For all of you Commissary shoppers, I’m excited to finally share some new deals with all of you (with thanks to My Military Savings since I am no longer a Commissary shopper 🙁 ).

Remember, you can score better than FREE items at the Commissary and apply any overage towards other products in your transaction (veggies, meat and any other items you may not have coupons for)! The Commissary actually allows this. In their coupon policy it states, “Valid coupons will be entered at the value stated on the coupon. If the value of the coupon exceeds the cost of the product, the customer will be given the full value of the coupon.” Pretty Cool, huh?!

Also, make sure to be on the lookout for lots of great tear pad coupons! The Commissary always seems to have a plethora of these. Usually you’ll find various tear pad coupons and realize the item featured on the coupon is not currently on sale. However, that does not mean you shouldn’t take the coupon. Most of the time these coupons have month long expiration dates, so take one or two coupons and save them for a possible sale.

Thanks! My Commissary also had 55c off 1 Red Baron pizza coupons and the pizzas were on sale for $2.50 so they were $1.95 each. There were also lots of little recipe books around that had one or more coupons in them. Our Comm manager told me she has the Thanksgiving coupon books but won’t put them out until next week. Don’t know why.

always wondered about the baggers, they work off of Tips only right? so you have to tip them for bagging your groceries or you’re a bad person. even though i could easily bag them myself for free. am i looking at this the wrong way. i dontlike the idea. New to the comissary. thoughts, ideas?

    • Rebecca

I don’t love this aspect either. But you can bag them yourself, just tell them as soon as you get up there, before they have a chance. At mine they seem to get a bit snippy about it, but oh well. We already pay a surcharge, shouldn’t have to pay to bag our groceries too. I almost wouldn’t mind paying them a little something to bag it, just uncomfortable that they “have” to take it out for you.

    • Nicole

The way I see it, I save so much by shopping there and I take up their time with all the coupons that usually won’t scan, I have no problem leaving a good tip because I don’t want to give couponers a bad reputation.

  3. amy

I know what you mean. My husband told me they work off tips and I thought he was kidding. I don’t like it when I see a kid bagging I feel bad and feel that I need to give them money to bag or an elderly person. I never have them help me to the car though not because I don’t want to tip them but because I can do it myself.

    • Rebecca

At mine, if they bag it, they won’t let you take it out yourself. Which I hate, because I’m capable! I try to bag it myself.

      • amy

eww I don’t like that either. I don’t like someone coming to the car with me. I rather go myself and take my time. Not to mention first time I went to the commissary and they were bagging they didn’t put a bag in my cart. It had syrup in it and I was looking all over for it. Now I make sure I pay attention

  4. AnnaM. (Maryann)

Our Commissary has some self-checkout lanes with no baggers, so no tips. If you don’t have a lot of groceries you could probably request they just put the bags back into the cart for you to take to your own car. Then you don’t have to pay them.

But yes, usually the baggers work for tips only. Doesn’t bother me at all since my hubby took that job when we were struggling and it helped pay the bills like any other job. It’s just like tipping a waitress at a restaurant. And the Commissary baggers have no set hours. They show up when they want to work.

I’ve had baggers at my local Bakers ask for tips even though they get paid hourly.

  5. Alexi

Thanks for the Comm Match-Ups! Please PLEASE keep them up!

As for the baggers… I didn’t like the thought of feeling obligated to pay someone extra (we try/have to save as much as possible!) so I used to make sure to bag and carry my own stuff or use the self check-out when possible. BUT now that have a 1 and 3 year old, shopping is hard enough as it is and I am MORE than happy to pass along a tip to get my groceries bagged, walked to my vehicle and loaded.

And… for the most part, I save SOOOOO much with coupons that I feel I can spare a few bucks to someone who works MANY hours to make little money.

I save so much there a tip is a small price to pay. Especially since I stock up once every 2 weeks. Having a bagger while I am pregnant is awesome! Don’t forget about the px. I regularly get charmin 12 pack double rolls for $3 along with pantene for .69 cents after coupons. They let you use high value military coupons and manufact coupons on 1 purchase. Today pampers jumbo packs were 4.75 after both coupons.

  7. Chantel

The Tena mail coupon WILL NOT give you overage. I got this coupon and it says up to. That means at my commissary you can only get how much the product costs up to the stated amount. Still if you need them you can get them free or donate them. I was disappointed when I couldn’t get my overage.

  8. amy

Just got back from commissary and there are some very good deals on candy. Got a big bag of twizzlers for $1.15 and M&Ms for $1.20

  9. Kayla

    Thanks!

  10. Katy

does anyone know if you can use a military coupon and a manufacturer coupon? I looked at their policy and it appears that it’s not allowed, but I’m not sure. 🙂

    • Nicole

No, you can only use either a military coupon or a manufacturer coupon only. There is a long explanation of the rationale in the coupon policy but no stacking is allowed.

      • Katy

        thank you Nicole!

with all the money we save couponing, it makes me sad to see how stingy some people can be with tipping. baggers make exclusively tips, and if everyone assumes they dont really “deserve” a tip because “i can bag it myself” then it just makes it harder for them to make a living. Plus, with the economy and everyone trying to save a dollar, how many NONcouponers are skipping the tip too? if we couponers cant share our good fortune by giving the person who bagged our groceries 2 or 3 dollars, how selfish can we be? i used to work in a restaurant that was having a hard time staying afloat. it was so frustrating to work a 6 hour shift and go home with $16 in my pocket, because everyone assumes that someone else will tip better and it evens out at the end of the night. Times are hard and if we couponers can make someones day a little better, then why shouldnt we? To save $3?

    • J

I’m glad you posted this – I was thinking the same thing! Most of the baggers are so pleasant, and they work hard, and we can’t spare a few bucks to help them earn a living? Shame on us.

So, if you don’t already, make sure you check your store’s “discount” cart before you check out! These are usually things that get split apart from groups or crushed in shipping, which are often discounted 50% or more. Today I picked up a 20-ct box of Tampax Pearl for $1 ($2, less a $1 coupon), five single-serve boxes of Hershey’s milk for my daughter’s lunches for 25 cents each, and several other items that don’t immediately come to mind. The milk was just separated from its normal packaging (exp date 8/13, so not out of date – I have also gotten the mini V8 cans this way for 25 cents each). And honestly, who cares if the box for your tampons or cereal or fruit snacks is a little squashed? I have NEVER had a problem with the products inside! Hope this helps someone a little in finding those great deals at your commissary! 🙂

    • Heidi

Yep, just fyi! I went to the commissary and the Tena coupon won’t give overage. I talked with the store manager and she said because it says “up to 12” off they will only give the amount of product. I was disappointed; however, I was glad to have the coupon because my grandmother uses this product. 😀

  13. linda neil

I use to be a bagger. I would make between $30 and $50 an hour. Payday was much more. Was able to only work on saturdays to stay home with my son so thanks for the tips!
