Through January 31, 2011, Macy’s is hosting the “Biggest Denim Event of the Season” sale. Here’s how it works….For ANY denim purchase that you make in misses, petites, women’s, men’s, young men’s, juniors or kid’s denim departments, you will get a $10 Savings Card at the register. You can then redeem each savings card through January 17, 2011 (the fine print in the weekly ad states that you can only use the $10 savings card thru 1/17 even though the denim sale goes thru 1/31?!) on your next sale or clearance purchase in ALL apparel depts including shoes and accessories (some exclusions do apply).

Check out this email and pictures that I received from reader, Christina…

I went to Macy’s today because I heard there are some really awesome deals if you paired it with the $10 coupon for every denim purchase and I scored BIG TIME! Here’s what a Happy Meal will buy you – Below are my receipts of the kids clothes I scored for my baby sister….According to the receipts, I saved a whopping $312.55! I only paid $2.52 for two bagfuls. The promo is buy any denim and get a $10 coupon from the cashier to use on your next purchase of ANY apparel (it doesn’t have to be denim again), accessories, or shoes. Go get them denim! Happy New Year everybody! Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip 2 Save!

Note: The total savings that Christina snagged with each purchase are circled in black pen.

Come back and let us know what great deals you are able to snag!

Wow – i’ve never shopped at Macy’s might need to go check this out – thanks!

  2. Dianne

No Macy’s here for me to enjoy, but I did enjoy seeing Christina’s haul & wanted to congratulate her on some seriously good bargain shopping! I think I counted 11 items, so that works out to less than a quarter each at a 99%+ savings…..AMAZING! WTG, Christina!

    • Christie H.

      Same here! WTG!

    • DeeTrig

Congrats on this great deal. I’m hoping to score some deals today!

    • Tara

Don’t get too upset! I went to our Macy’s and they didn’t have ANY kids jeans on clearance and it was wayyy tooo busy to even bother looking for adult jeans. The lowest price I saw was 24.99! Not worth it!

    • Christina Lazo

      Thanks Everyone!!!

There are MANY Jeans in Juniors for $14.99 so after the $10 coupon – it’s only $4.99!!!
I got some more of these today for myself ^___^

  3. marissa

Does anyone know if this rolls? Could I buy a piece of denim, use my savings certificate to buy another, and then get another savings certificate?

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

yes it does roll…but there are a few restrictions on things you can use the pass on such as the everyday value items or full priced items

  4. thebakersopera

I don’t have a family to clothe, just myself, but am a sucker for a good deal. Just a warning for those of you with longer legs, Macy’s doesn’t carry “Tall” jeans (at least my local Macy’s doesn’t). I’ll still check the sale out, but those of us who need tall jeans might be out of luck.

    • Kelly

Boo on that! I need longs!

    • april

agreed! i need 36″ inseam, i do not think i have ever found a great deal on jeans for me…although buckle jeans last forever!

      • laurlala

I need longs too- you would think with such a large selection they would get with it and branch out into longer inseams!!

      • watsondd

April, if you check out New York and co. they carry tall. Not sure if they are 36 inseam or not but they are having a huge sale now. HTH

    • Betsy

I got DKNY at Macy’s once that are long enough for my to wear with my boots and i usually can never find jeans long enough for me.

  5. Amanda K.

I was also wondering if this rolls, I am thinking that is some of what Christina did, but just wanted to make sure before heading to the sale.

  6. lisa

I don’t understand how this goes through 1/31 if the savings pass has to be redeemed by 1/17. Anyhow, did the deal this week. Bought 2 pair of jeans for my son, used a 20% coupon and paid $22. I had to ask for the savings passes or she wouldn’t have given them out but the sign was there next to the jeans and I did get 2. Used those to buy something for myself. There are exclusions though. I couldn’t use them both at once and not on a “buy 5 for 25” type of deal. Still works out pretty good and they have cashmere sweaters on sale for less than $30!

    • Heather F

In our store (Dayton Mall) it says the denim event is only until Sunday. You have until the 17th to use your coupon.

  7. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Im curious if you did all the transactions at one time (seperated), and can you use all the 10 gift cards in one shot??

