Through January 31, 2011, Macy’s is hosting the “Biggest Denim Event of the Season” sale. Here’s how it works….For ANY denim purchase that you make in misses, petites, women’s, men’s, young men’s, juniors or kid’s denim departments, you will get a $10 Savings Card at the register. You can then redeem each savings card through January 17, 2011 (the fine print in the weekly ad states that you can only use the $10 savings card thru 1/17 even though the denim sale goes thru 1/31?!) on your next sale or clearance purchase in ALL apparel depts including shoes and accessories (some exclusions do apply).

Check out this email and pictures that I received from reader, Christina…

I went to Macy’s today because I heard there are some really awesome deals if you paired it with the $10 coupon for every denim purchase and I scored BIG TIME! Here’s what a Happy Meal will buy you – Below are my receipts of the kids clothes I scored for my baby sister….According to the receipts, I saved a whopping $312.55! I only paid $2.52 for two bagfuls. The promo is buy any denim and get a $10 coupon from the cashier to use on your next purchase of ANY apparel (it doesn’t have to be denim again), accessories, or shoes. Go get them denim! Happy New Year everybody! Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip 2 Save!

Note: The total savings that Christina snagged with each purchase are circled in black pen.

Come back and let us know what great deals you are able to snag!

ALL OF THE LISTED RECIEPTS ARE AFTER THE INITIAL PURCHASE. IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY, ALL OF THE RECIEPTS SAY “TOTAL COUPON SAVING” WHICH THEN LIST THE $10 OFF COUPON. EVEN AFTER THE INITIAL PURCHASE, SHE STIIL SCORED SOME GREAT DEALS! CONGRATS! **SORRY IM NOT YELLING, I’M AT WORK AND WE USE ALL CAPS**

I tried to roll the Macy denim coupon by buying more denim to get another round of coupons and the clerk, then the manager, said it was not allowed. Still did very good. Bought 12 baby items for less than $11.

  2. Fanny

I have to agree with majority of the shoppers in regards to the stores being hot and cashiers rude. My cashier went to the extreme to tell me that what I wanted to do was “stealing & unfair” because I tried to use a $10.00 coupon on a denim item. I tried to reason with her by reading the coupon that said “use like cash” and had no mention of DO NOT USE on another denim item. I told her that I wanted to return the item and get back my $10.00 coupon. She rolled her eyes, mumbled things under her breath and when I mentioned that she seemed annoyed she agreed and told me “just to sign so I could get my money back”. What and awful experience. I felt like crying but didn’t.

I understand that retail sales people have a lot of stress during this time of year but it’s not hard just to educate the customer on the coupon use and/or transaction.

    • Julie

BOO to your cashier! I totally rolled all my coupons purchasing 7 different denim items using a $10 off each in a single transaction and all my cashiers were happy to do it. Find someone else!!! There is NOTHING wrong with using your Macy’s cash on denim!!!

    • Rachel

You should always let the store manager know about these types of experiences. They do not want you posting this on this website. Macy’s is a reputable store for one reason and it is not their prices. Customer service is the life line in retail. This was not K-mart you went into it was Macy’s. It is not our fault they are giving things away. Nor is it the job of the cashier to judge you or make you feel bad in any way.

  3. Caroline

Our HOOVER, AL Macy’s said this…

-Coupon not valid on regular price items… SALE and CLEARANCE ONLY.
-You can only get one coupon per transaction / you can only use one coupon per transaction.
-Every Transaction must total at least $10 to use the coupon.

    Here were my results…
To start things off…I purchaced a $5 Jean from the girls section that I dont even want (just to get the coupon).
Then I purchaced Junior Jeans Size 14 (most all were sale priced at 14.99). I bought 6 pair in 6 different transactions to keep using & receiving coupons. i paid just under $5 for each.
I then purchaced a baby boys outfit that was sale priced $10, After the coupon it was 52cents
Then after I thought I was finished I used my coupon to buy a bunch of baby boy items that were from the clearance rack. Keep in mind as you are shopping that things may be less than they are priced. I thought that was the end of my trip, but the outfit that i got for 58cents in that order had jean shorts with it and I had to do more shopping…
bought another outfit for under $1.
FINALLY FINISHED… It was A LOT of work. I was there forever… I SCORED big time. But I still spent about 40.00 total.

