Calling all teachers! If you have yet to join the Staples Teacher Rewards program, you are missing out on some great opportunities to stock up on supplies for your classroom for FREE!

Last year, Staples allowed teachers enrolled in the Teachers Rewards Program to snag extended limits on Extreme Deals. This year, teachers are not eligible for extended limits; however, teachers can now get 100% back in Staples Rewards on the purchase of up to 25 items instead.

Through July and August 2012, teachers enrolled in the Staples Teachers Rewards Program will get 100% back in Staples Rewards on up to 25 items when they buy any Extreme Deals in-store only (note that the maximum quantity eligible for Rewards is 25 including items purchased as part of the Extreme Deal). You can find the Extreme Deals each week listed on the front page of the weekly ad. For this week’s Staples deals, click here.

Fine Print: Items purchased over Extreme Deal limit will be charged at regular retail price. Price eligible for Rewards is the amount paid at checkout after application of all promotions, coupons, instant savings, and Rewards redemptions. Limit one Staples Rewards account per person or at any mailing address. Staples Rewards are issued online monthly when the value of the Reward is at least $10. For questions about Staples Rewards, you can call 1-800-793-3320.

I was just getting ready to write to you about Staples’ binder trade-in…do you know anything about it!? I saw it in the store yesterday, but didn’t have time to research it thoroughly. I searched the website and didn’t see anything about it.

    • Pam

I did the binder trade-in last week–I thought it was awesome! For each binder you trade in, you will get $2 off a new binder. Last week I bought 2 of the Staples heavy-duty binders that were on sale 2/$12 (the lowest price of the season, according to them.) I traded in 2 binders, essentially bringing the price down to 2/$8.
You can buy any brand of binder with the trade-in. They don’t care about the condition of the binder you are trading in, as it gets recycled. The cashier told me a lot of their equipment, such as staplers, etc, that they use in the store is made from recycled binders–she showed me one, and I could see where it looked like a the side of a binder.

Do you know if homeschooling moms qualify as teachers in this program?

    • Melony

Elizabeth, I am also a homeschooling mom and I signed up for the Staples Teachers Rewards Program.

I had to show a paystub as proof that I was a teacher but who knows maybe they will change it because there are a lot of very upset teachers with Staples right now. Most of us spend hundreds to thousands of dollars out of pocket on our class and depended on the getting 1 penny portfolios, crayons, etc since we are never reimbursed. Now Staples took that from us and waiting for their rewards (all items over limit bought at FULL price!) to come months later when their items cost triple of other stores just isn’t worth it in my opinion. Better deals to be found at other stores if you need more than their 1-2 qty limit. Collin always posts really good deals at other stores!

I love buying school supplies. I don’t expect to get reimbursed. Why can’t you just use your own money. I gladly use my own money for my students! I love doing it! I just save it from my salary all year round and save it for the summer!!! I am happy that Staples gives us the penny deals even if they are only 2 per person! At least we get something!!! 🙂

      • Jenny

You are very blessed to be able to spend money for your classroom without needing to be reimbursed. Our family lives on a teacher’s salary. While I don’t feel entitled to any special deals or savings, being reimbursed is very helpful for us.

        • April

I have to agree! Any little bit helps!

      • Makayla

I understand both arguments. Whether spending or not their has to be a lot of love for the teaching profession. I personally do not teach anymore. However, I do understand Staples and their new policy. They are trying to teach loyalty. Most people go in, get the deals and do not return to staples the rest of the year which is the purpose of their sales. Too many teachers took advantage of this in the past and hence new policy in effect.

      • CW

Yeah, I cant afford to fund 20 kids supplies fully on my own. I teach in a TItle I school where the kids have nothing/bring nothing. Our supply money is non-existent and our teachers really depended on that 25 limit at a penny each to get supplies for the students. This year its going to be pretty much too bad, so sad, find the money to send your child with what they need. I cannot even afford to have my own child! Last year I spent $1,893 on my classroom and that was with penny sales. The federal govt even took away our little crummy $250 deduction this past tax season. The reason we all use Collin’s site is for the deals/coupons so we can afford things. Unfortunately as Jenny mentioned, I’m no longer at the point I can just spend for others. 🙁 I dont think Staples understands how much teachers really depended on their deals.

I am a homeschool mom and price match the extreme deals at Walmart. No problems there!

    • A

I appreciate all that teachers do for our children and am quick to make donations to the classroom when needed and as surprises for the teacher. I however, don’t think that teachers should “be upset with Staples” based on their change. Obviously it wasn’t good for their business and they had to make a change. And they prob considered that some just would no longer do business with them. Be thankful for the benefits you did receive, for as long as you did. And like you said, I am sure there will be other stores that can help fill the void.

    • coffeeclatch

I don’t understand why it’s “not worth it” to you. You DO still get reimbursed for your purchases…you just have to wait until the following month after the month you purchase your items to get it. In the end Staples is still giving you the great deal…and in qty of 25. Also, I have never had to wait “months” to get my reimbursement. It comes the next month after the month you purchase.
I am grateful to staples for their teacher program and I try to support them throughout the year to show them my gratitude.

