If you’re planning on watching American Idol tonight, don’t forget to earn points through Viggle!  I’ve posted a few times now about Viggle, a FREE app for the iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad that rewards you for watching TV regularly, and I’m still amazed at all the positive comments and emails that I continue to receive regarding this cool app! ๐Ÿ™‚ In fact, check out the email and photo I recently received from reader Kelli:

My husband and I downloaded the Viggle app after seeing it posted on Hip2Save. Right away we were hooked. We decided to have a common goal and started saving our points for Best Buy gift cards. One month after installing the app, we had $175 in Best Buy Gift Cards! We could have kept going and paid nothing out of pocket, but the Tv was on sale for $279 (reg $399!). We were so proud of ourselves for saving so much money, all thanks to Viggle & Hip2Save!

Remember, with Viggle, you will earn points just for watching your favorite TV shows and can then redeem your points for rewards – and your points can really add up!  Some of the rewards include FREE music downloads, Fandango movie tickets, gift cards to stores/restaurants like CVS, Target, Chili’s, Starbucks’, Best Buy, Old Navy, Burger King, Sephora, and lots more!

With that being said, be sure to download this FREE app and use it while watching TV this week!  If you’re a regular Viggle user, what rewards have you scored?

(Thanks, Kel!)

Anyone know of anything similar for Android?

    • Jessica

I think they said it would be released soon.

    • Cindy

About a week ago, Viggle said that the Android app would come out in four to six weeks. However, they’ve said that for the past couple of months. Viggle has had issues, both with the app and with the way members use/abuse the app, so I think they’re trying to work out the bugs before adding hundreds of thousands of new members from the Android market.

  2. anay

Im in love with this app. Im saving my points hoping the Amazon gift cards come back soon. If not, im planning on getting enough Best Buy gift cards to buy myself a Kindle ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Audrey

I LOVE VIGGLE!! It is the first app I put on my new iphone. In one month, I have earned 6 movie tickets, $15 in Chili’s gift cards, and $10 in CVS gift cards!

  4. northernmichigancoupongirl

    I LOVE Viggle – I’ve redeemed for $50+ in Sephora GC’s and iTunes GC’s for ME ๐Ÿ™‚

I LOVE this app!! Seeing the info about this app on your site, helped make up my mind to get an ipad ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Sommer Higgins Celmer

We have this app to and have been getting the Best buy gift cards. So far we have gotten a Ninetendo Wii Game system, a 4 remote charging dock, a 32″ Dynex LCD tv for our kids’ playroom and a $25 gift card for Amazon. We only spent $29 out of pocket for al these things thanks to Viggle. Now we are saving our Best Buy gift cards for a gas grill.

    • Shanna

How long have you had the app? That sure is a lot of big cost items to be able to accumulate after only a couple of months. Do you use more than one device to get points?

      • martha

i think because last february a lot of extra points tv like the superbowl, academy award, grammy and american idol every week.in march the daytona 500.also in the beginning viggle have a lot of trivia.HTH

  9. Vicki

I know that they are developing an app for android but I’m not sure when it will be out. I would think soon though. What I’m wondering if anyone knows that once you receive a gift card, if they expire. Or, after a certain amount of time do they start dwindling down. Does anyone know? I’d like to turn points in for giftcards when they are on sale, then save them to make a larger purchase, that’s why I need to know if they expire, thanks!

    • lorelei

under each reward it has terms and conditions. you should read the t&c of the specific gift card you want to be sure! ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. Mandi

I adore this app!! My son is learning a great lesson on earning! He downloaded it and is now has $300 toward the Ipad he wants. My viggles get free Starbucks, Chilis and movie tickets. FYI if you use it to get Starbucks cards it’s like getting double dipping ๐Ÿ™‚ When you load them onto your Starbucks app it goes toward getting more free coffee and add-ins.

    • lorelei

i love my starbucks gold card! ๐Ÿ˜€ I always load my viggle e gift cards onto my starbucks card ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. Key

i love this app…just the idea of getting rewarded for doing something i already do!!! at first, i was saving my points to try for the kindle…but it’s gone. so now i’ve used points to get Sephora gift cards. But after reading this, I may need to just get Best Buy gift cards because I could use a new TV! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • martha

they have kindle fire now but it’s 375.000 points

  12. Chastity Branham

I love Viggle! I first heard about it from your post on this site. I have gotten $150 in best buy gift cards in about a month. Saving for an ipad! Thanks for posting about it!

  13. mary

Lol, they bought a new TV by watching TV…that’s awesome! They can consider it an investment in their new “business” and deduct it at tax time (just kidding!) ๐Ÿ˜€

  14. Rebecca T.

So how exactly does the app know what shows you are watching??