It looked like if you have younger kids to buy for and you play your cards right you can score BIG for ALMOST NOTHING!!!
However, the older you get the more you pay… unless you really luck out.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks for the advice! I’m from Hoover as well!

  4. Caroline

One more tip… If there is a line, head to a section of the store that doesn’t have one. ANYONE can check you out…and if they are slow they will most likey be happy to help you. MY LADY actually divided up my transactions for me. =)

  5. bentina2004

when I went to the Orem store today the manager there told me I could not roll the coupons and that I had to spend more then $10 on jeans to get a coupon and that it was supposed to be $10 of a $25 purchase.
so annoyed and did not get a totally awsome of a deal as I thought I would as he stood over the checkout lady the whole time to make sure I didn’t get anything I wasn’t supposed to.
    so annoying and frusturating.

    • Julie

BOO! I’m in LA ( and grew up in Orem!) I bought clearance toddler denim for $3.49 and they gave me the coupon and I rolled it on every purchase – most of them 12.99 or 14.99 It does not state a limit on the coupon so I would have fought it. Stinks.

    • Allison

I went to a store in West Valley City and had the same result. Such rude cashiers!!!

  6. Julie

Thank you Hip to save for giving me a heads up on this deal! I bought infant jeans clearance for $3.49 and got $10 Macy’s cash.
Used that to buy a toddler denim skirt and it brought it to $2.99.
Got $10 more dollars. Used that to buy kids jeans for my son, which brought it to $2.99
Got $10 more …dollars. Used that to buy sale-priced dark wash flare ladies denim. Brought down to $4.99
    And got $10 more dollars.
Used that on my much awaited skinny jeans with super cute pockets.
Only cost $4.99 – And got $10 more dollars.
So, I used that to buy stylish jean capris for summer. Again – $4.99
    And got $10 more dollars.
Then the best transaction of all…. Used that towards stitch-pocket jeans on clearance for $9.99. The register got confused, but the cash/coupon did NOT state a limit, so the manager honored it, charged me $0.00, gave me a penny….
AND $10 more Macy’s cash. WA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

  7. Kasey

Has anyone tried this at Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem?

Just wondering before I waste gas if it’s worth going or not.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I did it there. I bought a pair of toddler jeans that were on clearence for $3.49, and got the $10 coupon, I had to remind the cashier to give it to me, but she did with no problem. I ran out of time and have not used the coupon, but I will be back to try to roll it!

      • Tanya

I went there today and used it it the Children’s department. I went to the register with 2 denim items and asked if they needed to be purchased in 2 transactions to get 2 of the savings cards. She informed me you only received 1 per customer. I didn’t think this was true and didn’t see anything about it. So, I just purchased one of the items then held onto the other denim item until I found someone else to ring it up and get another coupon.

  8. Jenny

I just got home from going….got 5 items from clearance rack…paid $16.XX and got 5 of the $10 coupons. Would have done more, but they were closing due to it being New Years Eve. I am going to go back and try to roll tomorrow….cross your fingers

  9. romy

what if you want to return the denim?? do they take away the coupon?
    lol

  10. Stacy

Went to Macy’s tonight to try this deal. I was able to do three transactions for baby denim that were marked $4.99 and used a 20% off coupon (mailed to me), so I payed $3.29 each and received (3) $10 coupons. I went to juniors and got a pair of denim for $9.99 but when I went to pay with the coupon, the manager said that I could use the coupon but not get another coupon for the demin purchase, so no rolling. So I paid the $9.99 and got the coupon. I also snagged 2 pairs of Levis shorts for my husband for $9.99 each, the cashier tried using the $10 coupon but it declined, so I got two more $10 coupons. Now I have (6) $10 coupons. Even without rolling, it was fun shopping!
Does anyone know if they can all be used in one transaction, like $60 cash?

  11. momwhocares

I went all the way to the mall and there was not items less than $9.99 in the toddlers or infants and they did not have but a few denim things. I thought maybe it we because they sold out, but they had no places for them. THey had one rack that had a few jeans for $14.99 on sale. Oh well, it was the mall – so they probably took them all to the back until after this sale thing.

  12. S

Tried this in the OC and they were more strict. They said I couldn’t use any other coupon, like the 15% off along with the $10 denim coupon. I had to use one or the other. I also got an outfit with a pair of jeans and the male cashier wasn’t going to let me use it but the female manager said that it counted. Anyway, still got a 3 piece toddler outfit w/jeans for just under $9 and got the $10. It’s good the manager was nice b/c the cashier was going to fight me on every purchase. I understand retail is hard (I once worked retail) but if you plan to take the job then try to do your job w/o making customers feel bad for getting a good deal legitimately!