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

you have to seperate them as they only let you use one pass per transaction…i had to do a total of 12 transacations….real pain in the bottom but worth the savings

      • Amy

I used 2 in one transaction…I guess it just depends on your cashier

  8. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

okay i think the above post is a little unrealistic as there are lots or rules and you would have to buy a pair of jeans to start off the transaction which would total more then a few cents. anyways i always scored great in this sale with a savings of 81% but i spent around $80 for $459 worth of clothing.

it is a great sale but expect to pay more then a couple dollars

heres my blog post about it:
    https://showmehowyoudothat.blogspot.com/2010/12/macys-denim-event-and-clearance.html

    • Samantha Booker

I assume that the figure given was for the transactions after the denim was purchased. I am planning a mall trip today, anyway so hoping they have some cheap denim items!!!

  9. Kelly

There’s a coupon floating around for an extra 15% off. I got it off a website, but I can’t seem to get the link to show up 🙁

    • Samantha Booker

There’s one on macys.com under Promotions. HTH!

  10. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

How much are the jeans to start with?

    • Jen

I did this deal earlier this week. I bought my hubby a pair of jeans for $24.99 plus a pair of $1.50 socks (75% off) and used a $10 off of $25 coupon (I think the coupon was only for Sunday and Monday) So I paid approximately $17 and then got a $10 voucher. I used that to buy 2 pairs of socks ($1.50 each) and this gadget thingy that my husband wanted for $7.50 (75% off). And I only paid $.50 for that transaction. So, total $17.50 for a pair of jeans, a $30 gadget and three pairs of socks, savings was over $70. Pretty good deal, I think!!! They do have cheaper jeans in the kids section if that’s what you’re looking for and of course high-end jeans that are around $80…so it really varies.

  11. Lighthousefam

Is this in-store only?? There’s no Macy’s by me.

  12. Nina

Great savings for Christina! How much did she spent for the jeans in order to receive the $10 off coupons??

    • robyn

i am wondering the same thing. not so much of a good deal if you are spending god only knows what on jeans from macy’s to get the $10!

      • Amye

I just bought my 2 year old jeans from Macy’s (On sale for 10.99) and got the $10 card!!

    • Jenna

I saw kids jeans around $12 and I bought my husband a pair for $24.99 and had a coupon for $10 off of $25. I really had to search though to find cheap jeans for my husband most pairs were $35 or more.

    • Christina Lazo

Actually, I didnt spend anything! My mother bought a pair of kids jeans for my sister the night before clearanced at $7 and she used a 15% off coupon which turns out to be $5.95. They gave her the $10 coupon for her purchase of denim and she was so surprised! She came home and gave it to me telling me to go do my H.I.P Killer Savings with it. 🙂

So $2.52 out of my pocket.
Try buying some CHEAP jeans to start off your $10 voucher!

  13. Joy

I wonder what coupon she used in her first transaction.

  14. DeeTrig

Thanks so much for this GREAT Deal! My family and I are heading out to do a little shopping (we have to drive an hour to get to our closest Macy’s) today and Hopefully I’ll be able to score some great deals at Macy’s & Khol’s too.

  15. aundria

This is where my kiddos had gift cards from grandma we hit macy’s every year on the 26th. This is the sale they have going on at that time, plus the 26 they have coupons in the paper for 10 off 25 sale or clearance items. so we used that to score the jeans, buying 3 pair for only 24.89 then got three coupons for the ten dollars off. it was great scored lots of good stuff. Hope you all can find some great deals. 🙂

  16. Susan

That is truly amazing! Wish I had a Macy’s close by!

  17. vikky

i purchased jeans for my little one yesterday for 2.27 , and had to ask for $10 coupon…

  18. missy

where is this denim deal printed at in case i need to show the cashier?

  19. Jilian

I was at Macy’s last night. they had nice jeans for juniors and women I saw with 24.99 sales tags. Plus there are a ton of coupons right now

  20. Chang C Xiong

Can you buy clearance jeans under $10 and still get the $10 savings card at the register?

    • MommySpendsLess

The fine print on the banner Collin posted says: “We’ll give you a $10 savings card with any regular, sale or clearance-priced misses, petites, womens, mens, young mens, juniors or kids denim purchase” I’m not having any luck finding out more information/exclusions on Macy’s website…

    • emilytwinmom

Yes, I purchased jeans that were $9.99 and got the coupon, and a lady in front of me realized about the coupon deal when I told her in line and bought her baby girl jeans for $2ish and got a coupon too!

