Sent from reader, Kayla: I’m a college student, and I LOVE living with frugality. I live on campus and people have realized that I am a very frugal person. Many people have asked about the websites I use because I save so much money, and I know that everyone could use the extra money (especially us poor college students)! For that reason, I made a poster of some of my very favorite places and put it up in the hall for everyone to see! Thanks for all of the inspiration and the money saving deals! 🙂

HAPPY FRIDAY! 😀

Love it…So glad Kayla shared the poster!! 🙂

  2. Toni

That’s awesome! Great way to pay it forward 😉

  3. Cassandra

What’s the website to the free music? It’s small so I can’t read it.

    • Jaden

Pretty sure it’s grooveshark.com 🙂 But if you like music here are a couple of other good suggestions: (1) if you don’t have Spotify yet, get it. You can listen for 6 months unlimited to whole albums of artists you like… create playlists, and you can even go back and listen to a song again if you liked it (unlike Pandora). After 6 months your listening is limited unless you get a paid subscription. (2) If you are open to listen to new music, an amazing site is thesixtyone.com. You hear new music, earn *hearts* by completing music challenges (such as listen to five new songs, listen to 5 in the same genre, etc) which you can then use to bump your favorite artists up in popularity. Both of these sites are AMAZING! I’ve never tried grooveshark but I think I might check it out sometime after seeing this 🙂

      • Cassandra

        Thank you! 😀

        • Jaden

          No problem! 🙂

      • Sandra

I LOVE Spotify!! I like how it’s set up just like iTunes!

  4. Mayra

I think this is AWESOME! I would have LOVED for someone to have something like this when I was in college! I worked 4 jobs!!! LOL Thankfully now, I just have one… and I coupon 🙂

    • Joy

Same here. It would have been so cool to have these resources available back in the late 1980s/early 1990s when I was in college. Oops! I think I just dated myself. 😉 I started using coupons right out of college in 1991, but back then it was only newspaper insert coupons. No Internet back then, kiddies.

  5. Sarah H.

This is awesome… I don’t see Swagbucks on there (maybe I just need stronger glasses) — we were able to use their Amazon GIft Cards (oh, so much cheaper than Barnes and Noble!! Amazon’s new books cheaper than their used books…. Amazon used books even better! — and free shipping with Amazon Student!) to pay for all of my son’s texts.

    • kkrhw

Ah, I forgot all about swagbucks! Though, I haven’t really used it very much. How much have you gotten from them?

      • Sarah H.

Almost 32,000 points in a year and a half. Divide by 450, and multiply by 5…. and that gives you how much Amazon money we have made. Given that I only have my son as a referral, that’s not too bad — and he frequently forgets about it, too. The next time there are free business cards from Staples or Moo, I thought about making them with his referral link so he could give it to his friends so they can all save on texts. But your tear strip idea would work well, too!
Froobi once had a free Swagbucks T (pay for shipping, but get SB for purchase…). I keep telling him to wear his — that would be a great way to get referrals!

  6. Cyndi

I love this post! This post especially hits close to home for me! I’m also a college student and i do also get asked what site i use and how coupons are used. I used a lot of coupons, not just for me. I do use the coupons i don’t need and purchase them and donate them to other students who are in need as well. Even though it’s not a lot, but i know it helps.

  7. tomcatnavywife

Great post, it’s good to see younger people concerned about saving $, I remember when I was in college (early 90’s)…credit card company’s would love to sign students up for their cards, and I saw so many of my friends get in trouble for living on those cards…and trying to pay for them with little to no income…I always tell my children, if you want something save for it, by the time they save for it, most of the time they have lost interest in the item. When they were younger I was guilty of spoiling them…now they know not to ask for anything unless is on sale or a coupon is involved! =D

  8. Lori

If Kayla or someone could list the websites that are on the poster that would be great. Even when I zoom all the way in I can’t figure out what some of them say. Thanks

    • Adriana

I also see textbroker.com for writing articles to make $$, and mturk.com for doing small tasks for $

  9. Jen

This is a great idea. I’m a college student myself. Since I don’t get much help from parents like a lot of students do, I have to buy everything myself. Coupons worked out great for me and now I can get more for my money. I should do this for my friends. 🙂

  10. Janice

I have never heard of icemonkey.com til I saw it on her poster….GREAT job! LOVE IT!!! Thanks for the tip!!! 😉

  11. Lisa K.

Thanks for posting this! 🙂 Can someone post the websites listed on the poster where I can do small tasks and make $$ online? Thanks!

    • Cheryl R

mturk.com (its connected to Amazon ( you log in with your amazon password etc).

      • Lisa K.

Thanks for your help, Cheryl! 🙂 Will check that out.