  13. Jenn

Speaking of hot, I am in Missouri and the entire store was evacuated down to women’s shoes for a tornado. It was nuts. And yes, hot and disgusting in there, too. Blech. But worth it for the sweet deal. I was able to roll the promotion…yay!

  14. Matthew Scola

Wife and I cleared out 2 Macy’s baby departments of all clearance items…

13 transactions $72.14 out of pocket, $585 in merchandise at MSRP…

Our baby will be outfitted in style… We were able to find Polo denim for girls on clearance for $12.98 minus $10.00…. 🙂

  15. kathy

i had a very happy & sweet sales person at macy’s today, i scored big, i bought 39 items for a total of $49.21, saved a total of $816.16, had a total of 19 transactions, my sales person did’nt seem to mind me rolling over the deals, started with a $3.78 purchase and bought a sale denim item with another sale item each time, this will go down as one of my best shopping trips ever, and i do a lots of shopping
    Happy New Year to me@#$%&*@#$%&

  16. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Has anyone been to Woodland Mall or Rivertown Mall in Grand Rapids, MI? I’m wondering if its worth making the 45 minute trip to either one of them today.

    • Jess S

I was at Woodland today. The clearance was pretty picked over but there was some good sale prices. They did let me roll the coupons and were very helpful!

  17. Kelly D.

So….did anyone know that LEVI denim jeans do not apply for the $10 coupon?? I purchased a pair of LEVI jean shorts on clearance for $7.99 and got my $10 coupon, but you couldn’t use that $10 to purchase LEVI jeans. Crazy!! Didn’t know that was an exclusion. Still got out of there with great deals though!

  18. kelly

I had a very nice cashier and an almost empty little kids section, which was so nice that a bunch of customers were not waiting in line behind me and the cashier was super nice and helpful. my only issue was that there were very few items in the baby/toddler section that were under $10! I did find a rack of jeans that were $10.98 and purchased a pair which gave me the coupon. but when I tried to get another one, she said unfortunately it couldn’t be used on that brand (everyday value). So I think I ended up getting 2 pair of jeans, a jean jacket and 2 shirts for a total of $10, which I was happy with! I then went to the women’s section and found a pair of jeans there for $15 and then a rack of shirts priced at 4.99. so I got 3 items up there for $15, which still is pretty great for Macy’s! When I went to check out though, it was an older gentleman and he had no idea about the $10 promotion. I was thinking, how do you not know about it when there are signs plastered all over the store and it’s your big in-store promo of the week?!! took while, but finally got my items!

  19. Victoria

Wooooo Hoooo! original price $617.77 and my final price on everything was $29.17

I got so much…here some that I can remember.
    Jean jacket
2 pairs of jeans for myself
2 pairs of jean shorts for my husband
    1 t-shirt
2 pairs of skinny jeans for an 8 year old
2 pair of capris for kids
    1 hello kitty skirt
    2 hello kitty dresses
    2 pairs of jeans(toddler)
2 baby boy clothing sets(jeans, vest and long sleve shirt)
1 jean, shirt and zip up sweater set for baby boy
    1 baby boy shorts

    2 baby boy jeans

1 pair of pajamas for myself

I think that’s everything!! I had a good time doing this knowing how much I was saving!

    Good Luck!

  20. Beth

Thanks so much for this post. Got my daughter some jeans, another daughter a dress and my husband and I some clothes. Rolled the deals only twice. Awesome!!

  21. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Young mens Levis size 8-20 are on sale for 19.00-24.99. its not as good as the babies but if you have an older one this is a really good price on Levis.

  22. Melissa

The cashier in San Antonio wouldn’t let me roll them into another denim purchase. But I found infant shorts on clearance for $3.48 each, so even without rolling I got 6 pairs of shorts for less than $20 and $60 worth of coupons. I think I’ll go try another mall tomorrow and see if they let me roll them. It seems it’s YMMV on this one.

    • Melissa

Went to a different macys today and was able to roll-paid less than $5 for 4 pants, 2 shorts, 6 shirts, and 3 melissa & doug coloring pads. Awesome!!! And I met a fellow hip2saver while shopping, that was fun!

      • Tara

Hi there! I think it was me that you met:-) Nice job with your deals – and it was so cool to run into another hip2saver.

