I really wanted to get this set, but I am afraid that my 3 1/2 year old is too young for this – I wonder if I should get him Lego Duplo instead. Any suggestions?

You can always save it for half a year or so. 🙂 I have four kids: 6, 4-1/2, will be 3 in March, and 18 mos. My 6-year-old loves Legos. My 4-1/2 year old son would not have been interested at 3-1/2, but now he enjoys them, still not as much as the 6-year-old. And my almost-3-year-old daughter would not be ready at all. So it is funny how quickly they change!
The Duplos were (are) great for my kids at 3-1/2, but every child has unique interests so you may want to see if he/she enjoys playing with them at a friends house or something before buying.

My kids (8, 4, and one day my under 1 yo) are self proclaimed Lego experts. It is all they want for Christmas/Birthdays. They have a HUGE collection. My suggestion- skip the Duplo. If you don’t feel like your son is old enough for these hold off until you’re comfortable having them, but don’t bother with Duplo. They are really a waste of money, once your kiddo is ready for Legos the Duplos get tossed aside like a pile of garbage. They’re expensive and not worth the small window your kid will play with them for. He probably would enjoy Legos now, but momma knows best!

Becky is right though, every kid is different.

Thank you Becky and Em! I was thinking how quickly he lost interest with his mega blocks and how much he likes playing with a handful of legos that he has. So, I got the set wich should arrive on Thursday – his Valentine’s Day present (I’m bad with saving gifts for later dates :D)!

My daughter started using Legos instead of Duplos before she turned 3 — she was never one to put things in her mouth, so I wasn’t worried about that and she LOVES to build and liked having more of a challenge. We made be mistake of selling her Duplos, and then she played with some at a friend’s house and wished we still had those — she’s 4.5 now, and we got some Duplos again once we found out I was pregnant and realized we would want them again at some point anyway;). Now she uses both

Use with caution and lots of supervision. I wouldnt even blink… Kids put these in their nose, mouth, etc. Legos are my nemesis. Lol

I bought Legos for my five year old and Duplos for my two year old twins. They all play with both sets. Oh, and the sets do work together as well.

Thanks for posting this deal! I’ve missed it the last couple of times, but I got it this time. My son’s birthday is coming up, so it’s good timing.

we have both Duplo and Lego. my three children (boy-5, boy-3 and girl-1) will all play with the Duplo. the boys build very imaginative building with multiple functions with the Duplo – our 3yo just got past using them to only build REALLY BIG TOWERS. our 1yo likes to put them together and pull them apart and, lol, stick a single brick on her finger.
5yo started getting into mini-figures last year…as a result, 3yo also wants Lego like big brother, le sigh. 5yo is capable of building sets designed for 8-14yo. for us, having Duplo was worth it. we have a range of sets – animals, people, food items etc…

I got a few sets of Legos (including this one) for my twins’ 5th birthday. They both would rather go play with their duplos still. They ask their older brother (13) or mom or dad to build everything with the little legos, then are furious when it falls apart. However, they do take the minifigs to play with their legos!! I’ll just keep holding onto the little legos until they are older 🙂
