If you are pretty particular about your ground beef, then you just may want to plan a trip to Whole Foods tomorrow, September 2nd, for their one-day grass-fed beef sale. Tomorrow only, you’ll be able to snag ground grass-fed beef at a sale price of just $4.99 per pound (normally this is priced at $7.99-$8.99 per pound)! Keep in mind that there is a limit of 10 pounds per person.

Wondering what’s so special about grass-fed cows?! According to Whole Foods, the most important aspects of grass-fed beef are:

* Grass-fed beef ranching is not only good for the animals, but involves supporting local producers.
* Grass-fed beef is a leaner choice and has a more favorable ratio of omega fatty acids.
* Grass-fed beef is priced fairly for the producer and is worth every penny.
* Grass-fed beef is a delicious alternative to grain-fed beef and cooks a little differently.

That is a great price! I often pay that for just regular ground beef (96/4).

  2. tambry

We bought a half cow, grass-fed beef a few months ago. We came home with around 200 lbs of meat including: steaks, roasts, stew meat and ground beef. We spent $830 so our average price was a little over $4/lb. *** Make sure you read up on how to prepare it. We are really happy and it will certainly be enough to last us one year, we eat beef once maybe twice a week.

And to my vegetarian friends reading this, let’s make a pact. I wont try to change your perspective if you wont try to change mine. I have seen a few times on here that the conversation and deal was overrun.

    • tambry

I forgot. Our farmer said the meat we bought was 90/10 and really is leaner and better for you. I was amazed the first time I made burgers that my hands weren’t greasy at all.

  4. Jen

We love our grassfed beef! From the ground beef to the filet mignon, we pay $3.75 per pound for our half from a local farmer.

  5. grace

it’s a great price, definately stock up!!! as you said, it is expensive to buy normally. i’ve never seen it on sale, and that 7.99/lb is killer. it’s worth it if you read about some of the things “grain fed” cows eat… yuck. my daughter has asthma, and grass fed beef is high in CLA (an omega fatty acid) that has been rumored to help with asthma when consumed daily.

    • Maureen

We don’t consume daily but our pediatrician told us the same thing for my 4 year old daughter’s asthma.

P.S. Yes, I would be stocking up! Great price.

  6. Summer

    Love it!
And Tambry – I’m a vegetarian but my spouse eats meat (a lot of it!!) So even us veggie fed peoples can get in on this. Plus, buying grass fed is wayyyyyyyy better for the environment. Cows can’t naturally digest corn… so it builds up in their tummies… how we get such bad ecoli outbreaks from manure run off!

    • Heather

Cows can 100% digest corn. They have both amylolytic and cellulolytic bacterial populations and are capable of digesting forages and grains. How big do you think cows stomachs are if you really think that the grain they are fed is just sitting there? FYI for the majority of their lives grass fed and standard cattle are raised exactly the same way. Grass fed cattle just don’t go through the final finishing process where they spend 3-4 months in a feedlot (which is meant to fatten them up and is where we get the delicious prime and choice meat cuts). Don’t even get me started on your “E. coli is from manure run off” comment….

      • Tiffany

Cows are meant to eat grass. Pumping them with PROCESSED corn isn’t normal. Watch Food inc.. wealth of knowledge there!

        • Heather

Ugh.. Like I said. Cows clearly have the ability to digest both forages and grains due to their bacterial populations. Cattle do well on grains, we wouldn’t feed it to them if it was harmful (cattle have to be healthy to grow). I have a masters degree in animal science and work on a 250 acre beef ranch. Since when did movies outweigh education?

      • Caitlin

Wow, you are WRONG. I have grown up raising cattle my entire life and my father has a degree in Ag Science, if that adds to my credibility at all. Cows’ stomachs are not meant to digest corn. If they were, they would not be able to subsist entirely on grass. Now, this is not to say that corn is not good for adding fat to beef so steaks, etc. will have the “marbled” look. Also, feed lot cattle are exactly what their name states: allowed to live on feed lots for the majority of their lives. It’s not just the last part of their lives. Grass fed beef is not only a healthy alternative, it’s a ethical one, too.

        • ryan

Amen Tiff and Caitlin, to think anything other than what was stated as truth is just what the factory farmers want you to think. it is a horrible life for factory farmed animals and no way for any living being to be treated. weather you eat meat or not (which i dont) every creature on this earth deserves to be treated humanely and ethically.

