If you love to read a good book and to tell other people about it, you may want to apply to be a World Book Knight Giver.  On April 23rd, 2012, World Book Night, an annual celebration designed to spread a love of reading and books, will take place in the U.S. and U.K. and they’re looking for 50,000 volunteers to each hand out 20 copies of select books.  That means they’ll be giving away a total of 1 million FREE special World Book Night paperbacks! Wow! 😀

In order to be a book giver, you must be:

*Aged 16 or over and a resident of the U.S. (go here for the U.K. site)
*Able to pick up 20 copies of your book from your local bookshop or library
*Committed to giving your books away on World Book Night to non or light readers

How Does it Work?

*Head on over here and fill out the form to register to be a World Book Knight Giver.

*On the registration page, you’ll need to make 3 book choices and state why you’d like to participate and where you are thinking of going to give out your books.  Keep in mind that World Book Knight Givers will be chosen based on where, to whom, and why you want to give books away.

*You will be notified in early February 2012 if you have been chosen to be a book giver and which of the three books they are able to provide you with. You will then choose at which local bookstore or library you’d like to pick up your box of books ahead of World Book Night.

*Then, on April 23rd, 2012, you’ll just need to go to a coffee shop or hospital, church or community center, an after-work party or train home, shopping mall or local school — and give out 20 FREE paperbacks. Keep in mind that these paperbacks will be specially-produced, not-for-resale World Book Night U.S. editions, and there will be 30 titles for you to choose from.

I just applied for “my” school library. I do so hope I am selected! Who wouldn’t want to be a book fairy?!

  2. Danielle

maybe I am a nerd, but this is SO COOL! haha. Ender’s Game is one of my all time favorite books, and now my fathers and my brothers 🙂 And Hunger Games is on my MUST read ASAP list. There are many other great books on this list, even if I am not picked, I think this program has a lot of potential to do great things!

    • Phyllis

You will absolutely LOVE Hunger Games. I just finished it.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU COLIN! I am a librarian (and a Hip2Save regular). I also write a weekly newspaper column and I was just sitting here agonizing over a topic for next week. The writing is easy, coming up with a fresh topic each week is the hard part! This is awesome!!!!

What an amazing program. I just signed up and really hope I get picked. I would love to hand them out on the college campus where I work and give some to our local libraries!!

I would love to have to opportunity to Give away more free books. As an avid reader I already pass my books along to others who cannot afford to purchase GOOD books. As a former teacher, I know reading is so important to society. I would give away the books in my church and my small town library. Please choose me to participate.

has anyone participated in this before? (I guess it was new in the UK last year?). I’m just wondering what the costs associated with this would be. The fine print on the terms/agreements says: “Any expenses incurred in collecting the books from the pick-up point and distributing them on World Book Night are the responsibility of the giver”. Does that just mean my gas to get there/etc? (I don’t have to pay for the books or the shipping of them, right?)

    • Susan

I was wondering the same thing as you when I read the terms and conditions….maybe we are the only ones who really read the terms and conditions…but that was clearly written.

I applied; what a great program!

Such a great program! As a teacher I wish everybody on the planet could have accessibility to books, and the ability to get lost in a great one! Just a side note, but if you haven’t read The Hunger Games, read it!
