancakes? Check out these tips and tricks below…

* Allow breads to cool completely before placing them in the freezer.

* Be sure to press out as much excess air from the bag.

* If you are planning to leave your bread in the freezer longer than a month or two, wrap the bread in heavy duty aluminum and then place it in a plastic bag (you can then leave the bread in the freezer for up to 4 months).

* When you are ready to use the bread, take it out of the freezer and allow it to thaw on the counter at room temperature (this usually takes about 3 hours).

* Stack pancakes between sheets of wax paper and slide them all into a plastic bag for freezing (consider using an old bread/bagel bag versus a new Ziploc bag). Store them in the freezer for up to 3 months. When you are ready to use them, take them directly from the freezer to a preheated oven and bake 2-3 minutes.

* Place trays of muffins in the freezer until firm and then transfer them to a Ziploc bag for freezing. Muffins can be stored in the freezer from 6 to 12 months. Muffin batter can be frozen right in the tins for up to 3 weeks for later baking.

* Consider flash freezing muffins (i.e. place individual muffins on a tray in the freezer, freeze them until they are firm and then store them in more space-efficient freezer bag).

* Always label bags with the date.

Bath & Body Works: Go here to print a coupon valid for a FREE Signature Collection Travel Size Item with ANY purchase (up to a $5 value)! This coupon is valid thru September 22nd. Remember, this coupon states ANY item, so look for an inexpensive product. Think clearance, a small hand sanitizer, nail file or any other product priced around $1-$2! In the video, Piper picked out anti-bacterial hand gel for a $1 and then we snagged our free travel-size product for free with the coupon!

Auntie Anne’s: Sign up for Pretzel Perks and get a different coupon every month plus snag a Buy 1 Get 1 Free pretzel coupon when you first register. I used this coupon in the video to snag 2 delicious pretzels for $2.79!

Captain D’s Seafood Kitchen: Join the D’s club and you will snag a welcome email with a coupon good for a FREE Fish & Fries or a FREE Chicken & Fries, just for joining! Plus, you’ll receive a coupon for one of 3 select free dinners of $5 off any dinner or platter on your birthday. In the video, I used the welcome coupon to snag FREE Fish & Fries for lunch…and it literally was free. I did not even pay tax!

* Sign up for Swagbucks! You can earn Swagbucks by searching the web, shopping at your favorite retailers, and by engaging in other activities like phone recycling, submitting polls, and completing special offers. You can then trade in your Swagbucks for cash or gift cards like the Starbucks card I used to score FREE coffee in the video!

* Be on the lookout for spare change! We spotted 2 quarters on the ground by the shopping carts at Kmart which meant a FREE Merry Go Round ride for Piper.

Thanks to Rite Aid, I was able to get permission to film at my local Jacksonville, North Carolina Rite Aid. The video below highlights all the great deals that I was able to score (keep in mind that this video was filmed back in August, so the deals are not available anymore) and also shows how the +Up Rewards program works. In addition to the video, please read through the outline below which will help you to become a very “Hip” Rite Aid shopper (this outline will be especially helpful for new couponers or those of you who have not yet shopped at Rite Aid)!

(1) Head over to Hip2Save and check out the weekly Rite Aid store deals. These deals highlight all the current Single Check Rebates, +Up Reward items, and sale items paired up with manufacturer coupons, Rite Aid in-ad coupons, Video Values coupons, and total purchase coupons (if applicable). Click on the print icon (located to the right of the post title) for the Rite Aid weekly deals and you can print out your own personalized list to take with you into the store. Pay special notice to the deals that I have highlighted in red as these are my favorite deals for the week.

(2) Get to know the Rite Aid Video Values program. This program allows you to watch a quick video advertisement (usually 30 seconds-several minutes) and then be rewarded with a coupon for the advertised product. These Video Values coupons are actually Rite Aid store coupons and CAN be stacked with manufacturer’s coupons! Keep in mind that your coupons can only be printed once. To print coupons, go to the My Rewards tab, check the box of the coupon(s) you want to print, and then click the print coupons button. When you have watched 20 video credits, you will earn a bonus coupon of $4 off any purchase of $20 or more (this bonus coupon is limited to one per customer per month).One of the best perks about the Video Values coupons is that they typically do not expire until the end of the following month AND they do not have to be printed immediately. For this reason, I recommend that you watch all of the available Video Values programs each month… you will then have access to all the coupons in the My Rewards tab, so that you can print them at a later date if you need them to snag a great deal.