  12. Aly

GREAT JOB KAYLA!!! As a college professor, and having my own 4 kids in college, I’m all for college students!

  13. Jennifer

Just wanted to say this is awesome. She took time out of her busy schedule for no benefit of her own but just to spread her knowledge to help others. What a great lady! : )

  14. Margaret

Awesome Kayla! I read a comment on Hip2Save a few weeks ago (on the topic of dumpster diving) that said:

“Anyone who lives near a university knows that privileged people are wasteful and you can find lots of good stuff in those dumpsters!”

I just graduated from UCLA a year ago and that comment is most certainly NOT accurate referring to students as “privileged people” and they are “wasteful.” Thank you, Kayla, for debunking this stereotype and showing that college kids care about saving money!

    • Danielle

The things students throw out at the end of the year is amazing. It’s definitely not everyone (obviously) but I highly doubt UCLA is the exception here.

      • Margaret

My comment was in reference to that user’s word choice of “wasteful” and “privileged.” It’s unfortunate how such diction reflects such disdain for those who have access to higher education.

  15. GINA

Thanks for sharing Kayla! As I see it, you are one huge step ahead in life as you have already learned one of the most valuable lessons of life that no textbook can teach, the value of a dollar. Keep up the good work!

  16. Jaden

I really love this, Kayla! I know for me sharing the coupon love makes it so much more fun- when you can help someone else by saving them a little bit of money it feels good! Seeing you taking so much time and effort to help your classmates save money is inspirational 🙂 I love our community of couponers!

  17. Lisa K.

I absolutely love that someone is educating other college students on how to live a thrifty life! I ran into a college student the other day in Kroger and was explaining couponing to her – the earlier in life you learn how to save money, the better! 🙂

  18. Ashley

I can see you had a lot of takers on little rip thinger lol soooo the real question is…Who on here found out through her poster??? Comment please 😀

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Lol, I’m curious to find out what was on the little papers that were on the rip thinger :).
Cool idea, I would have loved to learn about sites like this when I was in college! 🙂

      • kkrhw

I posted the answer at the bottom 😉
I should’ve just hit reply though… lol. Its a phone app that you can get points with for rewards 🙂

  19. Shannon

    Awesome job Kayla!

  20. Suzanne

Nice job Kayla! I wish I had not racked up so much credit card debit in college. They give it away like candy and I was hungry.

  21. Brandi @ Savvy Student Shopper

    Yay for frugal college students!
    😉

  22. That Frugal Girl

This is really cool! I may have to go down to my local college and do something similar! I know a lot of college kids (Hey I am only 26!) around here are struggling, and when I go to walmart I almost always walk away GETTING MONEY or Paying only the tax! I wish I could tell everyone how to save the kind of money I do and that’s why people like me and Collin here at Hip2Save have blogs! Great job!

  23. Heidi

Way to go Kayla! There were quite a few sites on there I had never heard of and I’ve been doing this over a year! Thanks a bunch.

  24. christina

SET YOUR CLOCKS BACK 🙂 Great job Kayla, thanks for the new sites and helping out your community. It takes teaching one person to teach hundreds, maybe even thousands 🙂 Passing great lessons is better than getting caught up in and passing drama. Great idea to hang up. LUV IT 🙂

  25. rebecacha

That’s funny, I am also trying to read the poster! 🙂 By the way, the tabs, what are they? Your info in case people want more details or a crash course? Congratulations! 🙂

  26. alicia

I absolutely love this poster idea! I have awful add and forget to check these places every week~ I’m going to make my own poster so I can help myself out and be more efficient! Wonderful idea! Thank you Heaps!

  27. anne

My daughther and all her roomies coupon every week, I take stacks of inserts to them and they clipp and shop each week SO proud of them

  28. Jo-Ann

    Terrific job, Kayla!

  29. Ana

Good for you. You must be a very confident person because if I did that where I went to college people would have looked at me funny. Very snobbish that way. Would have loved if someone had told me about these resources then.

I loooooooved the freebiesforu.com. I have trouble finding a single comprehensive freebies site! Thank you!

  30. kkrhw

Thanks everyone! I’m glad you all like my poster! I got a huuuge smile when I saw this got posted and when I noticed how many comments it got!

Adriana had all the websites right, under poor I put: textbroker, mturk and mypoints.

The little slips of paper were for a phone app I got, where when you go to specific restaurants (fast food!) you can take a picture and get points. Points then lead up to different prizes. The little papers had my link 😀

  31. Annie

Good job! As a recent college grad I only WISHED I didnt spend so much money eating out 🙁 But now that I’m struggling more financially, I wish I could go back and teach my old self to coupon. 🙂
