I had a problem with some of my coupons and they refused to take them. I asked them to take the items off my total and they refused. Stating that once they start entering coupons that they can’t go back and take anything off. I only got a few things and I don’t feel it’s worth it. Most of the items can be purchased at other stores for the same deal or only a few cents more. Not worth the hassle!!!!

    • Sophia

I had similar problems. The cashier could not enter in the coupons and had to get the manager. Then manager(s) then moved me to a different register to check out and proceeded to tell me I could not use $1 off coupons as that would make the item essentially “free” and also that I could only use 2 coupons in one shopping trip! She then proceeded (after quite a bit of trouble trying to figure out how to run the coupons) to say I really should have read that paper before I signed it! (In regards to the new coupon policy the Dollar Tree had all employees sign as understanding.) APPARENTLY no one at that store understands their own Coupon Policy as she was incorrect on all accounts! Hopefully this will get better as employees become more familiar with coupons.

      • Sara

I am a manager at a dollar tree in tulsa, and it is my understanding that we can take coupons, and there is no limit to the amount exept on internet coupons. the limits on those are 2 per transaction. I clipped 3 myself and used them. i did have problems finding the right sizes but i saved three dollars. the max savings dollar tree can give you is 1.00 off an item. and if it makes it free, then good for you. but most coupons are buy 3 and get 1.00 off, or similar deals. i havent had any problems at my store with coupons. it is true that they cant take items off after putting the coupons in, its similar to a food stamp transaction. you cant void it. sucky but they were telling the truth.

        • Jodie

By the way with food stamps you can put the money back on the card, I just had this experience at my Winco when I had paid for my food and also had some medicine and found out the medicine was to much but in order to void the medicine she had to put the money back on the food card and then take off the medicine and then have me pay for the food.

        • Carla Pennington

Boy you need to coupon shop more to get a better understanding of the savings. You said “Most” coupon are buy 3, get $1 off. Very rare actually. I bought over $120 at my Dollar Tree in Southern CA and walked out with $108 in my pocket and not a bunch of crap I won’t use. The only issue is that the workers are so uneducated about the policy… and they admit it, they don’t understand “Freebie” coupons are FAR different than buying an item for a dollar and giving a dollar coupon to make the item free.

      • kadfamily

Mine wouldn’t let me get free items either. Frustrating!

        • Simone

No problems, just get the Dollar Tree ad and price match everything at Walmart and use your qpns. there.

    • stacy

hey there, so i work at a dollar tree and i want you to know that what they did was incredibly against policy and the law. If you tell them you do not want something they MUST take it off. I recommend going to the district manager about your story. and another thing, it is super easy for someone ringing you up to get back to the page of putting more items on to your total, that same page takes them off. It gives them a small notice if they take something off but there is no way that they can get fired or in trouble for taking an item off. the only defence i have for the dollar tree you went to is your cupon may have been expired or not 100% to the item you are getting. If you are ever in the granite bay area, the dollar tree out there on auburn folsom and douglas is the nicest cleanest happiest one i have ever been in, wich is why i even applied there. They will take great care of you there. They great you with a warm welcome every time anyone walks in. So please dont let most dollar trees ruin it, becuase we are a good one!

I just got home from my 1st coupon trip to the Dollar Tree and I was dissapointed I noticed that with these sizes that they have I can just as easily and have in the past gotten a better deal on a full size item at Target. Like the soft soap bodywash for example. I paid .50 when the full size somewhere else could be the same price or FREE. The cashier was rude and needed to get a manager to help her and I am not fluent in spanish but I can understand enough common terms and the things they were saying about me were not cool. All because I was trying to use coupons.

Ugh!!! Not worth the hassle!! I agree Heidi!

    • deborah

the same happen to me except,
after all that the power went out and all was left to do is give me my change

  3. bhw

I left a message on the Dollar Tree website. I sent a link to Hip2Save so they could see all the comments listed above. I am hoping someone at Dollar Tree is listening and will act upon this. Your comments are very important.

I would strongly recommend that you email Dollar Tree corporate and let them know what you have experienced. Collectively we can change these negative experiences into positive ones if we work together.

Hip2Save has a very strong following and a large collective voice. Let’s be heard!!!