(3) Get to know the Single Check Rebate program. This program allows you to buy participating Single check Rebate products, then submit your receipts online and get a check in the mail. Each month, Rite Aid will release a new rebate booklet in-stores advertising all the current Single Check Rebate items; you can also go here and browse through the rebate offers online. Keep in mind that some Single Check Rebates are only valid for one week, while others may be offered for the whole month. Make sure to check the dates closely for each participating Single Check Rebate item.

As you make purchases throughout each month, you can save your receipts and enter them online all at once at the end of the rebate program period (typically this is the end of the month). If you prefer, you can enter your individual receipts each time you make a purchase throughout the month (there is no limit to the number of receipts you can enter); I prefer this option as there is less of a chance that I will lose the receipt(s) or forget to enter it.  At the end of the month, request your rebate by clicking the request rebate button. Do NOT click the “request rebate” button if you are planning on purchasing more Single Check Rebate items before the rebate program period has ended as Rite Aid ONLY allows one submission per household.

(4) Become a Wellness + Rewards member…it’s FREE and necessary to be a savvy Rite Aid shopper! You’ll earn points each time you shop that will enable you to snag special discount passes and more. Be sure that the cashier scans your Wellness + card prior to you checking out (if you forget your card, just give them your phone number).

(5) Get to know the +Up Rewards program exclusively available to Wellness + Rewards Members. Each week, you can browse the Rite Aid weekly ad for featured +Up Rewards products (or just check out the weekly deals at Hip2Save). Buy these products using your Wellness + card and you’ll receive a +UP Reward which consists of a coupon or a number of coupons that print at the bottom of your receipt and can be used on your NEXT purchase like cash. Each advertised +UP Reward is limited to 1 per wellness card (unless otherwise stated). And here’s the best part… there is no limit to the number of +Up Rewards redeemed in a single transaction as long as the pretax total is greater than the combined value of the +UP Rewards.

(6) Read through the Rite Aid corporate coupon policy. I always recommend that you print a copy of this policy and bring it with you while you shop. If any issues should arise, this coupon policy should definitely help clear things up!

You then drive to another Walgreens down the road, buy the same items, and are able to complete the SAME transactions that you were not able to do at the previous Walgreens. How frustrating is that?! I cannot stand the fact that we all receive different/conflicting information from Walgreens employees…this absolutely drives me crazy!

This craziness is what led to the video below. I was determined to find out what sort of response I would receive when the same 5 questions were asked to 4 different Walgreens store managers across the country AND the Walgreens Corporate office. So watch the video to see what I discovered…

Like every good couponer, I wanted to know the specific coupon policy for each dollar store so several days before my shopping adventure, I emailed these stores to find their coupon policies (see below for the results). If you are a frequent dollar store shopper or browser, it is probably worth joining their electronic newsletters so that you can receive the latest coupons, promotions, etc. To join the Dollar General Savings Zone, click here; to sign for Dollar Tree emails, click here; to join Family Dollar Savings program click here and then enter your email in the box in the top right corner that says “Family Savings.”

Dollar General’s Coupon Policy (taken directly from the email I received):

• Dollar General is pleased to accept manufacturer coupons at any of our more than 8,100 stores. If you have five coupons for five products, you may use them in one transaction unless the coupon states otherwise. If the coupon states that it is good for any product, you may use the coupon for any product even if it is not pictured, unless the coupon states otherwise.

• You may use a Dollar General coupon along with a Manufacturer’s coupon for the same item, as long as neither coupon states otherwise.

Christmas traditions can be fun and memorable for families. One tradition, which our family and friends enjoyed, was our annual family Christmas postcard inspired by our three daughters. Each girl drew her own holiday picture then signed it and added her age. I then reduced the size of the pictures so that all three drawings would fit on a postcard. I added a holiday message around the drawings to further personalize the card and to help tie the drawings together. We used red or green card stock for the postcards – two to a page. Copying costs were relatively inexpensive, and postcard stamps much cheaper than regular postage. These cards have become keepsakes for our family. My children are now grown and have their own little ones. My hope is that they might consider keeping this tradition alive.

Ever wonder what do with the kiddos when it is freezing outside and you don’t want to spend any money? I discovered ice ornaments in the December/January 2010 issue of Disney’s Family Fun Magazine. My 3 year old son and I filled a 9×13 glass pan with water and red food coloring. We then placed several cookie cutters inside the pan and strung a piece of ribbon through each cookie cutter. We placed the pan outside and within hours (thanks to our zero degree weather!!) we had ice ornaments. We ran some warm water over the frozen ornaments; and we were then able to pry out each individual cookie cutter and basically pop out the ice from each cutter. We tied the ribbon into loops and hung each ornament on an outside tree for everyone to enjoy until the weather warms up.

