Have you ever wondered if you’re paying too much for your groceries or if you’re really getting the best deal? Or have you wondered exactly what you should be paying for items such as meat, fresh produce, diapers, or other grocery items?

Well if you’re new around here, you may not be aware that I have created a spreadsheet with “Hip” prices for some of the most common grocery, food, household, and other items. AND, since I first posted this spreadsheet back in 2012, I recently updated the spreadsheet to better reflect today’s prices! 🙂

To get an idea of national average prices, I sent four of my sidekicks (from 4 different states) to Walmart to get the most inexpensive prices for the most common grocery, food, household, and other items. Keep in mind you’ll see two columns in the spreadsheet with the average Walmart prices from those 4 states AND my rock bottom stock up prices…the price you’ll pay after sales and coupons.

Just click on this link or on the image below to print or save the PDF file to your computer! Or, if you’d rather, you can go here and save the Price Points document to your computer and edit/change the prices based on your region!

Keep in mind that these prices will vary greatly based on your region, but should be a general indicator of good prices for most areas. This would be a great document to print, put in plastic sleeves, and place in your coupon binder so you can glance at it while shopping. 🙂

Also, you can find several helpful spreadsheets at all times on the right-hand sidebar of the Hip2Save home page. Enjoy!

* Now it’s your turn… what are your personal price points for grocery items? How do you save on items, such as meat, produce, and other grocery products that are hard to find coupons for?

I try to buy health/beauty/ dry foods on sale with coupons. Get samples for deodorants sent to me when i can. That way it balances out those perisable items that i cant always get on sale. I do try to shop for those at kroger (they send me loyality coupons that help with those things) stock up on managers specials and freeze them( i have a small freezer so nothing gets to old)

This list makes me feel so much better! I try to just shop the “big sale” products from my grocery store circular and adjust my weeks menus around it- but we’re in Boston metro area and prices are high for everything. I know I see a difference in our budget, but I always feel guilty that I can be doing better when I see the insanely cheap prices for less urban areas. When I see this, I realize I am still getting some good deals!

  2. SK

Thank you for this list, you are truely ‘the best’.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re so welcome! 🙂

  3. FosterMom

We live in New York so all our prices are at least a dollar more. We get a good deal on vegetables and fruits from the green carts though.

  4. Le

This is awesome! I live in canada but live close to the border so I shop both canada and US sales, and I’ve always kept a little list of best possible prices cause it gets so confusing sometimes.

    • shalini

      Hi,
Is there a savings/deals website for Canada that you know of? TIA

      • Le

Mrs. January and Redflagdeals. Neither is as awesome of a community as Hip2Save but they both list coupon match ups and good sales 🙂 I’m sure there’s more but those are the two I look at sometimes

    • Mel

Since you shop both Canadian & US sales, I wonder if you ever find Canadian prices cheaper on anything. I have family in Canada, and am always shocked at the high prices. It seems to me that absolutely everything is higher there.

  5. Susie

I have tried creating a list for myself and I keep forgetting to update it. This is such a great list. Thanks so much!!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Enjoy! 🙂

  6. Bambing

Thank you. The average prices in this list are our sale price/stock up price but at least now I know I am not losing my mind in thinking that I live in one of the most expensive areas of the country (San Francisco/ Bay Area, California), 😉

    • mike

Agree. Collin what states were used for this list?
It’s a sad day when I buy anything not on sale or close-out, but your list wants me to leave this state.

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

The states were TX, ID, FL, and CO.

    • Laura

Agreed! Some of the average prices on the list are my deal prices! I’m in Cali too, Central Valley

  7. Sheila

You are one busy lady/team of ladies! Thanks so much for all you do!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re so welcome, Sheila!

  8. Anna

Thank you so much! I was JUST hoping for an updated spreadsheet!!!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re most welcome, Anna!

  9. sherrycc

Wow this is truly an eye opener! For some items on the list, my “stock up price” is even higher than the average price on the list… For me its just so hard to get the perishable items on sale. This is probably my biggest concern at the moment.

  10. marian

Thank you so much for the list! I was making a grocery price list a few days ago because I’ll be moving to Hawaii in a few months and I want to know the difference of prices. I’m dreading to do any shopping there because I heard it’s super expensive.

    • brieanna

A friend of mine just came back from Hawaii and she said that a carton of eggs was almost $5.00 . yikes!!!!! hope you find some good deals there. I think everything is higher there.

    • Adriana

It is super expensive here in Hawaii use lots of coupons when you can and get a costco or sams club card. costco milk is around $ 5.00 anywhere else is most of the time 6 or 7 dollars. get all the sales flyers to see where you can get the best deals on sale.

  11. shalini

Collin, do you have a similar spreadsheet for organic/ natural products? I have seen you use them in your videos. TIA

    • Pixiepoe

I need the same type of list 🙂

      • L

        Me too! (Three and four)

    • Erin

I would love that too, as I’m recently trying to buy more organic for my family!!

  12. Erika

What would be a good price point for the bigger bottles of laundry detergent (96ish loads) or the dishwasher tablets? I’m kind of new to the coupon ing thing and am not picky about brands!

    • Ashley57

My laundry detergent stock up price is 3 cents per load, although I normally tend to get enough for free through various promotions. I also try to get dishwasher detergent for free only through rebates and such. I would look into switching away from the tablets, they are much pricier that the powder or liquid.

