HOT! Getting Toasty! Lukewarm Starting To Melt Ice Ice Baby
0.0 / 0 ratings

My high for today would definitely have to be the laughs I shared with my oldest son in the waiting room of our dentist’s office. While we waited patiently, my son and I practiced the art of holding a pencil with our upper lips. My hubby acted like he didn’t know us which made my high for today even better! Gotta love occasionally embarrassing your significant other! πŸ˜‰

My low for today is the oh so annoying Elm Seed Bug. Yep, these teeny, tiny, super pesky critters invaded my home at the end of last summer. Once the cold weather hit, they finally disappeared BUT I am so sad to say that they seem to be back today. When I was outside sweeping my deck, I looked down and noticed a few of these bugs on the deck and siding of my home. And so the battle of Collin versus the Elm Seed Bugs begins – wish me luck!

[h2s_box]Every Monday-Thursday, I share my high(s) and low(s) for the day and I encourage you to do the same in the comment section below. My high(s) will simply be the best or most exciting thing that happened to me today and my low(s) will be something not so great that took place. [/h2s_box]

We call them box elder bugs and I’ve lived with them for many years, they are hard
    To get rid of

    • Pamela

Yes, we call them by the same name. (Michigan) They really like our south facing side of our house. Let me know if there is an easy “cure”.

      • Lorissa

Yup. Box elder bugs. If you are unable to cut the tree down then you can use a mixture of Dawn dish soap and warm water. Works wonders. I would have them all along the side of my house. It was a pain.

        • Betsy

We call them box elder bugs here in MN. They are around every year and are truly a pain. The good news is they don’t bite πŸ™‚

        • Erin

Gosh, we were infested the year before last. They were everywhere–even crushed in the door hinges! And they leave little red poop dots on our white trim and blinds–ugh! We were going to get an exterminator but they were all pretty much slash-and-burn–spray poison and kill everything. Instead my husband did research and found that they like leaf litter. We cleared out all the leaves from our stands of trees, and they really never came back.

        • Melissa

Just so you know you do not need to have a Box Elder Tree around to have Box Elder bugs!!

          • Lorissa

True. But by cutting my tree down (half fell during a storm), it eliminated 90% of them.

        • ian dye

thanks lorissa i sprayed the dawn on them and they seem to just freeze and dye 20 seconds after you spray them

    • Kate

They look like box elder bugs, but they are not the same. Read the article linked in Colin’s post (click on Elm Seed Bug). They are not native to the US and for some reason have been invading here the last few years. Luckily they are pretty harmless as they don’t destroy plants, but they sure take over the house when it gets hot. I hope the state does something to get rid of these pests.

  2. Michelle

Love that you make some fun wherever you go. You’re one in a million, Collin. Thanks for sharing!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Highs: Watching my little one move all around in my tummy. Its the best feeling in the world. Feeling him kick and move, only makes me more excited about his arrival come this July.

Lows: Finally eating a pregnancy craving and then throwing it back up. πŸ™ Guess my little guy didn’t want it after all.

    • sierra c

Congratulations! As I read your post, my son started kicking me too lol. He’s due at the end of June but I’ve been in labor twice already. My high is making it another day pregnant πŸ™‚ That’s 28 weeks and 5 days πŸ™‚ And my low is another day of bleeding and cramping. Again congratulations and good luck! I hope you have an easy delivery and a healthy son πŸ™‚

      • Emily

Oh goodness! Hang in there, my sil had the same problem at 27 weeks and she spent many nights resting in the hospital and many days resting at home (not easy with two other kids) and someone hit her car during all of this so she spent even more time in the hospital! She was fine but it was very stressful. It was all worth it in the end because they were able to give her enough meds to keep my nephew inside until they let him out at 39 weeks. Finally at 38 weeks her placenta moved and she could give birth naturally.

  4. jocelyn

omg i live in fl and i freak out when i see lizards running around the walls of my porch ill pass out if i ever seen one like this and to think that my husband and i where going to get station in boise ewww thank god now getting station in MI hopefully they dont have bugs!!!

