We got one of these for our summer road trip and my 3 year old loved it. Even my older 2 (5 and 7) had some turns with it. You can upload personal photos and the kids can decorate them with glasses, mustaches, etc. My kids thought it was hilarious.

I have yet to try this thing out, but I bought the blue one last time it was offered for $30. It’s being saved as a Christmas gift. I was excited to see the games for these clearenced at the Target toy sale this year so I grabbed some not as expensive additional games to go with it too.

I grabbed my system clearanced at Target for $15 … a case for $5 and two games for $5 and $6. 🙂 I was very happy!

I found 2 of these for my Boys in the Target toy clearance for $24 each two weeks ago. Keep you eyes open when you are shopping at target, as I still see some of the iXL games for $5.98 ( usually $19.99)! I compared the iXLs I got for cheap with the ones full price at toys r us, and the expensive ones showed that it included “15 mini apps”. I was a little bummed, but since I got a good deal I kept them. To my excitement, when I set it up on the computer, it got updated and mine ended up getting the mini apps too! Yay 🙂

What age range do you think would be most happy with this? I have a 2.5 year old and a 5.5 year old – I would think it would be more appropriate for the younger one…

    • Danielle

Yes, I am sure the 2.5 year old would be the most happy with it as the games are more geared toward the preschool crowd.

    • Amber

Kristin I have a 2.5 year old daughter and a just turned 5 year old son. My son got this when he turned 3 and has been loving it and using it ever since. I love that it grows with the child as there are more difficult levels and things to do on each of the games. I just got a mobigo on clearance as my two were arguing in the car over the ixl and my son loves that it has a keyboard that slides out and the games are definitely a little more difficult on the mobigo for my 2.5 year old. I do recommend the ixl if you are looking at just getting one handheld as the 2.5 would be able to do it and it would still be fun for your older one. My kids love the toy story game!

My daughter got one of these 2 years ago and she still plays with. She’ll be 5 right after Christmas. The thing has been dropped, scratched, and everything but still works great. She LOVES it. My son and daughter are both getting DS’s for Christmas so we’re moving on to bigger video games, but this system has definitely been great.

  6. Your Shopping Bug

My son has had one since he was about 2, but didn’t really get into it until 3, he is now almost 5 and loves it. My daughter is 2 1/2 and she likes it, but not as much as my son.

  7. Jen

the pink one is also $30!

  8. sal

can we upload rhymes n songs

  9. Nicole

We just bought this for my son who is 3 years old and very smart. He loves it! So even if your child is older, they will most likely love it. My one year old takes it from him as well.

  10. Lynn

Thanks! I just got one of these for my 4YO boy for Christmas.

  11. Kara

I’m glad for the good feedback! I got one for my niece (who will be getting it for her 4th birthday) for $14 at the Target toy clearance and we snagged about 5 games too, I’m glad it seems worth it!

  12. Melissa

    YAY THANK YOU!!

  13. Tara

Thanks! I ordered 2 for our upcoming move! Hopefully it will keep my kids busy!

  14. Kristinkay

I ordered two pink ones! Hopefully target still has some games…though I doubt it 🙂

  15. Jamie

Decisions… This or the mobigo for 3.5 year old???

    • Barbara

Get this better than the mobi go. We have both. Hate the mobi go because it uses cartridges that Get lost and the mobi go does not have an automatic shut off. Just keeps playing and playing until the batteries run out or you turn it off. The fisher price xl does so much more. My daughter loves it. Hope this helps

      • Jayna

My son has a Mobigo it was the first gaming system he got and he loved it he got it when he was two and he is now 5 and stills plays with it and he has a 3Ds and a Innotab. I highly recommend a Mobigo it helps with math letters and so much more.

got a question would this be good for a 10 year old autistic child he likes music although he doesnt know how to write he is starting with the alphabet 😀

  17. Destinee

Target still has the Green Lantern game online for $6.94…just recently, I saw they still had the Spongebob game in the store for $5.97. Also looks like Amazon has some games on the cheaper side. Batman $7.99 and Kung Fu Panda $6.99! I wonder how cheap these will be on Black Friday?

  18. Emilytwinmom

I poked around and found these on a number of websites on clearance for $30… does this mean it’s going to be replaced with a newer system and become outdated? I can’t keep up with all these toys for kids… every time my kids find one they love it goes out of production and I end up scouring used shops to find games and such for it!!

  19. matilda

I read on a website that they are being discontinued but I bought one from target toy clearance anyway. It looks like a nice gift!

  20. Destiny

These have already went up to over $45. I missed the deal. 🙁

    • Emilytwinmom

Check amazon – they have it for a cheap price at yoyo.com through amazon, the pink one is $30 right now, and the blue one is $34. Just search for it and the yoyo.com ones will come up! Hope that helps!

Fisher price has indicated that these are going to be replaced by a more tablet-like gadget so grab the games while you can. They are super durable. My son breaks everything and this has survived many drops, spills, etc. He loves putting his own music on it and drawing on photos. Do get a nice sd card too and you can fit all the games on and lots of music. It is also nice that you can put headphones in it for traveling and it fits in a purse easily. The games are very simple. If you have a big gamer, they will be bored with these compared to apps and such but they are age appropriate and easy for the youngsters who want to play games but always “die” or lose.

  22. Jen

    the price has gone up

  23. Tabatha

Just wondering if I should go with this or wait for the kids leapster ipad thing to go on sale..Or since they do different stuff it looks like,,,Should I go ahead and get this and get the other when it starts going on sale?? Decisions decisions!!

    • Tabatha

My little one is 4 will be 5 in a few months so just wondering if this would be a waste of money or not

  24. marie m

I just bought this for my 6 yr old, is she too old to enjoy this? She asks for an IPod!!