          • Jana

Ryan–I agree that every animal deserves to be treated humanely. but, have you ever, actually, seen a feedlot in person? I would suggest checking it out. The animals ARE NOT treated badly AT ALL. If anything, they are treated very very very well. Food delivered to them, constant clean water and a very humane death. Seriously, go check them out before you spout things that aren’t true!

        • Maggie

“Cows’ stomachs are not meant to digest corn. If they were, they would not be able to subsist entirely on grass.”

I can survive entirely on a diet of twinkies. Therefore my stomach cannot handle vegetables. Good thinking there…

    • Jana

My husband has a degree in Ag. Business, grew up on a cattle ranch and is in one of the most prestigeous agriculture groups in the U.S. right now. He’s studied cattle ranching all over the world…it’s effects on humans, the enviornment, feedlots, feeding corn. Corn is not harmful to cows, or us, nor are feedlots or eating meat bad for the enviornment. This misinformation being spread is outright lies. Whoever mentioned watching Food, Inc. may want to check out the website http://www.safefoodinc.com and do a little digging into what special interest group made the movie Food, Inc. You might be suprised by your findings. I say if you’re that concerned about feedlots by “reading” things on the internet maybe you should go out and check it out in person…ya know–get the information straight from the horses mouth. I know my family works hard to feed people and they are so ungrateful for the cheap and safe food supply that they have readily available for them at the grocery store and it makes me sick! We should all thanks Farmers. They are working the hardest jobs in the world to FEED YOU!

  7. Lisa

Our local vendors at Farmers Market sell it fir $4-$5 a pound for grassfed…more for organic… Check yours out. I live in Wisconsin so maybe easier to come by.

    • Kelly

I live in Wisconsin as well. What farmers market do you attend?

    • monica

I also live in WI, which farmers market do u go to?

  8. blyane

Last year it was on sale for $3.99, but still a good deal!

  9. Joanie

Grass fed beef is almost completely free of E coli……I would stock up!

    • Jana

Grass Fed beef is just as open to E. Coli as any kind of beef is. If you’re that worried about E. Coli just cook your food properly. But, it’s misinformation to say that grassfed beef is almost completely free of E. Coli. If you look at statistics ALL U.S. beef is almost completely free of E. Coli.

  10. AJ

Local is only $1 more around here, so I would rather get that and support the local farmers. It’s a good price though.

  11. Danae

Has anyone else noticed the stringy texture in grass-fed beef? I had to pulse my last batch in the food processor to get it to crumble for the pasta dish; it just sticks together. I like the taste and the ideal, but I wonder if this is true for all grass fed beef or just my supplier’s.

    • tambry

I am by no means the expert on this. Our purchase was not like that. May not be the supplier, but the processing plant.

    • Emilytwinmom

Whoever is grinding it up is not using the proper equipment. Used to happen to us when we lived up north, changed to a different supplier and never had the problem again!

  12. Elizabeth

Good deal, but not stock up deal. Spouts had it on sale for $3.77lb recently. That’s more of a stock up price for us! I guess if you don’t have a local farmer or butcher, then yes it’s a good price. What cuts are this price? Ground beef, or steaks?

    • Suzanne

This is for ground beef only according to the Whole Foods site.

  13. Sally

We buy it in bulk from our Whole Foods. When you buy 10 lbs. or more it’s only $5.09 anyday!

  14. Carlye Rankin

We recently purchased 1/2 of a cow (300 lbs) and split it with my husband’s family. Each couple only spent $375 or 2.50/lb! This was grass fed meat and from one of my best friend’s dad. I have been SO IMPRESSED with the quality of the meat. Even after browning the ground beef, I do not have to drain it at all! I love it!

I do not think I could purchase the $4.99/lb meat anymore. 😀

  15. Jami

I also am a vegetarian but buy meat for my husband and sons (age 1 and 3). I love grass fed for my little guys because it is higher in omegas and I can’t get them to eat much fish so I have to find other ways. Thanks for posting this deal!

  16. Brady's Beef

If you missed the sale, don’t forget that many growers sell direct to consumers (at a great price too). If you don’t know a grower, find one at http://www.GrassFedBeefDirectory.com or visit a local farmers’ market.
