First, I would like to say CONGRATULATIONS to all you Hip2Savers who are pregnant or just recently had a baby! 🙂 You are about to embark on the greatest adventure that you will likely ever experience in life – full of tears, laughter, joy, pride… literally every possible emotion out there. I wish you all safe deliveries and healthy babies!

Now on to the important question! Check out the email that I received from reader, Amanda…

My husband and I recently found out that I am pregnant with our first! We are wanting to make the big announcement at our family’s 4th of July get-together. I was just wondering if you or any of the readers had ideas for a creative way to tell our families.

Let’s help Amanda out! Do you have any unique (and frugal) ways that she can make her big announcement?

When we announced it to our families…. We had our 3 yr old tell everyone, “What do you think…. BLUE OR PINK?” And he held up a pink and blue onsie!!! Everyone loved it!!!!!

  2. Kathy

My daughter and son-in-law announced their 3rd pregnancy with this text.. Fuller, party of 5. You do the math!

  3. Sherry Doyle

My brother and his wife had everyone over for a super bowl party and had it spelled out on the fridge in magnetic letters. It wasn’t until about half-time that I actually read it “We are having a baby” and freaked out and asked if it was true. I can’t tell you how many people were in and out of that kitchen getting food before I discovered it. lol We all thought it was really cute!

For our announcements, I re-wrapped Hershey’s candy bars with “wrappers” that I made in Microsoft Word. I designed them to look just like the real thing, but tweaked the logos to be baby oriented.

If creativity isn’t your strong suit, you can search for pre-made versions of these online (or I can forward my creations on to you – I loved making these wrappers and would be happy to share them).

If you make these yourself, like I did, the cost is MINIMAL – just the cost of a couple chocolate bars AND I think this idea would be especially fitting for 4th of July since everyone will be eating S’Mores!

PS – Congratulations to the new Proud Parents! 🙂

to our parents we sent handmade cards. I cut a square card, glued small black pepper in the middle. And in the inside i wrote “that’s how big your grandkid is now” 🙂

For our first baby, we used our two dogs. Both dogs came running into the living room wearing shirts. The Lab had on a shirt that said “I’m going to be a big brother” and the little dog had on a shirt saying “me too”. The funny part was when the little dog got out there first and everybody was “me too—what?”.

Future Big Sister wore pajamas that said “BIG SISTER” when we had company over!

you could get some cheap flower seed packets and put a picture of the anne geddes babies in the flowers on the front and then for care instructions on the back say like shower with hugs and kisses and promises to be spoiled and under germination time out aprox. 9 months or something along those lines…we are trying for number 3 and i thought it was kind of cute b/c my mom is REALLY into flowers so i could just say hey mom i found these really neat flower seeds that i just know you will love. but we also thought about puting big sister and im a big brother again t shirts on the kiddos and waiting for someone to notice and i like the idea of having a dinner of all “baby” foods baby spinach salad baby carrots baby back ribs and say we have desert too after everyone is done eating and say i have a bun the oven!

I think a good way to tell the family is offer to make a cake for the party and say im having a baby or what ever you want to say. To make if funnier set it out when everyone isnt looking and see who is paying attention!!! It would make for a fun time! But how ever you say it have fun and congrats on your first!!

For our first pregnancy, we had a bulldog that was our “baby” at the time~so we printed out 8.5X11 paper on the computer that said :They are having a baby” (one word on each sheet). Our bulldog was very photogenic, so we took a picture of her with each piece of paper (5 pics in a row) on our digital camera. When we wanted to tell a family member, we gave them our camera and told them to check out the pics that we took the other day. They would scroll through and read the message. It was fun!

I bought a bib for everyone in my immediate family saying things like I love my daddy, I love my grandma, I love my aunt! I gave it to them individually and they placed on their chest to dinner to announce itbto our closest friends!! Lots of fun and my first boy still has the bibs in s display on his wall on a clothesline. He loves it!!

  12. Jenny

We are slightly on the obnoxious side, so I set a bun with “Jenny’s” written on it in a toaster oven on the lounge table at work….then people had to stare at it and laughed and laughed when they figured it out- Jenny had a bun in the oven! Again, slightly obnoxious, but yet on the clever side if I do say so myself and people got a good laugh when they figured it out. 🙂

    Hi and Congratulations:
To announce it to family and friends at a BBQ is awesome. Instead of actually telling them, make a bunch of cupcakes in blue and pink with storks, rattles and baby items on them. They will figure it out all by themselves as to why they got the cupcakes. Good luck , have fun and Congratulations..

  14. Stephanie

get your coupons together and go buy diapers and wipes and lotion and little things you can get real cheap put them in a box and leave it on the doorstep with a note that says congradulations grandma & grandpa!!! Your going to need all this stuff cause your going to be babysitting soon. I have four and thats how we told my inlaws when we found out about our last.

  15. Jamie

I had my (previously informed) friend take a group picture of me and my friends and instead of saying “Say Cheese” she said “Jamie’s pregnant!” We got the picture with everyone’s surprised expressions, such an amazing picture i’ll treasure forever.

    • Stacie

I LOVE this idea. So simple, and yet SO memorable with the expressions from everyone. I would love to be the photographer just snapping away, and capturing the hugs and tears. Oh yay!

    • Jenplusfive

This is a great idea. And what a way to capture all of their faces at once!!!

    • Elizabeth M.

      Now that’s an awesome idea!