Today I’m going to discuss mall shopping! It’s the holiday season and that means shopping is usually on every ones mind. I thought a timely video topic would be on how to score bargains at the mall. I’m sure when most of you think of the mall, you don’t always think about the savings, but there are actually lots of deals to be had! Don’t believe me? Alright, so what’s the video about? Well, while traveling to the Dominican Republic I got to test out this awesome new product called DryCASE! The DryCASE is a flexible, crystal clear waterproof bag that allows complete use of your phone or camera while keeping it dry and clean. All you have to do is pump out all the air with the small little hand pump (provided) and the bag will vacuum seal around the contents and become completely waterproof! I was a little skeptical and worried my Flip Video Camera would not stay dry… BUT I was completely wrong! Not only did it stay dry, but the picture (as you’ll see) was very clear!

The DryCASE also features a 3 way headphone jack which allows you to safely listen to music or even take calls. You can also here and talk through the DryCASE as long as a little air is left in, it will still be waterproof and can be sealed, there just needs to be a little bit of air for sound waves to travel! Plus, the DryCASE includes a bandneoprene armband which can be used to attach the product to your arm or to the console or a boat or anything else. This armband can easily be removed too!

The first step to take, before you can even begin shopping, is to either go to CVS or online here and fill out the Extra Care membership form. The benefit of going in the store is you will be able to get the card immediately, rather then having to wait two weeks for it to come in the mail.

Once you have your Extra Care card you’ll be able to start earning Extra Care Bucks! Extra Care Bucks (ECB) are CVS rewards that will give you money back to spend in the store however you please. There are a couple of different ways you can earn Extra Care Bucks:

First, you will earn 2% cash back on every purchase in store and online. Every three months these Extra Bucks will print out at the end of your receipt. You can also earn one Extra Care buck for every two prescriptions purchased in the store or online.

… And finally, the main way to earn Extra Care Bucks is by flipping through the weekly ad. In the ad you will find products advertised that will generate Extra Care Bucks when purchased. The best part is that you can also use manufacturer coupons and/or CVS coupons to really lower your out of pocket expense. They also often have promotions where a product is FREE after Extra Care Bucks– meaning if you purchase something for $3.99, you will get back $3.99 in Extra Care Bucks. Plus, you can use coupons on these type of items to “make money” after Extra Care bucks!

After you get one or two Extra Care Bucks you can start “rolling” them. This basically means that you’ll be able to use the Extra Care Bucks you’ve already earned to pay for new Extra Care Buck Deals. If you keep doing this week after week you’ll spend very little out of pocket… possibly only $1-$2 per transaction!

Finally, my favorite part about CVS shopping, is that they often have money off store coupons available. Currently, you can print a $5 off $30 coupon and $5 off $20 coupon. Use these coupons BEFORE your manufacturer and CVS coupons to really sweeten all the Extra Care Buck Deals and sale items!

Target can be a great store to shop at if you know what you’re doing and with that I mean–know how to use your coupons correctly, know what to look for while shopping and know that it’s OK to stick up for yourself! Hopefully this video will show you how to become a confident and fearless Target shopper!:)

Before watching the video, you may want to read through these Target tips! I do go over most of this in the video, but I also wanted to write some of this down for those of you that may have a hard time hearing me.

Target Tips:

• Always bring the Target corporate coupon policy with you when shopping! If you have any problems with your coupons being accepted, just hand over their coupon policy. This will most likely resolve the issues!

• Target also has in-store coupons that you can pair up with manufacturer coupons for even more savings! You can print these from the Target site or from here or from the Target kiosk in-stores (I show you how to do this in the video).

• Make sure to always hand over all your manufacturer coupons first–before Target store coupons. This will help with less coupon beepage–which us couponers try to avoid at all costs!:)

• When shopping keep your eyes peeled for red clearance stickers, peelie and tearpad coupons, price cuts and other discounts! Usually combining these type of sales with coupons will result in some sweet deals!

• Another promotion to look for while shopping and in the weekly ads are Target Gift Card deals! These gift card promotions may be weekly, monthly or even longer than that. You can find out about these by either flipping through the weekly ad (some are not advertised) or looking for signs in-stores! One gift card promotion that is currently running is on Kellogg’s FiberPlus Antioxidant Bars–buy 4 boxes and get a $5 Target gift card! All you need to do is purchase 4 boxes, use coupons if you have any, and after all 4 boxes have scanned, the cash register will alert the cashier to hand you a $5 Target gift card. You won’t be able to use it on that purchase, but you can use the gift card on future purchases. Another great thing, is that unlike Register Rewards, you can keep “rolling” the same gift card deals over and over again! This helps to lower your out of pocket expense!