    • Carla Pennington

Believe me, corporate will know soon enough :o) Heard of mystery shoppers??? Well let’s just say they have a very detailed list of what their expectations are and I have had one in 13 stores get over 40%. They got a 95%, so they are out there if they want to learn and have a great manager. This garabage about not taking it off is crap. I will let the people who may be know and point them to this blog. You may see changes very, very rapidly. Reports have not been good and managers are especially rude. Talk of letting some go and relocating many others.

  4. madason

i’m going to dallor tree for my first hall later today

    • loralee

I went today and found the refill soft soap 11 oz. for 1.00 minus the 35 cent coupon is a great deal.We also had the post cereal. It was hard to match up coupons because of the size of items. Some things were not worth the price after the coupon is applied. If I find any thing free or close to it I got it.

  5. melanie

I had no problem with the olay bar soap coupons and the speed stick coupon. I found speed stick in a sz 1.8oz and it wasnt restricted for that size on my coupon. Thanks for these awesome matchups!

  6. SteelersChick

Cashier knew nothing about accepting coupons, manager was insulting, and I promptly emailed Dollar Tree!

  7. Dawn

Most of the products I found at my Dollar Tree that I could match up were not compatible sizes for the coupons I had. I did get a box of Shredded Wheat and two Sunny Ds. 🙂

  8. Winnie

I found that the Luigis and Minute Maid frozen treat coupons were worth it. Luigis coupon is 75/2 not one as prev mentioned.

  9. Graham Cracker

I think the motive for bringing the ‘couponers’ into DT was the enticement of buying other goods. Most couponers are very frugal and most people who are not couponer believe Dollar Tree is a great place to be frugal and save money. I mean look at who’s been holding the greatest share of the retail profits for the past two years?? Dollar Tree. Go figure right. Only seems logical to me. *jmo*

  10. Michelle

Hopefully they will read. Everyone who was working both days I was in were very polite. However I went in and bought the deodarnt yesturday NOT KNOWING about the size(I do feel it was my responsability to look and didnt). Today I went in to get the books and found out the cashier got wrote up. I asked if I returned all of them and let them keep the coupons if they could undo the write up and was told no. I feel soooo bad. As far as everyone working I had no problems…but to know I am responsible for misusing a coupon and getting someone wrote up is not good.

  11. Connie

I am very disappointed in my trip. First the majority of the products fell into the smaller sizes that were not applicable to my coupons, But my biggest issue was the fact the cashier had to manually enter each and everyone of my coupons. They were not able to scan them, thus she stopped and had to read each and every coupon. I do not think I will be couponing there any time in the future

It’s ridiculous! I went there today. I tried to buy 2 boxes of Gallon Sized Hefty Zipper Bags, 2 BIC whiteouts, and 2 softsoap bodywashes. I had a 1.00 off 2 coupon for each of those sets of items and the coupons all had no size restrictions. It was 1.00 off any 2 Hefty Zipper bags, 1.00 off any 2 BIC stationary products, and 1.00 off any 2 softsoap bodywashes/bars (2pk or larger). When I got to the register, the cashier called her manager to come over. Both her and her manager told me that I could not use my coupons on those items because they were not the exact same ones in the pictures used on the coupons. How ridiculous is that? She kept telling me that the Hefty Zipper bags that I got were not the right count size and not the size at all for that matter. At this point, I kindly pointed out that it says “any” and that there were no size restrictions. Still, the manager said that she couldn’t take them because if something goes wrong, “then the cashier would be short” and she “didn’t want that to happen” so it had to be the “same exact item on the picture they used on the coupon.” I have never had a problem with my coupons. This is the most ridiculous thing that I have come upon. So instead of getting the items, I told her to just take them off and went my way. It was not only a waste of my time, but I feel as though Dollar Tree should clearly state in their coupon policy the exact details and terms of what they would and would not take. Managers should not be allowed to decide what the manufacturers’ coupons will or will not take. I’ve always loved Dollar Tree, but after this experience, I just feel like they mind as well not bother to accept coupons at all. To top it all off, the cashier told me that I could only “use one coupon on ONE item” as in I could not use a coupon that said 1.00 off 2. How bogus is that? I rather keep my couponing trips at CVS. Thank you very much!

    • Rose

The exact same thing happened to me! I tried to point out the word “any” but the cashier stood her ground and said it had to be for the item pictured on the coupon. I spent almost 30 minutes browsing aisles and matching my coupons and hit a dead end at the register. I wasn’t able to purchase anything I had selected and the cashier wouldn’t hear me out. She said that they are a dollar store and things are done differently there with coupons. I felt humilated in front of the other customers and I’ve decided that was my last trip couponing there!