    • Erin

They have the same bug read post 1.1 from Pamela..lol πŸ™‚

  5. laura t.

We hired an exterminator last spring. He spayed around our house and the box elders have not come back. It was worth the money!

  6. Cindy

    Hey Collin!
We have these horrible bugs in Michigan! They call them box elder bugs?? Well they love love the sunny parts of your home…ick just talking about them! My mailman πŸ™‚ told me to spray them with water and dish soap mix…..sure you have some dish soap πŸ™‚ ….my high is that the rain has stopped …my low….our entire basement flooded today!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Uggg… I am so sorry to hear about your basement! πŸ™

    • Pamela

OH Cindy! That is terrible that your basement flooded! I too live in MI. It has been a cold, windy cloudy few days. Warmer weather MUST be on the way.

      • Hilary

I too live in MI, the rain has started again πŸ™ Our basement floods as well, so everytime it rains I cringe!
We’ve had the box elder bugs under our siding, when it got warm they came out on the porch, I was SHOCKED at how many there were!!

    • Stacey

In Michigan also with a flooded basement…ugh!!! This rain is never ending. My yard is beginning to look like a lake with grass underneath it :-(. Luckily I was able to move everything out of the puddles before it got too wet…so I guess that’s my high for the day!

  7. Shanshan

HI Collin check out this site about the Box Elder bug. Very helpful!
    http://www.pestcontrolcanada.com/INSECTS/box_elder_bugs.htm

When they were congregating last fall outside of my house, I didn’t know what they were. I asked around and was told they were harmless. However I TOTALLY regret my instinct to kill them right on the spot, coz they did find their way into my house when it gets colder. Now it gets warmer so they start to show up again. I’m catching at least 10 a day, and we always have to look before we take a drink or eat something, in case there’s a dead bug in there. GROSS!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Thanks for the link!

    • shanshan

Oops I mean my instinct was to kill the bugs, but didn’t, coz I listened to others that “they’re fine” “they won’t bother you.” Yea.. RIGHT!

    • Liz

Michigan also Box Elder bugs by the hundreds at my house last summer — the dish soap/water mix in a bottle REALLY WORKS!! The bugs suffocate. I arm my 4 kids with spray bottles and let them have at it! =)

  8. Kim B.

It is the silliest thing, but ever since I moved into my house it is ladybugs that try to give me trouble. They are hard to get rid of because they are so darned cute!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

LOL! They are pretty cute! πŸ˜‰

  9. Amanda

I love that you aren’t ashamed to be goofy with your kids! I bet they love you more for it.

My High – I have been having terrible headaches the last few days and have hardly gotten any sleep so Hubby surprised me by coming home from work early with lunch in hand! He told me to go take a nap (this was around 3pm).

My Low – I just woke up from my “nap” about 40 minutes ago which means I slept for 4 hours. I did enjoy the nap but we ended up having to get McDonalds (unhealthy and a waste of money) because it was 7pm when I woke and hubby hadn’t fed the kids yet. Too late to make them wait while I cook dinner.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

What a sweet hubby! Also, I’m glad you were able to take a nice long nap – it sounds like you needed it.

  10. Lindsay

I hate those bugs! We have them here too!

  11. cherie

in NC we have “stink bugs” or “kudzu” bugs. They stink whether you crush them or not. They are around all year, but worse in warm weather.

    • amy

I live in MD and I guess stink bugs are the east coast version of elder bugs. Very annoying and wont go away.

    • Amy

I hate those darn stink bugs !! During the spring and summer they are at their worst at my house ! They are so bad in our house that my daughter can’t sleep in her room upstairs for those few months because they land on her all night and wake her up !! I have tried everything under the sun to get rid of them ! The only way I have found to kill them with no stink bug smell is to use an old glass jar with a lid and fill it with water and dawn dishsoap. It kills them in a matter of minutes because they cant breath.

  12. Anna

I know them as box elder bugs as well, but growing up we called them friendly bugs!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

LOL!! They sure are friendly… a little too friendly! πŸ˜‰

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Thanks… lots of helpful info!