      • Inna

Where do you find the promotions and rebates to get enough free laundry and dishwasher detergent? I don’t see too many promos or rebates for these items.

    • Erika

Thanks. Yeah we use liquid now but it’s causing buildup on the inside of the dishwasher. The manual suggests using the tablets, so I thought I’d give it a shot.

    • shopper

For dishwasher: look at finish ‘s website, they have a few money back rebates if you aren’t satisfied, fill out form with why.

Cascade had a try free rebate for their pacs, but ended last year.

Target Cartwheel usually has 5% off their brand of dishwasher products.

Laundry, sales and coupons can lead to almost and/or free.

  13. breadhead

Nice work! I go grocery shopping every Sunday at Walmart, but all of the produce at Walmart in my area are more expensive than the other super markets. So, I do price match all the time.

  14. L

I learn to know when they mark meat down at Kroger and Giant Eagle. Many times I can get Natural Organic Chicken or Even Bison for 50% off or more. And yoh can freeze it! We have been doing this for over a year and never had a bad piece of meat. I cant go back to regular chicken anymore. It has a bleach smell I cant stand. Also Giant Eagle and IGA have a 5 for $19.99. You pick five $5 meat items and they mark it down to $19.99.

  15. Jenn

Thanks, this list is a great resource!! I do almost all of my shopping at Aldi. This list makes me happy because it shows me I’m paying the best price for most of my staple items. That said, it also shows me what sale prices are worth chasing at the “regular” grocery store. Deal shopping just got even better!! 😊

    • Mrs. Waller

I love Aldi! I was also very happy when they added organic produce and other organic items!

  16. Angela

Unfortunately the only time I really save on meat is when they mark them down but I do find that you can save by buying family packs and freezing it in portions.

  17. shirley

Wish the stock up price here in MO is that low too. I have not seen gallon milk $1.99 for a long time. Over $4 all the time.

    • Caitlin

Same here in New Orleans. All stores are $4.50ish for a gallon. I buy milk only from Costco now because they are the only place with prices under $3!

    • JA

PA too. Although my Big Lots put in coolers and now has milk for $3.75, which is .25-.50 cheaper than anywhere else. It’s just not that convenient to get there.

  18. karen

how many diapers are in those jumbo packs? what’s a good per diaper price? thx

    • Erika

Jumbo packs depend on the size. 36 for newborn size but like 28 for size 4. If you’re paying less than .$18/diaper I say it’s a good deal, but stock up at like $.10 or $.11 per diaper.

  19. Renee

Maybe I’m missing something, but how does this list tell me what I “should” be paying? As far as produce, were the prices noted during the time the item was in season or are these off season prices?

  20. Beth

Wish I could find that low price in my area!

  21. MomC

This is so helpful as a new couponer. I really tried to use coupons as much as possible to save money. This will help me have an idea to save more. Thanks Collin and to all your sidekicks for all your efforts. =)

  22. Laura

I recently created a UNIT (per oz, lb, tablet or each) price point of my usual stock items. I INCLUDE TAX in the unit price because some stores discount their STORE coupons before tax. For example, no tax applied to Target cartwheel discount, Target store coupons, 5% Red Card, even 5c bag credit, however manufacturer’s coupon and any gift cards earned from the purchase are taxed. Costco, on the other hand, applies tax first then deducts the instant rebate or Costco coupon. Maybe just a slight difference, but when I stock up, I like to know a solid buy price. Of course, I have to do a quick math to take out the tax from the unit price point list, but that’s easy. For example, our tax is 4.5% so I multiply the unit price by .955, then multiply by the number of units to get the package price.

    • Anna

      Nice!! You rock.

  23. Stephanie

This is SO awesome! Thank you, Collin!

  24. Sarah

I’ve been sooo wanting something like this! It’s a great starting point ! Thanks!

  25. Lynnette

Thanks for the help! Any chance any of these prices are from Southern CA?! Groceries here are so pricey 😬

  26. Yolanda

Off the subject..does anyone know where I can purchase black round table cloths at a reasonable price? Renting is expensive and I need to cut my cost. Thanks!

    • Anna

Oriental Trading Co. I don’t know if they have real cloth or if that is what you need.. Check their website.

      • Yolanda

        Thanks!

    • Brandy

Try http://www.linentablecloth.com . I’ve gotten their napkins and 6′ oval-ish tablecloths for trade shows and the quality is great and so is the price! I think they sell on Amazon as well.

      • Yolanda

        Thanks!

  27. Heather C

I’m in CA, so I know that practically EVERYTHING will be more expensive 😕. Oh well- we’re not buried in snow!

Newbies to coupons you will learn what a good price is in your area after you coupon for a few months. For example in my area my egg stock-up price is .99 lower than the list, but 1.00 for deodorant higher than the list.

I do use the list for items I don’t buy much or as a reference point when I am unsure of the price.

I used to feel bad that I couldn’t get stuff as cheap or free, but the stores in my area are limited, they don’t have double coupons and have lots of restrictions. I can’t change that, I just have to do the best I can and feel good about it. Don’t be so hard on yourselves. Any little bit helps!

  30. Michelle

I can’t figure out how to change the zip on coupons.com. Did they change something? Any tips?

  35. Karen

Is there an updated version of this “Grocery Price Points” list? Current list is close to 10 years old.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Hi Karen! We don’t currently have an updated list available; however, I’ve passed your suggestion along to the team. ❤️