      • Christina K.

I’m sorry you had to share the same experience. My boyfriend and I both agreed that it was the most absurd thing ever. We were there for nearly the same amount of time as you. Maybe a bit more even! The dollar tree that I went to is pretty big so I was browsing and scouting the aisles for what I could use my coupons on. My boyfriend usually goes with me on my coupon trips, so I like to explain the coupon verbiage to him. I tried to explain to the Dollar Tree manager and cashier as well, they just wouldn’t hear it! Honestly, if they only want us to get the EXACT item on the picture of the coupon, they should place that into their policies. I mean do they really expect all the manufacturers to put on every single coupon the EXACT items for “ANY,” they must be out of their minds. That wastes more time and more money. I won’t be back there for couponing either. I now feel like that was just a ruse to get us to go there and waste our time there buying things we would not be able to use coupons on, especially if we feel pressured by the people waiting in line behind us and embarassed because they have already entered a coupon into the system and could not go back to void the items off.

    • Morgan Jones

I experienced the same rudeness last night at my local store in Williamsport, PA. I went after work to get the free Disney sandwich bags & Efferdent cleanser. I got to the counter and the cashier did not even TRY to scan the coupons. He looked at the “$1.00 off ANY Disney or Marvel item” and said he could not accept it. I nicely tried to explain to him it says Disney on the sandwich bag container and that the coupon says ANY Disney item. He pulled the sandwich bag container away from me when I tried to point it out and kept interrupting me everytime I tried to explain. I think he thought it had to be exactly what was pictured as you guys explained as well. After trying several times nicely to explain it to him and being interrupted by him he slammed the coupon down on the counter and said, “I’M NOT TAKING IT!” There were 2 people behind me and it was EXTREMELY embarrassing. I then told him I didn’t want any of the items and that I would like my coupons back. I’m 25 and consider myself a frugal woman. I can certainly afford those 2 items but getting them free is even better. I don’t think I’ll be returning to the Dollar Tree to buy ANYTHING. Family Dollar & Dollar General have never given me a problem!

      • Christina K.

I feel your pain! It was not necessary for him to be that rude to you. I was like you, I tried to explain to the manager and the cashier, but both would not hear it. In fact there’s a term that I use to describe people when they are irritated but don’t want to yell at you because it’s inappropriate. I call it being “politely rude.” And that is exactly what I got from them. I live in Philadelphia, PA so we live in the same state. I think it might be a rule that’s been established in this state or something. Either that, or all the Dollar Tree’s have misinterpreted what the coupon policy is, because I decided to give them another chance and went today to a different Dollar Tree today; however, before I began to pick things out to use my coupons on, I asked if the items needed to be what was exactly pictured on the coupon. Immediately, the response was “yes, this is what we were told to do, we cannot accept anything other than what is pictured on the coupon.” I have decided that couponing at Dollar Tree is a no-go for me, unless they change their policies, inform the stores and train the managers and cashiers better, as well as clear up any discrepancies inside the policy. I wish it were more specific. If that IS true what the cashier told me, Dollar Tree should place that in their policy, because it wastes people’s times and it actually takes away some of their business. To me, it seems like a ruse, advertising to take coupons yet having these guidelines to go by even though the manufacturers’ coupons state otherwise. I always thought the conditions on the manufacturers’ coupons usually overpowered the store’s policy at most stores (i.e.: Target, CVS, etc). I’m 22, unemployed, and a college student. I coupon to help my boyfriend and I have money to pay for other things that we need to pay for (ie: school/transportation/books), as well as give us some breaks on things that we need to buy (shampoo, deodorants, school supplies, etc.)

  14. Ruth

My first trip was disappointing as the cashier tried to scan the coupons and the register keep saying the item was not available. After trying all my coupons, she said none of my coupons were good coupons. I told her thank you and left everything including my non-coupon items. The next day I happened to be in another town and tried again. NO PROBLEM. I got the deodorant, several boxes of shreddred wheat, efferdent (works great in the toilet) and gum flossers. Saved 10.75 at a dollar tree-I was thrilled.

    • Sharon

It sounds like the first store you went to the employee was totally uninformed or purposely did the wrong thing so she didn’t have to take your coupons. They have to manually type in the amounts for the coupons to be accepted. At least that was my experience. Was that what they did at the second store you went to?