    • Ashley

You click to “check in” and the app listens to the tv and pulls up the show. You just confirm thats the show you are watching! Even if you DVR’d something you can do it!

      • Amanda

What if I watch a DVR’d show like a month after it originally aired? Is that too late?

  15. mary

Is there any way to do this through Apple TV? Anyone know?

  16. Sharon

Wow! I had no idea the rewards were so high! Do you have to watch TV nonstop to get that many rewards? Lol

I hope that the Android app comes out before they change the set-up!

    • lorelei

Well, you can only get tv watching points for 12 hours a day. I usually check in if i’m watching throughout the day, or I check the “what’s on” tab because if you check into those you get bonus points (it’s usually 120pts/hr). Also, on the ‘what’s on” tab, you only have to “watch” 10 minutes of the show to get the bonus points (so you can change the chanel after 10 minutes and check into another “what’s on”/bonus show. Also, there are random commericals that you can watch for points (i usually just let them play when I’m doing something else/can just set my ipod aside while they play) and also sometimes you can answer trivia to get points. It’s really not that hard, you can just flip on your tv while you’re doing something else to check in you don’t ACTUALLY have to watch the tv.

  17. Valerie L.

My new goal is to save up enough Viggle points and Swagbucks to buy a patio set at Lowe’s.

Just in case people didn’t know, The aggregate value of the rewards (not including any prizes you may win in sweepstakes or in instant win games) that any individual user of our service may receive during a calendar year is limited to U.S.$550.

  18. jen m

I love viggle it rocks. I was able to take my daughter out to a free 3D movie of the lorax. I’ve gotten 3 starbucks cards. for 5 dollars each. a 25 dollar best buy gift card. A burger king 5 dollar e-gift card for my hubby the other day when he had to have a whopper. I’ve only had the app for almost 2 months now. I’m hopeing they bring there 25 dollar target card back.

  19. Laurie

Once you check in on Viggle, do you have to keep your phone in the app during the entire show? Just confused how it all works!

    • Brittany

No, you don’t have to stay “in” the app for it to work. Once you check in, you are good to go. The app will notify you after the show is over and your points have been added.

      • Laurie

        Thanks for the info!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. Erin

I love this app!! Earned 100 dollars in CBS cards!

  21. Erin

Btw you can buy amazon gift cards w BB Gift cards. Done it twice now. They say they are Kindle cards but they also work on regular amazon! I love this app and it was H2S who turned me on to it!

    • sne3103

Wow Erin, you made my day! I have been waiting forever for the amazon cards to come back in stock… Now I’ll just buy the Best Buy instead.. Thanks for the tip!

    • ana

So do you buy them in store or online?

    • angie

Do you print them out to use in store or can u show them your phone to use the BB gift cards?

      • ana

You print it out or use it online.

  22. Fabulously Frugal In Florida

I Wish they had somthing like this for andriod users ๐Ÿ™

  23. Brittany

I love Viggle! I’ve kept my Starbucks addiction well fed with the GC’s it gets me! I’m banking points right now in hopes that a Target or Amazon GC will make a come back!

  24. Mella

I use this app daily and I love it!! After seeing it on hip2save I downloaded it and have already redeemed 2 $5 starbucks cards and 1 jcpenny $10 card. Thanks hip2save!!

  25. Cassie

I love this app too! Thanks to H2S posting about this app, I’ve gotten movie tickets & CVS gift cards and I’ve only had it about a month. I usually have the tv on throughout the day anyway so why not get rewarded for it? I’m trying to get my son into it so he can save up for a new iPod touch since he has to use my old iPhone. Thanks again Collin!

  26. Kim

I’ve been using Viggle since one of the first posts here on Hip2Save. I’m still racking up the points and saving them for a bigger payout. I’ve got my eye on the Kindle. Now thinking I could do the same with Best Buy Cards….

    • Lori

The Kindle Fire they have right now is 375,000 points, but if you redeem for best buy,
you would only need 300,000 for $200, which I believe is the retail of the Kindle Fire.

  27. Rachel

I LOVE this ap! I’m saving up points with the hopes of getting free wooden floors for my living room with the Lowe’s gift cards! I average a $5 gift card per day so I’m well on my way!

  28. Jenny

Can anyone answer the question of whether or not your phone has to stay on that app once you’ve checked in? Pretty please?
    Thanks!

