Was wondering has anyone done this before and is it worth it and is it safe?

    • Ala Makota

The pre-paid visa cards are an awesome idea – but if you don’t have one handy right now and if you happen to bank with Bank of America, there is actually a pretty cool way to avoid using your real credit card!! I’m so happy I discovered that and thought I’d share with fellow savers.

So you just need to login to your account and use this free service called “ShopSafe”. What it does it creates a temporary credit card number with exp & ccv numbers, which are always needed when making an online purchase. So I did that and I setup that temp card to exp ater 2 months (which is a minimum), although I think you may be able to go in and just delete it alltogether after you are done with the purchase.

So I used that for the coupon.com and just wanted to share! 🙂

      • Vivian B.

Great tips Ala, I used a credit card that expires at the end of the year in case I forget to cancel.

        • Mb

Discover also gives u a 1 time number

          • Mita

About the Discover one…I’ve used it to get a newspaper subscription and a year later the company was still able to charge my account to renew…I guess it wasn’t as temporary as I thought 🙁

  2. Carol Schipper

    That’s what I’m wondering too..

  3. Janelle

Wondering that too.. I am not going to sign up because I am worried that I will forget to cancel

  4. Gina

    It won’t work.

    • Gina

Got it to work after 8 trys!

  5. Kathy E.

Like Grace & Carol – anyone been using this & is it worthwhile? Hope we get some feedback. Thanks!! 🙂

  6. Aimee

Thanks Collin! Just signed up. The coupons for members are great!

    • Grace

@Aimee Do you have instant access to the coupons? And are they better than the ones we can print off without signing up?

  7. sne3103

I used a prepaid amex gift card instead of a credit card, and it went through just fine.. So I won’t have to worry about cancelling…

    • MA

Good idea. Got a prepaid card for a rebate from Staples. Was going to save to use for Aldi.

    • Kari C

It is not letting me use my prepaid, is there a trick here to use it? I used my name and zip but it says to check credit card info??

      • Kari C

I got it, the security code for an AMEX is on the front on top of the card number not the 3 digit on the back for anyone else having this issue.

        • Cyndi B

Thanks Kari, your advice worked perfectly for me!

  8. Barb

I did this and made lots of notes all over to remind me to cancel! Yes you have instant access/ There were several coupons worth more than usual, like Kellogg’s Krave $1.00, perfect for H-T super doubles.

  9. tracy

I just joined and found this

I’ve been eyeing this program for a while. I signed up- you cant beat free. Plus it is only $3 a month if you forget to cancel after a year. I have mixed feelings on the coupons. Some require you to sign up with other sites, which I think is inconvenient if I was actually paying for this service. It will be interesting to see how good of a value it is overall.

  11. Sarah P.

I signed up for the free 30-day trial when it first started, and I didn’t feel like the coupons were worth the extra $3 a month, so I cancelled. But free for a year? They’re definitely worth that! I signed back up for the free year. 🙂

  12. Kim

I used a prepaid card too. Great idea!!!

  13. Ashley57

For those of you curious – I did just sign up. It gave me the Frank’s Hot Sauce coupon online, which I did not have before (maybe it was just me). The Robitussin coupon went up in value .25 cents, from $1.00 to $1.25. For free, it seems like it will save me a little additional money.

  14. Sarah K

I just signed up– I used a “Virtual Account Number” through Mastercard, which expires about a month after it’s generated. It’ll be interesting to see what they do when the expiration date comes by, because they won’t be able to use it a year from now. I also put a reminder on my calendar. Based on the coupons on there now it’s not worth $3/month for me, but we’ll see where it goes!

    • Darla

How do you get a virtual account number through Mastercard? Thanks!

  15. Sarah

I personally don’t think its worth it. All its doing is linking you to the product’s site to sign up. You can do that without paying $3 a month. And its not a free year now. I only got a month.

    • Sarah

And I just clicked some coupons and they never printed. Now the they are gone.. >.<

  16. Rebecca

So is it one year or one month?? The post says both.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Note that the coupon states that you will receive a free 30 day trial, but when you click on it, you will be taken to a special page that offers a free one year membership. 😀

  17. Melinda

I also just signed up. I had no issues getting the one-year free offer. The coupons seem a little better with slightly higher values. They also have something on the left side of the screen called Coupon Finder. It seems to be an aggregator that links you to Manufacturer’s sites that have coupons. I clicked through a few and they seem to work just fine.

As soon as I signed up, I put a note on my calendar for next January to revisit the account and cancel if I don’t want to pay the $3 monthly fee.