    • Amanda

The manager at our Dollar Tree said the coupons don’t scan and they are suppost to put them in manually. I had a very good experience at mine they were very helpfull So you had a bad experience.

  15. Sharon

Actually, the speed stick coupon excludes 2.0, 1.4 and 1.6 (I think those were the numbers) BUT dollar tree carries the men’s speedstick in a 1.8 and so technically because it’s not listed it’s not excluded. I was able to use my coupons on those.

  16. bhw

I just got off the phone with one of the Dollar Tree operators named Bernice. She said that the Dollar Tree does in fact take $1 coupons but the instructions written on the website are confusing. She said it was going to take some time to iron these issues out.

I told her I have not gone to the Dollar Tree with my coupons based on all the negative comments I have seen so far. I asked her what I should do if my coupons are not accepted. She said to call back and report the name of the store, the manager and cashier you dealt with and that corporate would follow up.

I told her that if they simply changed their written policy to state that they took the $1 coupons, that they could avoid all these calls and negative uproar. She agreed but I guess she’s only the messenger 🙂

I would strongly recommend that if you have had a negative experience with Dollar Tree to immediately call them at 1-877-530-TREE and report the problem.

In fact, call while you are standing in the store and see what kind of results you get!

    • the beth

Ha, call while you are in the store – love it! That could be pretty funny. Hand the phone to the manager and let the CSR tell the store employees what their own coupon policy is, hehehe. 😉

  17. melissa

The coupon for speed stick excluded did not exclude 1.8 oz sizes, which I have seen several varieties of at the dollar tree. They took mine no problem, because it was not excluded on the coupon.

  18. peg

Wow, I was psyched to coupon @Dollar Tree, now I’m thinking twice after reading all these comments! Don’t think I will bother. I hate being embarrassed in line when a cashier yells at you about coupons. At my local grocery store, target & cvs I always go to the same cashier who knows me & my coupons and never give me a hard time.

  19. the beth

I shopped DT last Sunday, the day they began taking coupons. I hadn’t had time to post my experience since, but I went back today, and it was very different. Let me explain:

Last Sunday 8/26. I went in to buy some of the Speed Stick, Softsoap body wash, and Shredded Wheat. I had coupons for 3 of each for this trip. Went to check out and then began to hand her my coupons (I am on friendly terms with this cashier as we’re becoming more familiar with each other since I buy my newspapers there every Sunday for the past 6 weeks now, and she is a couponer as well). She proceeds to tell me that the policy is only ‘one coupon per item per transaction.’ I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I asked her to verify this because that is not what was posted here on H2S. Her manager supposedly read from the printout exactly what the cashier had told me. Thus, I had to go back through the line 2 more times with just 3 items in each transaction. Talk about ridiculous. The cashier also agreed that it makes more sense to not limit it to one per transaction, because it is going to slow things down (and they are already very busy almost every time I go there with line(s) backing up.) After I got home, a day or so later, I did find it on dollartree.com the coupon policy does not state ‘one per item per transaction’ as they were leading customers to believe, and if they were somehow led to believe by a false or misprinted printout.

Today 9/1. I had more coupons for the same items, plus the Olay beauty bar (did not find), and the body wash was out, so I just got 3 each of the deodorant and cereal. I did not separate my items as I went through the line. If there was an issue with ‘one coupon per item per transaction’ I was prepared to tell them that is not what dollartree.com states. I handed the cashier (not one I am familiar with) my coupons, and she had to flag down the same manager I encountered on Sunday to help her enter the coupons. She showed the manager the items I had (so the manager can verify the items & sizes to the coupon), manager was satisfied and proceeded to enter the coupons. The cashier then asked the manager ‘they can take all those coupons for the items?’ and the manager said yes. So it seems to me that within the past week they have been corrected on the coupon policy of not taking just one coupon per item per transaction. I saved a bunch more time than on Sunday, and I was in the line, checked out, and out of there in less than 5 minutes this time.

Last week, it was very frustrating to need to go through the line multiple times just to buy more than one of the same item, but I will now be looking more forward to coupon shopping there after today’s experience. If your store is still saying ‘one coupon per item per transaction’ I encourage you to contact corporate and let them know that store # so & so is not working the coupon policy properly as per dollartree.com (towards bottom of page: http://www.dollartree.com/custserv/custserv.jsp?pageName=TermsConditions)

  20. JohnandLamora

At my Dollar tree here in Indiana they had some of the Speed stick deodorant that were 1.8 oz (the green “avalanche” scent) which the coupon does not exclude, so I was able to get them for free.