  21. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I’m going to assume that she bought from the clearance racks in order to get everything so inexpensivly. I can’t see anyone getting those kinds of deals unless they did.

  22. sallie0710

Way to go Christine! What a wonderful way to end the year! Many blessings to you and happy saving in 2011!

  23. Ashley

Yeah, I’m with someone else who already stated this. She DID NOT only pay $2.?? out of pocket. For the first transaction, she would have had to buy a pair of jeans first without ANY $10 off coupon. So, all of you fellow couponers that don’t have a Macy’s closeby, don’t think she got all of those pictured clothes for the $2 bucks. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still probably a really good deal & I’m sure Christina is happy with what she got (this sale been going on for several days now, so things are probably picked over)…

  24. Candi

I went on Monday and used my $10 off a $25 purchase to buy a pair of Calvin Klein jeans. I got a pair for Christmas and loved them. So, I got another pair in a different shade. I paid $29.99 for jeans that are normally $49.50 Then I got a $10 off coupon. I went to a different Macys and got a pair of other jeans for $14.99 using the coupon. Now, I have another $10 off coupon to take back. Love it!

  25. Lorae

Just got home from Macy’s here in Terre Haute…
    1st Trans….
3 Pairs of girls denim from the clearance rack @4.99 a pair
minus the 15% off on clearance and 15% off from the front of the circular $3.18 per pair plus tax
Total $10.21 Then I received 3 $10 Denim coupons to use before 1-17-2011 on anything (a few exceptions..everyday value, special purchase)
    2nd Trans
1 pair of juniors jeans $14.99 minus the $10 plus tax.. Total $5.34 and I received another Denim coupon!!!!
    Great savings… YIPEE!!

    • Lashalot

Wow! I am SO on my way to Macy’s!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

wow! so you get $10 coupon for every pair of jeans you buy and not the whole purchase? ooohh….

  26. Lisa

I just did this deal.. Did 6 transactions, spent a total of $19.20, got 6 pairs of kid’s jeans (sized 12m-5), plus a pair of men’s jeans and 2 girl’s shirts (4t), PLUS left with 2 $10 off coupons to use yet. I didn’t get to look for myself as the kids were melting down but I’ll be going back again before this deal ends!

  27. lauren

So you dont have to do seperate transactions for the demin coupons? You purchased three pairs of toddler jeans in one trans and you got three 10.00 gift cards?

    • lauren

      My question is for Lorae

    • Jennifer

I was able to get them all in one transaction! HTH!

    • Lorae

If you purchase 5 pairs of jeans you get 5 coupons….in the same transaction! It doesnt seem like there is a limit!

  28. Jennifer

I did this today! They have clearance racks that are an extra 30% off ticketed price. I found 7 pairs of boys jeans (12 & 18 months) for 4.99 each. After the extra 30% and my 15% coupon, I paid 2.97/pair, plus received $70 in passes! I am going to use those to shop for myself. Hope to find some good bargains and use my 15% coupon again! 🙂 Good luck!

    • SSJ

Where can I find 30% and 15% off coupons? Thans

  29. elizabeth

Just got back from doing this deal and I was shocked at how well it worked! I got $128.50 worth of clothes sizes 6month and 5 in boys for $7.39!!!!!!!! Although the clearance section was very picked over at my Macy’s I still found some good things! Time to go to the other macy’s!!!!

    • elizabeth

oh yea……….I did have to ask for the $10 shopping pass the lady at the register wasn’t going to give it to me unless I had asked!!!!

    • SSJ

Does the $10 rewards work only for purchase of another denim/cloth or any thing in store?

  30. Heather F

Just got back from our Macy’s and I’m not sure if our cashier did it properly. She had to make three phone calls (after my husband showed her a sign with the details of the denim event) and then we ended up with a receipt and four pieces of paper stapled to it for our four coupons. They are all identical pieces of paper that look like they were copied on a bad copy machine. Is this right? What do everyone else’s rewards look like?

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Please, what do your $10 reward coupons look like?

      • Lorae

My coupons are a blue coupon that has red writing..from a tear off pad! Hope that helps!!

  31. Erin

I did this today and had to ask for the coupon as well. The cashier was extremely rude and I had to call the manager in order to get the coupon. Even after the manager told her that I was entitled to the coupon she still gave me a hard time. Great deals though, just had to fight for them!

