I just bought the slightly larger one from Home Depot (GE’s 8.8 cu ft) and I price matched Lowe’s price of $350. Home Depot was awesome! I’m hoping the freezer is a good size for storing bulk meat – the 7 cu ft is TINY in my opinion!!!

I wish this was not manual defrost.

    • Peg

I was told that with a deep freezer you WANT a manual defrost. If it were a self defrost then the items wouldn’t stay as long, just like in your regular freezer. You want the frost to build up inside the chest, that is what keeps things really frozen. Depending on where you live, you defrost it once a year, in the winter so you can place your items outside in a cooler until the freezer is defrosted.

      • Gordon Barber

Actually the ice build up in the freezer acts as an insulator. So it does not keep it colder. I do refrigeration for a living. A freezer should go through a defrost period of 15-30 min. every 6 hrs. So it does not build up but yet keeps every thing frozen. It may be different in home appliances.? Don,t think it should be though

    • Estel

Manuel defrost is better. It IS more work…but in the end the food you are storing lasts much longer since the freezer is not lowering it’s temperature enough to melt ice accumulation, thus letting your food partially defrost as well and freezing it again.

    • milly

Thanks, but I personally prefer the frost free because I live in an apartment, no area to manually defrost a freezer.

      • Laura

You probably shouldn’t get a separate freezer then, unless you eat a lot of frozen foods. Foods would just go bad in the freezer. Maybe you could get a 5 cubic foot one that you could take out of your apartment to defrost? Most (if not all) separate freezers have manual defrost. Another alternative would be to use the scraper that comes with it to just scrape off the inside when it gets frosty. I’ve had mine over a year and I haven’t defrosted it and probably won’t this summer.

        • milly

That’s what I was thinking.. Or maybe save for a frost free. I don’t have a big family, but when sales are good, I always wish I had a big freezer=P

          • Laura

Definitely! I bought it because of a good sale on food! I’ve been shopping for appliances, it seems like many, and awesome deals seem to be few and far between!

      • Estel

I live in a one bedroom condo…pretty much the same issue here. I’m just going to put a pan or a bucket (whatever I can fit) under the nozzle and shuffle that to the sink a little at a time. You can make it work if you really want/need it.

I bought this freezer the last time it was on sale at Home Depot and it’s great. The delivery was actually 2 weeks early which was a great surprise! If you have the money and are in the market for a freezer, this is a great one and Home Depot was great to work with!

  5. Su

This freezer is not energy star.

    • Laura E

      So what????

      • Kristen

I think she was just stating that fact, in case anyone who was considering buying the freezer cares 🙂 She didn’t say no one should buy it because it’s not energy star, just letting people know it’s not so they can factor that in to their decision. That’s important to some people!

        • milly

That’s also how I see it.

    • Laura

I have this freezer it had a tag on it that said the operating costs for one year was something ridiculously low like $7 FOR THE YEAR! It’s been a nice little freezer, but if I was to buy again, I would get an upright, it’s much easier to find things in an upright. This freezer is so deep you have to really dig to get to things at the bottom. The baskets aren’t very big, only about 6 inches deep. I bought it last year when Target had buy any 5 (or 7?) frozen items, get a free $5 gift card. It’s a good sized freezer though, I rarely have it completely full but often have it close to full for my family of four (young kids). If I had teenagers, I’d want larger.

      • Laura

Oh and I’ve been watching the price of this freezer for quite a while (I always like to see if I should have waited and would have got a better deal). This is the lowest by far that I have seen this.

      • erin

In the product info it says it is estimated to cost $30/year to run. This definately is not bad since my husbands minifridge he uses to keep beer cool in the garage is estimated to cost $37/year to run.

I personally like this website because I find the readers to be helpful and respectful of each other. Lately though, I noticed a lot of trolls. This is supposed to be a happy website care of Collin. Pls. try to keep the friendly environment.

      • Estel

All due respect (really, honestly, not trying to be snotty here at ALL)…you must not be very active on the internet if you think THIS website has trolls. Oh sweetie…you don’t know the meaning of the word.

This website has some of the kindest, most respectful users you could ask for. It’s ironic…since I was just thinking this to myself not two days ago.

        • Shanshan

Agree Estel. Ha ha! Just go to any manufacturer’s facebook pages, those ones that’s been giving out coupons, then you’ll see some really nasty comments I wish I’d never hear in real life! And yes people on H2S are nice!

        • milly

It’s all good, Estel I didn’t take offense on your comment=)
Just to clarify, like I said, I find that the readers here are nice, friendly & respectful. With an exception of a few which I noticed in the past 2-4 weeks. Maybe you didn’t catch those past comments, but don’t worry they are not worth reading anyway =P

    • Em

🙁 I know!! I’ve really been watching my energy consumption lately. Got my electric bill down to $80 which is awesome for around here (we don’t have anything gas powdered, just electric).

  6. Estel

Oh sweet…I’ve been wanting a chest freezer for over a year. This price is great and I think I may have finally talked my husband into it. We live in a condo, so getting this would require getting rid of our little used kitchen table to make enough space. Oh decisions…

    • Sarah

I rent a house that has a small dinning room and I have mine along the wall and when I have parties or lots of food I use it a serving area.

