Check out this email I received from reader, Leah:

Many of us are very great shoppers/couponers, but a great conversation on your site would be – what products do you always pay full price for? Or is there something that you splurge on since you save so much money on other things?

For me, its my Clinique cosmetics (which NEVER have sales) I usually buy products when I can get free samples, etc., but that’s the best I can do. Unfortunately, my skin breaks out when I use cheaper products.

I think this is a great conversation topic! Being a coupon and deal blogger, I get emails from people all the time thinking somehow I use coupons on every single item I buy and never pay full price for anything. Well, that is honestly very, very far from the truth. I do use coupons when and where I can. I do try to negotiate deals and pay far below the retail cost for lots of items. However, I am not able to do this in all aspects of my life.

First, think how overwhelming and very time consuming it would be to try to skrimp and save in all areas. Think about how stressful it would be to constantly try to make sure you never pay full retail for ANYTHING. I could never do that and truthfully, I wouldn’t want to do that.

There is something to be said about splurging! It is, well, kinda freeing. When you’re taking the time to save money and use coupons, then you also deserve to take some time for an occasional splurge. Plus, think about it like dieting. When you diet and restrict your food intake, what do you end up doing? I know what I do – BINGE… Cake, donuts and ice cream become my best friend!  Same goes for restricting your budget to the point where you have no wiggle room. Sooner or later a spending binge will ensue. Trust me… I have been there more than once! 😉 In my opinion, moderation is key.

So with that being said, here are my favorite splurges:

*Designer denim (Yes, I like my jeans!)
*Coffee/lattes/cappuccinos (I try and use coupons, but there have been times when I’ve paid full price!)
*Pedicures
*NFL Sunday Ticket (That’s my hubby’s fault! 😉 )

Now what about YOU?! What are your splurges?

If I could splurge I would do it on my kids. I feel bad that I havent been able to give them a little more than what the basics are. But I believe that this year its going to be good. The hubby has a job so thats a good start.

My approach to spending is fairly simple. I rarely buy anything other than the necessities, but I refuse to compromise on quality. I’d rather live with less (which is liberating enough itself), than have a lot of things that I’m not as happy with or that fall apart easily and I have to replace, thereby spending more in the long term.

I splurge on food and buy the best quality that I can. When I eat them, I only buy free range, organic eggs, organic dairy, and wild-caught fish or organic, free-range meat.

When I buy clothes, I spend a little more but they last much longer. I don’t have a dryer, so the clothes are air-dried, which saves money on electricity as well as prolonging the life of my clothes. Double win!