  13. Lana

Low was feeling exhausted and awful after allergy testing today. High was sweet email from Hubby after and him picking up dinner on the way home.

  14. Pamela

My family had their first “High & Low” night at the dinner table. A new tradition….. thanks!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Awesome! πŸ™‚

  15. Carrie P

I’m allergic to them! If I pick one up and forget to wash my hands right away and then touch my face my eyes immediately swell shut. They are evil little creatures and they are everywhere!

  16. ME

Low: high medical bill is coming my way
High: thanks to your site and others, I have saved money and have a pretty good stock pile to support us.

  17. esther

I’ll trade you for all our spiders!

  18. Tomi

Here in PA, we.have stink bugs and I hate it!! They are gone during the cold weather but as it started to warm up, it is back again. They are hard to get raid of, too πŸ™

  19. Rena

we have lady bugs cute but way too many

  20. Mar

My low point; I didn’t get to organize my coupons like I thought I would then I’m trying juicing on my juicer and the vegetable juice I made per recipe and the boys and I drank it-was HORRIBLE I nearly wanted to puke! My high I cleaned house and helped out at my church! I made dinner and the boys loved it πŸ™‚

  21. C

my high…hubby and i decided to pack up the kiddos and go on a mini trip this weekend. πŸ™‚ its been so long since we’ve been anywhere. i’m so looking forward to it.
my low…having to send my 3 year old to the corner for acting out. she cried so much. i felt awful. after her time out was over she gave me a hug and said sorry mama.

    • audrea

good job letting her cry it out, ha! …brings tears to my eyes just reading what she said to you after, SO sweet!!!

      • C

she really is very sweet and loving . i love her more than anything so its hard for me to discipline her. i know its necessary but it just breaks my heart hearing her cry.

  22. LMarie

I’m here in KC,MO and last year was the first time i saw those exact bugs. i didnt know what they were or where they came from. And yes, they were on the south facing side of the house. Thanks for the info!

  23. Kristen

My high is we haven’t lost power with our ice storm. The low is we haven’t gone to school since Monday and tomorrow isn’t looking too good. Looks like we will be making up days at the end of the year.

  24. Angela

I live in the Kansas City area, too. We have been in the same house for over nine years and this past fall/winter is the first time I have seen these bugs, as well. I was told that hedge balls are a natural deterrent. If I’m still fighting the box elder bug later this year, I’m going to hunt me down some hedge balls and place them strategically around my house. It’s worth a try.

  25. Ashley

I killed 5 of those bugs in my house yesterday πŸ™

High today- I slept an entire full night last night. Like 8 hours of straight sleep. I haven’t had that in over 3 years!

Low- I woke up to snow. BOO.

  26. Alea

High: Finding the most awesome Amish made table on Craig’s List for pretty cheap and finding a single mom of two young kids starting over to gift our old table to on Freecycle

Low: The grey cloudy skies in Michigan

  27. Christy

We in NY are battling this bugs too…….ugh!!!!! On another note here goes my high and low of today…..
High of today was FINALLY getting my coupon box all organized and prepped for my big grocery shop trip on Saturday (high five me and pat on the back)……..BUT low of today was my one year old twins turning my coupons in to coupon confetti party after their father left the kitchen gate open………double ugh……..so guess what i’ll be the next few hours doing……….COUPONS!!!!! LOL!!!!!

    • Samantha Booker

My twin boys were 11 mths old yesterday. So far, the only damage is one slightly eaten Internet printable in the car. I know my day will come…..