      • Estel

Good thinking to utilize the surface area for something useful! Wouldn’t work for us since our dining area already houses a large eight person table with very little wiggle room left but I tip my hat to your creativity. =)

    • Maria S

If you have a decent size family, I would say go for the freezer. I live in a two bedroom condo with my husband and two little children, and having the deep freezer and buying meat when its on sale has been the biggest budget helper!! My husband is the only bread winner in the family and is going back to school, and people ask us all the time how do we manage to survive on such a tiny budget. I have my deep freezer in the small dining room next to where the kitchen counter ends. So my little table fits nicely in that area. (Before without the deep freezer, my shopping trips were $150 week or more and that was just at one store) Now I spend about $75 a week and thats because my children love to drink milk and bread and its to pick up meat too. This website and my coupon friend has made living on a tight budget possible! Thank you all!!!

      • Em

Have you tried making your own bread? It’s so yummy and takes like 5 minutes of your time (if you have a bread machine). I calculated it out one time and I save like $25 a month!!! (I bought really good organic bread) And that’s only counting loaf bread! I no longer buy pizza crust or cinnamon roles or anything! You can even make pretzel dough, though you have to cook those in the oven. It’s seriously awesome!

    • Estel

Just made the purchase…so excited! FYI, you could very well be charged sales tax. Not sure if this might different for other states but I live in NJ and got hit with it. However…shopathome is offering 6% cash back up from 4%!

  7. Sarah

I bought this one from Home Depot last year. I love it! It comes with 2 baskets that is great keep the chocolate for somas in! I is so large, you can get a smaller on for the same price but why. Anytime meats or anything frozen goes on sale I try to stock up. I bought 2 large bags of ice from Sams Club I keep in there too for partys and coolers. Great thing to get if you want to save on food costs.

  8. mary

This is great timing!. I have been looking at getting a freezer for at least a year. great price and free delivery. yeah!

  9. CyndiB

I just bought this freezer three days ago… It was delivered today. Hopefully the store will give me credit for the difference. Waiting to hear from the manager; THANKS COLLIN!!!! I would have never known!

  10. Jessie

We’ve had this freezer for about 6 months and are very happy with it. I was worried it wouldn’t be big enough, but it holds way more than I expected. I’m an OCD nerd, so I keep a freezer inventory sheet beside it and keep it loaded well, so it’s easy to get what I need. I was worried about the energy consumption getting one of these, but I haven’t even noticed a change in our bill. I wish it had been this price when we bought ours! 🙂

    • sheyanne

Actually, that is a good idea. We just ordered ours and I might have to do this. It would be a great way to keep track of what you’re getting low on.

  11. tammy

Thanks Colin. Had been trying to talk my husband into one and bought this one today. Great price!

  12. Kristin

Good timing, we live in Duluth, MN…the city that was washed away by floods on Wednesday. Our basement and all the appliances within – washer, dryer, freezer, dehumidifyer were all destroyed. We didn’t even get the worst of it, but got hit pretty bad. We have a new baby and can’t really afford to replace the $400 one we just bought a few months ago. Ugh..but I think this will work for us. Thank you Collin!

  13. leisa

ive been thinking of an upright freezer. i have a small freezer and think it might be easier to get in and organize?

    • Estel

The thing you have to consider with an upright freezer is this, YES…things would be somewhat easier to get to since you don’t have to “dig”…HOWEVER…the reason chest freezers are better/more popular is for the simple fact that when you open an upright freezer you immediately start losing cold air towards the top. With a chest freezer, because heat rises and freezer is so low, the cold air sort of “sits” down there and you hardly lose any. The freezer doesn’t have to work as hard to keep your food cold and this also keeps your cost of running it lower. Another thing to consider, and I don’t know the answer to this, are upright freezers able to be manually defrosted? This would bring us back to the above conversation you can refer to about manual vs. auto defrosting in freezers.

      • Laura

Upright freezers manually defrost also. I figure unless you’re very organized or storing all the same item, the amount of time you’ll end up digging around for an item in a chest freezer would offset the form efficiency defect. Most upright freezers are significantly larger than these chest freezers-15 cubic feet plus.So it depends on what you’re looking for. The more efficient one is the one you have full!

  14. rensee

is this loud like buzzing sound i have a one bedroom thinking of keeping in my room only space we have- someone please weigh in about the noise if any
    TIA 🙂

  15. Breich

Love this freezer. I bought it from Home Depot last Thanksgiving and it has worked really well so far. It holds a lot. It is wider than the standard cube longways, but skinnier front to back. It is very quiet.

  16. Cathy

Don’t forget to use military discount if you qualify. I went to local Home Depot and used military discount to get extra 10% off ($17.80).

  17. LinG

Thanks for posting this, Collin! It came at the perfect time just when we were on the lookout for one.

We just ordered ours today and the $10 coupon code ate up most of the tax so I ended up just paying $179.34. Now, with the 6% cash back from Shopathome, it gave me exactly what I need to reach the $20 so I’d get my first check from them.

Now to get more ice cream… 😉