  32. Allie

I ran straight out to Macy’s to do this, but when the cashier realized how great the deal was, he called the manager who told me “NO WAY”. He said I could use it for every other transaction, but I couldnt receive a $10 pass if I’d just used one! So, walked away with nothing 🙁

  33. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

The Macy’s I went was a mess. I grabbed a toddler denim jacket on clearance and one cashier said that I couldn’t use it to get the $10 coupon for my next purchase. I went to another cashier who let me buy the jacket and get the $10 coupon…but then I couldn’t roll the deal. She said I can’t use the $10 coupon on another denim item. I ended up getting my daughter a denim jacket, a sweatjacket, and a tshirt for under $10 total, but I would’ve liked to have rolled the deal a little better.

It was too hot and crowded to run around the store trying different cashiers :/

  34. BethF

I am pretty sure that $2.52 is a typo. If you look at the receipts, it is $92.52 that she spent and that is the figure in marker too.

    • Amber

I bet she knows how much she spent. The 92.52 (not that this is a big deal, arguing and what not) is how much she SAVED.

      • Amanda

If you look at the receipts again…the number underlined is how much she spent which would equal out to 2.54. She wrote 92.52 out because it was covered by another receipt (that was the amount she saved on that specific receipt.)

  35. Jesse

I work at Macy’s and I’m not sure if you’re aware of this, but we work on commision. Everyone keeps commenting on how they have to ask for the coupons and how the clerks have a bad attitude, but before you get mad try to think about it from our point of view.

Whenever we have these sale days we end up spending half an hour with each customer rolling the deal, and we’re only getting about 10 cents for our time, because we don’t get paid for the amounts you use coupons on. The registers don’t let us use more than one coupon per transaction, we have no control over how they work or what exclusions they have, and yet we get yelled at by almost every customer because they don’t take the time to read the fine print (and yes, I know there’s WAY too much of it). If it were up to me, I would let the couponing customers do whatever they want just to stop them from being angry at me and to get them out of the store so I can help the customers that allow me to get paid, but I would get fired if I didn’t follow our coupon policies.

I love using coupons as much as the next person and understand how frustrating it is when a deal doesn’t work out the way you thought it would, but please try to be considerate of the people on the other side of the counter and remember that we’re people too. We want to help you, but sometimes it’s out of our control.

    • stephanie

Yes, let’s try to be kind to our retail employees, it is a truly thankless job. Every shopper should work a holiday season reatail job to understand.

    • Belle

I have a question…When you say “we work on commission” is that to say that the sales people don’t get paid at least minimum wage? I really didn’t think there were many in the workforce whose wages were solely commission in the retail industry. Especially in a setting where I don’t get personalized service- at the register?… I can’t understand where a commission would be warranted any more than giving a commission to the sales person ringing me up at target.

  36. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I just got back from Macys and was able to do this – I bought a pair of jeans for $12.99 for my son and got the $10 coupon back. I was able to use it get a pair of jeans for my daughter that were on sale for $12.99 and got them for $2.99 plus tax and another $10 coupon back. I used the coupon to get 3 shirts for my son for free that were only $3.99 each with the last coupon so I ended up spending around $19 for 2 pairs of kids jeans and 3 shirts.

i also wanted to add that I tried to use one of the $10 coupons on another pair of girl’s jeans but they said I couldn’t because the certain brand was excluded – so there are exclusions and you don’t know until you’re at the register.

  37. Lenay

I went today to try this out. I purchased my jean item and received the 10$ coupon and used it for my next transaction and only spent .53 cents for my second denim item. She wouldn’t give me another coupon though because she said I used a coupon for the item so I couldn’t get another one. I’m new to all of this so I don’t know if that was how it should have gone or not. I did get a good deal on my two purchases (2 three piece infant cloths sets)… just wish it was better! (The cashier frowned when she saw my .53 cent deal so maybe she thought I was getting too good of a deal???)