• Finally, remember that you are doing nothing wrong! If you get a grouchy cashier, just ignore them and smile… you’re obviously in a better place and they most likely want to be where you are!:)

Q&A

1. Where did you get your purse & what is the price approximately?

I actually found my purse at Target on clearance for just $13! Of course the purse may not be available anymore since I purchased it a few months ago. However, I did notice that Target has other similar purses available, so you may still want to look and see what you can find. Another great place to snag inexpensive purses–T.J. Maxx and Marshall’s!

2. Do you clip ALL coupons and bring ALL to the store – or do you just clip what you know you will use? … and another reader asked: Do you clip every coupon in hopes of a great deal or do you clip only the things you know you’ll use?

To answer both questions– NO, I do not clip all the coupons and I honestly don’t recommend doing so. When I first started couponing, I got so excited about savings and was trying to clip every single coupon. Well, shortly after I got way too overwhelmed and realized that clipping all the coupon was just not worth my time. Lots of the coupons were just sitting in my binder not getting used and well, what’s the point of that?

When clipping my coupons I ask myself 2 questions: Does my family use this products? If I can get this product FREE would I be able to use it or Donate it? If I answer no to both questions, I do NOT clip the coupon.

3. Ok so dumb question maybe, but do you post the dates related to the q and do you put that on the pages, so you know where they came from? I am trying the write the date on the front but that is hard to track I am finding. Just wondering how to put all the info together… and another reader asked: Do you date you coupons or have some sort of list???

First, there is NO dumb question!:) Second, I do not write the dates related to the coupons. Since I clip all the coupons I’m going to use, I found you just don’t need to do this. For example, when I’m getting my coupons ready to shop at Walgreens, I don’t need to look at what insert the coupon was found in. Instead, I just flip to the category in my binder that the coupon would be found in. It’s a very simple and quick process.

4. How do you stay on top of expiration dates in the binder? Or do you not care? I’d like to file them by specific product in a binder, but what if a coupon is about to expire?

When I put the coupons in my baseball card inserts I always make sure the expiration date is showing. That way it’s visually easy to see when a coupon is expired. Plus, every Sunday (while watching TV) I flip through each page of my binder and take out the expired coupons. It honestly doesn’t take me more than 15 minutes.

5. Do you pay full price on clothes and stuff for your house?… and another reader asked: Where do you shop? I love your sweater and purse!!

I NEVER pay full price for anything!:) I absolutely LOVE Marshall’s, T.J Maxx, Ross and thrift stores. Also, if there are ever any great mall store coupons, I will use those! It’s amazing what kind of deals you can score on clothes and shoes when you give yourself a little time to browse around!

6. Does each coupon get its own little pocket?

No–explanation: each “Like” product coupon goes in the same pocket. For example, if I have 5 of the same Yoplait yogurt coupons they’ll each go in the same pocket together. Also, if I have 5 Yoplait coupons that expire sooner and 5 that expire later, I’ll still put them in the same pocket. I will just put the ones that are going to expire later behind the ones that are going to expire first.

7. Collin, I’m also a military wife and have a question for you about military coupons. Do you keep yours separate, in another binder, or just in another section? I don’t like to combine them with “civilian” coupons as that can get confusing. There are enough to make a small binder but didn’t know if it’s worth it. Any suggestions?

I do separate Military coupons and any other store coupons (like Target and CVS). I don’t make a separate binder, but I do have envelopes for each set of store coupons. In my opinion, this makes it much easier and less time to consuming to organize those.

This is a 2 part video. The first part will be all about my favorite coupon organization method–the binder. The second part will be showing how I clip my coupons to save time. Plus, I’ll take you into Walmart and give you an idea of how much it will cost to make your own coupon binder.

Oh and I just want to quickly tell you why I don’t use a zippered binder (this part accidentally got cut out of the video). I first started out with a zippered binder, but I built up a nice coupon stash quite fast and was no longer able to zip it. To me the whole point of a zippered binder is to zip it, so your coupons don’t fall out. Plus, it was so bulky and very difficult to put in my purse. I finally realized that for me anyway, it made way more sense to just buy a normal binder. It fits in my purse nicely–which I show in the video and I’m able to pull out coupons without having to actually take the binder out of my purse. It works great!