  28. Alla

I have black ants and can’t get rid of them ugghhh… Some people told me they are wood eaters and some say they are a blessing. While I did not see any damages anywhere yet maybe they are doing it slowly and surely or what…. Blessings, yeah blessed enough with family and friends and thanks to Collin and few local bloggers we are saving more than we did before. I still don’t want the ants running through the house and my toddler chases them all day long. If anyone has any solution to how to get rid of them I will really appreciate it.
My high: ordered a computer desk with hutch and for a reasonable price to file my documents that are finally organized. Soooo excited πŸ™‚
My low: terrible lower abdominal cramps since morning πŸ™

    • Samantha Booker

I am dealing with ants, too. They are just around the window above my sink and the adjoining counters. It drives me crazy, though because I consider myself a clean person and to have ants crawling around my clean dishes (including my twins’ bottles!) and food prep area….BLUCK!

      • Alla

I agree Samantha. I don’t have them anywhere else in the house but just in the kitchen around my sink and the counters and I got the same counters as yours. I am a stay at home mom with a toddler and most of my day goes to cleaning the house. I got an ant killer spray and sprayed on a cotton ball and wiped down beneath the counter here and there and under the sink but it didnt help. Googled a lot but nothing good came up…

    • Emily

We got the little ant bait that raid makes. It looks like a little circus tent with holes around it… we put those on the floor and they all flock to it. The next day they are all over it and I resist killing them on the spot because then they won’t be able to take the stuff to their nest… within two weeks – they’re all gone. We keep the bait traps out for awhile and make sure they don’t come back. We get them about twice a year.

      • Alla

Thanks a lot Emily. Just googled it and found it at various stores around me. Will have to try this one and see what happens. Wish me luck.

  29. Jennifer

My high today was getting flowers for the wife of one of my hubby’s friends. She has all sorts of health issues and had yet another surgery yesterday. I thought she could use some cheering up πŸ™‚

My low was the dreary rain. Actually, that was a high too …. I love walking in the rain when it’s warm. I feel like a kid again! LOL! πŸ˜‰

  30. Brenda H.

My high was when my kindergarten age daughter came up with the 2 sentences, that used the word because, for her homework, all by herself. Low having to shell out $560 for two tires for my car

  31. Michelle

My pesky critters are squirrels, which I used to love watching them run across the yard and collect walnuts from our tree. Well this winter they dug under the house and took residence under there and today decided to venture under our back fence only to find my Jack Russel ready to pounce, yes he caught the squirrel and luckily I saw and told him to drop before the squirrel suffered any damage πŸ™‚ They are so cute but now I need to find out how to deter them from under the house or trap and relocate.

  32. Jake

My name is Jake and I am 8. My mom goes on this website.

My high for today is when I got the book Beezus and Ramona; my low for today is when I ate a grilled cheese that I did NOT like!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My parents and me play this every night now. Thanks Collin for the high/low idea!

    • Samantha Booker

Great job, Jake! I love that book! πŸ˜‰

    • sandra

Jake, if HIP2SAVE had a like button, I would super-LIKE your post!!! Thanks for the smile! πŸ™‚

  33. kellis

That’s funny about the bugs I love these little critters of course they are everywhere but few in the house, never had a problem with them. We would also get tons of Ladybug:) Maybe living in the country has driven me crazy!

  34. Erin

I grew up in the south so bugs were around all the time..stink bugs, horseflys, cicadas you name it. I was so glad to be rid of all the bugs when we moved to Colorado but for 6 weeks we are covered in Miller Moths and they are EVERYWHERE and so annoying especially with two cats in the house, they go nuts!! Trade ya! πŸ™‚

  35. Stephanie

This is sooo funny…we have always called them “sex bugs” cause they are always mating on the side of the house. Can’t stand these bugs!

  36. Terry

I thought they were called Box Elder Bugs. We have them here (Portland, OR) and they always hatch right after the first nice warm spring day. I found 2 today in the house….gross! I have never found anything that works to get rid of them. I can’t find for the life of me how they are getting in the house. Very annoying!

  37. J

Oh man, we have those bugs in PA, too and they love the white siding on my house. Nothing has worked so far for us. Don’t like to spray chemicals because we have rabbits who enjoy playing outside. (Not to mention kids, too!) A neighbor said he sucked them up with a ShopVac because if you squash them the scent only attracts more of them, but not sure if that’s true.