  21. JR

I work at DT as cashier, tell corporate to update equipment so coupons can be scanned!

  22. kathleen

I work at Dollar Tree, I haven’t had any trouble with the coupons. I haven’t had many. The only thing i really have to watch is the date, size, and amount. And we are only to use 2 “printable” coupons per order. Other than that no problems at all 🙂 I use them all the time.

  23. Katie

I have been a cashier for the Dollar Tree in Coon Rapids for nearly 4 years now. Here’s what I can tell you guys. Sorry for writing a novel, but hopefully it helps.

    1. We were told BY CORPORATE in our coupon policy that the exact size must be on the coupon. The managers do not decide which coupons are good are bad, corporate DT are the ones making the decisions. If you have a problem with that specific part of the policy, complain to them, not the managers. They are just doing what they are told.

    2. The coupon process can be very confusing because of the way our computer systems are set up. There are 3 different menus operated by the same keys, and therefore, is a slow process. This explains why managers have been called up about questions regarding processing coupons. In addition, the way we were informed of this new coupon policy is a handout that we read over, and sign. We don’t get any training other than a vague “how-to” sheet on the side of the register. Yes, we have to manually enter each individual amount, I agree, it is slow and extremely inconvenient. But again, the coupon process is new for this company, and bugs are to be expected. Just know that the workers are just as dumbstruck as you may be.

    3. Honestly, it’s a dollar store… can you expect such a cheap, low-price company to be so open with what coupons they can take? Yes, DT has a very good reputation as being convenient and low-price, but if their income is only $1 per item, how can you expect them to be so quick to give up .50 or .75 of (potentially) every product?

    4. If cashiers are being picky about coupons, it’s because if it’s the wrong coupon, it’s their fault for not checking it well enough. The policy is very strict and claims that each coupon is worth a specific dollar amount, and when a coupon isn’t applicable but the cashier takes it anyway, it’s on their record, and it shows that they are missing company money from their drawer. The blame is put on the cashier, and DT is strict about company money loss. Yes, the product has to be exactly like the display picture on the coupon, because if it isn’t, it’s our behinds that get kicked. Again, we had no training for this new change, so we can’t be sure of how the company specifically wants this new thing to go, unless they come and explain it directly to every DT worker.

    5. Believe me, after working at DT for some time, I have seen some pretty crappy workers. Some people are being extremely lazy and will find any reason not to take coupons. IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT WHETHER YOUR COUPON IS VALID, or if you believe it is an acceptable coupon that was not accepted, please call 1-877-530-TREE. They need your feedback so they can improve their system! They won’t know unless you speak up!

    • maflies1

Katie, thank you so much for your very thorough explanation of why things are as they are for DT, and how the process works. I, for one, appreciate DT taking coupons very much, and I’m sure the wrinkles will be worked out. Love DT!

  24. kinga.

I’ve had numerous experiences now at Dollar Tree where the employees completely do not understand the policy & basically make up their own rules based on their own understanding.. regardless of how you try to explain to them what the policy actually means. In these situations, even having a copy of the actual coupon policy didn’t help because they still had their ‘own meaning’ and/or understanding.. that was false.. and argue that false understanding to the death. Ugh.
For example: “Only one (1) manufacturer’s coupon will be accepted per item.” to one cashier/manager meant I couldn’t use 2 separate manufacturer coupons for the same 2 items.
And another ‘manager’ in a separate Dollar Tree location told me that coupons over a $1.00 cannot be accepted. I find that to be false.. particularly in a situation where the coupon is $1.50 off of 2.
I’m not going to lie, these various experiences have been discouraging and leave me not wanting to stand there & argue w/ the manager (who is the highest ranking person there, but still unfortunately doesn’t understand the policy adequately)..

And calling the 1-877-530-TREE phone number has been absolutely no help because there is never a live person at the other end & leaving voicemails asking for a phone call back leads no where because they have yet to call me back, after calling & leaving voicemails 2-3 times. I’ve had the same experience with the ‘contact us’ email form that they have on the http://www.dollartree.com website.. no response back.

This leaves me not wanting to shop at Dollar Tree at all, and/or definitely not want to even use coupons there sometimes because the employees have been so uneducated in the coupon policy. Hopefully this will change over time & these things will be resolved.