      • Erica

You get “reimbursed” but not really. When you get your rewards in the mail, it is not a check that you can deposit like their “Easy Rebates” program (which is great). The Rewards are a voucher to use at Staples. However, you cannot use this voucher on “promotional items” which means you cannot use it on anything on sale!!!!!!! I was very very disappointed when I tried to use $29 of rewards on about a $35 purchase and the ONLY thing that came off was my full-priced bottle of water. Since everything else was on sale, they qualified as a promotional items. I don’t know about you but I never buy things at Staples full price as the prices they charge are sky high. I still shop at Staples but I never participate in the Rewards anymore.

Here is the fine print from the Staples website: “Rewards and Recycling Rewards are redeemable for most merchandise in Staples stores, online at staples.com® or by phone at 1-800-333-3330 but cannot be redeemed for or applied against taxes, cash, credit remittance, delivery charges, custom printing orders placed online, promotional products, Staples gift cards, third party gift cards, prepaid phone cards, postage stamps, prior purchases, Staples Industrialsm purchases or any purchases made on other provider Web sites. “

I use my rewards to purchase all my ink. I often get for free or significantly reduced price, so I totally think it’s worth it. I guess it’s all in how you choose to look at it. I understand that you don’t get it back in cash and there are limitations, but we are a large family and we print a lot, so we go through a lot of ink. Using Staples rewards that I earn on extreme deals etc.pays for my ink so I have the money I would have spent on that for other things…

  5. Linda

Thanks, Pan! can you bring in any kind of binder, or does it have to be a certain brand and/or material?

  6. sheri

Homeschoolers can participate. They will give you a teacher rewards card.

  7. Ms. Secret

They charge you FULL price not the extreme price for the teacher deal—so its a LOT out of pocket—that is why teachers are pissed.

    • CW

Yes exactly my point. And when you get that money back in rewards one or two months later, crayons will be $2 when you could have got them at another retailer for $1, etc. Cases of paper there are $46, where its half the price elsewhere.

      • glo

Hi! CW, I totally agree with you. I went to Staples last week with my Teacher Reward Card in hand, and was so disappointed to hear about the new policy. I feel Staples will lose a lot of teachers going in for the penny deals. I will try Office Max, Target, & Walmart for deals. I did go to Toys R Us for 24 pk of crayons for .25 cents and from Collin’s video, Walmart has Elmer’s glue stick for a dime.
Staples was an awesome place to go to to shop for all my students. 3 years ago they didn’t even have a $5 spending limit for their penny deals.
The policy wouldn’t be so bad if they would send the staples rewards within a wk to roll it onto other deals.

  8. Kara

I am a teacher and I have a major problem with this change in policy. I supply almost everything for my students since I teach at a Title 1 school and I am not planning on stopping. I feel that the money I save couponing can help pay for my students folders, journals, snacks, notebooks, papers, and pencils. It is the little bit that I can do for my families so they do not have to decide if they should purchase school supplies or food. I do not have a problem paying full price for items because I do it for them all the time but I do have a problem with getting the cost back in rewards. Since it is given back as a reward I can not turn it over in August to purchase other extreme deals and still receive those rewards. However, I just worked around the new policy and spoke to the manager and explained the situation. He allowed me to do 5 transactions last week and I just split up all the rebate offers to make sure I met the $5 limit. I am also lucky to have friends that are not teachers who are willing to make multiple transactions and willing to do the rebate offers so I can get as many of the penny deals as possible. I just wish that society as a whole would understand that most teachers spend at least 1-2 whole paychecks every year supplying things for our classrooms.

    • glo

Kara you are a very selfless person. You must be an amazing teacher. I’m sure your students love you, I too loved getting all my students’ folders and notebooks from Staples because I didn’t want and of my students to feel embarrassed of their school supplies or lack of. I would buy all my students the same type of folder, notebooks, glues, pencils…etc. Everyone one had the same supplies and that was one area where students didn’t compare or compete. That felt good that I was able to do that for them w Staple’s penny deals. It’s a bummer their new policy has changed.

  9. Barbara Scholl

I went to Staples last week(I am a teacher) and asked why you could no longer get more than 4. He said it was because people who were not teachers were signing up for the rewards and taking advantage of the system; thus the new policy is in effect.

    • Rose

I needed to show a copy of my teaching license to get my rewards card. I thought you had to show something (a paystub, school id) in order to receive your rewards card?

    • Kristy

Not true. We always had to show a teacher ID. They could just ask for a paystub.

      • Kristy

I’m saying what he told you was not true 😉

  10. Kristy

Office Max will let teachers have a limit of 20 on their deals! Thanks Office Max!

  11. Terry Dwyer

Please understand these Rewards are store credit, not checks. Staples, typically, hasn’t made that clear.

  12. AJ

I was actually told by a manager that teachers purchased items at multiple stores then took them to their school stores for resale. That’s why they changed their policy. It sounds like a case of a few ruined it for many. As for the person who loves to spend money on her class–I’m guessing you are a young teacher with no children of your own. I too enjoy sharing with my class but after 20 years of teaching, it adds up to many thousands of dollars. When you have your own family you realize how significant that amount of money is. Try to think of other jobs where you make the salary you make and have to buy your own office supplies . . . hmmm. Keep loving the job and your students; teaching is a great profession. I’m happy to work with kids every day. I’m not blaming Staples. They are a for profit company. But I will go wherever I can get the best deals. That usually isn’t Staples anymore.