  38. ashley

my high today was finally finding some time today to put on some make-up. and my low today was definitely having to wash so many baby bottles all day for only my 4 month old daughter and still cant find one bottle. so not looking forward to the smell when i find it πŸ™

  39. dviale45

I can so relate. I live in PA and we have “stink bugs”. They never go away. You can’t smash them or they stink really bad so you have to flush them.

  40. Maria

Here in Wi, I have never had to deal with box elder bugsin the house until last fall, and now they seem to be crawling out of everywhere. We arent into chemical use here, so the soapy water and a vacuum cleaner helps alot!

Also have a few of the asian lady beetles.. wish they were true lady bugs… wouldnt be on my house or in it! Nothing kills those things, birds wont even eat them.

High: I got a good nap in while hubby watched our 3 yo… and the baby was kicking and moving alot!
Low: One of the pulsators stopped working in the barn, and the dairy supply guys didnt have the spare one rebuilt yet for us.. so, my poor hubby can only milk 4 goats at a time tonight. That’ll take him a few hours. πŸ™

  41. CJ

Yup box elder bugs — they used to cover the entire side of our house in WI when I was a kid, and we would spray them away with soapy water.

  42. tracy

do you know whats worse than those bugs…the scary centipede looking things. i think sometimes they are known as house centipedes. anyone else get those in their home.i included a link. tell me how scary they are!!

    • amber

OMG we have had those. They creep me out. I had one come out of my shoe right before I put it on a few years ago. I still check my shoes before I put them on!

    • Tilla Ham

never seen one of these in western wa, thank god

    • linda

OH.MY.CREEPINESS!!! We had these in the basement of our old house and I swear I once heard one make an electic noise. Those suckers are fast too! These are what my worst nightmares are made of.

    • jamie

yes they do make noise. when you see one i try to find something nearby to kill it and then when i turn back its gone, and thats the worst part you have no idea where it went so its still in your home!!!

  43. llc

I can relate the the bug issue. Not the same bug though. I have those large black brown tree cockroaches. They love pine and my house is full of it. They live under my house (my house is over a 100 years old and on blocks) and sneak through the cracks. Then the cats kill them. Sooooo Gross. I cant stand them. They FLY!!!!

    • Emily

You need to invest in terminex! I rented an old house like that and we had a type of roach… they came and did their thing and we signed up for the subscription service where they’d come back every few months. Best money that we ever spent!! We’d see one and like magic the notice would come that tells me what day they’ll be spraying. My parents use Erlich and they too love the service. If you do see a bug between the sprays they will come out for free and spray again.

  44. Laura

High- dinner date with my hubby! Low- nothing!

  45. Lisa

Ah so that’s what those bugs are!!! My house has been infested with them the past few weeks too and my 2 year old daughter is absolutely terrified of them. Last week she was walking towards me and all of a sudden screamed and almost fell backwards. I thought she got hurt or something terrible. It was one of those bugs on the floor in front of her. I end of smashing about 5-10 a day INSIDE our house.

  46. sandra

My low: going for a routine eye exam and expecting to leave with a reading glass prescription, but instead finding out I had an ocular emergency requiring immediate surgery (yes, I had eye surgery today, and will have eye surgery tomorrow), all with my husband out of town. My high: being reminded of how loved I am, and how many totally awesome family members and friends I have in my life as so many people offered to drop everything and help with anything they could after learning of my situation. πŸ™‚

    • Joy

Glad they caught your eye emergency in time.

  47. Barb

high- waking up to another day of life. low- everything else. had a really bad day today but a few days ago all i had was a high so i figured i would get the low back double fold and i did. oh and i have another high – the day is almost over and tomorrow will hopefully bring a better day.

  48. rebecca S.

    Cute picture of your son.

My low is my car decided to break today and losing $10 somewhere.

My high is my car broke down after I made an unplanned stop at my inlaws so I didnt get stranded in the middle of nowhere.

  49. Laura

Low- we are under a tornado watch and I really would just like to go to bed.
High- Sold another item on ebay… keep em coming.