    • Annie

Nope! I just check in and make sure that it has the show that I’m checked in to on the upper left hand corner. Once I know I am checked in, I just close the app. I don’t think it drains your battery too much, but I always close my apps to save my battery life! ๐Ÿ˜€

    • Jessica

No. Once you’ve checked in you don’t have to stay “in” the app. You’ll get a notification when the show is over and how many points you earned. Then you can go back in and check into another show & start over.

You DO, however, have to stay in the app and in VIGGLE LIVE to play during VIGGLE LIVE.

  29. Marie S.

How are some of you able to earn so many points? I have been a user for a month now and have earned about 29,000 points, which equates to about $20 in gift cards. That is still an okay amount, but while the app worked beautifully for the first two weeks, the last two have been quite a hassle.

Several times I have watched an in app video and the points have not been credited. To make matters worse, I am only receiving a portion of the points for watching the shows. I have had a few where it can’t detect the show at all (although most work after 3-4 tries), or more commonly it cuts off halfway through the show and awards a portion of the total points.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated! I have an iPhone 4S and keep it on the arm of the couch during the show with the app open.

    • Jessica

I’m not sure on all of that.. But when it can’t detech the show you can just search for it and you still get the points.

    • Kaitlyn

You should contact the Viggle customer service via their email. I had a couple problems and they emailed me back about it in less than an hour.

  30. Emily

I have been using Viggle for about 3 or so weeks and I have earned enough for $20 in Lowe’s gift cards. We have to buy a new oven sometime soon, and every little bit helps!

  31. Meg

Do they allow you to use this on the nook? I have an ipod touch but I don’t have wifi here.

  32. Andrea

Question I currently only watch TV on hulu as most TV shows aren’t child appropriate and I won’t watch them with my children. Will this app still work if you aren’t watching the shows live??

    • Melony

Yes. You can watch shows from Dvr. I tape the shows with the most points to check into.

      • Aimee

Melony, How do you know what shows have the most points? – Aimee

        • lorelei

under the “what’s on” tab on the bottom left.

      • Andrea

Thank you so much! I am going to have to look into that!!

  33. Kaitlyn

Thanks to H2S for telling me about this app. I started Feb. 4th and last week I was able to redeem my points for four $25 Best Buy gift cards. I kept waiting for the Amazon gift cards to come back but gave up. The App is my absolute favorite!

    • Tim

if you have a best buy nearby, you can actually use the best buy gift card in store to purchase an amazon kindle gift card, which will work on anything on the site!

  34. Mrspurple

If you don’t mind, can someone explain how it works?
Does the app listen to the TV to confirm the show you are watching?
Does one have to watch the show live (with commercials)? Is that how they make their money, making sure you watch the commercials?

Just wondering.. in case they do come out with the Android one soon…

    • Denise

Yes, it “listens” to your TV. It sometimes doesn’t hear mine and I have to do a search within the app to get the points. And I close the app after I check in so I’m not burning my battery. Only with Viggle LIVE do you have to keep the app open.

      • Meg

So you play your regular tv and have your ipod listen to it? Thanks for the info!

        • lorelei

yep. but you only need to let your ipod listen until it “checks in.” a thumbnail of the show logo should appear in the top left corner of your screen with a check mark over it to confirm that you’ve checked in. After checking in, you can turn off the app and even sleep the ipod and you’ll still get points! ๐Ÿ˜€ you don’t have to keep it on for the whole show ๐Ÿ™‚

      • shanney

I have an older i pod that i believe does not have a speaker. Does anyone know if it will work? I was able to put the app on the i pod just haven’t done anything else.

  35. Juli

I just cashed in $170 in lowes gift cards for a new kitchen faucet. In addition I have cashed in $50 worth of iTunes. Love, love this app!

  36. Beth

I got a $10 JCP giftcard and haven’t been using it for very long

  37. Janie

I LOVE this app! Have gotten many CVS and Target gift cards. I tell the cashiers to download it. I think I’m going to save for a TV from Best Buy now ๐Ÿ™‚

  38. Joy

This sounds too good to be true … there has to be some catch? Like giving up some sort of privacy somehow … I dunno.

    • Tiffany

well Joy…It says that anything you submit (information documents…etc.) becomes their property without your permission and they do not owe you any credit for the ideas or info etc. It works by listening to your tv. I am not a conspiracy theorist of anything, but I wonder what all it is listening too…. hmm. All that said, I am still using it.

  39. Jeff

We have a gold card through Starbucks, which discounts our drinks and then sends us a free drink with every 15 drinks. With the Viggle app, I can get $5 gift cards which then can be transferred to my gold card. We visit the Starbucks several times a week and have not paid for a drink since downloading this app. It really is the best app I have.

    • lorelei

same here! ๐Ÿ˜€ i love gold card!