  38. J

CONGRATS to those that could get this deal to roll. My Macys saleslady said no deal .I could not use coupon on next jeans purchase to receive another $10 or I would have backed up the truck! 🙂
    HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL

  39. Courtney

this is only until 1/2 and u have to redeem by 1/17

  40. Kelly

I just went to Macy’s today. The deal is a little confusing. I purchased a pair of Carters 18 month girl jeans for 4.99, the cheapest I could find even though I do not have a little girl. I got the $10 coupon and bought my son a jean jacket on clearance for 10.48, so .48 after the coupon. Since it was a jean jacket I asked for the $10 coupon. The sales lady did question it but then she gave it to me. I tried to get another pair of kids jeans by going to another department to buy them but the register beeped so I walked away. He said the green dog brand is an everyday value so it is excluded. I ended up stopping at Macy’s again on the way out. I found a pair of jeans for $3.49 and 6.99 for my son. I ended up getting the same lady from the morning and she said the deal was only suppose to be on Levis but she put it through. so I think my total was .49 cents. Even though I bought jeans she did not give me another coupon so this deal is tough but I lucked out. Good luck.

    • Amy

I bought my son 2 green dog brand jeans and did receive $20 coupon with this transaction

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

you get $10 for buying green dog but you can’t use them to BUY green dog (unless they are on clearance)- so confusing i know

  41. Jenn

    Just did this deal.

First pair of jeans was a hideous pair on clearance that was $3.50ish and I got the $10 pass.
Next pair was Levi’s that, after sale markdown, was $10.49. After $10 pass and tax, they were $.53 cents.
    Repeat
    Repeat

So in total I spent about $5.25, plus had a $10 pass to use on shoes my husband was buying. In a mixup, she gave me another $10 pass, so we used those on socks.

So my OOP was $5.25 for 4 pairs of girls jeans, plus additional $20 savings. Not bad!

But, I should also mention everything was SUPER picked over….there was pretty much no more denim on any of the sale racks. Their EDV jeans (Green Dog, some Levi, etc) don’t count. I really wanted to pick up a pair of jeggins for my daughter, but they wouldn’t work with the $10 off pass so I just bypassed them.

    • emilytwinmom

We used our passes on EDV shirts and green dog toddler pants, and a manager was working the register next to ours and said nothing about my mom going through her line with the same stuff!!

  42. Jennifer

I was excited to try this deal so I headed to Macys and found a clearance pair of infant denim shorts on sale for $4.99 plus used my 15% off to make them $3.50. I then asked the sales lady for my pass but she said that I don’t get one because they are shorts and the deal was only on long pants! Talk about making stuff up! The other cashier asked me if what I bought was denim and when I said that they were the first sales lady blurted out to her “but she only spend $2” so the second cashier agreed with her that you can’t get the $10 pass on shorts. Ridiculous! Is there a way to contact corporate about that? I have never done that but sales people making up their own rules is just plain silly.

  43. Melissa

I was able to do a bunch of transactions and got $221 worth of stuff for $20. Super excited!!! I got all kids clothes since that seemed to be where the best deals were.

  44. Michelle

I bought 11 denim girls dresses on clearance. The cost per item was $3.48. After a slew of cashiers and managers disputed whether or not the sale was good on JEANS ONLY or ALL DENIM CLOTHING (as listed on the in store signage) they honored the deal and gave us $110 worth of coupons. We spent $34 so all in all a GREAT Deal!!

  45. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Macys was crowded, hot, and sooooo disorganized. I could not even believe the amount of returns, dressing room stacks, etc. sitting on the counters in each dept. I am a legendary shopper but it was insane and I had to leave. I didn’t do the deal. Ugggh. Come on Macys, even TJ Maxx, etc. has it more organized and less hot, and messy!!!
It would bug me too, as a cashier, if people kept rolling deals and i was getting zip in comission. I have worked many retail jobs and truly, there is great pressure to make a sale with multiple items. Using one item per transaction kills your numbers for the day. That is why they might “make up their own rules” and so on.

  46. emilytwinmom

I just got back from Macy’s, took my mom and twin toddlers. We got a crabby cashier in the kid’s section, but I think it was because there were TONS of people there and she had no help, the section was trashed and I mean trashed. However, that being said we found two prs of jeans for me in the clearance section, levi’s for $9.99 each, and got two coupons. Then we went upstairs and found the twins two prs of jeans, $2.90 each and got two more coupons. Found them seven shirts and used the two coupons!! One pr of my jeans is usually $44 before sales, so I feel like I got a ton for free… and our second cashier was SUPER nice and helped us to save even more money, gave us her 15% off shopping pass for every transaction!

And yes, our store was 20 degrees too hot too, we were all sweating like crazy! Maybe they do that to steer you away from staying???
