HOT! Getting Toasty! Lukewarm Starting To Melt Ice Ice Baby

Back in January 2011 (so over a year ago – boy time flies!), I posted about my splurges and also asked what you all splurged on. It definitely made for lots of discussion in the comment section and was fun to read. I think it was also great for me to see that you all splurge as well since we frugalistas tend to sometimes feel guilty over splurges.

So, once again, I think it’s time to have a splurge discussion! 🙂

Being a coupon and deal blogger, I get emails from people all the time thinking somehow I use coupons on every single item I buy and never pay full price for anything. Well, that is honestly very, very far from the truth. I do use coupons when and where I can. I do try to negotiate deals and pay far below the retail cost for lots of items. However, I am not able to do this in all aspects of my life.

First, think how overwhelming and very time-consuming it would be to try to scrimp and save in all areas. Think about how stressful it would be to constantly try to make sure you never pay full retail for ANYTHING. I could never do that and truthfully, I wouldn’t want to do that.

There is something to be said about splurging! It is, well, kinda freeing. When you’re taking the time to save money and use coupons, then you also deserve to take some time for an occasional splurge. Plus, think about it like dieting. When you diet and restrict your food intake, what do you end up doing? I know what I do – BINGE… Cake, donuts and ice cream become my best friend! Same goes for restricting your budget to the point where you have no wiggle room. Sooner or later a spending binge will ensue. Trust me… I have been there more than once! 😉 In my opinion, moderation is key.

So with that being said, here are my favorite splurges:

*Designer denim (Yes, I like my jeans!)
*Coffee/lattes/cappuccinos (I try to use coupons, but there have been times when I’ve paid full price!)
*Pedicures
*Bumble & Bumble hair care products
*
Apple products (I can’t live without my Macbook!)
*
Vitamix
*
CrossFit (I started doing this at the beginning of the year and am lovin’ it, so worth the membership fee – IMO. And definitely is a great way to start the morning! OK, I may not think that the morning of. 😉 )

Now what about YOU?! What are your splurges?

    I’m not a girly-girl at all, (but I love makeup……so) I’ll splurge on:
    MAC cosmetics
Makeup brushes (if anyone knows of some good high quality brushes that are less than MAC please do mention!)
    Hair (color/cuts/products)
    Boots

My splurges seem a little pathetic after reading everyone else’s exciting splurges, Lol! Anyway, here they are!!

*Nashville Predators Hockey Gear: Love my Preds and I ususally get a new sweatshirt or t-shirt or such at the beginning of Hockey Season each year

*Cheese: My hubs and I are huge cheese fans, so we occasionally hit Whole Foods and get a couple of chunks of good cheese as a treat

*Better Homes & Gardens and Scentsy Wax Melts: They smell so good and make our home feel so warm and comfortable to me

Ingredients for Our Indian Food Dinners: Our favorite food is Indian, but we enjoy making it so much more than going our for it and we’ve found that by buying authentic ingredients from the local Indian Mart our food tastes so much better. By doing this, we’ve found that spices such as Cinnamon, Black Pepper, Cumin and such that we use in all our cooking are much cheaper there than at chain stores

*Crocs flipflops (I made a mistake of getting into a store at an outlet mall and walked out with 4 pairs for my family. I regret the purchase and tried to return them. That changed after we all tried them and agreed they were the comfiest flipflops we ever had.)
*Starbucks (I don’t really drink coffee, but I get cravings a few times a year.)
*Resort hotel (We add a night at a gorgeous hotel at the end of our vacation after saving money at an average hotel with credit card points.)
*Victoria Secret bras (That’s all I wore for a few years. However, that’s about to change because I learned that mass merchandizers offer quality bras now.
*Fitness clothes and shoes (I train for triathlon, so it is important to have a good quality items. But my good quality is not super expensive brands. I can still get them at deeply discounted prices.)
*My boys’ sporting goods, clothes and shoes (My boys are award-winning runners and they are involved in several different sports. So, my first priority is this one over all the others listed.)

I try not to splurge too much, but when I do:

    – Pedicures/Shellac Nails – sometimes a lady just needs a little bit of luxury!! (my favorite splurge!)

    – Starbucks – once every blue moon, you just need more than a plain cup of coffee

    – Makeup (MAC & Clinique) – my face breaks out so easy, so sometimes I am forced to buy the good stuff, even though I’m sure my wallet would like something cheaper.

    • Jen

      Hi Rachelle-
My face breaks out easily too. I used to use Clinique and Zoderm (from my dermatologist but they are no longer making it). I recently tried Mary Kay and so far I am very happy with the results. It costs a little less than Clinique and I don’t have to run to the store to refill. Email me at JenFish19@yahoo.com if you want more info about what has helped me.

Splurge?! Oh how I love and hate this word all at the same time::

    – GOOD hair products. (Biolage, CHI, Rusk,..) I know there are so so many coupons and great deals for common hair care but I am convinced the more expensive brands treat my hair better. I even have my husband convinced!! I head to TJMaxx, pick up 4 large bottles of whichever brand they have in stock, spend about $60.00 and never regret a dime spent. The 4 large bottles (2 shampoo, 2 conditioner) will last my husband and I right around 6 months. For SURE worth it 🙂

I love to splurge on …TRAVEL, TRAVEL AND MORE TRAVEL. I work in a school so once summer comes, get out the suit cases and let’s go. Sometimes we camp (and save some cash), but most of the states I need are very far from Pa. I’m on a mission to visit and stay overnight in each and every state. I have 7 more to go. Not sure where I’m going yet this summer, but I still have Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oklahoma, Colorado, Utah and North Dakota to visit.

I love saving money so alot of times its hard for me to splurge, but i do have a few things that i can’t live with out… my 09 infiniti coupe i love infiniti’s this is my fourth and its the only car brand i can see in my future…… random weekends away with the hubby… and my coach purses and sunglasses!

  10. SIDLEE

I love perfume. And I have over 40 or so kinds. I have some still in boxes that I have not used and one kind that is no longer available I have 2 still in box as a back up!!

  11. Ashley

MOVIES! I have a ridiculous collection of them, movies & tv shows. I’m trying to stop, or at least stop with the tv shows bc I rarely watch those anymore.. but i just can’t help it sometimes. I mean sure, I might buy some of them when they’re on sale or at least use my employee discount if bought at Meijer… but still it definitely adds up.

i know this thread is getting old and probably forgotten by now but could someone please tell me which brands would even be considered ‘DESIGNER JEANS’ nowadays? i’m not old enough to be as out of touch as i am but well, i am so where might a non designer jean wearing gal find designer jeans to even try on?

help, i want to love designer jeans!

    thanks:)