  40. Shaun

If I’m watching a show on dvr from say a week ago ….is allinhave to do just tap check in like normal? Tia ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Melony

You only get the extra points from stuff that is watched in the first week, after the next episode is aired you only get the points for a normal show. You need to make sure you check your check in’s after you check in, I have noticed lately that it will not put in the right episode and then you have to recheck in.. Hope this helps!

    • lorelei

Also, on the viggle website, it says for best (most accurate) results, you should check in to recorded shows within 7 days of the first air date!

  41. Susan F.

You can watch shows on your DVR or hulu and still get points. However, if it doesn’t recognize the show, you can only search for shows that are currently on. I also think it doesn’t give you as many points as you get further away from the air date. I watch almost all my tv through DVR, so I wish it worked a little better. I am up to almost 17,000 points after a month and a half. I am curious how people amass so many points. I feel like I watch a lot of tv.

    • Lindsey

It doesn’t work for my DVR’d stuff

  42. Nicole

I have the app, but have always wondered if you only get points for the shows they showcase under the “what’s on” tab or if it’s for all television shows and if so, how many points?

    • Marie S.

You get around 60 points for watching a show that isn’t one of their featured shows.

    • Lori

You can watch anything, I think it is something like 2 points for every minute you are
checked into a normal show. (you get more if it is one of their featured shows) There
is a list of the channels it will listen to and recognise the shows, if the channel isn’t
on that list, after two attempts to match it, it will let you type in the name of the show.

    • lorelei

the “what’s on” tab is only shows that have a bonus. Any show you check into is worth 120points/hour (or 2 points per minute, as Lori said).

However, if (for example) American Idol is on the “What’s on” tab for 300, after checking into American Idol and “watching” for 10 minutes, you get 300 points PLUS the 2points/minute you would regularly get for the show.

      • Nicole

How do they know how long you’re checked into a show? I always just go to a show, check in, and then go to the next show. I never knew you needed to continue watching the show. How does giggle know that you’re still checked into a show after it’s done “listening”?

  43. Leo

I am saving up for a new stove. have $300+ in reward points

  44. vergin

you can watch video and get some more points

  45. rcsmooch

I tested it with Dancing with the Stars on Hulu and it recognized it. I tried an older episode of another show and it didn’t work, but I think the website said it had to be an episode within 7 days. I’ll have to experiment, but this is great for me because I watch a lot on Hulu since I don’t want to watch some shows in front of my kids. ๐Ÿ™‚

  46. Connie Bridges

Can you use it on a laptop???

  47. rin

I follow Viggle on twitter and they recently posted about abuse. I think that is how some people are accumulating so many points. Keep watching an ad over and over again, etc. Hopefully this doesn’t force them to change amount of points rewarded or change the app completely. I use this app everyday and am not seeing these levels of reward redemptions. It is a great app though! I’m happy with the few gift cards I have gotten.

    • lorelei

Yeah, I recently saw on their website that they have limited events (i.e., getting points from watching ads) to only giving points only twice a day.

  48. Ashley

I LOVE this app, I earn a $5 giftcard each week ๐Ÿ™‚ So far I’ve gotten 2 lowes giftcards and 1 hot topic giftcard! Free money is free money! ๐Ÿ˜€

  49. Savannah

I so wish this were available for android. I’d be all over it.

  50. Rosemary

My son is signing up on his I-phone touch but it is asking for a t.v. provider. What does that mean? what do you put if it is on a hand-held item?
    Any one know?

    • Rosemary

I don’t have any of those required Apple products, i only have Android. Hopefully they will come out with an app. for that.

But i had to tell my son about this.

He is excited and will try if he can access it though. See my above comment.

      • martha

i think like direct tv,comcast or dish network

        • Rosemary

Thank you so much for your help:) I thought that since he had an I-pod Touch that was “his” provider. But he thought it was more like what you had said.

So, he put Comcast and it is working:) He is already earning points and i am soooo excited for him. He lives on his own and (i am a regular member of Hip2save faithfully) and i told him about this….. so he can earn points and now he can have a little extra “spending money” for him and his girlfriend too!

He is excited too, he is telling his friends about it too!

          Thank you again!

    • Cindy

Viggle needs the name of the TV provider for your household in order to give the correct options for TV programming in your area. You watch shows on your TV and check in using the app on your iPod Touch or iPhone.

      • Rosemary

Thank you kindly for your help as well!

He likes to watch a lot of different shows on his down time.

This is sooooo cool that i am jealous that it is not on Android….but hopefully soon:)

        Thank you again!

    • Lisa

Your provider is either your cable company, satellite company or antenna. HTH