    • Ashley Eiban

I did this one too! It was a lot of fun- and a really funny picture we will have to remember the day by! We did 1 picture first with just ‘say cheese’ and then another ‘say Ashley’s pregnant’. Love it! 🙂

    • Renee

      AMAZING! 🙂

    • Val

My favorite by far!!! This is sweet!!!!!!

With our first pregnancy, I bought light pink and light blue balloons. When my husband came home, he automatically knew. We took the balloons to our parents’ houses and just walked in, speechless. (My parents kept asking whose birthday it was! LOL. Hubby’s parents figured it out quickly).
Second pregnancy – We went to our parents’ houses and I brought my camera with me. I told each set of parents to hold my daughter so that I can get a nice picture for her scrapbook. They thought nothing of it, because they know I was an avid scrapbooker. I took one picture and told them to say “cheese.” Then I said I was going to take another picture, but I told them to say, “L…. is going to be a Big Sister.” The picture was priceless!
This time around, I’m getting bigger more quickly, so it was just spur of the moment. At hubby’s parents’ house, the men were smoking cigars and my hubby smirked and said I shouldn’t be smelling the smoke. My FIL figured it out right away. My parents, I just called and told them. Honestly, I was too tired and hormonal to think of creative ways, lol.

Bring fortune cookies over and replace the fortune with something like “Amanda and her family will soon increase in number”

Don’t know if you would have time, but a photobook is really cute. This was done for a friend whose son & daughter in law are expecting twins. The last page had a picture of the ultrasound. The story was of how their 5 yr old has grown up every year. They sent the book to her on Mothers Day & told her to call them when she got it because they wanted her to read it aloud.

  19. Christine

Baby #1-we wrote letters to the grandparents and aunts from the baby and included a picture frame that said, “Aunt: Just like Mom but Cooler!”

    * For my sister who was getting married, I made her a “sex” box- included KYjelly, condoms, etc, and then the frame… it had a note attached that said, this is the result of SEX!

Baby #2- we created a menu and took my parents out to dinner. We had the waitress delivered the menu who told them it was the “Special” for the night… I had it laminated and it looked like a real menu with cute sayings like…
    Appetizer: Big Brother Rick
Forms of Payment: Kisses, Hugs, Cuddles,

Baby #3- I made cards and handed them to family members on Easter!

  20. Emma

I’m the last child of seven in my family and my daughter is grandchild number 17 so we wrapped a package with a 1 and 7 birthday candle in it and gave it to my parents at our big family party that July. They immediately knew what it meant and had a great time showing all the relatives.

  21. Amanda

Congrats! We were at the lake sitting around the campfire, I suggested to play pictionary. When it came to my turn, I drew an eyeball then wrote the word am and drew a mother pregnant. They all guessed and was shocked! Good luck.

  22. Stephanie

When we surprised my family with our first pregnancy, we attended a fine dining restaurant that we visited on special occassions. I had contacted the owner and asked that he be in on the “plan”……we began as usual ordering drinks and appetizers. Then he came around to tell us the specials of the evening and ended the specials with Baby A’ La Craycraft…served as boy or girl!!!! And then he was gracious enough to bring out a bottle of champagne for us (except me) to celebrate!!!

  23. Jaime

My husband and I gave our parents a photo album that said, “grandparents brag book”‘. They both said ” does this mean what we think it means”! Then the tears of joy and jumping up and down began. Our son was the first grandkid for both sets of grandparents.

    • Amanda

I like this. I did similar with father in law on Father’s day…. gave him a “World’s Greatest Grandpa” tshirt. He was speechless all day!

  24. Anonymous

Since it is the Fourth of July you could have everyone at the party go around and tell what they are thankful for living in America and when it comes around to your turn then you could say something like I am thankful that the new little one we are having will be born in a country where he or she will be free….Everyone waits to see if they heard what they think they heard and then the hugs begin 🙂 Congratulations!!!

  25. Deb

We went over for a family gathering and had a daughter wear a t-shirt that said I am the big sister, and then waited to see who would be the first to notice.

  26. Shelk

Find a “#1 Dad” t shirt on clearance somewhere from Father’s day and have hubby wear it. See how long it takes for people to figure it out. Or, buy some iron transfer paper for your printer and make yourselves some matching t-shirts of some sort announcing the big news.

  27. Amanda

We gave each set of grandparents their own bib on Father’s Day as their gift. “Grandpa’s sidekick” and “Grandma’s sweetie”. It is our first child and their first grandkid! Maybe you can order some napkins from Oriental Trading if there is enough time. They usually have some really discounted ones for different occasions.

Just looked on their site, “Heaven Sent” napkins under the Sale category. $0.50 for 16. Keep the napkins on the table during the family’s festivities to keep the guests guessing on what it means.

  28. Allie

I always thought this would be a fun and no cost way of telling family that you’re pregnant. You set everyone up for a picture and have your husband or yourself take the picture. Right before you take the pic you tell everyone to say, “(your name here) is pregnant!” Then you hurry and take the picture with everyone’s reactions. You then have a really great keepsake of how everyone reacted when you told them. It’s priceless.

  29. Emily

Friends of ours made cupcakes and iced each one with a letter- they were in random order till everyone at the party had to put them in order and it spelled out “Nelson and Emily are expecting”

  30. jessica

congrats we found out and announced our first born on the fourth of july as well. Heres to a happy healthy baby God Bless. You could bake a cake and decorate it in blue berries and rasberries saying Baby

  31. Catherine

For our first, our family was standing in a circle to say the blessing and afterward, I looked at my cousin who had a nine month old son and said, “Hey, could you start saving hand me downs for us in case we have a boy?” Needless to say, that got quite a reaction.
