Have read many of his books and listened to teach as well. Our Sunday School class went through his series years ago when my husband and I were newly married. We have stuck with the basic principles throughout the years. We do have a mortgage but it isn’t huge (and we went well under what they said we could afford – plus we have paid extra on it and it will be paid off in just five more years) Of course our property taxes here in NJ have far exceeded our mortgage for quite some time (Dave doesn’t count on you paying crazy NJ taxes! LOL – no way around that …..) We have always kept an emergency fund, have put a good amount into retirement, have never had credit card debt, and have saved for each of our three boys future college expenses. We do use credit cards all the time and have found them to be useful tools. They are paid in full each month and we earn airline miles (which are put to use each year) and Disney points (have paid for all our food on Disney trips) I think this is a good deal and he is worth reading but you don’t have to exactly follow everything he says to live stress free! 🙂
Your post about property taxes brings up a good point. If the point of taking Dave Ramsey classes and reading his materials is to make oneself financially bulletproof, well, it just isn’t going to happen.
Luckily our property taxes remain very, very low. I’d wager that my house note plus my taxes is less than your monthly tax payment, but that could change at any time~any time a local government wishes to raise taxes for services, that is.
Seems every year we see increases in items we can NEVER pay off-health insurance, prescription costs, etc etc.
College tuition at state schools goes up double digits each year. And the way the economy is, a person better have a full year of living expenses saved up in order to find a comparable job.
Sorry to be negative, but I have very well-off friends who are having to eat into their savings and retirement plans because they are finding it near impossible to find employment after losing jobs they have had for more than 20 years.
No, it’s not about being bullet-proof, 🙂 it’s about having a long-term plan and knowing where your money is going–or,rather telling your money where to go and living by principles. It’s by no means a get-rich quick scheme, it’s hard work, it’s about choices. But in doing all that, you are able to ward off Murphy (murhpy’s law) because you will be better prepared for emergencies.
You might want to recommend “48 Days to the Work You Love” by Dan Miller to your friends or get it for them for Christmas. My husband and I are in the middle of it right now and I think it would be super for someone in their position!

You don’t have to buy the book. Your local library should have The total money makeover. Thats where I got it.
Bee, I felt EXACTLY how you felt earlier this year. I took his class at a local church and it totally changed my life. The church I went through offers scholarships to take the class because they truly believe in it so I only had to pay $20. It’s like everyone above said, it is totally worth it. I thought I didn’t have the money to even pay my bills but Dave makes you look at everything in a different light. He has truly been a life saver to me.
Last month my husband and I paid off our mortgage. I’m 37 and he is 39. Last week my husband lost his job. Thanks to Dave’s plan, we only have minimal bills (utilities and food) which can easily be paid with the savings we stashed away (thanks to one of the baby steps). We have stopped contributing to savings for now while we look for another job, but I feel secure for the foreseeable future. I couldn’t say that if I still had the over $400K in debt we had before we started doing Dave’s plan.

We’ve used Dave for a long time! I love his envelope system where you use cash (and when you’re out you stop spending). His philosophy is all about dumping debt, building wealth, and living within your means. I did Financial Peace in high school and have since bought a ton of his books (whenever they’re ons ale) to give to friends who are struggling financially and need some direction. My husband and I don’t make a lot, but thanks to Dave, we’ve really been able to be wise with our money (put 20% down on our home, have a 6 month emergency fund, etc.). I just ordered this..We are a single income family and we have NO debt, but our car is 9 years old and I know we will need a new one in a few years, also next year I will have 2 sons in college and we are making them pay for their own college education because we couldn’t save much for them but we do help them with living expenses and the use of my car whenever they need it. I use a credit card linked to Amazon and I use that to pay for EVERYTHING and I have it set up to pay it off every month. That way I earn the most possible free amazon gift cards I can, it really helps for Christmas and any of the stuff we want that we wouldn’t normally buy. I will be honest I really don’t know if Dave Ramsey can help me much but I don’t like my house and I really want a new one 🙂 and I am hoping that with zero debt, that Dave Ramsey can help me figure out how to save every dime we need to buy a new house for cash in the not too distant future!!..Thanks Collin for posting this and for all of you that posted your opinions and to Michelle for posting the best deal using all the promo codes! Thank you so much for posting this deal! At the end of this past summer, I checked out the TMM book from my local library. It is so inspiring! My husband and I were really making progress with his baby steps, until Sept when my father was in an auto accident and I used up our small savings to drive an hr away to visit him in the hospital almost every day for 6 weeks! He is now staying with us until he is totally recovered. Now that things are starting to settle down, this deal couldn’t have come at a better time!! This hands down is the best financial program I have ever used! I am not a “budget” person and I love to spend money! This program has really given me a great desire to really create a new lifestyle for our family. It’s easy, and he’s hillarious so it makes it all super fun to work the program.

This system has completely changed our family! We did Total Money Makeover and the only debt we currently have is our mortgage. It is amazing how eliminating all that debt could make our lives so much better as we are more relaxed and not stressed out about money. I never knew how stressed my husband was until he was so relaxed. I highly recommend this to everyone…great marriage enrichment tool.
My husband and I have been Dave Ramsey fans since we saw him live in 2003. We started applying his get out of debt principles to our finances right after we saw him in person. From October 2003 to April 2005 we paid off $73K in debt (sold a rental property and paid off student loans, home equity loans and a car loan.) We started aiming our excess cash at our mortgage in 2005. In 2006 we moved into a new house and started paying double, sometimes triple mortgage payments. I’m proud to say that on October 12th we paid off our mortgage! We’ve paid off a total of over $400K since October 2003, while saving for our 4 kids’ college educations and putting away money for our retirement. I cannot tell you how different it feels to be completely debt free!

Dave Ramsey changed our lives. We stumbled on his book “Total Money Makeover” about 3 years ago, just as my husband and I were thinking about starting a family. We were able to pay off all of our debt (we worked hard! Each of us working 2-3 jobs at a time!) just before our daughter was born last May. Now that we have a child, being debt-free and on top of our finances has freed us up to be home with her more, as well as being less stressed in our marriage and parenting. I think the best thing for us was helping us get on the same page financially and having the same goals.