  23. SSJ

I got 6 complete outfits for toddlers/youngs originally priced at $247.71 for $16.04. I still have 2 $10 coupons to spend. Any idea if there is any women sweaters/pants/tops on sale that I can use my these 2 passes on?
Thanks to Collin and us savers for this deal. This will definitely go down as one of best deals of 2011 🙂

  24. Alisha

I just got back from Macy’s and scored some BIG deals. Both of my kids were in need of Jeans so this really worked out for me!! Unfortunately my store didn’t have a good selection of clearance, everything was atleast 14.99. So anyways, I bought a pair of jeans on sale for $12.99 and two $1.00 ornaments, used the 15% off coupon and paid $14.00 OOP and then got the $10 coupon. I then purchased 6 more pairs of jeans in 6 different transactions and paid $3.26 for each pair. Altogether I purchased 7 pairs of jeans, a denim skirt, a dress with leggings, a sweater dress, 2 ornaments and 2 shirts for a total of $40.00 OOP!!!!

  25. Phillis

Thanks to Collin and everyone that posted your deals. My freind and I went today and we scored really big time. $340 worth of clothing for $25 between us. Of course, we had a great clerk that let us roll our $10 gift card! Thanks again everyone!

  26. Elisabeth

Yahoo…thanks for this post! Went today with my girls (10 &12)! Got ten items for just about $15!!! Could not combine the 15% with the rolling of the $10 q but still…great deals…we got 6 pairs of jeans…2 each and 4 tops!!!

  27. Lisa

I will be doing this at our other Macy’s. The first one I went to didn’t have much denim left 🙁 So I will wait for them to restock, but I did get some great items plus items to donate. I picked up about 18 items for super cheap. First cashier didn’t even give me my denim cash for my first purchase. Then when I used it on another pair, didn’t give me anymore. So I went to the men’s department, b/c my DH needed socks, and befriended a cashier who said it was legit to use it on any denim and get another. He was so nice I gave him a pair of the pants I bought for his daughter that was the same age. They weren’t my daughter’s style (which is mine right now since she is only 1). He was SO happy and appreciate. I like to share the love!!

  28. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Does anyone know if it will work today?

  29. Kim

Everyone who got a good deal, are you all able to roll meaning use the denim $10 card to buy another denim and get another card? I got a kids denim item at clearance yesterday and the cashier said it is not eligible item? so I went another cashier to ask for it and she said I CAN NOT buy a denim with denim $10? I’m confused and want to know how I can get a good deal.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I went on Jan 1st and the promotion was still going. I was able to roll the $10 card over to the next order as long as the items were on sale, denim or not and still got another $10 card. I bought in the women’s and children departments. Spent $89 saved $238.65.

  30. tara

anyone having problems with cashiers not knowing the sale? i found calvin klein 3 piece outfit with jeans for 5 dollars and a pair of levis jean shorts for 6 dollars that i was hoping to turn into 2 coupons. The cashier had no idea about the sale, finally found the pad of coupons but wouldn’t give them to me without buying 10 dollars. She called her manager and she/he said the same thing. I agreed to combine my 2 items for 1 coupon ( i didn’t feel too badly since the calvin klein outfit was supposed to be $60 and was ringing up for $5 for some reason), but instead of giving me the coupon after I paid, she just used the coupon for that transaction. I paid 2 dollars for 2 nice items, but I am wondering if anyone else is running in to problems. I sent macy’s a not so nice email saying that the consumers shouldn’t know the sales better than the salespeople/managers.

  31. Connie

Wow, some great and not so great outcomes. I’m going to go try my luck during my lunch hour so I hope I come out with some great deals. I never shop at Macy’s and I hope all goes well, wish me luck 🙂

  32. Christine

Is the denim sale still on? I wasn’t sure because when I called on monday, the lady in the children’s section said she didn’t know anything about it so it must be over already. but then again, it may be that she just doesn’t know about it. I wanted to know if it is worth driving 45 minutes for it (if it is still on, I’m going!)

  33. Nikki

i went into Macy’s tonight and the lady said that they stop handing the coupon out on Sunday, but you can still redeem them if you had them. So my question is what does the fine print say on the coupon as to when they will stop handing them out?

  34. bree

I was just at the store and it ended december 31st according to the signs

  35. Suzy

They are not handing them out at the West Valley, UT Macy’s. Bummer