  18. Jennifer

I also used a prepaid card. I had an american express prepaid card I got for Christmas. I don’t think I have much left on the card if anything but it still worked fine. I have wanted to try this out so am happy to have seen this post!!! Thanks =)

  19. AG

Is this gone now? I’m not seeing it under professional services.

    • AG

Never mind. It just doesn’t appear on Swagbucks’ link to coupons.com. 🙁

  20. Molly

I signed up and then logged off. Now I logged in again and the member coupons are gone. Do we only get one chance to see them and print and then they are taken from the account?

    • Sheryl Brazier

I am having the same problem

  21. DrLadybug

I have good news and bad news about this offer.

The good: They WILL send you an email reminders before charging your credit card, in case you forget a whole year from now (i.e., I signed up for the full year back in September 2011, which included the free 30 days, and even though I was already paid up, they still send a reminder notice).

The bad: Unless they have changed drastically, the coupons were not worth it (yes, even for just $3, or $2.50 if you paid for a year). It was disappointing to have the “member” offers be click-throughs (i.e., get them free and not be a paying member), DVD offers, and the same – relatively non-useable – coupons month after month (it was good at first, but the offers did not change drastically).

  22. Brandy

I used an old American Express giftcard…has a zero balance but it doesn’t expire until 2020 so I have been using that for these “zero payment” deals. I figured it is worth signing up for free…even if the coupon is 25 cents higher…that is 25 cents I didn’t spend! Thanks for the heads up!

    • Brandy

By the way…I am pretty excited about the BOGO Greenworks coupon and the $1.50 off Freschetta pizza coupon! Thanks Collin! 🙂

      • mel

Me too, but mine has like a .60 balance or so, and I always use it when there’s a deal that requires a CC and I have a 0 payment due.

Also super excited about the Freshetta, should make for cheap single serve pizza.. I think they’re like $2.xx at Target now (for the longest they were $1.66-$1.99 but noticed the price hike last time I was roaming around)

        • Tomoko

They don’t let me sign up with balance zero giftcard 🙁 .

          • Kathy E.

Agreed – I tried & it said the CC declined the card to try another one. Oh well, will pass on this one.

            • Tomoko

I even tried with Amex GC with $25 balance but no go. I have to let it go this one too.

            • Crystal

Same problem, would not take a prepaid credit card. I ended up using my regular cc, & it will notify you when you need to cancel

    • Kari C

HI, I am trying to use a prepaid AMEX card and I get Please check credit card fields to make sure they are correct?? ANy ideas?

      • mel

Make sure you are putting in the 4 digit SSN # on the front of the card, NOT the 3 digit # on the back. That’s what I did the first 2 times and it kept telling me the same thing about checking the card fields. Once I fixed the SSN#, it went through.

  23. tish

I am SO excited about this HIP deal 🙂 i’ve been wanting to try this for so long, but of course, wouldn’t PAY for it!! now i can test drive it for free for a year and decide if it is worth it, and i’m really excited so far about the extra high dollar coupons – so far, i’m impressed!

  24. Marissa

If you are using an Amex giftcard what do you put in for the zipcode?

  25. Janie

Yay! I’ve wanted to try this, but didn’t want to waste money if it wasn’t worth it. Thank you, Collin!

  26. Lynette

Can you access the member coupons through swagbucks or only through the coupons.com site?

  27. Mary

I second Drladybug’s comments. I tried this offer last month and didn’t feel that it was worth $3. I thought as a paying member I would get access to coupons before they were put out to the public but that is not the case. The savingsstar coupons were not that great and I don’t think I even used many to get my $$’s worth. At least those that sign up now will get a free year to try the service out.

  28. Betty

I’m going to try it out.

  29. Cyndi B

I used a prepaid Amex card purchased from the store (blank with no name on the card). I put in my own name and zipe code, and used the 4-digit code on the front (as advised by other posters, THANK YOU!!!!), and it went through perfectly! I figured if it was free, what did I have to lose? I know I will use this giftcard up long before my year is up so there is no risk whatsoever. THANK YOU COLLIN!!!!!

  30. Melissa

how do u get back in once you’ve closed out? i can’t “login” at coupons.com…?? TIA!

  31. Julia

Since I’ve signed up, it hasn’t shown me that I’ve reached a print limit on any coupon, BUT if I try to print one I know I printed twice before, it won’t work. It says it’s printing, but it’s not. Has anyone else seen this?

  32. brandy

I am a member of the Coupon Savings Club. However, I cannot get the $2 off the Glad Trash Bag Coupon. The highest it goes is $.75. I even used 33313 zip code.
